That's my plan of attack. I'll be maintaining at 1080p60 once I upgrade to a Ryzen 1700 (held back by my 960 4 GB), but then late this year or early next year once I've saved a bit more and GPU prices have normalized (y'all miners can rot!) I'll grab an 1160 or equivalent for 1440p goodness.

Yes you will have to reauthorize. If you're having issues, just contact MS chat support and they'll help you out. Saved my bacon twice.

And after that once you install the driver's you're set. I'd also recommend downloading monitoring tools such as HWMonitor,CPU-z, etc.

So this is what im thinking about. My current GPU (970) burned down, so im kinda budget constrained in what and how to upgrade. I will use my old PSU/CASE/SSD etc.

I also have a 4k TV which i use for some games, like Dark Souls 3 or in general RPG type games. I am content with something like 40-60fps in those games. I like my eye candy in those games.
I know the 1060 is kinda weak for this, but gfx card prices are too shit at the moment and i cant spent too much more.

My main monitor is a crappy 1080p 75hz LG. This will probaply be swapped to a 1440p 120-144hz panel. But this will be a later upgrade.
My main use is normal gaming, no pro FPSer or anything like that. I want to stream some games, but more in a casual manner.

Is a r1600 enough for streaming something like Overwatch/PUBG/Souls without too much of a performance hit or would the r1700 be worth the upgrade? I dont find any good information on streaming between a r1600 and a r1700.
If im correct for non partners max settings on twitch are 720/60fps. i have pretty good internet, so something like 4000-5000bitrate would be my settings.

How much does Ram speed have an impact on streaming ? Some sites say up to a 5% performance hit while gaming, but streaming? Again keep in mind i'm not super sensitive about fps, 60fps is enough for me in most cases. Stable frames even if lower > high frames for me.

And as a kinda general question: i dont care at all about the looks of my hardware, the less colour/rgb/weird plates and gaming lingo the better. Are there any brands that didnt jump on the looks/gaming lingo train and actually give a better price or performance for the lack of money spent on ads and designer money ?

Yes, it would. Kabylake shares a socket with Skylake, but is not natively supported on Skylake boards - they need a BIOS update.

Also jesus christ the 7700k pumps out a lot of heat. I got a stable 5ghz overclock without any problems and after an hour of aida i checked the temps and max core temp was at 100c. Geeez what a bummer. Even 4.8ghz at 1.33 seems to go over 90c.

I just wanted to report a great experience with EVGA. I had a 980TI that was two years into the warranty. I'm guessing it was part of a bad batch affected the random freezes. It eventually became too much and I requested an RMA. No questions asked, and not only did I get a new card it is a 1080. So, they actually stand behind their products and the RMA process was pretty straight forward. Just a heads up if you are debating video card brands.

I personally reinstalled windows via usb, and then called Microsoft up to transfer my license. There's a program I downloaded before hand that revealed my Windows 10 key

I need some advice about upgrading my 5-6 year old PC (W10, 64bit, and UEFI, for that matter). My knowledge when it comes to hardware is fairly limited, but I believe only the video card needs to be upgraded. Here's my specs:

CPU: i7-2600K
RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz
GPU: ASUS GTX 570
PSU: Antec high current gamer 750w
Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 (Rev 3.1)
Case: Antec Solo II
Further, I have a liquid cooler (Antec KÜHLER H2O 620) for the CPU and a small fan (120mm) that came with the case.

So, what do I want to do? I want to be able to play current, and upcoming, more demanding games with good settings (medium/high or better) and 60fps at minimum. It doesn't have to be a monster. Game examples: Dishonored 2, Prey, DOOM, Wolfenstein 2, Nier Automata.

I mainly use it for games. I don't use any demanding software.

My setup? Single screen at 1080p with 60hz. This will not change.

My own thoughts! From what I can tell, not much as happened on the market apart from GPU. My specs should be fine otherwise. I'm not entirely sure, however, if a GTX 1060 or 1070 is preferred. Personally, I believe a 1060 should be fine for another ~5 years considering my setup and the fact I won't pursue 1440p etc. Yet, I want to hear others' thoughts on this matter.

Similarly, I'd like advice as what brand to go with. ASUS, MSI or something else?
What's the main differences and what do I look for in cards? Similarly, 6GB should be better than 3GB, right? Heck, even then there's other things like Dual or Strix Gaming when it comes to ASUS...

I read an article lately that summarised the different ways that Microsoft deals with people who want to move over their Windows regos. I can't find it now but the crux of it was that you should be okay. MS don't want to penalise people for buying a new mobo. They're apparently quite helpful over the phone and won't give you a hard time for no reason.

Seems like I missed ACER did a refresh of the Z35, its called the Z35p and it has some new features. For one, it is a 3440x1440, AMVA+ Panel w/ 100hz, overclockable upto 120hz. Displayport 1.2 and HDMI 1.4. I believe this is the only monitor with this list of specfications. I haven't seen any reviews yet but it look promising.

If you're only gaming then the 7700k is still the best choice. The additional 4 threads of the 7700k are worth it over the 7600k. I'm unsure of what you mean by 6900's though?

Yes the stock fans are very noisy at full but ypu dont have to run them at 100. The quiet setting will work fine.

That said, upgrading to noctuas will definitely help with noise and probably drop temps a degree or two.

If you mean your moving your windows install to a new drive, then no it will automatically reactivate, since you didn't change your motherboard.

Theoretically you don't need to reinstall windows 10. It should be able to adapt and deactivate old and install new drivers. Practically: Yeah a fresh install is recommended and better. There is also a chance of your windows working out of the box, if your license is connected to your Microsoft account.

People are grabbing AMD cards for Ethereum mining. It's the hot new cryptocurrency that skyrocketted in value the last few months and AMD 470/570 and 480/580 are very efficient about mining it. However, a change in algorithms will eventually make the 4 GB AMD cards obsolete - if that happens, expect a ton to pop up on Ebay and to be able to find them in stores again lol (and a more drastic change could occur in November to make GPU mining of ethereum obsolete). The 1080/ 1080 Ti aren't that great at Ethereum mining because the algorithm is designed with GDDR5 in mind when using the GPU, while those cards use GDDR5X and are better at mining other cryptocurrencies.

I got the TP-Link TL-WA850RE for about 20 €. That should be the ballpark, but whatever you buy, make sure it also acts as an ethernet router since that avoids the issue with bad Wifi adapters and keeps your ping low.

I forgot to mention though that I only have a 30 MBit cable connection, so I don't know whether it will also deliver if you have a much faster fibre connection. Maybe you can buy one from Amazon and send it back if you're not satisfied.

It's useful to an extent. But it's ultimately an artificial test that won't necessarily reflect actual gaming performance. When I had corrupt CPU drivers which were crippling my performance in games, the 3Dmark tests ran just fine.
