Hey Boys,

can you give me feedback on this setup? Im thinking about building a new pc

Samsung SSD 990 PRO 2TB, M.2

Intel Core i9-13900K, 8C+16c/32T, 3.00-5.80GHz

G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB DIMM Kit 32GB, DDR5-6000, CL40-40-40-96, on-die ECC

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4090 Windforce 24G, 24GB GDDR6X

GIGABYTE Z790 AORUS Elite AX

Thermaltake ToughPower GF3 1000W ATX 3.0

Wow, envious. If you are spending that kind of money then get the trident CL30/32 ram instead. Rest looks top notch.

Personally I prefer Corsair or Seasonic for PSU's
I'd avoid the Samsung 990 Pro due to the issues they were having and I'd choose the WD SN850X personally
Otherwise looks good, what are you using for cooling?

Noctua NH-D15S chromax.black CPU Cooler

Cooler Master MasterCase H500M as a Case

thx for the advise! I will compare ur suggestions with my setup.

Thx bro! Its around 3800€ without shipping. I think its is money worth.
Arent the 30/32s for AMD?

$41 dollar champ but didn't review the successor - Phantom Spirit 120. Which beats the latter handily at basically the same price. Still tops everything including the Noctua NH-D15 in thermals and acoustics which is surprising.

Thats fine but stay away from the 990. id also get memory with better timings.

I need a new storage solution. I have a couple TB on my desktop right now, but I'm thinking of buying 2x at least 8TB, but possible 16 TB or whatever, the second for pure purposes of redundant backup. I'm going to be putting -everything- on here, photo backups, video, old game installs, etc, so I just don't want to feel pressure for space anymore which is why I'm aiming for so large.

A friend recommended the DiskStation with a couple of bays - would it be just as fine honestly to just run my old Desktop and install two internal HDDs into it on the network? What am I really getting from the DiskStation that isn't available on an old desktop? Any particular brand I should avoid on HDD? Was thinking of just going with the usual suspects, WD, Seagate, whatever once a deal pops up on Slickdeals or something. I figure for the cost savings of the DiskStation I could just get more space, or spend less money.

I'm sure some nerd on internet would for sure find a way to make everything work on an old desktop with a " Ackchyually", but i picked a Synology diskstation for my solution and couldn't be happier. PC detects the NAS drive for Steam/Xbox stored games (i keep only the immediate games i play on local SSD), it syncs my iphone to download photos directly to it, the backup system is a no brainer and Synology's own raid system is top tier.

I'm sure it can be done on desktop... but probably would have paid as much for the NAS as i would've just for my own goddamn time and probably would not be anywhere close, like the iPhone photo automatic transfers.

There are free NAS software programs or OS out there, but I don't know anything past that they exist. It is possible to make your own from an old desktop. I made one myself from an OS called Vortexbox, but I stopped bothering with it a long time ago. Not sure that software exists anymore.

Everyone has their own preferences on HDD brands. I won't use WD because every single drive I ever bought, years apart, failed. Seagate has served me well. But I know people have the exact opposite experience.

Amd benefits more indeed. There is some improvement with intel as well however and it might be more as time goes on.
On the amd note however, since you are going ddr5 anyway, wouldnt you want to go with amd/am5 instead? Current intel socket wont be compatible with 14 series cpus anymore. While am5 is going to be supported for several years still. 7800x3d is assumed to be a banger, not far until we find out.

I hate asking stupid questions but I do love being able to lean on people here

Riding to Microcenter with a friend as he is going to try and build his first PC (while I help after I have built a few) but he is centering his rig around the regular 5800X cpu and a 4080

My question is he bottlenecking the 4080 very much with that CPU running 4k 120 as he is hooking up to an LG C2

He has been playing on a 2080 so regardless is a huge upgrade for him I just want to make sure he isn't massively holding his GPU back

Im running that set up with a 4090, 5800x and LGC2, hell get 120fps fine on most games.

Thank you.

