I really miss games like MGS (V)

It's almost 10 years old, and it just made me think about how lucky we were to be able to experience these games.

Many people were disappointed with the story (of V), but honestly, the world-building and gameplay of MGS was always the coolest part.
A strange mix of sci-fi and realism, combined with the attention to detail that usually only japanese devs are capable of.
All the incredible gameplay details, but also meticulous matching between world-building, story and gameplay that almost no other games can match.

There is really no point with this thread, just wanted to pay my respects to these incredible works of art.

I would ask for recommendations to similar games with the same level of quality and genius, but I don't think they exist.

Nothing to worry about. The best one is getting a perfect remake that's going to be up there with Resident Evil (Gamecube) as one of the greatest remakes of all time (calling it now, like I called SH2 being GOTY after announcement).

You miss an incomplete and hastily finished game?
While this is true it was still better than the majority of games.

If this game was made by R* it would have been given an extra year in the oven to properly pad out chapter 2 with new missions, make the chapter 3 epilogue and give it proper variations for the side missions. Not 10 side quests that you basically repeat 10 times each.

It could have been up there with RDR2 if it got this.

MGSV has some problem and is very different from previous MGS games.
I couldn't get into it the first time.

Then tried again years later and loved it. Gameplay is godlike.
Story is questionable and not a fan of the storytelling.

But still some very good moment. That mission 43 has left a mark on me. I was literally begging for it to stop.

I've never liked Kojima gameplay outside the OG Metal Gear on NES but I recognize the man as one of the industry legends, and there are clearly people that love his work. I would like to see Splinter Cell make a comeback though....

Retarded takes didn't take long, GAF is my personal amusement park đź‘Ś

Quite possibly the best gameplay in any open-world ever and I don't say that lightly. Story was solid too despite being "incomplete" touching on themes ranging from language and memetics to revenge and ultimately peace. The level of detail Kojima puts into his games is second to none, it's not even something that is debatable. Funny this thread comes along now, was recently reminiscing about MGSV and went down a fresh rabbit hole on YT. This vid is a great example of how crazy you can get with it's mechanics:

While this vid is a great example of how deep the well goes with it's secrets/attention to deatail:

Wish I could recommend something comparable, but it doesn't exist, let's wait for Physint (and obviously Death Stranding 2 but the gameplay systems are wildly different). MGS Delta looking great too!

I don't miss The Phantom Pain. I miss Kojima doing games i love. DS is not my thing.

V's fluidity of the gameplay is unbelievable. Everything else is questionable.

Story is absolute garbage. Grind and repetition is even worse than in Peace Walker.

even the gameplay?
Aside from some real rare exceptions (witcher 3 for example) I despise open world games ... specially when shoehorned into series I love in later sequels (mgs to mgs5 ... dark souls to elden ring ... are some examples).

But all in all I just hated the overall change in MGS5 from the old formula. Story didnt even matter since I was unable to progress the game. First time I was put on a horse and had to ride to some distant place for no reason whatsoever I said fuck it and never looked back.

I bought Metal Gear Solid V on every platform I’ve had over the years—first on PS3, then on PC, and finally on PS4. This game has an incomplete storyline with parts that seem poorly put together; that much is clear. But Phantom Pain has the best intro I’ve ever seen in a game, and the gameplay and atmosphere are so unique that they become addictive.

My biggest issue is the lack of great boss fights like the franchise has always had. And yes, I miss that too.

I loved the subversive and easily predicted by fans narrative and the base building element but the game was clearly unfinished. Running around an African Plain where there's like one tree and you might crash into a Zebra.

Oof. That will be the first mission then, where you need to save an old ally? Sorry to hear that

People in here are mental. MGSV is like a top all time game, best third person shooting mechanics and has rarely been topped. A highly reactive open sandbox.

Yeah the story sucked, the last 3rd of the campaign is fucked, but that's all from corporate meddling.

