Quick question: I nabbed a brand new Zotac 980ti AMP! omega edition for 430$. Is that a good buy?

For reference: here in Sweden the Zotac 1070 AMP! (normal edition) is 515$ and the AMP! Extreme 650$. The cheapest 980Ti "normally" is about 500$.

The other card I was looking at was a 480 Strix, which goes for about 360$ but should perform much worse than the 980ti, right?

Concidering these pricepoints, did I do a good thing by getting the 980ti? I'm worried about legacy and if I'm screwing up my clocking chances by getting the AMP! omega and not the AMP! extreme.

From what I've gathered, the 980ti and 1070 are about neck and neck when it comes to performance but the 980ti can edge it out if you manage to get a good clocker.

If you get a good draw from the die lottery a 980 Ti can overclock insanely high--and a 980 Ti is leaps and bounds ahead of any RX 480. Sounds like you got a good deal.

Yes, and I connected an HDD with the same cables and worked just fine. It seems that there is a setting someplace that prevents SSDs from being detected?

same brand, same batch, are they new? perhaps they are faulty.

it seems like it should work if the HDD works.

do you have another computer to try the SSDs in?

Phew, alright.. Thanks man. Beeing looking for the right time and deal to upgrade from my 680 for a few months now. Stressing out a little bit!

Stupid question on my behalf....however I must ask it none the less.

Can I replace my current 16GB(4x4) corsair DDR4 memory which is the generic green at 2133MHZ on the X99 Deluxe motherboard with the 32GB (4x8)Corsair Led 3000MHZ DDR4 memory without reinstalling my OS?

Thanks.

Anyone recommend somewhere to get win 10 on the cheap? Is it that sub Reddit that sells ms software?

i got my key from Reddit (won't link the sub just incase) and has been working fine for the last 2 months. Although there are some reports that after something like 4-6 months the key will stop working. I guess I'll wait and see. I paid £25 for mine so even if I were to buy another 2 keys I still wouldn't have paid more than what Microsoft(£100)/Amazon (£84) are asking.

if you do decide to get one i'd recommend not getting the N version even though it's cheaper. it says the only difference is that it doesn't include windows media player and other media files which is true and you can install the missing stuff from microsoft but it's just a bit of a hassle. i don't use WMP but instead use VLC but the important thing is that there are other media files missing which prevented me running GTA V on Steam or installing the Sony PC Remote Play for PS4.

you don't need to reinstall your OS if you're changing RAM. just switch them around. you might need to enable XMP in the BIOS for speeds beyond 2400.

They are not new. I stripped them from my old PC. They were working just fine there. And being all three of them that are not recognized really makes me suspect a BIOS setting someplace...

My 5th SLi cards (prev 6600GT, 8800GT, GTX295s, GTX680 4Gb)

You do know none of the Windows 10/Xbox games have supported SLI so far.

Instead of ahci try the other connection just to see if it works? I honestly have no idea at this point. Perhaps reformat on your old PC then throw it back into the new PC

Thank you for the extremely quick reply, I just ordered the memory and will look into enabling XMP when I get the package delivered.

I've changed memory before and never needed to format.

Cool that is a sigh of relief, I could not be arsed to reformat my PC and re-install all the software again, especially because my PC is kept in a clean state.

The other connection is RAID...

The problem is that I wan to use that SSD for the OS and is the SSD that has the OS of the previous PC. So formatting it there is kind of a problem...

Thanks anyway for the help!

Have you tried different SATA slots and/or cables? Other then disabling the SATA slot, I don't know of any other bios settings that would make it so the SSD can't be seen there. What brand and model are your SSDs?

All three are Crucial. One is MX200 the others I don't remember and I am currently at work.

I have seen that there are some "legacy" mode settings for SATA devices in the BIOS (if I understood correctly) and I want to play a bit with them when I get home to see if they help.

I want to try the specific SATA port though cause according to the manual it is where the OS disc should go (SATA_3).

Well, no more GAF until I manage to upgrade the PC. It is going to be fun! See you in, oh, I dunno, 4 days? I'm that bad at building PCs.

Friends are coming to give me an hand, so it should be done today.
Inb4 I discover that I miss something important, that my PSU isn't up to the task, or that I break something by accident.

