I was at a Nintendo Switch 2 Experience today. Ask me anything (Mario, Cyberpunk, Donkey Kong, Street Fighter and more)

... the moment he sees 'switch' in the title

Nope — just interested in the perspectives of the OP, not a half dozen posts written like a 4 year old, meant to convince everyone that the Switch 2 is without fault.

Glad to see you're on the same page with GigaBowser. Super cool.

went to event pal talked to staff play all games

Don't give a shit. You've already made your position very clear — the sorta position where digital foundry is both Mao Zedong and Gandhi depending on whether their perspectives paint Nintendo in a positive light.

How did you like the HDR screen and how did the device feel in hand-held? Buttons and joystick feel improved from the first switch?

Thanks for all the questions so far. Great and silly alike.

I made the thread while traveling, and i will answer soon each and everyone of them when i get home. I will do so in bundles.

Did you try to fenaggle any info from a nintendo employee? Like if there is any secret ocarina of time remake in dev. Or where is the new smash?

I really dislike the way the switch feels in my hands ;too thin and lacking rigidity. Does the switch 2 feel better. For reference I think the best handheld for ergonomics I have used is the Ally X

It's worth $500 and these games are worth $80?

You know you can buy a real video game or an RTX capable of running games at ultra settings.

Mario Kart World. Lets talk about it. Any new weaponry?
For example:

Chain Chomp - Eats everything and anybody that gets too close (including projectiles from other players.

Ice Flower - Spit snowballs on the ground ahead of or behind you creating ice puddles that cause Karts to momentarily loose traction.

Note: If you're holding an Ice Flower and it comes into contact with a Fireball, the Fireball's effect is neutralized and the Ice Flower is destroyed.

Fire Flower - Spits bouncing fireballs that rachets several times and sets fire to anything it touches. Burning up an opponents held pickups to leave them with empty hands & overheating Kart that sputters to a halt.

Note: These can be used against Ice puddles.

Warp Pipes - These appear when a player in first place crosses the finish line to enter the final lap and only appears for the last Kart approaching the finish line before they enter their final lap. Upon entry they are immediately warped to pole-position but are unable to obtain any powerups for the remainder of the race.

Note: Hurry they will vanish if the Kart in first place gets half way into their lap.

POW Block RETURNS!! - These are very rare but if a racer were to come across one they can use a timed jump to fuck around and find out what it will do.

It will make everyone drop their powerups.

Cheerio!

That's what I'm most interested in this game, many many additional power ups that make sense in a Mario environment. I don't like there's no koopalings though. Maybe future DLC.

In all seriousness, I would really like to know the quality of the screen. If it is as good/better as the Portal's screen, I will be very happy.

Did you see a physical BotW with the digital upgrade and did it load faster
This is a good question, and I'll be interested to see if old physical Switch cards load as fast as off an express SD card. I've got a physical and digital version of TotK.

Best question and would be the first thing I would've checked personally.

how would you check that? Nintendo's own games probably run near locked 60fps, and third party 30fps games probably will look choppy even with VRR.

you'd basically need access to a TV remote, or the TV itself to open the refresh rate UI and then try to make a game drop frames.

Cyberpunk, change graphics mode to quality and then use your eyes.

there's already first images of third party Joycons out there since CES

so I bet many chinese companies will come out with replacement controllers really fast, probably with full sized Hall Effect sticks as well.

there are multiple of them for Switch 1 which massively improve the ergonomics.

there are ones that are almost like entire shells that either connect through USB or through Bluetooth (the Bluetooth ones need to be charged of course)

Honestly, the weird placement of the right thumbstick on the switch is cramp inducing for me. That lower sitting one looks ideal

Back home. Thanks for all your questions, both informative and/or silly. Disclaimer: I thought it would be good to have some actual hands-on answers in here and as a little to GAF.

Below are the answers for Page 1:

Page 1:

Does street fighter 6 have subsurface scattering?
I am going to go with no. The game was pretty playable, definitely in the 60 fps region, but did look worse than other versions of the game.

What types of loading screens can I expect with Mario Kart World?

edit-or are loading screens an issue with any game?
The loading screens i did encounter were of similar length to the Switch and Wii iterations of the game. Between 5-10 seconds tops.

Any sign of a 60fps performance mode on Cyberpunk?
Sadly, no. Nowhere, really. What i did see is that handheld play definitely has some tricks to get to playable state (Read: ''DLSS'') which was easily noticeable when i swung my melee weapon. Having said that, it looked pretty good on the LCD screen. I realize these are ideal circumstances, but it definitely did look like Cyberpunk. Shadow resolution however took a rather noticeable hit, and also ran at half framerate. Docked mitigated a lot of these issues.

