I really think Overwatch deserves GoTY over Uncharted 4. It's historically unlikely.

Doom is my current GOTY and I suspect I'll prefer the last guardian and FFXV to Overwatch. I can't stand the artstyle Blizzard uses for their last few games.

Tough to say what my GOTY is his year. IMO Uncharted 4 ia a beautiful game and has awesome refined gameplay BUT imo it has pne of the weakest campaigns in the series. I was forcing myself to beat it towards the end.

Overwatch imo is a great game and deserves a lot of awards..it's just a blast to play. I wouldn't mind if it won't GOTY.

Currently playing through TF2 though and the campaign is pretty awesome while the multi is really fun too.

GOTY is and always will be personal choice

I don't think there should be one unamimous game of the year. Some people might have liked Uncharted (or something else) more than Overwatch, and that's okay.

You can say this about every single "X of the year" award, and yet we still have them for literally every industry.

There were a bunch of great games this year though.

I don't remember GTA V being hated on much.

It definitely got it's fair share of hate, usually about the heist or GTA Online though, the main complaint about the SP was about how crap the story was or that the controls weren't the best. It also had TLoU and Bioshock Infinit to spread the hate out.

I always wondered why the obsession with the game of the year awards... I mean eventually years pass and when you think of old games you never think about that game that won every goty awards, you also think about other good games that were released that year.

I feel like some people in this gaming board cant sleep if their favorite game didnt win a Goty award.

Threads like this are always random, because the OP says that "Game X deserves to win", when the thread eventually turns into "No game Y is the Goty this year".

After GTAIV, GTAV was a golden flawless child, it did a lot of things bad and screwed up but it wasn't GTAIV and I was thankful for that. I don't understand how people fell in love with it's online enough to spend tons of money, making them focus on that mode so much. I thought people would get fed up with Rockstar nerfing money making methods (that weren't exploits, just making it more tedious to farm like removing the [replay mission] button after a completed mission so you'd have to travel all the way back.

Anyway, Uncharted 4 and Overwatch will win GOTY. Doom, Barbie Horse Ride, and so many games will also win.

Overwatch is good but it doesn't come close to touching the sense of scale and adventure Uncharted 4 presents. U4 should win and hopefully it will.

It's a great game but with the shitty unlock system, especially for special holidays/events, barebones ass content, slow as fuck updates- I highly disagree.

Yeah, Uncharted 4 is a tech showcase, but a boring game, and equal last with U1 for me. It's hard to say what "deserves" GOTY, but I can point to some games that don't. Uncharted 4 is top of the list. Boring is the biggest sin a game can commit.

Depends how seriously you take them.

My view is it's a fun restrospective of the year that gives people an opportunity to reflect and discuss what they enjoyed the most over the last year. Provides some of the best podcast material of the year too (thank you Giant Bomb)

I can't ever imagine getting angry over it or anything. I don't think I've ever matched up with the GAF GOTY.

Overwatch is good but it doesn't come close to touching the sense of scale and adventure Uncharted 4 presents.

Why should it have to? Why are scale and adventure the primary criteria for determining what deserves a GOTY award? Uncharted 4 doesn't have the strategic teamplay of Overwatch. It doesn't have the variety of character design that spawned one of the largest fan creation communities ever. Why don't these things matter?

Why just over Uncharted 4? Does it not deserve to be "GOTY" over any of the other great games that came out this year or something? I'm confused.

Thread title comes across as needlessly baiting.

Underrated how? Because a few people dislike it and even fewer shipost incoherently about it?

Utter bollocks. Outside of the OT, I can't think of a single UC4 thread (Eg: See the TGA thread from a couple of days back for a recent example) I've read on here that isn't quickly overtaken by thinly veiled bitterness at the game's success and driveby shitposting and other posters trying to excuse such behaviour as being the fault of fans of the series somehow...

the amount of sensitivity and nonsensical defensiveness of its main fanbase make it a fun game to mock, but I fail to see anyway how a 93 metacritiqued and runaway favorite for the Pope Awards is anything close to underrated.

... oh... never mind then.

"It's a shame that dozens of people who write about video games will not all vote for my favorite game."

I honestly don't see what's sad about it. What is different about the world whether or not Overwatch wins a goty award more or less than it's bound to in 2016? It's received lots of recognition so far from sheer volume of sales, the tons of money being dumped into its gatchapon machine, and nonstop coverage from sites thanks to Blizzard's track record of continuous marketing and engagement. So if the year ends without a unanimous pile of GOTY awards that's sad how? Because multiplayer-only games deserve better? Why? Are they underappreciated? In what way?

This is exactly how I felt.

Uncharted 4 fixed all my issues with the first 3 games.

- Tighter controls
- Best gunplay in the series
- Less linearity

The pacing was just bad. The game just overstayed its welcome and was too quick to slow you down. Whether it was for yet ANOTHER cut scene or slow walking talking segment.

I bought it launch day and only finally forced myself to finish it this month. Such a slog. Doing my collectible clean up now before taking on Crushing

Hey, Rocket League won a few GOTY awards last year. Ya never know!
EDIT: The real winner should be Hitman. You know this to be true.

I enjoyed tf2 more than I do overwatch. Only reason I stopped was because it was had to populate the server I played on. Skill cap was much higher and certain things really annoy me in overwatch such as having to reload a full clip if you hit reload for some of the weapons vs some of the weapons in tf2. Also there still aren't enough maps in my opinion.

