That's not a bad deal I don't think.

Buiding a new PC soon and will probably pick up a 1070. I intend to switch to a 27" 1440p monitor and use my current 24" 1200p monitor as a secondary. My current build is 6 yrs old and I have not been following the hardware scene much so I have no idea just how much benefit I will see from Gsync.

I looked at the Asus 27" PG279Q 165Hz monitor and it costs a bomb. So if I am understanding this right, should I buy this monitor, I must also make sure I am able to run games at 165 fps at 1440p to see the full benefits of Gsync? That seems kind of demanding. So if I don't intend to run my games at 165 fps, there is no point in paying for this monitor?

I'm in your same boat planning a new upgrade, and am leaning towards the Dell S2716DG. I haven't found anything that convinces me the Asus is the worth the extra cost. I'm curious if a human can even perceive an additional 21Hz past 144Hz? Plus, with modern games, I'm not thinking we'll even be hitting those frames with a 1070 maxed out. Maybe 1080?

Anything over 120fps and you're golden imo. Don't sweat the 165fps number too much, and yea the best IPS panels at that size will easily cost more than a 4K 55" LED TV these days lmao. I'm getting the Acer Predator XB271HU myself which is almost identical to the PG27Q one you mentioned.

What system do I need to get over 60fps@4k resolution today in very demanding games like GTA5 and Witcher 3?? Is it even feasible? Thanks.

At max settings such card does not exist. If you bother to adjust the settings and accept some compromises a 1080 will do just fine at 4k. Otherwise the 1080 SLI is your only option with all the disadvantages that SLI gets.

I have a Dell S2716DG and it works fantastic for games. Only thing I don't like about it is that when on white backgrounds ghosting can be really noticeable. I had to switch to the dark theme on here just to not have the ghosting issue but it's not really bad with some setting tweaking

Would it be worth it to buy an AMD R9 390 at this particular moment in between new GPU releases? My 7950 just hasn't been cutting it lately :\

Asking cause there's an MSI r9 390 going for $290 on Newegg right now.

But what about CPU performance? Wouldn't that be the bottleneck? Or is higher resolution strictly tied to more GPU memory/performance?

Just use some force and rip it out...
i74JdU8.gif

Lol, but seriously don't do that. That looks like push to open latch and you should be able to reach and push it in with a index finger from between the gpu and cpu.

LOL

I actually can't; there isn't enough space below the card to actually get my finger in.

Use a screw driver to push it. Be careful though not to hit the motherboard.

Hmm. I'll have to give that a try. Finding a thin and long enough screwdriver will be tricky though.

Thanks guys :)

Hello, I was hoping you guys could help a friend with a build he's planning in the UK. I don't really know too much about building, but know that there are a lot of helpful people here! He is going to use it for general gaming, especially DOTA but also other newer/more demanding ones. No GPU is listed here because they are planning on picking up the 1070 when it's more widely available.

No parts are going to be reused from an older PC.

Budget is 800-900 pounds currently and location is the UK. No overclocking planned.

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/pV8G3F

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
GPU: 1070 whenever it is released/avaliable
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H170-D3HP ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory
Storage: Sandisk SSD PLUS 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage2: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair CX 500W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

Any suggestions or comments about this planned build would be greatly appreciated, thank you! Let me know if information is missing or anything, as well.

Neither has my 6950 :(

However, I think waiting for the 480/1070 is a much better option. At the worst, current card prices will drop.

I'll admit, I'm just getting impatient, but it seems like the 1070 and 480 are going to sell out extremely quickly and stay sold out for a while if the 1080 is anything to go by.

Hey Gaf!

So I got my Hero VIII and 6700k installed. OC'd 6700k to 4.5ghz and its completely stable.

The only thing is, it seems there is barely any difference over my 4.7ghz FX8350 cpu.

Witcher 3 has gained maybe 4-7fps.
Firestrike Ultra has gained maybe 100 points on average if even and one of my big 8350 Firestrike tests is still higher.

Underwhelming is an understatement...

I know 4k is pretty much GPU intensive but I expected more. Maybe I need to try more cpu intense games? I still expected my Firestrike score to beat my FX8350 scores by a good amount.

BTW: Using Asus 980ti OC Strix

What was the physics score part of the firestrike look like?

