Give me a couple of hours to get to work and I'll help ya with the build I found

Nice, thanks! Yeah typically NYC apartment so SFF is great - really anything small and sleek that doesnt clutter up a desk area. Not going to go nuts on overclocking but want something future proof so I can play max settings (on 1080p) for the next year or so.

Is there a way to move my Windows installation from my current SSD to a new one? I was gonna keep it, but have decided I want what little I can get out of it for my 1070 fund. I don't care about losing my data, everything is backed up on externals and cloud anyway and reinstalling programs doesn't take long with my connection. If I opt to do a clean install through the reset PC option, will it let me choose which drive to use so I can safely remove the original after?

Hey guys, thinking of building a new PC but not sure if I should go all out or just upgrade some parts. I want to be able to run 3440x1440 with G-Sync smoothly... will a 1070 be enough or do I need to spring for a 1080? The main things I want to upgrade are monitor, case, and GPU. Unsure if I should upgrade everything else while I'm at it.

Currently I'm playing games like SF4/5, Blizzard games, Rainbow Six Siege... I don't think I do that much AAA gaming on PC.

My relevant current specs are below, thanks.

Asus Sabertooth Z77 motherboard
i5 3570K @ 4.3GHz
16GB DDR3 RAM
AMD R290
Dell U2711 monitor
Seasonic 760W Platinum PSU
Samsung 840 Evo 256GB SSD

I would just clone the drive using Macrium Reflect.

So I am torn between coolers for my 6600K (building Friday !!!!!!). The EVO 212 seems to be the popular choice but I've heard that it isn't that great. I've looked at others like Noctua but I cannot decide. I'm spending some good money on my build so I don't want to lose it because I went cheap on a CPU cooler I might overclock down the road. I would prefer to spend no more than $70 and my case can fit a 165MM CPU cooler

EVO 212- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005O65JXI/?tag=neogaf0e-20 $29

Noctua NH-U9S- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TBHYYFK/?tag=neogaf0e-20 $60

Or is there another selection that you can suggest?

A 980 Ti and a Titan X were both great 1440p cards, so a 1070 which is slightly better than both will be a good choice for 21:9 ultra-wide resolutions.

Sending my PC into DinoPC to get the PSU replaced, which seems to be the source of my coil whine (upgrading from a GTX 770 to 970 didn't change anything in that regard). My current PSU is a Corsair 650w TX V2. Would a 650w CS Modular be a good replacement? Or would I be better off going for something like the 750w RMX? Single-GPU system (970 G1), i7 4770K CPU and 16GB RAM.

I've had a 212 on my Phenom II 955BE for almost 7 years at max overclock this chip can handle (3.2->4.0 GHz), despite cooler. I plan on using it again next week on an i7-6700k.

However, if you look up reviews, the Noctua is the better cooler. All depends on what you're comfortable on spending.

How are Amazon UK for hardware returns? I've been having awful problems with Overwatch and I think it's either the game or my PSU (I have thoroughly tested every other piece of hardware with no issues). If I were to buy one and it not be the problem could I return it? I can't afford to burn £85.

Whatever you buy mail order you have th did stance selling regulations on your side, which gives you 7 days to change your mind and return an item. On top of that Amazon are usually excellent with returns, assuming you keep everything packed back up as new

I have a Fractal Design R5. If I plan on getting a EvGA SC 1080 and overclocking it, as well as overclocking my i5-6600K, would I need additional case fans to deal with the heat? (The R5 comes with two 140mm fans)

I'm currently still rocking a 2500k (@4.5GHz) with a GTX 970. I use my computer for games, casual browsing etc., and some hobby photography using Adobe Lightroom. I have a 1440p@60Hz monitor and also have a Vive.

I have noticed the 970 isn't doing very well at my display resolution resolution with modern games, and with VR I'm really at the bare minimum. With that in mind, I'm contemplating whether I want to simply upgrade my videocard again or if I should upgrade the computer entirely. I suppose the question is whether the 2500k is holding me back or if it's still primarily the GPU.

