Done my upgrade yesterday and forgot what a total pain in the ass it is lol

went from a 3rd Gen i5, 16GB DDR3 1600MHz to a skylake i7 and 16GB DDR4 3000Mhz and an MSI Motherboard. using the same GPU a 980.

Don't see much difference in general use in fact I think it's a little slower (dunno why might just be me) only game I tried was DS3 and getting a solid 60FPS in Max settings but I never tried it on my old build as I bought it yesterday.

Shit, shit shit, shit. Fucking shit.
Last time I try OCing my cpu.

Right now, it doesn't boot half of the time.
Any ideas why? I've already cleared the cmos.
The video works on both MB and dedicated card.
I've reseated the ram.

I have a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H and a 4670K.

Doesn't post. The screen will show nothing and there's also no power to the USB mouse or ps2 keyboard.
Also, fans will spin up.

Edit: I took out one of the ram sticks, and now works wtf

Edit again: I can only boot is there has been a change in the ram configuration. Taking one out, adding another one or change their place.

Hey Gaf, I am planning to buy a large (~ 27") 1440K display. I checked the cheap korean monitors thread but most of the links they provide are from ebay. I want to buy one from a place with a sensible return policy (amazon etc.) and I am willing to pay a little bit more. I am using an nvidia 970 and willing to reduce the settings to hit 60 fps or just upscale from 1080p. I want the 1440p because I use my desktop for programming as well and got spoiled by the 1440 apple monitor at work. I don't want to bother with overclocking the monitor and would appreciate a model that is easy to calibrate.

I really appreciated the detailed responses about silent parts from the last time. I hope you can help me with this as well.

I think I saw some on newegg. They're still sold by pretty much the same people you find on ebay, though.

So far I've dealt with 2 sellers on ebay and it has been an ok experience. You're pretty much playing the lottery with those monitors and there's no way around that as far as I know. You can have a perfectly good monitor and then an issue may or may not pop up a few months down the line.

There was a Dell 27" 1440p 144hz with gsync on sale earlier today from best buy for $450. If 144hz and gsync/freesync aren't big features for you I'm sure any of the big name (LG hp asus) 1440p monitors would be just fine.

I have a 980ti and i5 4690k.

I already have 16gb DDR4 3200 ram ready (my current PC is DDR3) and i already have a 500gb SSD and 2TB HDD. I have windows 10 but i am told i will have problems since i upgraded from 8.1?

So i came up with this now

I just wonder if that cooler will be enough? Seems like a lot of people who are buying the i7 6700k are using that .

Windows will be fine, just install Windows 10 and use your 8.1 Key to activate it. If you want Water try the NZXT X41, great cooler. If you want a cheaper motherboard try the Asrock Z170 Pro4, Asrock Extreme3 or the Gigabyte GA-Z170-D3H. As for a cases look at Phanteks or NZXT. The Corsair one is good too if that is what you want.

Yeah I saw the same stuff but I am not interested in those really. I would rather buy something from bestbuy (AOC seems fine) and not worry about returns.

I would rather avoid putting that kind of money for now. How useful is gsync if I can barely hit 60 fps?

Thanks a lot guys.

I'd still buy a 144hz monitor, it makes just about everything look way better. It's the biggest upgrade you will ever see. You can still run it at a lower rate for games even if it doesn't support gsync/freesync and still benefit from the smooth sharp image for general use, for online gaming it's huge too, just drop everything to lowest and you can hit 144 for sure and it would look and feel great.

...That's pretty much exactly what gsync is for. Also with a 970, I'm sure you shouldn't have much trouble maintaining a steady 60 in most games if you dial down the eye candy a bit. But again, if gsync comes into play then it doesn't really matter.

I'm looking at some 1440p monitors to go with my 1070. Currently using a 1080p 60hz. I know the 1070 is a good card for 1440p 60hz but I'm worried going forward it will struggle so might want to go back to 1080p. How does 1080p look a 1440p monitor? Will it look bad? I might just keep my current monitor as a second display and switch between them as needed.

It'll be worse than 720 on a 1440p screen. 1440/720 is 2, but 1440/1080 is 4/3, so it'll be blurry. I also have the same questions, with a 1070 coming and only a 1080p 60 Hz monitor.

Looking for a pc build which is console size like. Cooler master elite 130, raven z0x series and fractial design node 202 come to mind. Does someone has some suggestions in combination with a 1070/1080? All the people I asked to make a build are pure pc gamers and dont understand why I dont want a huge case but want a console like pc next to my ps4 and xbox one :(
No one? :(

Hey, so I built my first computer recently. It's working fine, but I did start noticing some kind of noise emitting from my Corsair CX650M 650W PSU, a kind of a fluttering sound. I put a microphone against it and it sounds like this.

It's not super noticeable (this microphone is positioned pretty closely and at the source of the noise, so it's kind of amplified), and it doesn't immediately jump out to me as "this is wrong", but it's there and I don't know what to make of it. Is such noise completely normal? It's not really that annoying, but if it's a sign of something faulty I don't like it.

I can't hear anything unusual. Maybe I'm missing something. Those PSU's I think have some problems from what I've read but it looks like this is a newer release so who knows if they've improved the quality.