TBH at 4k you're just GPU bound and the Fiurestrike Ultra relies far more on GPU for the final score than CPU.

Hey there. Here is my latest firestrike run.

Here is one from my FX8350.

Wow my physics socre is almost 6k higher. Is a 14 401 physics score good for a 6700k?

Looks about right. I've not run one since overclocking to 4.7 and mine was 12,901.

Is your GPU not overclocked?

This was one of mine with my 2500k at 4.5 and my 980ti at 1450. My Graphics score is 330 higher than yours but as you cna see my CPU is half yours. My overall score is higher though because of the GPU part.

If you squeeze some more from your card you'll boost your framerates a bit further.

All looks ok. Though I'd try and get the 2400 memory personally it does seem that these chips respond well to faster memory.

One option would also be a bundle like this - £270 for the 6500, Asus Micro ATX board and 8gb of 2400 Kingston ram. Works out £27 less than the seperates picked there.

I usually only buy from OCUK, but then I get free shipping which makes a difference obvs.

I'm only using the ASUS Auto GPU overclock thingy and the GPU is apparently already OC'd (Strix 980ti OC edition). The way I saw it was, I bought a really expensive GPU and didn't wanna break it with an OC :p I should probably look up some guide on how to do it. Maybe I need to OC the memory clock?

While it is already overclocked, it'll have more headroom. It should be able to hit 1400 without too much trouble, and if lucky 1450 or higher.

It's really easy to do and quite difficult to kill a card with the standard options in a program like Afterburner.

The memory clock will do a little, but not as much as just doing the core.

A review of someone doing it for your card :) http://www.hardocp.com/article/2015...rix_dciii_oc_video_card_review/4#.V1kwjNIrKUk

Basically, up the power limit, and then up the boost clock and run heaven and keep going till it stops going further. Then try adding some voltage and more clock. If it doesn't like the changes you made it will get upset and might require a reboot. Apart from that, go for it!

Getting a new PC in few weeks/months It will be 1070/80 but I am have difficulty decided with monitor to get, Do I go for a 4K monitor or a 1440 one with G-synch. My budget is around £400. I would like a bit of future proofing I not that obsessed with mega high FPS.

I tend to upgrade every 2 generations of graphics cards, I have dodgy eyesight so I no objectives to lowering settings. I just want the next step from 1080

Resolution is usually GPU bound so any modern CPU will be fine. Consider a Skylake i5 6600K and at least DDR4 3000. I can make you a pcpartpicker list if you need one.

Alright guys. Haven't build a PC in almost 10 years so I really need a complete overhaul. Here's the setup I'm contemplating:

Ns5l3Nk.jpg

http://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/TDbXLD

Any inconsistencies or better/cheaper upgrades? My main hesitation concerns the freesync monitor (Asus MG248Q). I'm not really an avid PC gamer so I'm sure I'll be content with 1080p but is it really worth it? Otherwise I'll just go with a cheaper option like BenQ XL2411Z.

Would love some feedback.

PS: I have plenty of storage already hence the SSD only

Can you please? But it absolutely has to be able to do 4K at >= 60fps for the most demanding modern games at max settings.

My current system:
i5 2500k
980gtx SLI
16gb DDR ram

Then prepare yourself to turn down graphics quality settings. There is nothing available that can push every modern game at "maxed out" setting at 4k60+ no matter how much money you throw at your screen.

Hold off on the graphics card for a couple of weeks. AMD are about to release the RX480, which is substantially more powerful than the R9 380 you've got selected there at a similar price.

I have two silly questions.

Asus has three different types of downloads under chipset:
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170M-PLUS/HelpDesk_Download/

- Management Engine Interface V11.0.0.1181 for Windows Win7 64bit & Win8.1 64bit & Win10 64bit---(WHQL)
- Intel Chipset Driver V10.1.1.13 for Windows Win7 32bit & Win7 64bit & Win8.1 64bit & Win10 64bit---(WHQL).
- Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility V10.1.1.7 for Windows 7 32bit & 64bit / 8.1 64bit / 10 64bit.

- Do I need to install a version of them all? (What are the Management Engine Interface and Software Installation Utility for anyways?)
- Is there actually any need to install the other drivers (LAN, audio, SATA), or is it better to let Windows handle them?

