I'm about to purchase a Seagate 4TB Gaming SSHD (ST4000DX001) from amazon for $145, it comes with FarCry Primal. Any reason I shouldn't get this drive?

Is it worth moving to the MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming Z 8G from the MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6GB?

I want more VRAM for future proofing, better DX12 support and that good old Nvidia driver favouritism.

I don't think it's worth it unless you can sell the 980 Ti for the same price or more than the current cost of that 1070. A 1080 would be the better purchase or wait for a potential 1080 Ti.

No, the 1070 is a side grade at best. Go for at least 1080 or preferably Titan X.

Hi everyone! I'm aiming to build a new PC before the end of the year, with the hope of using it for VR (with the Vive, if that makes a difference). I'm wondering what I should prioritize most for VR in the long term. Here's what I'm choosing between:

1. i7 6700K and GTX 1070 (prioritize processor over GPU)
2. i5 6600K and GTX 1080 (prioritize GPU over processor)
3. i5 6600K and GTX 1070 (save a little money, hoping to still be okay for VR for the near future)

One other thing - I'm interested in supersampling with the Vive (I believe that's what the term is?) to improve the image quality. Not sure if that would make a difference in the choices above.

Decided to take a break from Battlefield 1 on Xbox to work on my computer. Almost finished. Wire clean up tomorrow night and I'm done I think.

Should I get Windows 10 Home or Pro?

Is there any advantages for a basic user? From the description, it seems like I'm not missing out on much.

I wondered about that, but it has excellent reviews.

There is also a WD40EZRZ (WD Blue 4TB) for around $115 but it is 5400rpm with no NAND flash to speed things up. I've read somewhere it could be a re-branded green, so no idea if that's good or bad.

I have a 1TB Blue and 2x 250GB Blues. One of the 250s is my boot drive the other will get sold soon. The 1TB Blue is my storage/game drive but I am thinking of just making it the boot drive and then use a larger 4TB+ for my storage/game/media drive.

Hmm, maybe I could just buy 2x 4TB Blue drives and setup a RAID

So I have a bit of a complex situation for my upgrade. At the end I hope to have 1 souped up machine to do my video editing and gaming on and another to store most of the video files that I'm not using on the current project. My main concerns are 1) is this a good looking build and 2) how will I go about transferring Windows?

So here is the build:

I'm a bit hesitant about the memory speed. I'm not sure if it is worth it to go a bit faster. Is the video card worth it or should I spend the extra $50 on a better one? I grabbed the cheapest 1080. Is there a better case? I was looking at the NZXT S340, but I like the way the drives are oriented in the H630. I'll cover storage in a second, so that's not a concern right now.

The issue with Windows is this. In my computer right now, I have a 1TB HDD that Windows 10 is on, a 500GB SSD, and another 1 TB HDD that is acting as a storage drive for the video files. I have another 500GB HDD that is disconnected along with 2 320GB HDDs. The plan is to have the 500GB SSD have Windows on the new machine with a 1 TB drive and the 500GB drive also. My current machine would have 1x 2TB, 1x 1TB, 2x 320GB. I have a spare copy of Windows 7 that I was going to use for the file machine. How do I go about getting Windows 10 onto the new machine on the SSD?

Any WB Blue that is larger than 1TB was rebranded Green, with power saving feature turned off. They no longer have that long delay when you access the drive, but they aren't fast.

pro can encrypt files with bitlocker, can join a domain (a big workgroup with a server and stuff, if thats the right definition), and remote controlling capabilities

home is good if you dont need those things.

Hey guys, debating between the following two 32GB memory kits. Does it matter that one is listed for Z170 and the other is for X99?

Like, can I use the Z170 memory on my X99 mobo wihout any drawbacks? Because it is $5 cheaper and has better CAS Latency.

If you are interested in supersampling, definitely go for option number 2. A 6600k is still more than fast enough to drive any game, VR or not, but the additional GPU power provided by the GTX 1080 will not go to waste.

Of course a CPU usually lasts a lot longer, so the 6700k might be a more future proof solution if you plan to swap GPUs when the next gen stuff comes around.

Go for Home. I've got Pro, but it does not offer any advantages for the basic user.

It's just DDR4 ram, no difference. They are just calling it X99 kit because it comes with 4 sticks.

The In Win 909 is a nice case. Definitely not as silent as the Fractal R series though.

Pro for group policy editing, which will let you registry edit out some of the forced Microsoft applications.

After some research it looks like any 4TB drive has pretty low failure rates. By low I mean under 4% which is high but low for seagate.

