I used to be with "it". Then they changed what "it" was.

Most social media stuff other than Facebook. What's the point in instagram when you can upload pictures to Facebook, or Twitter is basically making a Facebook status in 140 characters.

Then again I don't get why people share/ like/ put stuff on facebook because I only use it for instant chat :P

Edit: And I don't understand the point in tumblr at all. Do you just look at pictures of things you like or something?

There are a bunch of people in this thread saying they're 18 and I feel so far away from that culturally that it makes me feel old.

And I'm only 21. Fuck y'all I remember teenage texting with dumbphones that was a TIME AND PLACE

The people I follow on Twitter have similar interests to me and they mostly just post links to interesting articles. So Twitter is a quick and easy way for me to get the best of the stuff on the internet without having to plow through it all myself.

How come my camera in snapchat doesn't work and just shows a black screen even fter restarting my.phone.and reinstalling snapchat? And what is snapchat for dick/boob pics

You really can't see any use for it? I don't think you've thought much about it.

A newsfeed of information that you have curated through your likes of various bands, websites, shops etc. combined with videos/photos/updates of what your friends/family are doing and the ability to instant message with them, all on a platform that is almost universally common now.

For a lot of people, it distills most of their daily internet experience into one location.

I am my own it, a lot of times I look at what teenagers are doing and shake my head..

and I pray I was never that dumb/foolish or stupid, also I must suppress my urge to slap one should they claim that they are bored..

holy fuck, I never had a device that could do all that growing up... (smartphone)

There's too many damn messaging apps. Kik, whatsapp, snap, all that shit. I guess it's just the new ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo etc. But back then all kids here in Sweden used msn so that wasn't a problem, now everyone is on different shit. Everyone wants to add me on different apps all the time. If using texts/iMessage and facebook messenger makes me old, then so be it.

I'm 25 and I don't get snapchat, wtf is the point in a messaging service that auto deletes messages?

Hell, I've got Facebook and hate it, but it's practically a necessity for someone like me these days; Christ knows why people need about 7 different social networks

A lot of it I think is a broader shift in social structures for "the youths" where verbal communication is largely an annoyance since you can't add emoji (to express your true feels for all to experience) or say it to a hundred different people in different places at the same time (because that many are always hanging on your every word, really!). It makes the impersonal art of texting seem downright intimate by comparison. I also understand the concept of selfies but if you're so busy trying to capture every tiny thing you think would be an interesting memory you're going to miss the actual memorable moments you'll want for life.

At the same time it's the Same Old Shit™. 20 years ago we had essentially the same text services online, the only difference being that always-on connections weren't commonplace yet. Emoji, even! Same ones as today!I had a ridiculously expensive flashy handheld touchscreen thing with "apps" and "syncing" the same as I have now, but serial ports and low available storage kept it incredible simple. Palm IIIxe! I rigged entire laser tag tournaments with that thing's IR port (sorry Canadian team, I refused to let the morons I was babysitting place last because their parents would have killed me and you were the unfortunate victims). Loved it! Was unable to get any slit diffusion patterns to work. Only regret.

Do NOT get snapchat. Surely there are only a limited number of combinations and permutations of dick picks to go around in a single high school for them to all be used up. How do the girls not get sick of this? Also, the hell, even teenage me had some dignity. Guys are so addicted to taking picture of their junk that they even use it as a more traditional message service now? Goddamn.

I'm getting old. Kill me. Just give me VR and I'll say I lasted long enough.

The only thing I don't "get", is youtube vlogers' popularity. I sort of get the appeal of the content even though I'm not in the target audience, but the sheer size of it is what I don't understand. Especially how more talented people are a lot less popular than some other talentless hacks. I guess it has always been like that though, mainstream having to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I "get" most of the trends like social media, sharing, etc.

But like with some people here, I never understood the thrill of "watching someone else play video games". Maybe it's the commentary? But then I feel commentary works if it's well edited rather than while playing (i.e. raw).

I always theorize it's due to the economy nowadays where entertainment is expensive or packaged that people can't experience them on their own. Like, Legos are still expensive so people will settle for a cheaper alternative.

This is one of the more bizarre thought lines I've ever read tbh.So, people are addicted to dick pics because they don't want to move to a completely different messenger for regular chatting? Like, in your head, is Snapchat sullied by the dick or something so that it becomes an unclean client? Should I maintain a separate, dick-free phone also so that my dick taint doesn't seep into the screen?

Dating apps gonna be weird when my oldest kid jumps on them I bet. I got on tinder when it launched but I met my wife on Okcupid before I really started playing around with it.