It's been close to six years in the making, but tomorrow I'll be picking up the parts for my new VR-ready Mini-ITX build! Moving on up from my trusty (dying) Radeon HD 6950 build.

MOBO: Asus Maximus VIII Impact
CPU: Intel Core i7 6700K
RAM: G.Skills Ripjaws V 3200 32GB (2x16GB)
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 1TB
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 G1 Gaming
PSU: Corsair SF450

The only thing giving me pause is whether I should switch the Corsair SF450 out for the Corsair SF600... I picked the 450 because I'll initially be running everything at stock clocks, and online power supply calculators tend to suggest I could get away with the 450. It's a little cheaper, and a couple of reviews have indicated it might run a little quieter, which tipped me over the edge.

It does occur to me now, though, that if I want to get my feet wet with overclocking down the line, I'll almost definitely need the overhead the 600 would give me. Would that be a wise move?

I'm not sure about some things:
- Is the CPU Cooler good enough? I choosed the most rated, but I'm not expert
- Same question about Ram and the Seagate HDD, if they are not good, pls can you tell me what to choose instead?

Thanks!

What's the point of getting a 6700k if you won't overclock it? I'd spend the extra $20 or so and get a bigger PSU.

Code:
My current rig:

Mobo: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (Socket 1366)
CPU: i7-950
RAM: 6GB DDR3

But I feel now that I want to make the upgrade to skylake and DDR4 and hopefully also gain access to a thunderbolt port so I can get a better audio interface. I essentially want to make this an audio workstation that I won't have to upgrade for quite some time.

After more than five years with my trusty 2500k-based PC, I'll get a new PC soon. I'm going for a mini ITX case because I figured that I don't really need much more space anymore once I thought about it.

My currently planned new build: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/Gfy4D8

I'll keep the 970 from my current PC for now. I'm currently only using a 1080p 60 Hz monitor, but I'm eyeing one of those fancy upcoming 21:9 1440p 144 Hz GSync non-TN monitors. I guess with one of these, I'll need a more powerful graphics card anyway. My current PSU should do the job for now as well I guess.

The main point of this post is to ask if I'm missing anything obvious about the build above, because I haven't really kept up for the last few years and it'll be my first mini ITX PC. I had to take the more expensive Asus mainboard because the cheaper one doesn't allow me to fit the H100i cooler into the case. With this combo I've confirmed that everything fits into the case, although very tightly. I thought about the i7 6700k but after some research I don't really see it being worth 100€ more?

I'm glad for any advice or comments. Thanks!

Hi PC GAF. I'm wondering about getting a wireless gaming keyboard and mouse. Does such a thing exist? Is input response reliable? If it does exist, what's a good reasonably priced set?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure about a wireless keyboard, but a few wireless gaming mice exist. Most recently, the Logitech G900. It's not cheap, at $150 msrp.

Yeah, that's the downside of this mainboard. After some research and looking at the prices of PCIe M.2 SSDs, I've dedided to stick with 2.5" SATA3 SSDs for now though. I've honestly no idea what connector will be prevalent in a few years, M.2, U.2, SATAe? Also, apparently there are M.2-U.2 adapters, but I haven't looked into it yet.

My build is beginning to misbehave so finally i think i'm gonna jump to i7 6700k. I hope i will not regret it at the end of the year :p

So any recommandations for DDR4@3000mhz ?

Well, my new memory is here. Since DDR3 is so cheap these days I upgraded from 16GB G.Skill RipJawsX 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24 2T 1.5v to 16GB G.Skill RipJawsX 2133Mhz 10-12-12-31 2T 1.6v.

Hey guys, me again.

Now that I have a proper PC, I decided to remove my 2 HDDs out of my Synology DS212 and installed them into my new PC. However, Windows doesn't seem to want to give me access to my drives. I see them in Disk Management. But I'm not sure how to get access to my files?

I'm not sure about some things:
- Is the CPU Cooler good enough? I choosed the most rated, but I'm not expert
- Same question about Ram and the Seagate HDD, if they are not good, pls can you tell me what to choose instead?

Thanks!

Under no circumstance do you buy seagate, worst HDD company on the market. Western Digital or hitachi is much better.

You put them back in your Synology. The disk formatting and RAID implementations that Synology, QNAP, and pretty much any other NAS manufacturer use aren't compatible with Windows PCs, so you can't just plug them and read the data off them.
