Finally finished. Yes I have her on the floor for right now. We are waiting for the upstairs flooring to be finished before I move it to my office.

Ran Doom at 1440p @ 144fps and the CPU and GPU stayed at 30C. I'm going g to try some over clocking today.

That's so sexy.
*jealous*

Yep, you're right. I haven't been keeping up on the new CPUs since Haswell, but I checked some benchmarks and yeah, the improvement is barely noticeable in most (if not all) cases.

But I'm very curious of what's causing all the stuttering, 4 minutes long loading times and bad performance. It could be a bad port, but some people seem to have decent experiences, so I'm not so sure yet.

Could it be the RAM? I currently have 16GB DDR3 1600Mhz. Maybe an upgrade to faster 32GB would be beneficial in this case.

You could try to buy a used 2400 MHz kit. A lot of people are upgrading to skylake, and selling off their old stuff. I was able to get a 16 gb kit of corsair dominator 2400 ddr3 ram for 50 bucks off craigslist. So be on the lookout. But you should go into that knowing that you will not be able to use that ram in your next build. And while faster ram can help in some games and benches, there's no guarantee that it will fix or even help Deus Ex's performance.

Is that a Lian Li PC-05S case?

Yeah, that's what I was planning to do; sell my old stuff and get Skylake, but I figured it wasn't worth the effort.

For sure, I don't expect DDR3 to work with Skylake or Kaby Lake.

I don't expect much, but I'll keep an eye out for some 2400Mhz's.

Thanks.

Saphire RX 480 NItro+ for 310 eur or ASUS Strix GTX 1060 for 325 eur?

It's for 1080p (maybe light 1440p) relatively silent build.

So a buddy of mine wants to get into PC gaming. He thinks I know a thing or two because y'all helped me build a monster PC last spring( shout out to RGM79). He already has a GeForce GTX 970 and a 1TB hard drive. He got lucky and got it for free from another friend. the challenge is to get the remainder of the parts on a restricted budget. Honestly I'm not sure if its possible. Any help would be appreciated.

Your Current Specs: None
Budget: $400
Main Use: Gaming 5.
Monitor Resolution: 1080p 60

Hoping for a decent gaming experience, nothing spectacular. He mostly wants to play Dark Souls 3 and Overwatch

Does he mind buying used?

Not particularly but he would prefer new parts. Used might be the way to go because of his budget though.

Well, when I said buying used, it means cpu/mb. The monitor and the case, i.e, the parts that he will be seeing/feeling, usually are new. For $400, I think you're looking at ~100 for the monitor, ~200 for the cpu/mb/mem, ~100 for the case and kb/mouse. If you squeeze a little bit, there can be a budget for an SSD, which speeds up the overall experience quite a bit and I think will be worth it. Of course, there is still a Windows 10 license.

No way is that going to fly for $400. Forget the SSD too. That's dreaming.

Edit: I take it back. Sans SSD, it's at least possible.

Does he have a Monitor already? If yes:

Micro ATX is probably the way to go. Those MBs are cheaper.
From my head (I just compiled two machines for friends) and only in Euro prices.
MB: 60€ (some Asrock)
CPU: i3 6100 or an AMD one for around 110€
RAM: depending on the MB DDR3 or DDR4, 16GB for 65€
Chassis: Something that you think looks good for 60€
PSU: 500W with cable management for 60€
SSD: some cheaper 120GB for the OS and main programs for 40€

Would be 385€

If he doesn't have a monitor, well... No SSD, PSU without cable management, 8GB of RAM and probably going the AMD route. It's a pretty tight budged.

That's actually a good plan but I think the SSD will have to wait.

Is there any specific parts you recommend? Also is there a good marketplace online for used PC parts? Thanks for the help.

Well, $30 for the case, $25 for p/s, $100 for 1080p monitor, These are the deals on newegg right now. ~100 for 2500k, 50 for a m/b, 50 for 8G mem. Add $20 for kb/m, $25 for windows 10 on reddit. If he has kb/m and a windows 10 already, that can almost get him an SSD.

I can't say much about the quality, but these are decent brands. Also, you need a cpu fan.

Yes, its very tight. Honestly it might be best if he waits a while and saves up. Thanks for the help tho.

Anything I should be concentrating on when picking out a Motherboard?

