I really think Overwatch deserves GoTY over Uncharted 4. It's historically unlikely.

Uncharted 4 is one of the best games of the generation, of course it deserves to win over a hero shooter.

Also, lol at the OP suggesting that Uncharted 2 and RDR shouldn't have won their respective years .

Its doesn't matter what my skill level is in this game if i don't get to play with other people of or at least around the same skill level. I read the official Blizzard thread on how matching making works for Overwatch and the fact that it's doesn't take into account the player's level is a grave error (imo). A player's level may not be a direct indicator of skill, but it is an indicator of experience. A team with an average team level of 20, shouldn't be going against teams with an average of 80. That's the difference between a team that changes chars to counter the team their playing vs a team of DPS and a Mercy (Me).

That not going to be fun for anyone involved and that has been my experience playing ever since the free weekend ended.

Games of people getting steam rolled shouldn't be the normal. It's not going to teach me to be better, it just discouraging (and boring from the winning side.)

The official Blizzard thread was lying to you then, as far as level goes. I very, very rarely end up playing against people who haven't prestiged at least once when I am in anything but Competitive. Player level isn't the main factor, but I can't help but feel it is a factor. I've played shooters competitively mainly my entire life and I have yet to ever find the "bad matchmaking" argument compelling because it almost always relies on either the matchmaking from the perspective of a single person and the idea that matchmaking either works or it doesn't. I guarantee you have plenty of good games. Probably even the majority. But you don't get pissed off and stop playing because of them. You don't get angry at them. You play, you enjoy yourself, and then completely forget about them out of frustration once you play a bad game.

That might not be exactly what is happening here, but for most cases I find that is how that goes.

OP hit the nail on the head for why we don't see multiplayer games take home major awards except for within their own categories. I think if there ever was a game to change that, Overwatch would be it, but I'd be very surprised if the game took home any GotY awards. Pleasantly surprised, but surprised nonetheless.

I don't think any of us HATE U4.

I've played and enjoyed the whole series, but I understand what I'm getting, and it's not GOTY material. Nobody's saying U4 is garbage, there were just better games released in 2016

I found Overwatch to be meh. I feel like it relies more on its personality than its mechanics - I'd easily consider Rainbow Six: Siege the better shooter.

That said, I found Uncharted 4 to be pretty dull and not all that great of a game, especially compared to something like DOOM.

I'd rather that neither won.

Battlefield 1 is better than Overwatch, so no, it shouldn't win GOTY

And Rainbow Six Siege is better than both. The true GOTY

Amen.

I consider UC2 one of my favourite games of all time but UC4 did not reach those heights at any point. It's really, really good. It's just not TLOU or UC2 good. Better games this year for sure, including OW.

I lost interest in Overwatch pretty quickly in the beginning because there weren't enough different match types.

It was either payload or capture points and everything just felt the same for every match.

Have they added a lot of new modes since then? At least with BF1 you can switch between Rush, Conquest, TDM, Operations (which are awesome), and a couple other game types all with Hardcore versions as well.

I don't think this is caused by matchmaking - it is caused by the game mechanics. Overwatch is, from a strategic point of view, far more complex than most shooters, and far more similar to MOBAs, where you absolutely get these very lopsided games, particularly at low ranks.

Less experienced and less skilled players are very hard to predict. They don't know the best way to play, nor which characters to use when, nor how to deal with other characters. It's not unusual to have a teammate that is completely useless for a round only to become brilliant the next. Hell, I still occasionally have games where I may as well not be there. They can be a useful teammate one round and a complete waste of space the next. I have, quite a few times now, experienced teams that seemed completely useless one round suddenly become incredibly effective the next. I recently played a Competitive Temple of Anubis game which stretched to six rounds because both teams were good at attacking and both teams were bad at defending. This is a bizarre case where we played six lopsided rounds because the teams were actually quite evenly matched.

Could Overwatch's matchmaking be better? I'm sure it could... but in a game like Overwatch it is incredibly hard to predict how good an individual will be, let alone a team, let alone a specific team against another specific team.

Lopsided games can be irritating. Horrible to be on the losing side, sometimes a bit boring to be on the winning side. Yet, I think they are a consequence of what makes Overwatch so exciting. Plus, for what it's worth, you will find that, as you play more, and as you get better, this issue decreases, and you will get more even matches more frequently.

You pointed out a some things that didn't take into account. I guess I'll try to give Overwatch a little more of a chance. It's just having a few days of steam rolls matches back to back to back to back makes me want to throw this game in the trash.

I haven't played many games this year, but surely there has something else that's better than Uncharted 4.

I felt it was one of the more boring entries in the series.

When I played the Overwatch beta it only made me want to pickup TF2 again.

They added a Halloween event which was kinda like a simple horde mode.
For the Olympics they had a Rocket League clone.

Last patch they added 1v1, 3v3 and one other mode I forgot.

Yep, OW does nothing special. It's like no one ever played TF2, Enemy Territory and other Classic Team games.

Doom should win this.

That's weird to me, it's like saying you can't give Bayonetta GOTY because you've already played Devil May Cry. Or like saying DOOM 2016 shouldn't win, because people should have already played DOOM 1993. Or Bloodborne, because they already should have played Demon's Souls, I could go on forever.

Overwhat? Lol

Over Uncharted. That's who.

