Turbo boost isn't the same as overclocking, normally only one or two of the cores will reach that boost clock under heavy load, while overclocking will bring all cores to the target clock, netting you bigger and more consistent performance gains.

Turbo boost suffices for some cpu heavy emulators in my case. For the rest I use a gtx 1080 at 1080 res, which makes cpu overclocking redundant at this point. Had a bad experience with overclocking that damaged the motherboard. Chipset support had dropped at this point and I had to be content with an inferior mb for years, till the next major upgrade

Hey Gaf, i need some help and hopefully this is the best place to ask.

I am trying to use my new 4k tv with my pc. When i try to change my resoluition to 4k the screen zooms in and also puts a pink overlay on top of the screen. Looks like this, but for some reason the pink isnt shown on my screenshot.

Any help?

If an RX 480 is the same price as an R9 390X, which would be the better buy, do you think?

I think a 390X still outpaces the 480 by a little bit, right? Of course, the power draw would be way higher on the 390X.

The 480 is a new architecture that will receive several generations of driver benefits; in a couple of years it will likely outpace the 390X in all DX12 games. It also consumes about half the power and has twice the VRAM. The choice is a no brainer, the RX 480.

I need some help from people smarter then me on BSOD stuff.

I've been getting a bunch of BSOD screens lately while playing Mirrors Edge: Catalyst.

Everything from "Memory_Management" to "Critical_Structure_Corruption" and some BSOD screens that flash quickly before the machine just reboots. The game will also randomly crash to the desktop.

Is there some software or something that can look through the PC and spot whatever is ruining it?

Specs:

i5 @3.3Ghz - 2500k (not overclocked)
OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w
Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P
16gb ram
GTX 1070

Would mixing static pressure and normal case fans in a Push-Pull config be OK?

I have just built my first PC and now want to stick more fans in my PC.

I have a Corsair Hydro Series H100i V2 240mm AIO cooler with the 2 supplied 120mm fans pushing air from the case through the radiator and out the top.

My case (Fractal Design Define R5) mainly has fans that are black with white blades showing and I'd like to stick to that colour scheme.

But if I am to stick to that I would need to use the Fractal Design Dynamic GP-12 fans which are standard case fans. Would putting them on top pulling air out of the case and leaving the Corsair fans that came with the AIO at the bottom be OK?

Also if I do add the fans should I add them in to the CPU_OPT fan socket (with a 3 pin splitter) or add them to one of the case fan connections?

Current specs:

CPU: i5 2500k (oc'd to 4.5 GHz) with Hyper 212 EVO and Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120mm Case Fan
RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 2X8GB DDR3-1866
Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V PRO
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1070 Windforce
PSU: 750w Corsair modular (not sure of the model)
Case: Antec 900 (with 3x Noctua NF-P12-1300 120mm case fans)

I purchased an i7 6700k this morning off Newegg Canada's ebay page (409.99 CAD, normally $459.99). I game on my system but I also plan on doing a lot of video editing in the future, which is why I went with the i7 over the i5 this time.

Mainly looking for advice on MOBO and RAM. I will be recycling my GPU (obviously!), PSU, hard drives, cpu cooler with fan, and my case fans (if it makes sense to). Mobo needs decent overclock ability and USB3 (and maaaaybe 3.1), but not much else. I don't need wifi, or good audio (I have a usb dac/amp), or a ton of sata ports (3 at most), or hdmi. Basically, I spent a lot on my 1070 and 6700k, and I don't want to spend too much on everything else!

I'm debating on getting a new case, too. My current one only has USB2 and Firewire 400 of all things at the front, and I would at least like to have 2 front USB3s. I'd prefer a white case this time as well. Something simple and sleek. I opt for good airflow over keeping the system quiet. I'd want something with a filter so I can keep it relatively dust-free.

Thanks for any recommendations!

According to PCPartPicker its 159mm in height. Edit: yes i think it will. Not 100 percent sure, it will be very tight, i think that 165mm measurement is measuring from the motherboard tray.

Yes that card can support DVI monitors with a 1 adapter.

Thanks. I read last night that the motherboard I choose has the ram really close to the CPU and if you use the cooler I've chosen that it blocks one of the Ram banks depending on how much of a heatsink your Ram has. However Pcparticker didn't give me any compatibility issues. But has anyone heard about that mobo and cooler not being a good match?

These three will do you well. Same mobo I have with Thunderbolt 3, case has everything you need and it's got great airflow, 16gb DDR4 at 3000mhz is more than fast enough for you.

Can anyone give me a ballpark guesstimate in what I could sell the following for?

I5 2500k
Z68xp-ud3
8gb ddr3
Hyper 212 evo
1tb I'd
256gb samsung 840
Bluray read/write drive
750w xfx psu
Gtx970 G1

So, I am replacing my GTX 670 with 1070 per everybody's suggestions.

