I understand that Kaby Lake will launch before too much longer?

Should I get a Z170 or just wait a little bit for Kaby Lake to launch?

I can't even find much intel (pun intended) on how Kaby Lake will be different than Z170.

I plan to build my system using the Corsair Bulldog and hook it up to my TV.

I'm waiting for Kaby since I'm interested in the additional HEVC decoding functions of the integrated GPU, i.e. HEVC 10 bit. I'm using my computer as HTPC/Kodi, so that could come in handy...

Ugh, my EVGA GTX 1070 SC fans are making a weird clicking noise when they are at top speed. Probably need to RMA for that right?

Only at 100% fan speed? I don't think I've even had my fans that high. If you never get them that high under normal operation, maybe it doesn't matter.

But yeah, probably RMA.

Not top speed, whatever the fan speed is when it hits 70C. It's probably like 65%ish?

I bought through amazon so I think I can just process a replacement.

For RAM, try VCCSA and VCCIO before resulting to increasing VDIMM or VCORE.
VCCSA and VCCIO start point would be 1.1-1.15v.

If temps are good I would get the rig prime95 stable. Just select blend as the torture test then click custom. Enter a good chunk of ram and change the minimum fft size to 128k.

So did a bit more tweaking, SA and IO both to 1.100v which let me bring my DRAM voltage down from 1.370v to 1.360v (1.350v still wouldn't post) and I've got my cpu voltage down from 1.360v to 1.340v and all seems stable at 4.6Ghz / 3000MHz RAM. Cheers.

Hopefully someone can help with this -- Is this a good buy for $579? What it'd be used for is some gaming (mostly emulators like Dolphin) and video editing.

Processor: 6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-6700 Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.00 GHz)
Memory: 16GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (8GBx2)

Shows $949 for me, but I put together a rough list on pcpartpicker and am already hitting ~600.

Cpu, mobo, ram, and gpu is already hitting $588.

If it truly is $579 it'd be hard to build cheaper.

With a cheaper mobo and case I managed to get it down to $580. HDD brings it up another $60.

Yeah there's a deal going on with some promo code. So it's a solid build then for that price? He plans on streaming/recording too.

HELP PLEASE

So I'm setting up my OS on my brand new PC, but it's not working. I have an MSI Z97 Motherboard. I have 3 Drives: Drive 0, Drive 1, Drive 2.

I went to install the OS on Drive 0, and it seemingly worked but it wouldn't boot up through Windows. By the way, I downloaded the Windows 10 ISO on a USB flashdrive, and that's how I'm installing the OS. It keeps saying that Windows can't create a partition, or "Windows can't be installed on drive 2 partition 1". Another thing it's been doing on Drive 0 (the Drive I've been trying to set it up too) is saying that it has an "mbr partition table" but Windows needs a GBT. I converted my driver into an MBR but that's when it started saying it couldn't create a partition.

Now I'm staring at a screen saying:

- Drive 0 Unallocated Space
- Drive 1 Partition 1: New Volume
- Drive 2 Partition 1: New Volume

Frustrating as hell...

So what stress test system/length are you guys doing these days?
I currently do Intel Burn Test for 30 mins + Furmark (CPU and GPU stress) for an hour.

Used to do Prime95 runs for a few hours but IBT kinda switched me over since it creates a crapton of heat and has found errors in 15 minutes where Prime did not in 8 hours.

As someone with 8 Drives, I always make sure to connect only the drives that I'll be using for the install. Do the install. Then connect the other drives. So I'd disconnect the extra two unless you're doing some sort of weird multi-boot, multi-drive configuration. It basically streamlines the process a tiny bit for you and the OS. Another thing, windows can't create partitions on unallocated space. You need to format it first then partition it (just use default windows settings).

Hey guys, quick easy question. For Adobe Premiere, am I better off with the 6800k over the 6700k because of more cores? I know the 6700k outperforms the 6800k in regular single core stuff, but would the extra cores help for Premiere?

I do a lot of 4K editing and I'm sick of waiting on my computer.

What drives are new/blank and which ones have stuff you want to save on it?

Assuming you have a single new drive that you wanna install the OS on, just unplug the other drives so there is no confusion. And then wipe the new drive (may have to either "delete" or "format", I forget what it shows in the install screen) and install to it.

I believe that the USB is what's confusing the computer, and not the other Drivers, but I could try, and unplug the other drivers.

They're all new, and they're all blank.

Formatted all the drives so that they say Drive # Unallocated Space and changed them to GPT.

If your drive has a GPT partition scheme, make sure Windows is being installed as that as well. Not sure about the Microsoft Windows Media Creation Tool (might default to MBR), but I use Rufus to make the USB boot drive with the Windows iso on it. Set partition scheme to GPT and go.

Make sure your BIOS for your hard drives isn't set to legacy support or Windows will format and install using MBR.

Might be an odd question but been wondering something. When I was building my part list I ended up getting a sound blaster zx card. I originally had no plans to buy a sound card as I figured my current (but ooold) card would work fine. But my main reason for getting the ZX was due to it being very on sale at $65 so I bit.

Going to be building my Pc this weekend and wondering if I should bother with the ZX. Or keep my current card, which is a X-Fi Fata1ity with the front bay.

How does the ZX compare to the X-Fi?

Well I plan to be upgrading my mobo/CPU in a few months to at least a Z170 along with either an i5 or an i7, but if Kaby Lake is right around the corner it makes sense to wait a little bit longer

I am always drawn to an i7, despite no games really reaping the benefits of it.