Most quick searches I have found shows its still a great CPU

I ended up asking for not much reason as I texted a bit ago asking when he wants to go and he just ordered a Thermaltake prebuilt from Best Buy with that combo 5800x 4080 for $2300

Thanks again though

A 5800X is fine. It ain’t awful like the dude still using an X58 chipset!

at 4K you're going to more GPU limited i think. a 5800X should not cause any problems.

i upgraded from a 2080 to a 4080 but i only play at 1440p with 144hz and i have a 9900k. it's a huge upgrade but i feel like my GPU is being held back by the CPU in some games. i'm planning on upgrading my CPU as soon as i can find a 7950X3D in stock. i won't be upgrading just for games or i'd have went with the 7800X3D.

Yeah at 4K you're going to be GPU bound, even with a 4090. If your friend wanted to save even more, look into a 5700X which is essentially the same CPU performance wise but much more efficient and way easier to cool. Probably the best value CPU you can get for gaming rn.

I just wanted to make sure he wasn't messing up building a new system based on that CPU but since he ordered a prebuilt it saves me having to watch over him :)

4. A 5800X/X3D isn't a bad idea at all, but you're only using 3200 ram and Ryzen needs 3600 (CL 16) to really shine. So remember that if you snag a 5800X or X3D.

This isn't true with the 5800x3d.

rofif rofif youre good to go for the 5800x3d with your current 3200 ram.

Sigh I have created a monster

Buddy asks me if a 7700x cpu with 32GB 5200 mhz DDR5 ram and same 4080 would beat the 5800x with 32GB 3600 mhz DDR4 and would it be worth an extra $200 for the newer system

We go back and forth and I tell him its likely a little better so now he orders the new one as well and wants help testing both systems

Its always why I hated building PCs for friends you were tech support for life :)

I was just about to post this. There is no reason to buy a Noctua cooler anymore [unfortunately, they have been great].

These Thermalright coolers are currently unbeatable. Esp the newer Phantom Spirit 120 SE. It goes for under 45 euros in Europe.

Problem with Noctua is that they take forever to release anything. Their next gen NH-D15 is in development hell and has been mia what seems like forever. And is only going to release later this year. Same with their 140mm. To be fair to them the NH-D15 has been pretty much the king of air coolers since it released back in 2014. And their support is great with free brackets upgrades.

Times have changed though and with newer tech, heatpipes (what I'm guessing is attributing to TR's performance) and new fans, other competitors like Thermalright, Deepcool etc can have caught up and even surpassed them. And is even worse since Noctua have risen the prices quite dramatically this past year, killing their value. Like for the same price you can get an equivalent or better Thermalright cooler and pocket $65-70 towards other components, drinks or whatever.

And yeah the PS120 SE is damn good. I have one on my 5800X3D. Pretty overkill for my use but it was 'cheap' and I can always reuse for AM5 and maybe even AM6 should the mounting brackets stays the same.

Yap - ive already decided to get it instead of using my existing D14 for my AM5 build [ whenever that happens ]

Lol. The friend doesnt know but he really wants to hit that 6000mhz on ram, cl30/32 ideally. The difference is actually significant.

He keeps sending me texts of different systems and it had quieted down but I will tell him this and it will start his search again.

He set himself a $2500 ish cap but is starting to approach the $3k barrier now, this might send him over :)

I just built a 7700x system. It is a beast for the price. FYI, you can thermal limit it instead of wattage limit it. I limited mine to 70c and did -30 on all cores (might of got a lucky bin for that) and get better cinibench scores than stock.

With the new x3d chips, I think I'm one step closer in getting a new build, first time since 2011. Does this build look fine? Or should I swap anything?

Monitor: 4k Resolution, not always looking to play at native resolution
Use cases: Gaming, browsing, pirating, general workhorse PC for the house that I'm hoping will last 10 years and more
  • Case: Fractal North
  • CPU: Ryzen 7900x3d
  • CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12A 2x120mm Heatsink
  • MOBO: Asus ROG Strix X670E-E Motherboard
  • Ram: 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR5 6000Mhz
  • 4TB WD Black NVMe PCIe 4.0
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 4080 -or- 4070ti
  • PSU: 1000watt Corsair

If only for gaming and light use I'd wait a few weeks for the 7800X3D.

Likely to be as fast if not slightly faster at gaming with no tweaking required. Plus 6 cores on the 7900X3D with V-Cache vs 8 with the 7800X3D.