Have you seen Titanfall?
No, i did see Metroid Prime 4 though for something in a similar sci-fi style.

did your eyes bleed when you were watching cyberpunk running on switch?
No, not really. Handheld has some obvious gripes, but it is distinctively Cyberpunk, and more impressively, it didn't run hot. Likely because it is DLSSing to a higher resolution, but it looks alright. I preferred docked play though, that definitely is far more in line with what people have been suggesting (PS4+, near a PS4 Pro, etc...)

How many middle aged men trying to grope girls?
None. There were definitely Nintendo people out there that pertain to a certain lifestyle or one would classify as geeky/nerdy. However, i didn't pay much attention to this because i came to see a Switch 2 Experience and not a Rate-my-offline-Neckbeard-for-Online-NeoGAF event.

Describe the smell.
I didn't smell the cartridges, but since its a industrial product, i'd wager it smells industrial.

Does Peach wear a thong
No, but she was picked often enough in Mario Kart. Take that as your will.

Did Nintendo split your cheeks?
In the context of ''Did Nintendo sell me on a Switch 2?'' it is a pretty hard choice actually. It is clear it is working in the PS4 realm with some good niceties on them, and i love how the mice gestures work (Seriously, that's the Nintendo Magic moment right there) In terms of performance? Some games ran amazing but were PS4 quality, whilst others definitely need more time in the oven. I can see this fit inbetween the last-gen cross-gen machines and the Series S.

How you qualify the overall experience performance/Graphics quality wise from 1 to 10?
7.5/8.0/10. Some games were pretty impressive. Metroid Prime 4, for instance, was 1080p120 locked, but its definitely a cross-gen game. Cyberpunk in Docked is however very cool to see, albeit at 30 fps. Nintendo is also definitely re-using its pre-existing tech - Bananza very much runs on the Zelda Switch technology in look and feel.

If God were a chicken, would you eat eggs?
I prefer to think that the egg has to decide what it wants to be, and as such it can only know what it wants to be when it is hatched (Tabula Rasa)

Do you think an average thrower could throw it over a house?
The Switch 2 handheld is a chunk heavier than the Switch 1, and the Dock resembles a toaster. So, yes, an average thrower can do this.

which of these games impressed you graphically and which games did not? Did the controller system etc seem well built unlike the switch 1? How was the screen compared to switch 1 lcd and oled?
  • Prime was great for its performance. Cyberpunk definitely looks great on docked. Bananza impressed me for its destruction. That game has oodles of fun. Hogwarts disappointed me in Docked, that game has some serious framerate issues and if according to recent news it is running at 2K, it definitely was sub-30 FPS and with rather horrible IQ (I suspect DLSS was at play here aswell, even with this performance)
  • Yes, the controller system is rather solid. The whole unit is pretty solid as a whole, the backstand is sturdy and the magnetic Joy-Con connectors are rather incredibly satisfying to use. It literally snaps in and ironically it feels that could sell the system.
  • I couldn't compare to existing systems, but in the ideal light situations, the LCD was pretty crisp, no issues at all. However, it does have the typical LCD issues being rather reflective of light. You will need some shadow to see this properly.
If you saw the hdr, how was it?
I would say it was most visible in Cyberpunk and it brought colors to life. Kirby also popped, despite it looking graphically rather sub-par.

How was Donkey Kong's image quality on the TV. Was it running at 1080p?
Image quality was fine and 60 FPS. Some jaggies, a few framedrops in cutscenes or when going to the overview map. I didn't ask for resolutions, but it looked good enough.

I heard that the demos are running on switch 2 devkits and that they do not let you hold them. They only let people hold the actual switch 2 at the end of the event.
I couldn't hold the Switch 2 dock, those were sealed. I could hold the handheld however. There was a holding and photostand indeed at the end of the event, but you could hold the handheld wherever the game was available to play in handheld mode.

Would you eat the moon if it was made of spare ribs?
I like spare ribs, but i don't like the mess. So, spare ribs without the mess please.

What is this "Mario Kart 8 World" I hear about?
I wrote this in the train back home. I have corrected this. Thanks for the notification.

is the Dpad of the Pro Controller still garbage or did they change it?
They changed it. Its pretty good now.

I've heard Hogwarts looks really bad image quality wise. What's your thoughts?
I agree. Hogwarts really does look rough and the performance is definitely sub-30. Even the Nintendo employee noticed as such. In stills it looks alright, but this is the kind of port that needs more time in the oven.

Pro Controller impressions, please!
Solid controller. I liked playing on it and it definitely feels Nintendo didn't cheapen out on the feel of the device.

Yo,

I'm guessing you didn't see it docked? Because I do not care for handheld gaming. If you did, how does it look on a big TV?
I did see and played several games at docked. In general, it is noticeable that DLSS is at play, but i am also much in the PS4/PS4 Pro/Series S territory. The Switch 2, much like 1, can punch above its weight but it really depends on the game.