Is there anything I should look for in the case? The case I have is full size, so space shouldn't be an issue.

Great list! Thanks for looking into this! I will be keeping an eye on prices for all three in the coming month or so. That mobo was $224 in May, so I'd like to see it come down a bit more before I pull the trigger. Can you tell me what the difference would be between the one you selected and something like this? http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128840&cm_re=GA-Z170X-_-13-128-840-_-Product (This one has a Thunderbolt connector included - would it be slower?) Also, if I were to not need a mobo with Thunderbolt, would this be a decent pick? http://www.ncix.com/detail/asrock-z170a-x1-3-1-intel-skylake-1151-84-122225.htm The more I think about it, the more I don't really think I'd need Thunderbolt. I've updated my original post.

And the case looks fantastic! Exactly what I want. Think I should stick with the stock fans, or install my Noctuas?

Anyone have any good advice for the most barebones laptop that isn't a POS with Windows 10 (just speed wise)? Looking to get my mom a laptop, all she does with it will be: web games, e-mail and some other web stuff.

I picked the white s340 for my wife's current build and holy fuck this is a nice case

I kinda want to get one myself

The razer version looks like the same shit as the black one but with the logo and green under glow? That's it?

Might grab the black one.

The novelty of the thermaltake core p cases is intriguing but seems ultimately stupid.

A Chromebook may be the answer

Looking for a pc build which is console size like. Cooler master elite 130, raven z0x series and fractial design node 202 come to mind. Does someone has some suggestions in combination with a 1070/1080? All the people I asked to make a build are pure pc gamers and dont understand why I dont want a huge case but want a console like pc next to my ps4 and xbox one :(

I was pretty set on my 6700k but I am wondering is it good for video edition and 3D animation? Mind you I don't do either thing hard core, they are just hobbies. Home movies and such.

So I started taking a look at the 5820k with its 6 cores. But if got it I would also need to choose a new motherboard and possibly Ram.

How is my chosen 6700k for the tasks I listed?

If it's anything like the last i7 (the 4790k), it'll do great with stuff like that. I've done a good bit of video editing with that processor and had no issues.

So the 6 cores vs 4 is not something I need to worry about? When I saw that the 5820k had 6 cores that's what got me thinking I should look at it over the 6700k.

One other question. How does a NVIDIA Branded card for the GTX 1070 compare to an EVGA like the one in my picker list? I can't get either for the same price. (I'm getting the card at Best Buy where they sell NVIDIA Branded cards.)

Are all of the HDMI inputs on your TV 4k capable? Maybe you have it plugged into an HDMI port which does not support 4k

The asrock boards aren't as good as ASUS or Gigabyte I have heard. I have the Z170-UD5 TH and it's great. The one you picked from newegg is fine though. I would install your Noctuas in the front of the S340 pulling air in if they're 120 or 140mm and leave in the two stock fans back and top blowing out. That case has a filter on the front to capture dust.

I'm actually just leaning towards the mobo listed in Haz's build sheet for "great value": GIGABYTE GA-Z170XP-SLI Seems like it would fit my needs fine. The other one I linked to has optical-out which I don't need.

My current Noctua front intake fans are 120mm. Would I see any benefit to getting 140mm fans, assuming I keep the stock 120mm exhaust fans? I'll also be using a 120mm fan on the CPU radiator.

That's a great mobo, so go for that!

Yeah those will work fine, mine are 120mm also. No sense spending money on fans you don't need.

Asking this once more since I would like some feedback but didn't get any on the last page:
I'm considering building a new PC if it turns out my motherboard is damaged and it's not just my GPU, here's what I came up with.

Is there anything I should be considering instead (I will be configuring the 3 hard drives for RAID 5, they'll be used mainly for video storage since I tend to capture a lot of it and, of course, video games)? I went for a $1,000 budget PC last time (AMD CPU, lower end DDR3 memory) and don't want to make that mistake again since I plan on using this for the next few years and plan on using it for playing 1080/4K gaming, recording audio and editing 1080p video.

You can save some money and drop the 6700k in favor of a 6600k, you won't notice any difference in gaming. And I doubt the gains in editing will be noticeable.

Could also get a cheaper copy of windows from reddit.

Three possible benefits:

1. At a given speed, the 140's will move more air and thus cool better than the 120's.
2. At a given rate of air flow, the 140's will be quieter because they will be turning slower.
3. Increasing net pressure inside the case by adding more filtered air intake will keep the case cleaner, by disallowing dust from entering from unfiltered points of entry.

I know amd fixed the power problem with a driver update but too be safe , do the 3rd party 480's with 8 pin power pins, they shouldnt have the problem regardless should they?