Picked up the 4TB Seagate Hybrid. I'll use the 1TB WD Blue for backing up critical files and see how it goes.
I'll get a larger/slower WD later for backing up work related stuff. I think this hybrid drive sounds like a good solution for me.
Guess I'll find out soon enough.

In the never ending story of shit that goes wrong with my PC, 4 of the USB ports and the bluetooth receiver on my Mobo have just straight up stopped working.

I'm hoping against hope it's something to do with the PSU rather than the mobo itself. If it's the mobo I'll just be giving up PC gaming for a couple of years, can't afford this shit.

And I just got a new graphics card for the first time in 5 years :(

Also thought the GPU was idling at too high a temp (nearly 60 degrees, more than I've ever noticed before) so fired up TW3 just to see what happened under load and it very quickly went up to 78 degrees, also more than I've ever seen before. I dunno what the fuck is going on here.

Could use some overclocking advice.
So, got an i5 6600k, and everything I've seen says I should be able to get it to 4.5Ghz
Whenever it's under load though, the multiplier drops way down. What do I do to get this thing to stay at 4.5?

GAF help me out on this, home PC is going out the window, PC will mainly be used for work related purposes but if I am going to buy a PC I want to get something that will play the odd game here or there that pops up on special, thinking things like the latest Doom, Street Fighter V with mods and so on.

Will this be sufficient for playing any recent games?

http://www.evetech.co.za/Computer-systems/intel-core-i5-pro-gaming-pc-255.aspx

The only thing I may change is just upping the 8gb ram to 16gb.

So you did apply OC to it? How did you do it? Multipliers throttle down might point to excessive heat. Did you use any auto-overclock tool? BIOS tool included?

Needs a better GPU IMO, Doom isn't gonna be that brilliant on a 950, and any game 2 years from now is probably gonna run pretty badly. If there's any way to replace the 950 with an RX470 you may want to do that.

Hm thanks, there is an option for to replace 950 for a MSI RX 470 GAMING X 8GB OC Ed. GDDR5 for an additional R2k.

I changed the multiplier in the bios.

So you put the multipliers to 45 and left everything else as is?

That's the problem. You have to set the voltage too, otherwise the motherboard will apply it automatically and it will always be way higher than necessary, which leads to overheat and throttle.

Even if it can hold 43, it will be not ideal with too much voltage. Lower lifespan and heat.

Use HWinfo64 to see how much it is being applied and how hot it is running.

Apply around 1.25v and see how it fares from there.

Yeah, I had it at 1.25v for the 4.3Ghz.

The Nitro+ is supposed to run at around 75C

I just ordered a Zotac GTX 1080 AMP and Dell S2417DG (2560x1440, 165hz, GSync) today.

It should be here in the morning, but I currently have a 4670K at stock on a H97 motherboard. Will I be bottle-necked massively, or should I be okay?

I picked up a 1070, upgrading from a 7870. I was pretty disappointed with Watchy Dogs. It seems poorly optimized. My frame rate stays fairly consistent regardless of resolution, quality setting. Ex: if I max everything out, my fps goes from 60-100. If I change the settings to medium, I still get 60-100. GTA V I can get 60fps with everything pretty much maxed. I really want to pick Doom and The Witcher 3 up on a sale since they seem to be the eye candy game for now.

We really need a monitor thread. With the wide range of refresh rates/ screen sizes and sync technology, I have no idea what monitor I need for my GTX 1070. I don't want to may a purchase I will regret. I was looking at LG Ultrawides to begin with and then started looking for 144hz with G sync. Decisions, Decisions.

I know a ton about monitors. Currently own arguably the 3 best gaming ones on the market. Post your budget, and I'll help you out.

Looking around to buy a new desktop. Gaming isn't my primary concern, but still if I buy something new I can just as well buy something that I can play games on.

Most important is general OS tasks and silence.

This is what I currently am thinking about. Prices in EUR (from alternate.be - a belgian webshop)

Any improvements/recommendations? Either pricewise or performance for a similar price.

No way should you be buying a 750Ti, especially at that price point. Pick up a GTX 1060. Get rid of the extra SSD if you need to to afford it.

Also, get a better brand of PSU. Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic.

4-600 dollars. GTX 1070/6700k combo.

A little over that budget, but I'd recommend the ASUS PG278Q. 1440p, 144hz, GSYNC. Your 6700k/1070 combo should be able to max out all current games at that resolution.

If you want to save some money, you could look into picking up a used one. There's a bunch available on ebay and I might be putting mine up in the GAF B/S/T thread.
