I was at a Nintendo Switch 2 Experience today. Ask me anything (Mario, Cyberpunk, Donkey Kong, Street Fighter and more)

Did you got to try to hold the joycons sideways to play something? Is the any improvement over how the switch joy cons felt?

Tried to use the back paddle for something? How it felt?
  • Yes, i played the Joy-Cons sideways in Mario Party Jamboree. They felt bigger and more sturdier.
  • I haven't used the back paddles.

Do you like open world racers?
Is Mario Kart better for it or worse?
Why is it better/worse?
  • As someone who loved Burnout Paradise, i can get behind the concept.
  • What i played didn't demonstrate it (Plus the demonstration area had constant waiting times, so my experience is with the testdrive demonstration) but i can see this work out well for Mario Kart. I think it would help if there will be things to do along the way.

that doesn't mean it's edge lit.
direct lit displays exist...
The screen looks sharp in relative low light, but it is pretty reflective. So playing outside will need some shade.

Did you ever think you were going to get many serious questions when you made this thread.
Yes, i did. I thought (and i still do) think it is valuable for everyone to get as much confirmation out there as possible. After all, these console launches aren't exactly a yearly event, so ever the more important to attend.

Is there a reason why you are still single. ;)
I can tell you as much that NeoGAF isn't a reason why.

Did you feel it was worth the asking price?
As someone who isn't a diehard fan (But owns consoles of all brands, ironically enough) i am going to say with Slight yes. There are some titles that captured magic, like Donkey Kong. And the mouse functionality just clicks. That right there for me is the kind of Nintendo Magic that nobody else is doing.

When it comes to games, it absolutely needs solid third party support. CP2077 is set to deliver. Street Fighter is definitely serviceable. But Hogwarts Legacy is inexplicably rough. I for one hope that third parties lean in and take advantage of all the modes Switch 2 has to offer, with the mouse, with GameChat, with Nintendo Camera.

Only joking with you. Glad you got invited to one of the events. The rest of use mere mortals will have to wait until release date to get out hands on the Switch 2. Much love.

Some games are worth $80. Split Fiction, which i didn't play, did look and performed great though.

This is the one third party game on my radar to get. I do want this game and Switch 2 just seems like the right platform for it. Don't get SO hung up on the distribution method that you don't have the co-op game ready to bust out at the right moment.

Appreciated.

Did you get any swag?
I got a goodie bag.

What did you have for breakfast ?
I went with full grain bread and chicken.

This is the answer we need!
But not the answer i can provide, other than that Nvidia did confirm that VRR is supported.

How many Gameboy advance consoles taped togrther is the Switch 2?
I thought you would use the Gamecube to make my life a bit easier. That still would be several dozens if just going by GFLOPS count.

So for a GBA, atleast 10.000.

Back home. Thanks for all your questions, both informative and/or silly. Disclaimer: I thought it would be good to have some actual hands-on answers in here and as a little to GAF.
is the Dpad of the Pro Controller still garbage or did they change it?
They changed it. Its pretty good now.
Need to know about that D-Pad! Is it better than the Switch Pro D-Pad?
Had no comparison (nor do I have a Switch myself), but it was good. It worked as intended.

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions but... what? So they changed it but you have no experience with the original so how would you know?

I guess I'll find out when I play F-Zero 99 and veer off the track for no reason while holding down during a ramp jump. :messenger_grimmacing_

yeah, I am very curious to test it.

on launch day I will instantly go into the input tester in the settings and see if I get accidental diagonals.

it would really be a shame if they didn't fix it.
because it's insane that we are currently living in a world where the inventors of the D-Pad have the worst D-Pad out of any first party controller, and even most cheap third party ones.

and in fact, third party controllers like the newer 8bitdo controllers, and especially the Razer Wolverine, absolutely blow them all out of the water.

Would you buy Cyberpunk on it for a full new game experience ?
Considering its a complete package, i think the Switch 2 port is more than serviceable for such a heavy game. I think its a good benchmark of what the system is capable of.

Is DK Bonanza as fun as it looks.
It absolutely is. Wrecking your way through the level and having everything interact with you really brought out the childrens fantasy of destroying things. So i consider Bananza a sleeper hit, its that much fun.

Do you personally know parents that will buy these for their kids like they did with switch?
I was on a terrace yesterday and i talked to some bar folk i know about the Switch 2 (They were Nintendo fans). A customer sitting by got interested and asked me about it, because they were thinking about either buying the Switch 1 or Switch 2.

The thing with Switch 2's price is that it isn't an impulse buy anymore like the original Switch was. Many people bought the original because it delivered incredibly value for its money. The Switch 2, on the other hand, is mostly an evolution of what they already have. And while i personally could see myself buying it for certain games alone, Asking 500 bucks makes it not an impulse buy anymore, but a purchase most people have to think twice over.

I should have clarified, apologies. I do have played with the original D-Pad, but i don't have any recent experience. It played solidly, that's all i can say.

I wasn't allowed directed or offscreen prolonged gameplay videos, but i have a few clips and a few portraits of me holding the game or playing Mario Kart.
Uh.. I actually meant if you were able to click the capture button and save gameplay videos ... I'm guessing that no one has messed with this But I'm itching to know about the quality improvements and length of saved gameplay videos.

You implied that you weren't impressed with Kirby; what was the problem? I enjoyed the original game a lot and was hoping the DLC would basically be more of the same but at 60 FPS.

DK Bananza looks great but there's an early concern that the destruction gameplay could get hollow and repetitive after a bit. After playing it, would you say this could be a valid concern or is it no more likely than any other (traditional) game's gameplay getting old after a while?

Will it blend?
Im sure it will.

Not only was this not possible - It wasn't even mentioned anywhere.

Visually it looks extremely dated. Then i realized it was a Switch 1 title and i am even more stunned by how it looks. It is very fun though, but that game isn't a visual showcase.

I think as the game goes, new mechanics get introduced - I got a brief bit of it in the demo where i suddenly had explosive blocks. So i imagine they will vary this.

LOL Kirby for me is one of the hidden lookers of Switch 1, it's an amazingly looking game with its global illumination, amazing PBR materials, volumetric lights, etc. I don't get how that game isn't in more Switch 1 graphics conversations. The fact it's on Switch 2 upgraded has me very happy actually.

Interesting. All the things you say it should have - It really doesn't show it that well. That, or the build i was playing was downright without shaders.

LOL curiously enough, in the Treehouse version I noticed the same plus RT reflections OR planar reflections on crystal floor, which makes it even more advanced technically... I suggest you look more videos of the game in other levels, the fire/lava levels are an amazing art/graphics showcase for the game on Switch 1

I have seen some people speculate about Dragx Drive actually being a new game mode in a Switch Sports 2. I am 100% fine with this if this is true.

What does everyone think?

To give it a visual example (not my photo):

This is how it looked very much.

I am not going to disprove that, but what i played of the ice level looked like this. I mean, the shot i posted is not far off from an actual Wii title whilst your shots are what i expected. But what i saw is what i posted.