Kids just don't want their parents knowing the stupid stuff they are communicating. Myself I don't even understand why mobile phones are considered more good that bad. It's like you carry something around on purpose that allows any random asshole to annoy you at any time. Mass insanity.

When people tell me that I should join snapchat, I ask them how many nudes they send per day. The only reason for that app is for teasing during the day, and hopefully nudes at night. I have seen it used for nothing else.

Well I recently turned 29 and I while I'm pretty aware of the new stuff tech-wise I can say that I'm mostly out of touch about things like the music and fashion trends of people who are now in their early 20's.

I was talking with a 22 year old friend the other day when I learned it's weird that I didn't know who One Direction were or that I didn't use instagram, tumblr or take photos/selfies regularly. That stuff kind of freaks me out because it's just 7 years, not even a decade and it already feels like I'm not "in".

The other day like 3-4 years ago?

I use snapchat and I don't think I have ever used it to send/get nudes. I mostly use it with my closest friends (a fraction of the amount of friends from Facebook) and send stupid shit. You send stuff that you don't necessarily want to broadcast to a bigger audience, doesn't mean it has to be nudes. I know that I'm censoring myself on sites like Facebook and Instagram simply because it's more public.

I want to live in the future, so I keep up with the latest tech trends.

Seeing people in here content of being stuck in the 90's is mind boggling to me.

Tech moves SLOWLY, and is ITERATIVE. If you just made a slight effort to pay attention, you won't have the "bwah! how is this- ok I am old now I don't undersant shit" moment.

The Internet.

Especially this invention called Forums.

There's a really odd one called Gaming Age Forums. Not sure if you've seen it?

I don't understand Instagram, Snapchat or Vine. I don't get the point. I also don't understand why people are using hashtags on Facebook. Do they have a purpose? Most of the hashtags are ridiculous too

I was just talking about this the other day, I,m like legit old so I don't get none of this new shit.

What the hell is a Slim Jesus and why can't I understand 75% of rap music?
Selfies? I don't want to know what a mirror feels like.
Social media on a whole? I get staying in touch but this shit seems obsessive.
Loud ass sneakers that cant possibly match any outfit in your closet.?
Kale

I get somethings but most of the time I just climb a tree and wait for someone to call me for dinner.

When you have kids you'll be "with it" again, whether you like it or not. Or rather, you should know what they're up to if you're a good parent.

You're going to have to explain what you are going on about in 90s terms so I can undersant what you mean.

OK gonna expand my answer a bit, because I was tired and just saying "social-media" is a lame way to express it...

Facebook: used to be the cool thing, but not anymore too many moms/angry repubs grandpas/"funny" moms and fucking minions...yeah you can trim your friends list etc etc, but kids don't have time for that. so the Younger set moved to Instagram, post a pic keep it simple, I kinda get that.

kik/line/whatsapp/line and any other messaging service, there just seems to be so many, I get why some international folks use them due to restrictions/lack of service and whatnot, just seem like there is a ton, and you'd think one or two would be the universal choice by now. I do know 4chan uses kik for questionable stuff other than that I've know fuck all bout the rest save for whatasapp because it get's talked about a fair amount.

Snapchat: hot for nudes you don't want people saving, except I think people can still save them?

Tumblr: awesome for porn, kinda pointless for anything else.

Selfie culture: I am not self absorbed so I am not into it, fixing a friends laptop and seeing 100000000000000 pics of his daughter in the same duckface induced pose, idk kids these days, lol

Let's plays/twitch/JSE/Markplier/PewDiePie: Play the fucking game yourself, ugh. I wish I knew spazzy morons would be hot, I can fake that all day long. I can't totally complain as I do enjoy shit like Game Sack, Classic Game room, Classic Gaming Quarterly and the like, maybe it's just the same shit but for old fart like me.

So it's not to say I don't understand it all, I just don't see a need for it all, but if it works for some hell why not.

The one thing I will admit to liking kinda is GMM, except Link, fuck Link...

I don't care that I don't even know what Snapchat really is because I'm not the target generation. Once you aren't a teenager anymore being "with it" is becoming radically less important, which is very nice.

I used to sometimes check out the "Trending" tab on YouTube and thought it was nothing but obnoxious nonsense, but stuff like Ashens, H3H3 or Giant Bomb videos aren't really that far removed from the stuff targeted at teenagers - it's just that the people in the videos I enjoy are generally older and scream less.

And it's funny how the 90s are back in full force. Girls wearing beanies, flanell shirts and these plastic chokers makes me feel like I'm traveling back in time, only that I'm suddenly way too old.