Depends on your usecase. You are going to use a dedicated GPU? How many USB ports do you need? How many RAM slots do you need? You like fancy LEDs? What socket? Always look for high quality capacitors being built onto the MB. Do you need a lot of case fans? Do you want to overclock?

I'd like a new mouse and am looking for some recommendations as my SteelSeries Rival 300 is becoming an annoyance (busted scroll wheel, rubber has worn down, out of warranty).

Ideally I'd like the mouse to be:
- $100 AUD or less.
- Good for large hands + fingertip grip.
- Wired.
- Just a few buttons, I've always found side buttons to be annoying due to how I grip the mouse.

So, it's time for me to build a whole new system. I need to shut down my Phenom II. I'll still use my old SSD and my HDD.

Basically, this is what I'm looking into right now:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($227.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 54.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus Z170I PRO GAMING Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard ($159.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($64.99 @ B&H)
Case: Fractal Design Define Nano S Mini ITX Desktop Case ($64.99 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: be quiet! 530W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Total: $577.95
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-08-31 17:54 EDT-0400

The case is set, I fell in love with that tiny case that can fit everything I need.

Regarding the graphics card, I will decide in a few weeks. I want to wait until prices of the new Radeons have settled and maybe I'll come across a good 1060 offer until then.

My main question would be what CPU cooler I should get. I like the idea of aio water coolers. In this list, I chose Corsair's H60 although I'm leaning more towards the Corsair H45. Does anyone have experiences with this model?
It seems to be pretty new and there are no reviews out there.

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction, CPU-cooler-wise.

Well, here's my current build in progress. I've been keeping a close eye on prices and purchasing parts at their lowest available costs. Though I've hit a point where it's going to take some pretty decent sales to do so.

I'm interested in the current MOBO because of the built in wifi and numerous USB ports. However I am still cutting costs where I can, and was debating on using a powerline adapter if need be. I don't expect to be overclocking the system.

Hello Gaf, my sister wants a new PC and I figure it might be better to build one than buy something like a CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme. I'm thinking that a 1060 6GB and an i5-6500 with 8GB ram will be more than enough for now. She doesn't play much at the moment aside from Minecraft but wants to branch out and for a PC that might be used for 5 years this would be a decent thing to work with.

It'll be my first build too, I'm looking to do one for myself once I start my job but this came up first.

So here's the parts list, mostly compiled from the spreadsheet in the OP. The budget is around $1k:
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($204.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($24.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H170N-WIFI Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard ($114.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 ($59.98 @ Newegg)
Storage: Sandisk SSD PLUS 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($44.99 @ B&H)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($47.49 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 3GB GAMING Video Card ($219.89 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case ($44.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($79.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit ($88.88 @ OutletPC)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF140 Red 66.4 CFM 140mm Fan ($12.15 @ OutletPC)
Keyboard: Cooler Master CM Storm Devastator Gaming Bundle Wired Gaming Keyboard w/Optical Mouse ($19.99 @ Newegg)

Edit: Updated some of the parts. Switched to a H170N-WIFI Mini mobo since it includes the wifi and is cheaper than buying them separately, gonna go with 2x 8GB DDR4-2133 ram since it's included as a bundle on Newegg, and taking a 3GB GTX 1060 since I can't find any 6GBs at $250.

If anyone could take a look and point out any glaring issues I would be very grateful.

Also, what's the deal with case fans? They're not mentioned as parts in the OP but it seems like they're pretty important? I guess the quantity would be dependent on the case?

So what's the consensus so far. 480 or a 1060? 1070 seems like a whole another price tier with no drop in sight. Trying to stay under $300.

My current media build is rocking a Asus GeForce GTX 970 DirectCU Mini graphics card.

Decided to give Witcher 3 a whirl from the sofa last night...my god the fan on this thing! It looked really pretty but i had to turn it off after a while - just too noisy.

Any suggestions for reducing fan noise??

Having a strange issue ever since installiing my new Acer XB321HK 4K GSYNC monitor last night.

Sometimes when I am playing a game, the screen goes black for a second and "No Display" shows up on screen. Then it goes back to normal. I've swapped Display Port cables, set the overclock on my Titan XP back to stock, yet it is still happening. Only does it under full load. Happened in Deus Ex Mankind Divided and Battlefield One beta. PC works fine on desktop and light applications.