Is there a consensus for 1060 vs RX480 for 1080p/60fps? Both are the same price in my country (~300 euros...), and 1070 is much more expensive. From my understanding, 1060 is better for current games, but 480 may be better down the line. Is there any truth in this?

So, with an £800 budget, I finally got the bits to upgrade my dad's PC:

CMASTER HYPER 212 EVO Cooler £29.99
250GB 850 EVO MZ-75E250BW/EU £83.99
Intel Core i5 6500 s1151 3.2GH £182.48
2x4GB Cors VENG LPX DDR4-2133 £41.48
24 ACER G246HL V/D/H 1MS MONIT £101.48
ASRock H170A-X1 Motherboard £73.99
6G GByte GTX1060 G1 GAMING £269.99
NLRB-304LOCK 45CM Cable £1.97 (just in case)
Akasa 1.5g AK455 Thermal Paste £2.48 (just in case)

Fingers crossed my flying visit to Norfolk proves to be trouble free in building!

It's all theoretical. The 480 *might* be better on some titles down the line but we don't know until that point arrives.

Right now, the 1060 I got was around the same price as the currently out of stock 480's I've seen. With performance being higher currently, I went for the 1060.

So what's the best, cheapest M2 drive I can use with an Asus Z170I Pro - is my board even NVMe as I can't seem to confirm.

Based in the UK FWIW.

There is no reason why the OS drive has to only use SATA_3 port. If you are also using a M.2 SSD which shared bandwidth with SATA_1-2 ports, you can use the SATA_3-6 ports for the OS drive. If not, you can use any port.

My first build took me 4 hours in an ITX case. Good luck, it'll be pretty satisfying once you finish. If you have a tablet or phone lying around, it'd be better to have something to look at for reference while building.

Well, I have this case:

I should have plenty of room, and my friend is an expert in building PCs, so it should be fine... I hope. I discovered that my OS box and key vanished. Not really happy about that.

No, I am not using an M.2 drive. In any case, I will play around with cables and positions once at home and if nothing works I will hit up Asus chat support.

Welp. If you still have it installed on the HDD, you might want to recover the key first before re-building the pc.

Well, I managed to recover the key, and my friend is bringing the OS on his USB key, so it should be fine :) But yeah, I was kinda worried for a minute.

How far off are we from 4k 144hz monitors? I want to upgrade to a 4k monitor but if higher refresh rate monitors are in the near future then I can wait.

Im waiting for these too and like someone already said Asus have shown their monitor already so we might not need to wait very long.

Should I get more RAM?

I recently upgraded to a 1070, and the guy at Frys said more RAM wasn't necessary. I haven't had any issues, but I'm feeling a little inadequate at 8GB.

Considering this GTX1070 (http://www.mindfactory.de/product_i...0-EX-Aktiv-PCIe-3-0-x16--Retail-_1117354.html) for 399€ but i have limited experience with KFA2. Anyone can shed some light on it?

I never heard of KFA2 before o.o But that 1070 looks very similar to my Palit DUAL and the Gainward model so it should be fine for that price. Just don't expect a 100% silent model and tons of OC headroom.

I'd say you're fine for gaming. Get another 8GB when you feel the squeeze. I doubt you will anytime soon. Gamestar.de found no performance difference between 8GB and 16GB in Deus Ex: Mankind Devided.

If you constantly have a browser running and tab out to it, then it would be worth it.

So, I'm just about done building my first gaming pc! Just taking a little breather now. Took me a little over two days which is a bit longer than I expected, but I guess I'm just not very good at these things. It hasn't been too bad though.

I did run into some trouble with the 212 evo cooler, it's a tough one. I think I didn't install it correctly and it got loose halfway through so I had to redo it. :/

Reapplied everything but I'm a bit worried I screwed up the thermal paste. I tried to clean it up and reapplied some but it still looked sort of gross so I guess I didn't do a great job, hope I didn't trap in anything bad. And I might have put in a little too much paste. I tried to keep it a small dot but second time around a bit more came out than I would've liked, it was pretty runny. I noticed the heatsink is able to move around a while afterwards so I hope that doesn't mean I screwed up there. Might be normal, I dunno.

Still right now everything's put together and I'm thinking I'm good?

Also, weather pretty hot right now here, 30-ish celcius outside if the internet's to be believed. Don't know how room temps are though, don't have a thermometer on me. Probably a bit lower but it feels hot. I'm sweating like crazy.

