CPUz is pretty accurate to 0.01v usually.

Depends:
What is the idle vcore
What is the load vcore
What are you using to load the CPU
What is load line calibration set to

Idle vcore ~1.20-1.25v
Load vcore ~1.38v
Prime95 - Blend
LLC - "High"

I'm guessing it's the "high" setting on the LLC that's doing it.

thinking of getting 2x8GB DDR3 1600 first to upgrade from my 2x4GB DDR3 1333 RAMs

Hi guys. My post got lost in the commotion a few pages back, sorry to post the same thing twice. The purpose of the this PC is solely for video games. I intend to run games at 1440p maxed out (hopefully at 60fps or higher to work with the monitor).

These are the parts I am looking at. If some part/brand names look fishy it might be because there are some differences in branding in Japan compared to the west.

Buying new:

Motherboard:
ASUSTeK Intel Z170 PRO GAMING (ATX)
CPU: i7 6700k
Memory: Corsair DDR4 Vengeance 16gb*2 (32gb) 3000mhz
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500gb
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX (*1)
GPU: MSI Geforce 1080 Gaming X (or other depending on availability and pricing here)
Monitor: Acer Predator x34

Carrying over from old build:
Case: Fractal Design R4 (*2)
PSU: 850W Gold

Questions:

(*1) - Regarding the H100i GTX I have read some mixed reports about the possibility of complications with mounting this to the Fractal Design R4. Has anyone encountered issues relating to this or have any information?

(*2) - I'm not actually 100% certain mine is a R4 or R5 model, however I have seen that the R5 front cover can be changed to open from the left or right, and mine does not have this option. I'm assuming it is the R4.

It's been a long time since I've bought parts, so I'm quite excited and looking forward to renewing my gaming situation.

Any help is greatly appreciated as always.

I have one and 165hz is amazing with G-sync. Can't get that with the 27AQ. 4K isn't that great atm, and losing the refresh rate is a downgrade, imo.
Although a 4K (or even 5K) display at this size would be amazing, I don't think it would be worth it because most games aren't going to be played at that resolution. Unless you're going to get two 1080s or something. :p

Going to be diving in to the 1000 series gpus later this month, I currently have an i5 2500k at 4.5ghz on this mobo. What is the best Ram upgrade I can make, planning on moving to 16gb from 8, and I currently run either 1066 or 1866, I cannot remember.

edit: Ram is running 1600 after further inspection.

Yes, you won't have constant 60 fps, but since you have G-Sync it's alright.

just throwing this out there for anyone that wants to answer...

what would be a better way to go for a monitor upgrade down the road...buying the AOC G2460PG monitor (1080p/144 Hz/G-Sync) or buying a 1440p/60 Hz monitor that costs around the same price?

I'll be getting a 1070 card once they actually release the non-FE ones so I'm just trying to figure out what would be better to pair with it eventually

1080p 144Hz G-Sync for games IMO.

For me 60Hz to 144hz is a bigger jump than 1080p to 1440p.

I'd like to get a GTX 1080 sometime in the next couple of weeks. Does anyone have any recommendations on which specific card to get? Taking into account availability, performance, etc. The price isn't a huge deal except that I'm not going to pay a markup from amazon sellers or anything like that. I'd just like the best card that I can actually get my hands on, and will probably add another one in a couple of months.

I'd probably just get another 2 sticks of 4GB DDR3. You're not going to see much benefit from the clock speed increase.

As far as 3360x1440 goes, the GTX 970 won't do so well. You'll be well under 60fps for many titles. VRAM could also be an issue at that res.

What games/kinds of games do you play?

FPS/twitchy anything.... 165hz. Otherwise it's a toss up.

I like 1440p/165 personally. Have you used a high refresh rate monitor?

I am about to pull the trigger on my next setup. This will be accompanied by GTX1070, my Samsung 850 EVO (500GB) and WD Green (1TB)

Cpu: Intel Core i5-6600K 3,5 GHz LGA1151 270,90 €
Case: Fractal Design Define Mini Black Pearl Micro-ATX 97,90 €
Motherboard: Asus Z170M-PLUS Intel Z170 LGA1151 micro-ATX 137,90 €
Memory: G.Skill RipjawsV DDR4 3200 MHz 16 Gt (2 x 8 Gt) 93,90
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 41,90 €
Psu: Cooler Master V750 - 750 W ATX 143,90 €
Thermal paste: Arctic Silver 5 - 3.5g Premium Silver Thermal Compound 12,40 €

Planning to play at 1080p and will do some overclocking. I ran it through pcpartpicker and there didn't seem to be any compatibility issues (apart from having to remove disk tray to fit the gtx 1070).

Any final words before I submit my order?

Only seen some tests for the Asus Geforce GTX 1080 Strix, MSI GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G and the Inno 3D GTX 1080 iChill X3.

All cards are able to reach ~2ghz clock speed without trouble but temperatures and fan performances tell a different story. So far the Asus strix seems to be the 'best' choice.