You guys think this is a monitor or PSU issue? On the latest Nvidia 372.70 drivers.

Unrelated, but I've been having some rare Memory Management and other ram related BSODs on Windows 10 for the past month as well. Lowered memory speed from 2666mhz to 2133mhz and voltage from 1.25v to 1.2v yesterday. Hasn't happened since, but not sure if that is a coincidence or not.

It's 16GB of G.Skill I bought last year. Can't find my receipt though so I don't think I can RMA. Anyone got suggestions for a high quality 32GB kit? On an X99 mobo.

Thanks.

Well I have neither and I game at 1080p on the living room TV.

Which one can you find for a better price? I'd suggest 8GB for the 480 or 6GB for the 1060. Even if there's not a huge difference now with regard to the VRAM, there is in some games and that's likely to increase as time moves forward.

Just ordered an RX480 Nitro+ 8GB.

Newegg.ca has them in stock right now for $370 CAD (which is roughly equal to the $280 USD American price). I could have gotten a dual-fan GTX1060 for around $350, but I keep my cards for a long time (currently upgrading from a GTX670 DCII) so the extra memory + async won me over.

Honestly both cards are pretty neck-in-neck right now, but Doom Vulkan showed a massive improvement for the RX480, and the Nitro's overclocking can help alleviate the DX11 gap a bit. Freesync and Crossfire also factored into my decision.

I haven't had an AMD (ATI) card since 2012, hopefully things go smoothly...

What are people's opinions on Fractal Designs Nano 202?

Few other questions:

Would the stock intel cpu fan be enough on a i5 6500 in that small of a case? Also thinking of adding one, maybe two? case fans behind a EVGA 6GB GTX 1060.

This would be my first PC build would like something that could be a desktop computer but also not look weird in the living room connected to a TV. Mostly worried about overheating.

Also is it expected that the price of 1060s will go down in Canada / US over the next few months when stock evens out? Currently $350 + in Canada at the moment.

The Node 202 is a great case if you need your build to fit in an entertainment center. If you're not super constrained by case height, a different case will be a lot easier. The Node 804 follows the same design language, but fits a much larger variety of components.

The stock cooler is "enough" in that it will keep your cpu from thermally throttling itself, but you'll have a better experience with an aftermarket cooler. It'll be much quieter and keep your cpu cooler.

I finished my build last week and I've noticed theres cpu spikes on task manager to 100% it causes my pc to freeze for like 30 secs to a min. Could this be a thermal paste issue or a driver issue? I do use firefox but on my old pc i never had a problem it seems to be more frequent when I use firefox

What is the fastest 1080 available?

Edit: Damn, I was really hoping it wasn't the amp extreme still, it looks like ass.
The cheapest, the 1070 and 1080 overclock for absolute garbage and all seem to top out about the same anyway so it doesn't matter. They don't get hot so cooling doesn't matter either.

Stock is fine, pc's sip power now, same goes for 1060 under load. Just have at least one good intake and exhaust.

Could be driver or bad hardware, use a temp tool in the OP to see if CPU is <65C under a loaded task.

Why do you wanna go with an Mini-ITX board in an ATX case? :p
Not that it's impossible but don't expect the Wifi to be anything special and installing the cooler on that small board will also be a bit of a mess (from the looks of it, it will barely fit and maybe even block access to either the PCI-Express or RAM slots) . I would go with an ATX board or mATX. The latter are cheaper. If possible pull a network cable to your PC. Powerline adapters don't have that much throughput. If there is no other way than wifi, you could go with this board but I would suggest a smaller chassis in this case. Your Power Supply is also a bit overkill. 500-600W should sufficient.

So apparently i need to upgrade something on my PC, i tried playing Battlefield 1 on Ultra, got 60-70 fps for a few minutes, after it dipped down to about 4 fps, and stayed at 4 fps.
What could be causing this?

Specs said:
Intel Core i5 6500 @ 3.20GHz
8.00GB DDR4 Ram
Radeon HD7970 3GB

I'm planning on buying a new graphics card in a couple of weeks, would that resolve it? Should i get more ram?

Dropping to 4FPS after a few minutes sounds like a bug or faulty drivers. I don't think you need any new HW. (Well... maybe double the RAM, yo)
