gaf, it's time for me to get a new pc.
i'll be using it mostly for programming and dev-work.
som 3d stuff and video/image editing.
occasional gaming.
I want intel+nvidia for dev/programming reasons.
I want to have one 120+hz monitor, and one 60. how is it to work with multiple monitors with different refresh rates? anything I need to think about?
Around $1500 (+ monitors)would be ideal. Any cpu/gpu/ssd recommendations?
1.)Modern GPUs can easily handle two displays with different refresh rates simultaneously. Everything should be plug and play.
2.) You want a PC that has to handle programming, software development, heavy video and image editing, has to be a capable 120 fps gaming machine, has reliable SSDs, a lot of storage and is Intel/Nvidia based...
My first answer would be: Get a x299 platform based skylake-x build with 32 GB of Ram, at least a GTX 1080 and Samsung Pro SSDs. But that's more like $2500...
So we have to cut things down, but that's hard to do without knowing what you really need or prioritize.
- If you need to move or edit very large files I'd definitely consider a modern NVMe drive with at least 500GB. Something like a samsung 960Evo/Pro 500GB, a Toshiba OCZ RD400 512GB, a Corsair Force Series MP500 480GB or a Plextor M8Pe.
-If you need larger SSDs instead of very fast ones (sata 3 instead of nvme) get something like a samsung 850 Pro/Evo, OCZ VX500, Crucial MX300 or a Mushkin Reactor.
-As a motherboard the x299 Platform is to expansive, because the GPU will eat up too much of your budget. This makes the z270 or h270 platform your ideal choice. Get something with NVMe M.2 slots and full speed USB 3.1 support in case you wish to use usb 3.1 drives in the future.
- CPU wise the 7700k is your choice for z270. I wouldn't spend money on an expansive cpu cooler in your case though. Something like the cryorig H7 is enough.
*If you want to save some money for other parts a good h270 board, an i7 7700 non k and the stock cooler will also be fine... you can save ~$100 this way
-You'll probably have many programs open at once and load large videos and images. I'd definitely go for 32GB of Ram because of that. Get 2133 or 2400 MHz ddr4 to save some bugs for other components.
*especially if you go for a h270 MB
-GPU is a hard choice because of your 120fps target. Get at least a 1070 if you plan to get a fullHD 120Hz screen (and push for 120fps). Get whatever is cheap.
-PSU... 550W-600W. Whatever fits your budget.
-Case... whatever is left of your budget.