The game itself as in pressing the buttons and doing the things is unrivaled still to this day. Go play star wars Outlaws and come back and say MGSV is a bad game 🤣

Then there was the fox engine, what a thing of beauty, even today it still holds up and at a rock solid 60fps.

Imagine if Konami weren't dipshits and kojipro and co got to expand the tech and continue their plans.

Fantastic game.
From Camp Omega opening to the Truth revelation, a classic Kojoma mind fuck, with exceptionally well developed themes and characters, and tons of sublte hints and foreshadowings.
By far the best acting in the series too, in both cutscenes and tapes. Sets like Camp Omega intro, Motherbase fall, the Hospital escape, Shining lights, Paz memento, Huey exile, Truth, etc absolutely top tier in all aspects.
Gameplay was of course, sublime, though i was not the biggest fan of the episodic structure.

One big negative though: the free form nature of the game made it possible to miss a lot of great story/characterisation moments.

I cant wait for MGS Delta, but im itching for a new stealth game.

I've given up on a new Splinter Cell, i'd even be worried with a remake given Ubisoft's track record over the last 10 years.

Would love a new dev to bring this type of game to the market now, but i dont think there will be.

The game needed more quiet like moments where it would funnel you through a one way tunnel and diagetically put you into a setpiece.

My biggest gripe too would be the mission based, episodic structure.

I would have preferred a Rockstar approach where you were always in the open world and there's just a marker for the mission start.

Honestly its such a minor gripe though.

My method was always do all available side quests then pop the mission from the Idroid, finish, hit mother base then return to open world for side quests/exploration

Worst MGS doesn’t mean it’s a bad game. It is the worst MGS.

People are saying bad.

Ah yes, empty deserts with a few generic military bases. Peak Kojima right here. The game outside of stealth mechanics(which were amazing) was just dog shit.
To each their own... but MGSV was pure dogshit .... like radioactive dogshit
Dog shit i wouldn't say means "worst mgs"

It's also not the worst mgs. If you guys think mgs5 is unfinished you should plays mgs4. As much as I love that game, it's barely put together.

And when you research why you realise it's a very incomplete game, a game that was meant to have full on faction warfare brought down to small linear segments

Again I love mgs4 but it's definitely the biggest missed opportunity of the franchise

Yeah maybe. It was definitely weaker gameplay wise than the previous two it seemed. But it went to a more linear gameplay loop. But by the time we got to 4 a lot of us just wanted to see it finish out story wise. Which they delivered on regardless if you liked the story they at least finished it out. MGS5 was focused on the gameplay and the story was disappointing, even if it had more time to bake I don’t know if it would have been a worthwhile story in the series. It was all kind of pointless. MGS4 tied up the series between solid and big boss. Not sure if we needed the side episode that really amounted to nothing.

If Konami really wanted to explore something new but familiar in the Solid cannon they should revisit the actual first 8-bit metal gear games in some form. It would at least provide some new stuff while having updated mechanics, give them some liberties to flush out some new bosses and spaces while sticking to the concept of the originals loosely.

Is the worst mgs by a mile .... and its not even close... coudnt even get to the half of it ... its the only open world mgs and it was awful ... In fact I hardly consider MGS5 an mgs game as much as FF16 is an FF game. Mgs5 was the beginning of kojima crazy era culminating with the now batshit crazy mail man simulator.

Mgs4 as much as people didnt like it (and I love it) still feel like an proper mgs game.

It was not exactly the first mission but as soon as the open world tropes began to appear I noped out ... cant speak for everybody but I buy sequels to games I love to continue to have the same experience even if slightly different... and MGS 1 trough 4 provided just that... mgs5 feels and plays like a completely different game using the same name. Is like playing the classic turn based final fantasys and than being introduced to FF16 ... for me it felt the same.

But again it didnt help being open world... I usually really dont like open world dynamics aside from some rpgs.

So a more right opinion from me would be mgs5 is an dogshit mgs game... but maybe is an excellent open world stealth game .. it was just not my thing.