I played some Project Cars on the Vive yesterday, and despite having nearly all settings on low it was rarely hitting 90fps. I'm leaning towards getting a GTX 1080 once the non-founders editions are widely available, but am wondering if my CPU will be major bottleneck.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cryorig makes a good cooler as well. AFAIR, between the EVO and Noctua in performance, and cheaper than the EVO to boot.

A 2500k can definitely bottleneck a 970 in some games. Use MSI Afterburner to see how much usage you get from your CPU cores and GPU.

Probably, but you can try just running them fast at first to see how you get on.

Bump for new page. Could really use a hand!

Hey everyone!

Of course, with a new PC and a new install come new problems, but this seems to be an old one!

After waking from sleep, Windows 10 fails to detect my USB3 hard drive. When this happens I need to unplug it and plug it back in again, as even a reboot while leaving the drive plugged in causes it to still not be recognized. It's not in the disk management tool, and the USB mass storage driver is gone from the device manager.

I know I had this problem on my previous build and managed to solve it somehow, but none of the troubleshooting steps I've found works (integrated windows troubleshooting tool, disabling USB selective suspend, telling Windows to not let hard drives sleep, registry hacks...). I'm starting to think there may be a BIOS config problem. I've enabled Legacy USB support, but the drive doesn't show up under the list of USB storage devices in BIOS. xHCI hand-off is also disabled.

Mobo is a Gigabyte z170XP-SLI. Anyone have any experience with this kind of issue? I've resorted to not letting the computer go to sleep until I've solved the problem.

Edit. in other USB weirdness, before I implemented the registry hack detailed in this video, ALL of my USB devices would be disconnected at once on a regular basis, and would then be re-recognized, except for the USB3 drive. Also, if I left my USB external drive plugged in, none of my USB devices would be recognized before Windows boot, preventing me from using my USB keyboard to access the BIOS. If I unplug the drive before booting, everything is recognized in POST and I can access the BIOS.

Help!

Hi there. Problems with a build inspired by the builds in the OP.
Suspecting a mobo failure due to incompatibility with the GPU, but praying it's just a dumb mistake.
On paper, this build should have worked...but it doesn't seem to be.

AsRock Fatal1ty X99M motherboard
Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 32OO MHz - 32GB
Msi R9 390 Gaming 8G GPU
Intel Core i7-5820K 6-Core CPU
Corsair H100i v2 liquid CPU cooler
EVGA Super Nova 750W NEX750B power supply

I was building my first PC yesterday and all was going OK. I powered it on and all lights and fans worked, but I could not get video output. The debugger on the board was flashing codes for the gpu and chipset. The manual suggested to use a different slot or reseat the GPU. Re-seating didn't work so I just left it and went to bed. This morning I switched the gpu into PCIe slot 2 and powered on...nothing. No power at all! So, ofc I suspect the PSU and go about testing that with my multimeter. Turns out it's fine. But no response from the mobo still and have removed the gpu altogether.
Is it possible the GPU fried the mobo somehow? Or did the boogie man come and lay some bad mojo down on it while I was sleeping?

Check the cables, maybe you unsocketed one of the cables when reseating the gpu? Otherwise its not looking good I am afraid

Unplug everything not strictly necessary, double check all cables. Is the motherboard properly mounted on the standoffs, no loose screws or otherwise? Try ram in different slots etc. Can even try it outside of the case if you need to.

My guess is loose cables or something of the sort.

Yep, took out the gpu to check all cables, reseated, moved it, unplugged and re-plugged all power cables, switched the RAM, made sure it seated properly, nothin' Y_Y
Basically all I have been doing for hours. Weird thing is, it was fine (except no video output) last night but now it's just dead.

I'm thinking that even if RAM was not properly seated or was bad or the GPU is not in, the mobo would still light up. And its not.