4k - Witcher 3 Blood and Wine, Ultra Settings but deactivated Hairworks. Don't compare fps, obviously the scenes are quiet different.

For reference the 1080 FE: 82°C - 1721mhz - 94% fan speed
1080fem4ptt.png

Asus strix: 73°C - 2025mhz - 64% fan speed (custom OC)

Inno 3D GTX 1080 iChill X3 78°C - 1987mhz - 100% fan speed (custom OC)
inno10803xzppd3.png

The MSI also seems to be good and way better than the 1080FE and better than the inno.

Still waiting for gigabyte and evga. Their 970/980 designs were very good.

Looks fine but unless you need that 750W PSU, you could get away with a 550/600W one for half the price which will be fine even if you are overclocking both the GPU and CPU.

I'm guessing it's the "high" setting on the LLC that's doing it.

Yep most likely, if your using manual vcore and are seeing 1.2v idle but set 1.3v in bios then something odd is happening.
Exactly how have you set vcore in bios? Manual, offset or adaptive?

I currently have a modular one, but I threw out all excess cables back then, and now I kinda need to longer cables to run them through the back of the case.

Are these type of cables universal across all PSU's? Because my PSU is out of production.

I believe they all use the same format yes. If all you need are longer cables then just buy some extensions for your existing ones rather than whole new cables.

If you want to run two in the same case without watercooling then just make sure you've got enough airflow into and out of the case. The non reference designs will cool the card quieter and better than reference, but they dump all the heat into the case where the reference will dump it out the back.

Hi Gaf, I have wanted a gaming PC for the past couple of years but I am a genuine noob and a past PC gaming hater (forgive me) and console only gamer. Hear me out because I am not even sure If PC gaming is for me. I am about as ignorant as they come and my exposure to PC gaming is about as minium as they come. Anyway please read on if I haven't already pissed some of you off!

I am a console gamer and always have been! In fact I have never used a Keyboard Mouse combo to play a game ever. I got interested in PC gaming after a person on my Wii U friendlist who i did a favour for, gave me a Steam code for Toki Tori. He assured me my very average notebook could play the game so I downloaded Steam and played it using a wired xbox 360 controller on my TV via a HDMI connection. Pardon my ignorance but I was amazed at it all.

Fast forward to early this year and I was seriously eyeing an Alienware Alpha i3 model. Having read GAF and hearing people here talk express the Alpha as a poor substitute for a real gaming PC, I come here for some advice.

I want to start dipping my toes but I still plan on mainly playing it through my PC and with a gaming controller. PC Monitors, Gaming keyboards and mouses are really not in my immediate plans (Please don't hate me).

My main goal is to have a PC that can run the type of games I buy on console and look and perform better than my PS4/XB1 and with a controller. I am kind of poor but I am willing to spend up to AU $1500 (Currently US $1100).

Any help, advice, constructive criticism would be appreciated.

A secondhand pc with a r9 290 4gb, 3570k, 256gb ssd, 8gb ram and other stuff like mobo and psu for €500.

Yay or nay?

So GAF,I think I finally have my build complete, any advice will be helpful:

I7 6700K
Asus Maximus Hero
G.Skill trident z 32 gb 16x2 3200mhz cl14 (already bought)
evga 1080gtx acx 3.0 (I guess the OC extra doesnt worth it if I can do it by myself?)
wd caviar black 2tb
samsung 950 pro 256 gb (still not sure if going for the evo 500 gb will be a better idea)
fractal design define r5 blackout
coolermaster hyper 212x
evga 650w p2 (read excellent reviews on this unit..still not sure if universally comaptible,I want to buy it from Amazon US and use it in europe..will it be ok?)
logitech g502 spectrum (already bought)
senhheiser hd 598 se (already bought)
xbox one controller with that shitty wireless dongle(already bought)
windows 10 home (currently using xp so no upgrade for me)

Any ideas/opinions? I am not a tech savy so your opinions do matter to me..
Thanks have a great day :)

I dunno if this is the right thread, but given it's a PC-centric one I thought I'd ask here, please let me know where to go if I'm wrong.

My PC auto-updated to Windows 10 a couple of weeks ago, from 8.1. I never had any issues with 8.1, but since moving to 10 I get micro-stutter in my games that's quite annoying. I'm not sure what's causing it, but for some reason, every time I quit a game that's on Steam or Origin or Battle.net the application is re-scaled and moved to the top-left corner of the desktop.

I normally have each application centred, and I wonder if there's some funny windowed/fullscreen thing going on. To clarify, when I launch a game from say, Steam, the Steam app is centred on my desktop. When I quit the game, Steam has been shrunk and is now in the top left of the screen. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Did this ever happen to anyone else? Any ideas how to solve it?

Yay.

Country? I think we can hardly do better than that, but just to make sure.

Probably yay but i would check the PSU and mobo.
Do you have a full spec list?

Netherlands.