This might not be fully up to date but as you can see the Corsair CXM psu's are tier 4:

Hmm, yeah, perhaps I'm just being perfectionist (also a bit of a newbie in terms of PC building). The rest of the computer is fairly quiet (I'm still waiting on my GTX 1060, so no GPU fan producing noise yet) so maybe that's why I picked up on that small thing. As long as there's nothing inherently wrong it's fine.

Thanks! :)

Oh, shit. The Hybid is at 480.

Are we likely to see 4k monitors over 60hz anytime soon?. Guess it will be a couple of years after they appear before they reach even slightly reasonable prices

PSU is the one most likely to have problems if you go for super cheap. The video card is where you'll see the most benefit as you spend more

Completed my upgrade that started from CPU (FX-6350 to core i5 6500) with a new GPU. Got the GTX 1060 (MSI Gaming X) to replace a R9 270x (2gb). The new setup is so much quieter than before and probably is way less power hungry.

One question about overclocking the GPU though. In reviews people talk about 2000+ clock speeds for the GTX 1060 but that is the boost clock right? Does raising the clock speed in afterburner raise both the boost and base clock speed? Thanks in advance.

Yep, definitely don't cheap out on the psu. It's not that you're saving that much anyway buying a cheaper one. Plus, it's one of the most future-proof part you can buy.

That was my original plan but it says discontinued on one site and seems to be out of stock or insanely over priced (80-100) everywhere else.

Edit: would I be better off using an Ethernet power line adapter?

I don't know how well those work...

HERE is one at office depot for $40 lol.

What's the most important component of a PC that you should spend the most on and not settle with the cheapest?

like already been said PSU. my current PC cost £1270 and there is no way i'd trust a <£50 PSU to power it. I've seen some people using a £15 PSU to power their £300+ system. Don't cheap out on your PSU. Not only can it destroy your system but it could possibly start a fire in your home. When I built my PC I went with the EVGA Supernova 750W G2 model which cost £105 and meant that I had to hold off buying an SSD/Monitor for a while but it's totally worth it.

Consider yourself lucky. In my case the MB was permanently damaged after I OC it some years ago. Tried messing with Vcore and it would not boot at all

Yes. Increasing by X adds to the base and boost speeds. And, don't try what speeds people say right away. Add small increments at a time and run some test, like 3Dmark. Also, don't enable start with Windows until you find your stable OC speeds. Otherwise, if the settings causes crashing, you PC will crash on next boot up.

What's the concensus on the Corsair h55? Worth buying if I'm still on a stock cooler and want less noise?

if you want less noise it's a pretty good solution (although consider that you will still need a fan for the rad. Might want to look into Noctua's air coolers as well (they're pretty quiet).

The Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI is one of Newegg Canada's shell shockers today ($149.99 CAD, or $129.99 after rebate), so I ordered one to go with my i7 6700k purchase. Curious what kind of overclock I can expect on the 6700k? Here's what I will end up with:

CPU: i7 6700k with Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo and Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120mm fan
Motherboard: GA-Z170XP-SLI
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000
Case: NZXT S340 with 2x Noctua NF-P12-1300 120mm fans

I don't want to push the 6700k to the limit, but I would like to get a decent overclock. I am currently on an i5 2500k, and I've got it at a stable 4.5 GHz.

bit of a random question, when I install my new GTX 1070 I want to completely reformat my HDD and reinstall a fresh install of Windows 10 (I have the education version but certain windows store apps (Quantum Break, Forza Apex and Gears of War UE) tell me to update to the latest version of Win 10,

Now I have a legit ISO of windows 10 pro from university and my Win 8.1 Licence Key still, the problem I have is I only have a 2009 Macbook Pro running Yosemite and boot camp assistant only lets me create a boot USB for windows 7.

How do I do this?

I got the H75, and i think you should go with that instead. best of both world. medium sized radiator, and comes with 2 fans. I only use 1 though for less noise.

Got a problem. I've got a Define R5 case in white, the entire thing is painted. Where the hell do I clip my antistatic wrist strap?

Screw a standoff into where a screw for the PSU plate or side of the case goes and clip to that. I did that with my S340 but have no experience with your case.

Edit- meant PSU not motherboard

I'm not even kidding, all the screws are painted too.

I'm just gonna clip to the HDD tray which is the least painted and pray.

Edit: Dug old screws from my last case out and screwed it in where the case panels screws in.

you really don't need to use an antistatic wrist strap. well yeah if you want to be very safe but personally i've never bothered with it. if there are no parts on your case to touch then there must be something else nearby you can touch. i sometimes touch the pipes on my wall radiator.

Another case to look at would be the Fractal Design Node 304. I was thinking of doing the same thing.

You most probably need the Gigabyte GTX 1070 itx mini.

I plan on upgrading to Windows 10 from 7. Am I reading it right that you no longer need to first upgrade from within Windows 7 but can do fresh install with the Windows 7 key?

I ask because I'm going from X99 to Skylake which is a hassle to install Windows 7. If I can circumvent that and just install Windows 10 with my 7 key it would be great.