Did you get to use the Pro controller? If so are the analog sticks smooth?
I did use the Pro controller and yes, the sticks were smooth. Sometimes a tad too sensitive, but i am sure you change this. I didn't had access to the system menu, so i can't confirm this.

How smooth did handheld cyberpunk quality mode feel?
It has some dips, and Docked is definitely smoother, but it is more than acceptable. Its a 30 FPS experience but this is a fun one to do against Steam Deck.

I did talk to one of the devs there and they did port the entire software stack (RedEngine) to Switch 2, noting how easy it was to do. They also noted its the same build other outlets have been reporting, so things will likely have changed and will change before release.
Are the new sticks worth the hype? Actual floating feeling?
They are definitely better reachable. I had no problem with them as a casual, so i think its fine.

How noticeable is the menu jank in Donkey Kong?
Fairly unnoticable. What does drop frames are cutscenes, big breakage of structure and (surprisingly) going to the overview map. That part dipped rather hard, from 60 to 30. I suspect Zelda tech is re-used into something it is less well suited. But the game isn't out yet, so who knows what may change!

Did you have to pay $9.99 to playtest it?
Nope. I got a invite through a small site i have written for. I could take the off and the rest couldn't.

However, it was rather ironic that i got to playtest this, as i playtested the original Switch all the way back in 2017. That was a rather small room, coming off the unsuccesfull Wii U. Times changed.)

Did the version of Cyberpunk you played still have the "old build" warning from the other events?
Yes.

Need to know about that D-Pad! Is it better than the Switch Pro D-Pad?
Had no comparison (nor do i have a Switch myself), but it was good. It worked as intended.

Were you touched softly and lovingly on the shoulders by the Nintendo Reps when you were playing? If so, did the moment make you moist?
  • No, not at all. They did watch over me but all were surprisingly friendly. What was cringe however was having 100-150 Nintendo folks cheering and clapping as we entered.
  • Fahdis, i am making a serious thread and i don't like these kinds of questions. I realize this is your kink but i prefer if you take this thread seriously as an adult and not as a stay-at-home-kid whose sole existence is NeoGAF.
IQ of exclusive games on handheld mode was good?
Mario Kart definitely looked great on Handheld. But it also looks very much like a cross-gen title.

What are wearing? :messenger_blowing_kiss::messenger_blowing_kiss::messenger_blowing_kiss:
Aside the reading comprehension issues, most people just were in ordinary clothes. Some people were goth/emo-themed.

How much delays does it have? Switch 1 is unbearable, the delay between an input and the result on screen feels like half a second.
You aren't specifying a title, so i am going with the one where i thought it mattered most, Metroid and Street Fighter. MP4 is pretty much flawless, SF, is solid, but i think a real pure purist will spot a dropped frame here and there.

If 1000 people attended the event.
And out of those 1000 people:
- 50% said they showered once last month
- 60% said they plan to shower once this month
- 30% said they showered once last month and plan to shower once this month
- The rest doesn't believe in showers (or deodorant )

How many people did not shower last month and don't plan to shower this month either?
Same as Fahdis: I don't care about your kink and if the many Switch 2 threads with silly takes infected you, please be aware this isn't one of them. I am sharing my experience in the most non-biased way possible. Eat some pizza.

Do the cartridges still taste horrible or so they have cheese and onion flavour now?
Please consider different communities if your questionnaire is that of a 8 year old.

Was everything off carts or memory card? As above interesting to hear load times.
  • Tricky one, because nobody mentioned it. Everything was in demo mode, so i would say it was on internal memory? I should have asked.
  • Load times were, atleast in Yakuza and Cyberpunk, in the region of less than 5 seconds. Loading is fast on Switch 2.

They changed it. Its pretty good now.

in which way? the big issue with the Switch 1 D-Pad was that due to a mix of badly placed contact pads and a missing (and in later revisions very small) pivot point in the center, you could easily get diagonal inputs by accident even tho you didn't want to.

many Tetris players especially avoided using the Pro controller for that reason, but it also was a huge issue in fighting games and some platformers

How much delays does it have? Switch 1 is unbearable, the delay between an input and the result on screen feels like half a second.

there is no global delay on Switch 1. that is entirely game dependent. the only issue the Switch 1 had was a lower polling rate, which mostly affected gyro inputs.

as you can see here, it's not impossible for the same game to have in fact higher latency on PS4 for example:
3uoJdHx.png

some people call it the Mega Man Latency Collection on PS4 for this reason :pie_roffles:
the high lag on PS4 that you see here, if often a result of developers using Sony's API level framerate lock, which is notoriously awful, and results in 2 frames of additonal lag on PS4 over Xbox One X in MMX4, and just a bit less than 1 frame more lag compared to the Switch.