Full spec list: Intel i5 3570k, Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme (cpu cooler), ASRock Z77 Extreme4, 8GB Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB DDR3 1600mhz, Sapphire R9 290 4GB GDDR5, Crucial M4 256GB, Sharkoon T9 Value case, OCZ modxstream pro 700w.

That's it. I think even windows 10 inlcuded.

No longer any warranty on the stuff though.

The stutter thing will probably be more complicated to troubleshoot but let's try this first anyway.

Download new driver for your video card.
Download and install DDU.
Choose to boot to safe mode.
Clean and restart.
Install the driver, choose clean installation if available to be sure.

Why in the ... would you do that?! Even if it the base price is cheaper, the chance you won't get gauged by customs is highly unlikely, if anything is wrong with it you might have to send it all the way back (which will cost you a pretty penny) and you have to get another cord. But they do appear to be universal.

Everything else looks fine BTW.

Alright so I'm in the market for a new case and want whatever setup for about $80 will do the best job of dampening fan noise (both over air, obviously) as I'm sick of how loud the GPU fan in my current case is. I'm imaging setting up a better fan configuration with the case fans should help keep temps and thus fan noise down. I do have a custom fan curve optimally setup, for the record. What sort of case/case fan setup should I look into?

Nothing wrong with being a console only gamer and the alpha is not really a good deal, mainly because of the weak 860m gpu.
If you want to go for exclusive gamepad PC gaming on your TV, than sure why not. It's definitely possible to build something descent with this amount of money and the beauty of an open system like the pc is that you can achieve nearly everything.

TOTAL:1223 AUD without a GPU!

+ estimated 280 AUD for a RX 480

~1500 AUD

notes:
-GPU:I didn't include a gpu in this build for one simple reason: The RX 480 seems to be a good match for what you want to achieve and should give you much better performance than the gtx 960 that you could buy right now for the remaining ~280 AUD. But it's not available yet. Just wait a bit, it shouldn't be too long.
-man, stuff is really expensive over there for you guys.
-This isn't the best or the smallest mini ITX build ever created, but as you stated that you have no experience with building PCs I'd rather recommend to build something capable and easy to assemble instead of something even smaller. Still watch the tutorials posted by Hazaro and some tutorials for the Cooler Master Elite 130 Mini ITX Tower Case. It's a popular case and you should be able to find enough videos on YT, even if they use different coolers, Mainboards (etc) the steps are the same. Overall it's not difficult to build, just work calmly and do everything step after step. It's rather hard to do something wrong if you follow instructions.
-I included a cheap wireless keyboard+mouse combo because you'll definitely want one from time to time. Just in case.

What's your budget?

Do you need an optical drive?
If you can wait a couple of weeks you might consider the AMD 480x which should be less than that GPU but similar or better performance

Any reason why you went with the 4690k? An i5-6600k is about the same price (£195 at Overclockers) and pair it with a z170 motherboard should be a better option for barely any extra money

Any reason why you went with the 4690k? An i5-6600k is about the same price (£195 at Overclockers) and pair it with a z170 motherboard should be a better option for barely any extra money

Budget is probably around £750 - £850 give or take.

Now that you mention it I do have external USB drive that would probably do the job for anytime I might need to rip or write any DVDs.

Didn't know about the AMD480x I don't mind waiting a little while or even getting the rest of the components while I wait on the GPU.

Honestly no reason for the CPU just my lack of experience, i5's seemed to be the way to go from what I read so I just picked that one.

Ok so i'd definitely get an i5-6600k and a z170 motherboard then (don't have any recommendations to which exact board but someone here will)

And try and get 16GB ram - 8GB is ok but getting 16 now will see you through the next few years. I bought a kit of DDR4 3000 (2x8GB) for around £50

Yay, switched out my i5 2500k to a i7 3770k, works great.
But now I can't run my ram in 2133 mode anymore, maybe it's a motherboard limitation?(ASRock P67 Extreme)

Will I get a big fps boost going from a i72600k @4.2 DDR3 to a i76700k DDR4? Wondering if I should even bother.

Can give you up to 25 fps in CPU heavy games like GTA V, Witcher 3 or even Far Cry 4 when paired with high end gpu like a 980Ti, Titan X, 1070 or 1080.

Hmm strange, should work. Are on the newest bios? Are you overclocking RAM yourself (or are you using the xmp setting)?

In general, probably not "big." But possibly worthwhile. It depends on what GPU you have and what resolution/refresh rate you game at. Specs?

Yes and tried both. The PC tries to boot 3 or 4 times and then the UEFI is giving me a chance to enter the bios and change the settings. It worked with my i5 2500k so no idea what I am missing.

Sorry mate would love to give you something but I really have no idea what could be wrong here. Normally I'd blame your ram but their XMP worked before, why shouldn't it work now. You could try to reset your bios/uefi (there should be a CMOS clear button on asrock extreme boards or you could unplug your PSU and remove the battery on your motherboard for 2 minutes or so) and hope that this will fix whatever is wrong but honestly I don't even know why it should.