But what makes Overwatch GOTY worthy?

In what department does it excel except polish?

Doom is my GOTY but I've put a ton of time into Overwatch. It's my 1b.

It has an awful lot of charm in terms of character design and voice acting. The maps are visually appealing and have variable pathing to accommodate characters with vastly different movement methods. It makes the matches feel different when your composition changes.

The game -plays- exceptionally well and each of the characters feels unique. There are options available where you can even succeed based on positioning and teamwork if your aim is dooky. All while being balanced.

I know I'm not saying anything new about the game. All I can say is that I've really enjoyed my time with it and I typically don't enjoy shooters much at all. Its objectively well made and subjectively a supremely fun game. It's not for everyone but I've got a bunch of friends who have been enthralled by it who aren't what you'd expect to be multiplayer gamers.

They are also adding a lot of free content to the game and updating balance fairly regularly. So that's a plus.

Note: I also don't have any problems with how they handle their cosmetics. I have been playing regularly since launch and have either bought anything I wanted with in game currency or gotten out of level up boxes. Even if it wasn't accessible without paying, which they area, I don't really care too much about cosmetics.

I also like how people who like to throw out Uncharted 4 from being a contender only talk about SP and not mention a word about MP.

There really should be "games" of the year....there's just too many good ones to declare just one as the "best".

But for the record, Overwatch gets my vote.

I certainly don't. Overwatch went straight into the shitter once they did the competitive update and has become a significantly worse game since then. It was maybe a solid 7 upon release and is now about a 5 at best.

Overwatch was like it shining star that burned out super quick for me within a couple weeks of release when I realized how shallow of a game it really was. It needs to borrow more ideas from TF2 which was a significantly better game at release than Overwatch is currently.

Uncharted 4 and Overwatch are great games. Both Naughty Dog and Blizzard have done an excellent job working their ass off to make great games for us the consumer. One is not deserving over the other, that's opinion talk. The other nominees are great games as well. The only one I didn't play yet was Titanfall 2. My personal choices I want to win at the game awards is between Uncharted 4 and Inside. But the game awards is not the only award show. I was upset GTA V beat out TLOU at the VGA's but TLOU later swept all the others awards to become the most awarded game in history until the Witcher 3. It's been a great year of games and it's not over yet. (FFXV and TLG)

Uncharted 4 was a decent single player game.

Overwatch is incomparable as a multiplayer shooter, I think I'm addicted.

That said, they are both very different products that I feel shouldn't even be in the same awards category.

Yep, OW does nothing special. It's like no one ever played TF2, Enemy Territory and other Classic Team games.

Doom should win this.

Agreed. However, there are still many ideas Overwatch can take from TF2 to make the game more enjoyable for me. For example, if Overwatch adds a mode with larger team sizes, then I'll jump back in again, as I prefer the chaos of 12v12 or 16v16 that TF2 offers.

ITT: People hate on Uncharted 4 and Overwatch. Mostly Uncharted 4.

I really like both games quite a bit, myself. I'm sure they'll both win a their share of GOTY awards.

Also, Quantum Break for GOTY? Come on, son.

I played overwatch for day (when it was free) and you know what?
It's just another FPS, nothing more, nothing less.

Sure, some characters have different skills and what not, but at the end of the day is all about killing each other.

It bored me to death very, very quickly.

I've stopped playing FPS since the dreamcast era, with unreal tournament.
That was truly the pinnacle for me and it has not improved much since than nor will ever improve.

EDIT: Oh and well, Uncharted 4 is a looker, but it's just another action game
with no real substance to be honest.

I wonder if that says something about the MP.

There is a lot people who only play the series for its single player and never even seriously attempt the MP, which just outright silly.

And UC4 MP has been generally viewed favorably and it is popular (there's also a shit load of competition in this area).

Overwatch should win on mechanics, polish and fun, but GOTY will always be whatever overly cinematic game has the largest budget each year - particularly if a Naughty Dog logo is stamped on the box.

Uncharted 4 deserves to win and it will win. It will win the most awards overall.

GAF consensus has definitely turned on UC4. Noone is saying it's not deserving of awards but just because it's the highest rated game on Metacritic doesn't necessarily mean everyone agrees its the best.

It's also just 1 point ahead of Owlboy, Inside, OW, Rez Infinite and W3: Blood & Wine on OpenCritic. And I don't think you can find me a reviewer who would say that a 1% point difference is a tangible thing.

UC4 was pretty, but boring in a lot of parts. Overall I enjoyed the game but did not feel it was anything special.
Overwatch was fun for a short period of time, but it did not have much content so I got bored quickly.

Bloodborne WAS robbed while this forum rode the Witcher 3 dick train. Fuck that game. Generic and overhyped to the Nth degree. But it's pretty and has boobs so GOTY.

Also, Uncharted 4 was a stunning, incredibly well crafted, beautiful and super boring game.

Never played Overwatch as I'm not a huge fan of multiplayer.

DOOM is my GOTY for 2016 by a country mile.

Does it even really matter that much? I mean I kind of agree, but nobody (hopefully) really takes these kinds of awards THAT seriously. R6 Siege was robbed.

Yeah I have noticed that games journalists and even the general gamer really favor singleplayer games, where the core gameplay isn't even that important. While I do think reviews score MP games decently, I have never agreed with GOTY awards.