Does SLI ever equate to double performance in gaming? In simple terms... Scenario: My FPS in ultra settings with a 1070 was 65, in SLI it's 130. Does this ever happen?

I don't run an SLI setup but from what I understand, that sort of scaling is pretty rare.

i was looking at getting a 1440p monitor since upgrading my PC to an i7-6700K/GTX 1070. i know this card can do 1440p 60fps but i'd still like the option to play at 1080p 60fps but i don't want to drop £300 on a new monitor if playing at 1080p is going to look terrible. 720p on my 1080p is horrible. will it be the same situation on a 1440p monitor? the monitor i was looking at is the dell u2515h which seems to be very popular and high quality.

because you're stretching an image to fit the screen? loss of detail and quality. i just want to know how bad it is. playing at 720p on a 1080p screen is really bad.

Iam in the exact same boat as you are. Was considering to buy a 1440p gsync screen as 1080p gsync feels like a waste of money at this point, but I would like to keep the option to play 1080p on demanding titles.
Then again I guess its hard to go back from a higher resolution and you will most likely just scale down settings to hit the 60

Clueless question about Windows licenses- I upgraded to Win10 from my retail Win8 disc. If I sell my old PC with Windows 8 freshly installed on it, will it in any way interfere with my license to use Windows 10 on my new machine? And will the buyer have a full freedom to use Win8/8.1 without limitations? I'd like to sell my old PC with an OS if I could, but not if it will be problematic in any way.

My old PC will be sold with a new hard drive, so I'd be doing a new Win8 install on it. I know MS allows simultaneous installs on multiple machines, but I don't know if that still applies to two different OS licenses (8 and 10) at once.

EDIT: Tried it. Windows 8 won't activate anymore; it claims that it's only an "upgrade" license, not a "clean install" license.

Hey that's my monitor, it's pretty good indeed, affordable and is great quality. :)
I guess if you can spend, it's probably better to get 120hz, gsync or freesync one right now right? it's out of price for me :(

Anyway, I never really drop down to 1080p in my games though (I have 980ti) so I don't know if it butchers the quality or not. Usually I use windowed mode if I play in 1080p.
But I'll take a look and see if it's noticeably worse.

^^ I don't know what it is, but I want to do that in my system, but that water setup scares me

I was unsure about water at first. Now I will never build a computer without a custom loop. As long as the fittings are tight enough you have nothing to worry about.

Pretty sure the gpus do high quality scaling. Also according to tftcentral the 1440p monitor scales fine on its own. Given 4k displays and mixed content good scaling is cheap and plentiful. I should be able to report back in a day or two. It won't look like 1440p but should look really close to 1080p at same size.

Would this be a decent build?

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/qfkvnn

I've tried watching videos on building PCs, but all the numbers and stuff next to the parts are still gibberish to me. I just used choosemypc.net to build me one.

Here's what I want out of a PC:

- I'd like to be able to reasonably play most games for the next 5-ish years.

- I don't care about 4k. 1080p is fine.

- I don't plan on doing any VR gaming.

- I'd like the possibility of upgrading to a better graphics card at some point if I choose to do so.

- I want Nvidia so I can use the streaming stuff.

Read the OP. The "Great" $865 build would be a good choice.

How is that a bad rap, the person even gave you a link and a suggestion.

People already gave suggestions for parts, it is in the OP. Notice there are 2 or 3 options for everything with how much more they cost.

Again, I looked at the OP. I can afford more than the "Good" build, but the "Great" build is too expensive for me. Also, I want Nvidia so I can use the streaming stuff, and the cheapest Nvidia in the OP is way out of my price range.

And that link only confuses me further. I found the links to the benchmarks, but I don't understand what any of the numbers mean, plus the CPU I'm interested in isn't on the list.

Why is it so horrible that I'm asking for help in a thread called "I need a new PC!"? What the hell else is this thread for?

Not reusing any parts. This is the first PC I've ever built. Hence why I'm so utterly clueless and seeking help, which is apparently a crime in this thread.

Budget is $800 max, including the monitor.

The guy replied with basically, "Shut up and read the OP, and figure things out for yourself with this unhelpful link."

Whatever. Fuck it. Fuck this thread. I'll just throw together that build and hope it isn't garbage.

I got you a better processor (though it's still pretty low-end. better than ps4/xb1 though), RAM, and a decent Nvidia GPU. $10 cheaper monitor from Amazon (shows up as $99 with Prime for me). Slightly more powerful power supply for future upgrades. If you're comfortable with it, grab a windows 10 key from those reseller subreddits. They're legit keys and a good $40-50 cheaper than retail - I've bought a couple from there before with no issues at all.

It's worth noting that I have no idea how long this thing will actually last for you, haha - it's really hard to predict what will and won't be viable for 5+ years. Even high-end stuff doesn't stay that way for long. Though that depends on what you're playing.

You are limiting yourself too much with that processor, you'll want something Quad core and newer if you want the build to last 5ish years. The power supply is also a bit lower wattage than you'd want if you plan on upgrading the graphics card down the road, I'd go with a 600+watt if you can. Since your budget includes a copy of Windows and a monitor you are pretty limited and have to make a cut somewhere. Maybe try to find a used graphics card and put that extra money into a better CPU and PSU. The poster above me has a better build for you, good starting point.