Anyone have a good recommendation for a wifi/Bluetooth card? I assume the usb ones aren't ideal but I'm not looking to spend a ton of money either.

I was looking into motherboards more today and it kind of bothers me that the motherboard I have chosen is considered entry level. I feel like I would like to go a step or two above that if it would make a difference and the one I found is a gigabyte MA-Z170X-UD5.

What are your thoughts on that one vs the one in my part picker?

Overall I am looking for stability and longevity.

I have a GTX 770 Gigabyte Windforce 4GB model for sale. I just got a 1070 Strix to replace it. It works great. If it weren't for my Vive, I'd keep the 770. $125 shipped. GPU only.

CUzu2PZl.jpg

I also upgraded my RAM. So I have Ballistix Sport 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3-1600 Very Low Profile RAM for sale. $40 shipped. It's super low profile, which is why I bought it and upgraded to the same kind, only 16GB.

Seriously, since I game on 1080P on a couch, I wouldn't have upgraded my 770. But the Vive forced me to. Kind of annoyed. The 4GB VRAM was a good decision. I'm surprised the Strix fit in my Fractal Node 304. I have the Evo 212 cooler in there. It barely fit.

Most sources i've read suggest that the gain in video editing going from i5 to i7 is substantial enough to justify the minor increase in cost. That said, if I went with the 6600k, where would it be best to put that $100 towards, if any component? Also, I don't go anywhere near Reddit.

So GAF, I'm torn between getting a GTX 1060 and a 1070 to go with a new 144hz monitor.

My major issue is obviously budget. 1440p is still too expensive for my price range atm so I'll probably get a 1080p monitor like the BenQ XL2411Z or the Asus VG248QE.

Given that HBM2 cards will come out late in 2017 or early 2018, I'm thinking I may be better served cheaping out this year and getting a GTX 1060 instead. If I'm going to have to sell the card second hand anyway, there doesn't seem much point in spending the extra money on a GTX 1070.

I'm currently playing Rocket League, Overwatch and Dark Souls 3. Aside from the odd open world game, most of my games aren't overly demanding.

I would go for this. Faster RAM, better and faster M.2 SSD for big video file transfers, and you don't need a big liquid cooler either, plus this cooler comes with paste preinstalled. I would suggest going with 7200rpm WD HDDs if you can swing the cost. You'll still be much happier going this route.

I've searched the internet but to no avail, so I'll turn to this thread: there's a small rattle coming from my computer case that sounds like a fan with a loose bearing. After process of elimination -- ie. stopping each fan -- I determined it to be the PSU fan.

Is it prudent that I replace the PSU or should I just leave it?

I could use some help you guys, I was recently just gaming and I wanted to check my GPU temps, but HWMoniter and MSI Afterburner are not detecting my card, on device manager I'm able to see my card is visible but on these apps and Geoforce Experience, it won't detect it, it will detect the driver i have installed though, which is 365.19.

My rig is

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6600K CPU @ 3.50GHz

Video Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970

RAM 16 GB

Operating System Microsoft Windows 8.1 (build 9600), 64-bit

I just built this computer last month, and I cleaned it the beginning of this month as well.

Any help would be great!

MY MX518 mouse broke and they no longer make them or the G400s. Does anyone have a G402 mouse? I might get that but it's a different design so I dunno if I'll like it or not.

So my i5 has been starting to bottle neck me so i decided it's time to upgrade and since i plan on upgrade my CPU/MB and i figured i would get a new case and PSU while i was at it.

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($344.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($129.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($145.00 @ NCIX US)
Case: Corsair 450D ATX Mid Tower Case ($129.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($95.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $845.85

I wanted to keep it under $800, ideally $700-750 but this is the best i could come up with i am sure i could get a different cpu cooler and power supply and shave off some bucks but i figured i would let some people who know more than me help me out on this. Also, some of this stuff is actually cheaper on Amazon i don't know if they count shipping as a total price or not but that cooler is like $20 less, PSU is $5 less etc.

What's your current system? GPU/CPU?

I would definitely go with a cheaper cooler (maybe check out the cryorig h5, IIRC) and a cheaper case.

What do you want in a system? What will you be reusing? How much RAM, what kind of storage do you want, do you need windows?

I have a 980ti and i5 4690k.

I already have 16gb DDR4 3200 ram ready (my current PC is DDR3) and i already have a 500gb SSD and 2TB HDD. I have windows 10 but i am told i will have problems since i upgraded from 8.1?

So i came up with this now
PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/wpsr7h
Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/wpsr7h/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($344.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($24.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($145.00 @ NCIX US)
Case: Corsair 500R Black ATX Mid Tower Case ($104.91 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($95.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $715.77

I just wonder if that cooler will be enough? Seems like a lot of people who are buying the i7 6700k are using that .