So, mobo bios showed mobo temp at 30 c and the other one, cpu I think?, at 33 c. I think that's all good? If anything that seemed a little low to me considering how hot the room feels? So I hope everything's showing up correctly. I'm just gonna proceed in a minute but I'll check back here in a while so someone let me know if it wasn't.

I checked the mobo bios and it's on the latest version. I'm gonna have to configure it still and then install windows but I think my parts are showing up correctly. RAM isn't clocked at 3000, I think I gotta configure that in the bios first? Video card isn't showing up in the mobo bios specs but I think that's normal and it just isn't supposed to do that? It's running and hdmi's hooked up through it and that's working.. And my disc drive didn't show up either but I think it doesn't do that until I enter some media, yeah? Not seeing anything else that could be questionable.

Oh yeah, I'm using a fractal design define r5 and I did hook up my case fans to the case's fan controller instead of to the mobo. Not sure about that one. Gives me manual control through a switch on the front of the case. Is that good or would I be better off hooking them up to the mobo and let software control them? I'm a bit worried I'll have a worse time now that it won't be automated. It's just 3 settings I believe, it's at the middle one right now.

So yeah, I hope everything's fine. I think it is so I'm gonna proceed with the software stuff but please let me know if something seemed off here. I don't want to fry anything.

Any good place I could find a RX480 8GB or Nvidia 1060 6GB from a good manufacturer at a good price? Everything I find is out of stock or overpriced

This seems like a bit of a long shot, but does anyone here have any experience with KVMs? I have 2 servers now and I want to manage them with just 1 keyboard, mouse, and monitor combo. Most of the time I just remote into them, but there are times when they have an error and I need to access them directly.

I need a new mouse. My G400s's wheel has broken - I can't scroll the wheel one 'tick' at a time now (it just scrolls smoothly) and it doesn't respond very well.

As soon as I saw that I need a mouse, I went to order a Razer Deathadder, but I checked this thread first and it's no longer mentioned in the performance mice section. Is there something wrong with it? I'd rather not get another G400s, I didn't like its wheel even when it was working.

I feel like my computer's finally at the point where I can't play new games at the level I'd like... mainly due to poor/non-existent SLI scaling. I'm on the fence about building a new PC now centered around the Pascal Titan vs waiting for a potential 1080Ti. Whatever I do I want to go with a single card only... for now. My question is... is the Titan going to be around for a while, or is there a finite quantity? For some reason I thought I remember reading that they were going to be limited but now I can't find anything saying that. Also, I know it's just speculation, but what do you guys think the actual price and performance of a theoretical 1080Ti would be relative to the Titan? In the past I know the Ti versions of cards come very close to the Titan performance-wise, but at a fraction of the cost... do you think that trend will continue?

Definitely going nvidia, can also ditch the wifi card. I think I want to go with a better CPU cooler. Will this one work?

Also think I may want to go with a fractal r5 case again.

Can you recommend some good case fans for the r5 that are on newegg or are the included ones enough?
EDIT: I'm assuming these would work fine:

Hyper 212 its normal to slide even when fully clamped.

Temps seem fine. Try a game and use something like HWMonitor to record the temps.

RAM - Need to enable XMP in the overclocking section in the BIOS fpr it to run at 3000Mhz.

Video card should show up in Device Manager. And GPU drivers will complain if there is no GPU connected.

Optical drive should show in My Computer at all times - Check the connections SATA to the Motherboard and a SATA Power to the PSU.

Better to hook up as many fans to the Motherboard and let it auto control - or set your own fan profiles with the mobo software. Unless you are ok leaving the fans at a constant speed - which is also a method some people use for extra silence, but can do a similar sort of thing with mobo software.

Thanks for the answer! Apparently it was a part of Galax (the european part of galax). Still undecided on the gtx1070 though since i am in Portugal and i would have to order it from Germany. Would end up costing 425€+-. Wondering if i risk it or if i buy a Msi gtx1070 gaming for 499€...

Do you really need something better than a 1080 right now? Titans have never been good purchases in the past and it's a super enthusiast thing now too. If something does not run well on a 1080 today you can consider it a badly made game/port that everyone else is also having trouble with.

Remember that there will always be something better coming out next year. Stalling upgrades because better cards are coming later will just make you never upgrade.
