The 1060 is in a different class, it performs like a 980. It has more memory too, which will allow you enable higher resolution textures in games without a performance hit.

How about the 3 gb version? If 1080p is my intended resolution. Would a 970 or 1060 3gb be better?

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
Thanks for the info, it's like 65 more for the 1060 6 gig so I guess I'll go with that.

Any 480 is honestly overpriced, especially compared to a 470. 40%+ higher price for ~5% more performance? I definitely regret going with a 480, and I'm hoping drivers or something will make up the difference eventually.

But as far as 480s go the Devil is probably the most well rounded card at factory settings, though it requires a bios update. With tweaks, you can't go wrong with any of the cards, aside from maybe the Nitro+ which may have a sliiightly worse/noisier cooler than the others.

In terms of support, I've never had to use any of them, I've just heard XFX's is pretty good and Asus is apparently not so good.

(Worth noting, I do have a Devil 480. Bias? Maybe a little, but I'd still say MSI's card is probably the all-around best by a slight margin and was the one I'd have preferred, but this was my second choice and was available.)

Best deal for real: https://jet.com/product/MSI-Video-C...n-Frozr-VI-O/e63f1e7cb1b645c6ad7b36c9dba862e2

$175 470 with the triple15 code if you are new to Jet.

Thanks for all the info :)

But the card you linked is $265.92

What's holding me back about the 470 is that in all the benchmarks, it seems a little bit below 60 fps at max settings on the newest games, the rx 480 seems to have a lot more more futureproof potential, specially the 8 GB model

I could be mistaken though

I completely forgot to order Windows. I need it on USB since I don't have a cd drive. What do I need? 64bit Home or Pro? Does it make a difference?

I started getting memory crashes with The Division, and that was alleviated by turning down a lot of settings, but then the same memory crashes appeared in Doom to a point where I couldn't/didn't want to play at the level necessary to run smoothly, and now Deus Ex is killing my system with the same memory crashes too. For reference, I'm currently running:
- i5 3570K
- 8 GB RAM
- GTX 670

So it's a VRAM/RAM problem, but I wanted to upgrade this year anyway, so I guess it's just a sign to do it now rather than wait. It looks like supplies for Nvidia GPUs have sorted out now that the FE are over with, so I guess it's time to build a new PC over Labor Day weekend.

Is there a wireless card that people strongly recommend?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019JH89YI/?tag=neogaf0e-20

This one is great. It gets recommended here a lot.

I use it myself.

What do you guys think should be the placement of the 2 additional case fans I picked up with the above build? 2 intake in front 1 exhaust in rear? Iirc the r5 comes with 2 included so I'll have an extra one. Not sure if 4 fans will be overkill....what do you think?

Three intake, one exhaust. Run the intakes a little slower and quieter.

Should be fine. I had two cards stacked like that with no issues in mATX.
Thanks for that. Still seems a little tight but hopefully I can get it to work. Kind of excited for 4k. Wasn't planning on it but I just had to order a PG279Q because apparently Fry's only had last year's 1440p model with TFT. Which I will be returning...

I wasn't sure if the button on the monitor would actually override the Nvidia control settings, so I went there and changed it to 60hz and 144hz but I still don't see a difference.
Double-check that both the Nvidia control panel and monitor both say 144hz. We had issues getting anything above 60FPS in Rust and it was because the refresh rate was set to 60hz.

Bought myself a Corsair Hydro H60 (the newer revision with the SP120L fan) yesterday and it's now keeping my CPU at a nice, cool temperature, enabling even almost room temperature idling, and generally lower CPU temperatures than the previous CPU cooler I was using (not a stock cooler, but rather a TX3) (Didn't get a tower air cooler as my case's pretty tight as is)

I'm very happy with its performance, but one thing I've noticed is that the manual specifies that I should mount the fan + radiator as a push-intake fan in the "rear exhaust" position, and I've followed it to the letter.

Any special things I need to take care of when the rear exhaust has its direction reversed?

Home is fine for just gaming but if you are using it for work maybe better with Pro? I don't know...you will need to look at the differences and see if there is anything that you need. Remote desktop, virtualization, bitlocker, group policy management, assigned access, trust boot, windows store/update for business.

What about the MSI Xpower Titanium ? Unless price is an issue, as it is more money, the Xpower is pretty much all white, well Silver / White and has the reinforced PCI-e slots still, if you really want them.

Looks great, especially in a white case.

That looks great and fits super well with a white case.

Strix'es are IN... a very tight squeeze too. Might have to advance my plans to get a bigger case

anyone know why when I'll open a game sometimes, and my gpu will just not run at the maximum fps? I'll alt tab it or alt tab and open up afterburner and alt tab back in and its fixed.