DOOM is a really good game, but only 50% of it (the Single Player), well I believe that 100% of Overwatch is a good game. I still think, for me, it will probably be Rise of the Tomn Raider that ends up as my personal GOTY, but I'd put Overwatch above Doom and maybe Uncharted as well...it's gonna be tough.

I hope Overwatch isn't going to win GOTY as it's arguably not even in the top three first person shooters; Doom, Titanfall 2, and Battlefield 1 are great ... Overwatch is fun in small blasts but gets old fast and there's no single player to break up the tedium. Blizzard could build on it though much like Respawn did with Titanfall to Titanfall 2 and then they have a chance.

Hmmm Street Fighter V is the best, but Overwatch is OK too.

To say a multiplayer game deserves GOTY over a single player game is really bizarre to me... How exactly are you comparing and contrasting these games in a meaningful way?

Overwatch is a fan favourite of lots of press, I would say it has a really good chance to win something, somewhere.

nope. Write in vote for Dark Souls 3. Golden joystick got it right.

I'd vote for dark souls 3 over uncharted if that makes you feel better. Overwatch was just more fun to me. Dark souls 3 was def up there for me but I only played through once. Overwatch is the first game since rocket league to take over my entire existence.

That's nice but it really is the killer game this and next coming years. See the playerbase too.

Overwatch and Doom deserve it this year. Uncharted 4 was really disappointing.
To you it was....But I could not be more turned off by the gorefest that is Doom and Overwatch is great, but like SFV, won't be appreciated by many that don't put the time in. Even then, I enjoyed the shorter experience of UC4 more because it resonated long after I played it.

Where big bombastic set pieces and one liners were replaced with more drama oriented story telling and climbing is some kinda travesty all of sudden on GAF and UC2 is heralded as this masterpiece.

I liked UC2 better than UC4 btw, but they are much closer than some are giving credit to. I personally didn't find any of UC4 boring, was really extremely surprised by some of the comments on the game from GAF, like not everything has to be shooting shooting shooting, and since I played on hard from the jump, the breaks from shooting were refreshing and I appreciate exploring and jumping on walls.

Also, why is this thread titled highlighting Uncharted instead of just saying Overwatch should be GOTY?

Damn...everyone needs their opinion validated with like-minded people...

Firewatch sucks too I guess? I dunno, I think these things are brilliant, my wife watched me play through all of both of those games without skipping a beat.

Every thread has its share of driveby annoyances, but UC4 is partially more divisive because of how needlessly defensive some of the fanbase is. More than people just being jealous of its success, I think the "hate" on UC4 is amped up by a fanbase that largely treats like shitposting anything other than calling it a masterpiece.

There's some low quality drivel spilled about it though, sure, but if you think that the defensive fans don't work like a magnet for that stuff well then you just don't know how humans work on this regard.

Wait, is U4 in the running? Pretty much everyone I know who played it found it underwhelming, which is the reason I've been waiting for it to hit a sweet spot price-wise before getting it. Maybe I'm just in a bubble.

I've heard more praise for Doom, which I haven't beaten yet so can't comment on.

I can agree here, and I think it's because of why it's divisive. Uncharted 4, fairly unanimously, is regarded as the best playing Uncharted. Certainly has the best graphics of the series, but there's simply a group of gamers that loved the slower paced build up, walking/talking segments, and had a great time with the pacing, while others felt it just wasn't exciting enough.

GAF loves Bloodborne, it's exclusive, but I just don't remember it being this much back n forth over it's greatness. I personally do find it weird though, as I play SFV at a competent level, and can certainly appreciated strong gameplay appeal. I just did not at all find climbing beautiful vistas, or talking to Sam boring and found each shooting segment to be like a mini movie. It's my favorite Uncharted, maybe the best one, I just felt UC2 had somewhat better pacing.

It sounds like Overwatch did just win game of the year. It actually won the only relevant game of the year, which is your own.

Why the fuck would you care what some random company thinks is game of the year? Why care what some random site or forum thinks? It is completely irrelevant and them spending more money on it than you in no way makes it magically more legit.

if more people reasoned like you, these debates would never be this heated. it's the "matter of fact" attitude of the people that didn't like the pacing like "walking simulator" jokes or "boring as hell for 3/4 of the game" that offends those that do.

I think Doom is an absolute joke of a game. I don't care about its mechanics at all because it glorifies violence and blood all over the screen which i just find completely off putting and juvenile. But I can appreciate I'm biased, and understand there's solid mechanics underneath something I find unappealing. I just have to lol at these walking simulator jokes like "so what?" What in the world is wrong with a video-game trying to tell a story?

I wonder how many people saying overwatch have played team fortress? I've been playing team fortress since the nineties and I look at overwatch and think it's cool but certainly not revolutionary or GOTY material. I see a very polished game with additional classes lacking maps and game modes. I would argue focus from blizzard needs to be on maps and modes as their are too many classes already. Support has been very poor IMO for the amount of money it's likely generated through sales and crates when you look at launch content.

Being a former Team Fortress fan is why Overwatch is my GOTY. It's Team Fortress 2 with all the worst excesses of what it became excised, and an update style that somewhat insulates it against that happening again (even if I acknowledge there's still a chance).

It'll be there but I'm not sure if Uncharted 4 will even make my top five. As someone who wanted less combat, I also wanted more involved gameplay in-between to make the exploration more interesting. Uncharted 4 doesn't do that, it just adds more no-skill climbing and forced walking stuff than ever. As an interlude between shooting stuff those things work without depth, but it kind of falls apart when they are supposed to prop up the game by themselves. It sticks out even more when the base mechanics and what combat there is is the best in the series.
