I think years of using the computer mouse has killed my thumb

You know when you have the feeling that you need to "crack your fingers" and you bend them and apply force on your fist with your other hand until the joints go *crack-crack* and you feel relief? I almost never do that, I only feel the need to do it very rarely, which I think is perfectly normal... But recently my right thumb has been needing me to do this almost constantly, and sometimes I'm unable to bend it on my own until I apply external force to it, then a minute or two later I would have to do it again, it's extremely annoying and sometimes freaky... Other times it would make a crack sound every time I bend it... It usually happens when I'm on the computer late at night, it either goes away after a while or I just forget about it... but that's not happening tonight, it's so irritating that I'm unable to work or get my mind off it for a minute... I'm actually using the mouse with my left hand now, is my thumb fucked up beyond repair? :(

What the heck kind of mouse are you using? Hrm... I've never had a problem with any mouse I've used, only with the one my friend has, which is a track ball with some strange thumb and middle finger buttons. Another problemtaic mouse was the hokcey puck mice apple released with those iMacs so many years ago -- otherwise, the mouse is too small for your hand, or your hand is just too large. =P

I don't even know if it's the mouse that caused this, but I can't think of anything else... I always noticed this problem while on the computer, and most of the time I'm just browsing pages and only holding the mouse with my right hand. I don't do much typing, and I haven't been playing video games much the past few years.

It could be the beginning signs of carpal tunnel syndrome or that repetitive stress thingy.

My wrists on my right hand used to be sore from using the mouse all of the time, but I fixed it by getting one of those gel pads.

Give it time to heal, I'm sure it will fix itself.

Wait a minute! I just realized that it might not be the mouse after all, but my cellphone... I write TONS of text messages (SMS) on my tiny Nokia almost every day day (damn having a boyfriend who lives in a different city), and the messages are written entirely using my right thumb... I should probably get myself a phone with a bigger numpad.