Looking for advice on audio crackling. Occasionally, when I start my PC, the sound it totally broken sounding. Whenver video is being played, there will be an awful crackle, and often his will also be associated with really bad performance like a stutter video or low frame rate. (This can happen in a game, or it can happen just watching a video on Chrome.) If I plug in headphones, the audio crackle totally disappears.

Restarting the computer often fixes it, but sometimes it take multiple restarts. Also, it probably only happens every 5th or 6th time I turn the computer on.

I'm on Windows 10 and just using whatever the standard sound drivers would be.

I know it isn't the TV as I've had it happen on multiple TVs, the HDMI cord as I've had it happen with multiple HDMI cords, nor the GPU as I've now had it happen with two different GPUs.

Any ideas for what to do would be greatly appreciated.

May I ask what model mobo do you have?

I have everything more or less specced out now, only RAM remaining.

I was originally concerned when looking up 1151 motherboards because there seemed to be widespread complaints about POST errors and issues, but it seems like the real culprit is RAM. DDR4 is specced at 2133, but there are actually more OCed 3000 and 3200 variants available than the base 2133, yet almost all of the issues with POST seem to be RAM related.

Is it really just luck of the draw, or is it better just to stick with 2133? How significant are the potential gains from 3000 or 3200?

So been playing Deus Ex MD on a 770gtx, benchmark maintains 30fps average, low being 29, and that's on high. I'm good to hold off upgrading till Volta now, phew!

Seriously the game plays fine and have made it 1/2 through the campaign without any hitching issues :).

So my harddrive apparently went berserk I happily logged onto GAF earlier and then my whole PC just freezes up. I go K and restart. At first it wouldn't even boot. Comp couldn't see it. Insert Boot Device again and again until I finally forced the USB (with the Windows install) in the comp and that managed to get it to "see" it. Repaired the windows install (since I was pretty much forced too) and the HD is a Seagate Barracuda in my defense it was about 4 years ago I got this. Windows 10 is acting so baffling. It half works. Like I can log in. And I can play any game I want. But trying to use the start menu? Nope. Try to use the internet? Nope. Not registered or something explorer exe won't work. I used my old windows 7 PC to check what was going on with my harddrive using HDD guardian and it is saying there's unrecoverable sectors. Which yay. Ran CHKDSK didn't help.

I tried to repair windows and lol not a chance. I'm guessing the whole windows install is corrupt which is fantastic.

For the moment I bought some cheapo replacement off Ebay so I can at least reinstall windows 10. Oddly all my files seem fine. I'll just install the OS on the replacement and keep the rest of my files separate. Anyone have recommendations for a replacement harddrive (that has least 1tb of space considering all the files I'm gonna have to move onto it)?

I don't even like using my windows 7 install because for some reason the cpu clock speed runs at max all the time (unless I put it on power saver (Balanced still maxes) which knocks some sense into it) which makes everything turn into a furnace. (Which is why I even upgraded to windows 10 on the backup anyway. It was nice to have low temps. Alas sweet prince)

Anyone know why bluetooth isn't showing up in my new build on Windows 10? I'm using an Asus Z170-A and the BT settings seem to have vanished.

It goes to about $205 if you are logged in. Then 15% off that makes it $175.

So I think I fucked up. I bought this thinking it was the Samsung 850 Evo 250 Gb SSD recommended in the build in the OT. But it seems it is a 'v-nand' SSD that is like a stick of RAM or a card or something.

I am currently in the process of building the PC right now but realised I don't know how to install this. I have a NZXT 340 case and a Asus Z170-A motherboard. Will I need to buy some kind of adapter to use it?

That's an m.2 ssd. The connector is in the lower right corner of your board.

Having an issue with my PC again. My mouse get's unresponsive for seconds at a time or disconnects(makes the disconnect sound) then reconnects. It started on an older mouse which I thought was the problem. The new one just started doing it. This was about a month after putting a new power source and reformatting my PC. It happens so often FPS games are becoming unplayable. I've moved it around all the usb ports . The front ports tend to behave better but it still happens. What could the issue be?

Is it the mouse or does it have to do with CPU/GPU/RAM overload? Have you checked the usage statistics?

And for the record, I went from averaging 75 degrees celsius to 20ish degrees celsius. Feels good man, but I wish I had a modular PSU to get rid of those unwanted cables at the front :/

For adding two 120mm fans to the front of the NZXT s340 case, which directions should the arrows on the side be facing in for good airflow? The case instructions aren't very helpful. Thanks very much in advance, getting there. Every part I am bricking myself hoping I don't mess it up.

Arrows indicate direction of air flow. Front fans should be intakes, so arrows pointing in.

Aye, my point of confusion is there are two direction arrows, one point into the case and the other pointing at 90 degrees. Like so:

<=
.....||
.....|/

So other than the X axis pointing into the case, is the y axis relevant? Should both fans be the same? At the moment I have both fans with the arrows visible on the side facing me as I look into the case, As above.