Did you decide to do something other than respond to the AMA before or after the shitposting started?
I decided to post the thread and respond later as i was travelling and i preferred to give every answer a proper response.

Nope — just interested in the perspectives of the OP, not a half dozen posts written like a 4 year old, meant to convince everyone that the Switch 2 is without fault.

Glad to see you're on the same page with GigaBowser. Super cool.
I like that Giga is answering for me and i find the half doze posts about girl sniffing, console sniffing, my BMI and what not just strange.

Folks, i get that GAF is your only lifeline to the world. But please, get out some more.

Is VRR supported in docked mode?
That question is actually fucking brilliant, but i didn't had the people onsite that could answer it. I want to say yes, but i have near-zero confidence in this one. My apologies.

Did you see a physical BotW with the digital upgrade and did it load faster
I did see both Zelda's in their Switch 2 incarnation. They looked good, loading seemed improved. I say seemed as i glanced by them because shockingly enough, even in 5 hours i couldn't play everything.

Favourite ice cream?
Not related to the thread, but strawberry-chocolate.

Curious about this one as well.
Get your existing Switch and smell that. That's the answer.

How long did you get to play before you got stick drift?
Roughly 20 mins per game, but stick drift was perhaps only noticeable at Cyberpunk and Metroid. The annoying thing was that some games had inverted controls in the demo and some didn't. I highly prefer playing with inverted controls, so playing without was some time to getting used to.

Did you try to fenaggle any info from a nintendo employee? Like if there is any secret ocarina of time remake in dev. Or where is the new smash?
I actually did, but i asked about the Switch 1 games ran on Switch 2. Would they get automatic framerate and resolution boosts much like Microsoft and Sony?

The technical Nintendo guy on Nintendo Europe really didn't know this himself, but smile and gesture can tell you a lot more than what words do. So i expect Nintendo will follow suit. It would make sense to do because else every Switch 1 game has black borders, for instance.
Did Bowser show up at your door immediately after you typed this thread?
He arrived later in the thread.

They got him before he could respond …

Ninjas GIF
Haha, but no. I was travelling and then enjoying some evening drinking and socializing. Something which, some of the users here should have done too.

It's worth $500 and these games are worth $80?

You know you can buy a real video game or an RTX capable of running games at ultra settings.
  • Some games are worth $80. Split Fiction, which i didn't play, did look and performed great though.
  • Worth 500$? Well, that's a real hard one. Overall i think the device feels a lot more sturdy and the magnetic click system is in terms of feeling wonderful. The mice is that sniff (heh) of Nintendo Magic so i can definitely see someone pay this kind of money for it.
How well can it handle Crysis?
Probably a lot better than Switch 1.

whats your BMI?
I know this is isn't maleficient or related, but too heavy. However, i don't have a real heavy build i can still pass along.

I do have to note this is a strange question, but it is an AMA after all..

How are the joycons for people with such small hands like yours?
It is funny that you don't know me but you are right on the small hands one. They feel a lot better compared to Switch 1 and they are solid aswell.

What is the game site you are writing for? This weekend, the Dutchies can also go to this Switch 2 experience in Zaandam.
That's the one i went to. I can PM you the details if you are interested.

How did Cyberpunk look in handheld?
Like Cyberpunk, but you can tell it is using tricks (DLSS) to get there. DLSS was also confirmed by the on-site dev. I know this isn't news, but for those wanting extra confirmation..

Are you a dog person or a cat person and hows the battery?
  • Cat person.
  • Obviously couldn't test this as they were demo units. I will note that never during gameplay did the handheld feel warm.
Mario Kart World. Lets talk about it. Any new weaponry?
There is new weaponry, but unlike the person i played against, i didn't ask specific details for most of the games. My apologies. They did say there were new weapons, and there were 24 players now.

If a tree falls down in a field and nobody is there to witness it, does it make a sound?
Yes.

In all seriousness, I would really like to know the quality of the screen. If it is as good/better as the Portal's screen, I will be very happy.
I couldn't compare with the Portal, but the LCD is pretty crisp if reflective. Sun situations will likely suck for the handheld, it needs some shade.

Any peek at how long the capture times are for video captures?
I wasn't allowed directed or offscreen prolonged gameplay videos, but i have a few clips and a few portraits of me holding the game or playing Mario Kart.

How did it feel to hold the greatest ever console sent by god himself?
The handheld feels sturdy, like a perfected Switch 1.

I'm looking forward to the answers
Here they are. :)

Sadly i can't tell you more specifics other than that it felt good and played well. Street Fighter was easily playable.

The most impressive thing for me on Switch 2 was that the new things didn't take any time to get used to. The mouse functionality was incredibly straight-forward and Party Jamboree played amazing on it. In Bananza, the new gameplay features acted as if they were there all along.