Hm. So I got a new shiny i7 6700K from Intel Retail Edge. Thinking of finally upgrading my i5-2500K. That said, I don't know if I should wait it out and upgrade my GPU too. My monitor is the Dell U2515H, so 1440p. Thinking of just upgrading everything but keeping my GPU. Thoughts? I'm happy with the current performance of my 970, not sure if a 1070/1080 is a justifiable upgrade when I'm only gaming on 1440p. Any opinions?

I would just clone the drive using Macrium Reflect.

So I'm getting an error: "target disk has an incompatible sector size." The new SSD (drive D) has nothing on it and I have formatted it multiple times. Anybody know? I reaaally don't want to have to buy Windows again. My school (CC) doesn't offer it and the local uni I got my last copy from (my mom works there) lost their MS license.

I mean, if you have the new CPU you might as well upgrade your platform, right? DDR4 and all that. As for the justifiability of upgrading from the 970, I'm facing the same dilemma. However, unlike you, I am increasing dissatisfied with my performance, and I'm only at 1200p (Dell 16:10). I am a proud graphics whore and I want high/ultra, not medium/high. At 1440p, I think jumping to the 1070 makes sense. I hope to pick up a 1440p monitor after getting my 1070. Obviously it isn't necessary, but at that res, I think you'll see a good jump in performance. Plus, dat 8GB VRAM will be increasingly useful I think.

Can you try formatting the new drive via Windows and select a 4096 sector size?

Highly considering waiting for the inevitable RX480X/RX490 + FreeSync 1440p combo. I would potentially save some serious cash and still get great peformance above 1080p.

Ahhh.. It's a great time to be a consumer.

Sorry, can you guide me a bit? I don't see a way to select a sector size doing the quick format. I'm probably in the wrong spot or just stupid from exhaustion and frustration.

Indeed, it is. I would love to switch to the red team this time around and I desperately want FreeSync or G-SYNC. Really hoping the 490 (or the new Fury if they do that before Vega) kicks major ass.

You were doing exactly what I was thinking. The sector size is probably firmware based then. Maybe try looking at the Reflect forums for a possible solution? I actually haven't ran into this problem cloning a few drives.

Is there a current consensus about what the best case for watercooling is that's under $500? I'm thinking of using my old closed loop cooler and putting it on a new GPU when I get one. I currently have a Silverstone FT02, and while it's an awesome case for air cooling, if I'm going to be using the closed loop watercoolers anyway, it's kinda moot.

That Caselab SM8 is pretty expensive. Is there a reason for that?

Their cases are made in very limited runs, and most of them are custom built made to order (there are lots of options on their site). They're also the best most flexible cases there are. And they are modular, so if you fuck something up when you're modding one of their cases, you can just order a replacement part from them.

Basically, you buy it, and then that can be your forever case.

Just wondering why the B150M is suggested along with DDR4 2400 RAM?

I just ordered these parts for a friend based on the first page list, but now I see that B150M only supports 2133. Is there any way to have the RAM run at full speed?

Guys I need help please :[

Here is the situation.

PC doesn't power on when the 8 pin CPU cable is in the mobo. I may press the power button 100s of times but nada, doesn't work.

When I disconnect the 8 pin CPU cable from the MOBO, PC powers on, and all fans are switched on.

What could be the problem?

I'm hoping the PSU is borked as that is more easily replaced but I honestly am scared the CPU or mobo is gone, and I really don't have the money to buy a new CPU and or mobo.

Buiding a new PC soon and will probably pick up a 1070. I intend to switch to a 27" 1440p monitor and use my current 24" 1200p monitor as a secondary. My current build is 6 yrs old and I have not been following the hardware scene much so I have no idea just how much benefit I will see from Gsync.

I looked at the Asus 27" PG279Q 165Hz monitor and it costs a bomb. So if I am understanding this right, should I buy this monitor, I must also make sure I am able to run games at 165 fps at 1440p to see the full benefits of Gsync? That seems kind of demanding. So if I don't intend to run my games at 165 fps, there is no point in paying for this monitor?

So far, so bad. :/
Gonna see if a fairy comes during the night and removes the curse on it.
I will bribe someone to look at it and test other components as well.
Then probably RMA it by the end of the day.