Another thing - stupidly I did not realise this case does not have space for DVD drive. This is a new build, and I have a Windows 10 Oem disk to boot from - if I pick up a USB DVD drive and plug that in on first boot up with the windows cd in, will that work? Or do they need driver installs themselves to even work?

I'm sure its been asked before but I'm going to be building a new PC soon.

I'm getting stuck on the GPU.
-RX480 (then getting another down the line)
-GTX 1070
-GTX 1060 (then getting another down the line)

I'll be ordering a 21:9 1080p monitor, but me and my roommate just got a 4K tv, so it would be nice to throw it over on that on occasion.

My recommendation would be just to go for the GTX 1070, multi-GPU setups can have their own problems and I don't think GTX 1060 even officially supports SLI.
Also two of RX480 doesn't seem to be too much better than single GTX 1070, check the benchmarks https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/RX_480_CrossFire/ Would probably even argue it's lot worse.

1070. Easy.

I just ordered the parts minus the gpu. I was thinking of getting a 1070 or 1080 I can't decide. Which non founder edition would be best?

Anyone recommend somewhere to get win 10 on the cheap? Is it that sub Reddit that sells ms software?

I don't know if its allowed to post the link here. But I got Windows 10 Home from one of the mods of that subreddit. Cost me $35 and haven't encountered any problems so far.

i got my key from Reddit (won't link the sub just incase) and has been working fine for the last 2 months. Although there are some reports that after something like 4-6 months the key will stop working. I guess I'll wait and see. I paid £25 for mine so even if I were to buy another 2 keys I still wouldn't have paid more than what Microsoft(£100)/Amazon (£84) are asking.

if you do decide to get one i'd recommend not getting the N version even though it's cheaper. it says the only difference is that it doesn't include windows media player and other media files which is true and you can install the missing stuff from microsoft but it's just a bit of a hassle. i don't use WMP but instead use VLC but the important thing is that there are other media files missing which prevented me running GTA V on Steam or installing the Sony PC Remote Play for PS4.

you don't need to reinstall your OS if you're changing RAM. just switch them around. you might need to enable XMP in the BIOS for speeds beyond 2400.

Yo GAF, I just decided to join PC club (again). I got sucked back into WoW earlier this month (after not playing it in years) and my 2003 iMac handles it on low-medium settings (at 60fps though) but it's not cutting it for me at all. I want to be ready for when the new expansion drops at the end of the month, but what really pushed me to build another PC after swearing off PC gaming, was ironically enough, Xbox Play Anywhere initiative.

So I decided to build a small form factor PC, that will not take up much room on my desk and look nice. All about compact, sexy, efficient machines. Based my build around the Silverstone SG13 chassis (only 11.5 liters capacity, heck yes).

Case: Silverstone SG13 White (Mini ITX size)
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB (Mini ITX size)
MoBo: Gigabyte H170N Wifi+Bluetooth (Mini ITX size)
CPU: Intel i5 6500 3.2GHz Quad Core Skylake [Edit: Upgraded to the 6600 for $17 cheaper than the 6500 (newegg) thanks to Jet.com 15% off promo plus no tax]
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB
RAM: Corsair 16 GB (2x8) LPX DDR4 2400 CAS14 (Low Profile)
PSU: Corsair SF450 Gold-Rated Modular (SFX form factor)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF140 140mm Quiet Edition (for front intake)
Other: Silverstone ATX to SFX PSU bracket

Total: $889 [edit: $872] (including tax)

I was pretty excited I was able to stay under my $900 grand total budget, I had to settle on 2 things to stay under...
1: For the time being I will have to stick with the intel heatsink, which I'm not worried about for temps I think it will be fine since I'm not OC'ing hence the non K model CPU. But I'm hoping it's not so loud that it's like a jet engine.
2: A 250GB SSD for now, until I save up for another larger SSD to add shortly down the line.

Anywho, I was pumped about being able to pick a good set of SFF parts that should work great together in that tiny case all for under $890....but then I forgot to factor in Windows 10...ugh. Which retails for like $100.

But if I'm reading those quotes right, you guys had success with the reddit software forum with those Win 10 keys? Can you download Windows 10 from Microsoft's site onto a USB (I won't have a CD drive) to install on a fresh build and then just use the key you bought from reddit? Do I need a Windows PC in order to format/download that Windows 10 USB install? Cause I only have Macs right now so I'd have to borrow something, if you guys have any tips I would really appreciate it. Want to have everything ready for when the parts arrive.

What resolution/refresh rate? The 1070 is better value, but if you are playing at (e.g.) 4k you need everything you can get. In terms of models, there are probably lots of good ones. I'm partial to the MSI Gaming X myself. Also look at the Asus Strix, Gigabyte G1. Even the Palit is supposed to be quite good. Techpowerup probably has a good set of reviews.