Thanks Hinch! Pretty much set on the 7800x3d then. Apart from the CPU, does the rest of the build look okay? Would you change anything apart from the CPU?

You're welcome. For the RAM, try get as low latency (CL30 optimal) as you can on that 6000Mhz set otherwise looks good.

Its not much difference (maybe upto 1-2%) but if you're min/maxing performance, something to consider.

Cooler wise, if not fussed on brand or aesthetics.. I'd recommend the Thermalright Phantom Spirit SE or PS120 SE which can be found on Amazon, for around $40-45. Which should easily top the U12A and even NH-D15 in cooling/acoustics. Could even buy 1-2 Noctua NF A12x25 or Phantek's T30 120mm fans for the PS120 and have money spare. Won't be a massive difference in thermals from the U12A, but thought that might be worth throwing in there. Review found on Reddit on a chinese version of Youtube here for reference.

In nvcp, I've been forcing x16 anisotropic filtering for good 20 years now.
And vsync to on (since it's better to have this on with gsync).
In games I always turn off vsync to make sure games use nvcp setting.

Is the x16af still valid? I've seen some comments saying that it is bandwidth intensive and can cause issues and so on. Anyone experienced issues with global af x16 ?

I have never ever had the AF setting effect performance in anyway. Been on PC since 2001. Not sure where you heard it was bandwidth intensive

Probably on console lol

They still use 4x on consoles. I think it could be because consoles have shared ram bandwidth between the cpu and gpu whereas pc gpus have dedicated ram bandwidth.

The 4090 is the real deal.

I just wanted to test it out in WoW ( I know). With my 5850 w/ my eVGA 3090 FTW3 OC I was getting maybe 30-40 FPS in the major city (where everyone hangs out) and my graphics setting was set at 6 and I even lowered some other options. I would get dips like to 15FPS too. Playing on 4k too.

With my new PC 13900k w/ ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC and graphics set to max I getting a steady 100FPS in heavy traffic areas with it dipping it to the mid 70s.

WoW is an old game so it's no optimized like newer games, so gains like this are ****ing huge and I can actually play on my 48" C1 OLED 4k with feeling like a slide show in raids and chit.

Finally caved in and got myself a 4090.. Been waiting forever because reports of many 4090s having coil whine issues (I'm sure some is exaggerated, but it's enough for me to be triggered due to past bad experience). Ended up with a Gigabyte 4090 Gaming OC, much because of this video (good balance between specs (VRM, power limit etc) and price):

4K VR in MS Flight Simulator and DCS with this beast is an experience like no other.

..And of course no coil whine whatsoever (that I can hear anyway).

Hey y'all. I want to build a new PC that will play the Resident Evil 4 remake. I found some recommended requirements pasted below. I mean, it's nothing crazy. And my budget is probably higher than what's needed in order to run this game. So what's the sweetspot right now in terms of price/performance? I haven't built a PC since like 5 years ago so I'm totally out of the loop in terms of GPUs, CPUs, current chipset, etc.

Also any recommendations for a mobo/case combo that could be decently portable? (i.e. pack it in a checked luggage for international flights)

Resident Evil 4 Remake Recommended Requirements:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 / Intel Core i7 8700
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • VIDEO CARD: AMD Radeon RX 5700 / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
  • DEDICATED VIDEO RAM: 8192 MB
  • PIXEL SHADER: 5.1
  • VERTEX SHADER: 5.1
  • OS: Windows 10 (64 bit)

Or go even further and wait for the 7800X3D CPU and put the savings towards the 4090. It doesn't appear the PC will be a workstation, so a 7900X3D will still be overkill. Put that buck fiddy savings towards the 4090.
Agreed. The 4080 has to be the worst value in graphics card history. If you're gonna spend $1300 on a GPU, you might as well spend an extra $300 and get much better performance. It's criminal how gimped the 4080 is compared to the 4090.

I think he's being a little contrarian there. Server/HEDT chips from Intel have trailed their consumer counterparts by a gen for over a decade now.

Not to mention just a month ago he was slamming AMD on dropping the ball on Threadripper and praising Intel's new W series, even though that too is on last year's Golden Cove (12 series).
