ICO, SotC, God of War1/2 to have PS Vita remote play

Why does private network (basically LAN) need to use PS3 WiFi? Why can't it just connect on the LAN?

If you select internet, but you are at home, does it somehow go out to the internet and back, or does it just route straight through your LAN?

Private network use Wi-fi from PS3

If you choose internet signal will go to router and from router to ps3. I noticed it because i was using it in home and then i have gone to my friend and there it was working shitty,

Should be routed within the LAN if the target PS3 is in the same network.

Sony said the developers will have to investigate game-by-game. RemotePlay takes up memory and other resources.

While trying to find a solution to my 20GB issues, I ran into this wiki which seems to have some info on remote play requirements on PS3.

http://www.ps3devwiki.com/wiki/Remote_Play

And that was the 'old' remote play. Small memory requirement, but requires a SPU for encoding, and spins up some PPU threads too. The Vita version apparently requires more resources.

So, I went ahead and bought SotC from PSN and tried this. Over-the-internet-connection (local LAN through a Wireless N router) is horrible, very unstable and with bad lag on high IQ settings, plus for reason my Ps3 glitches and refused to connect to the PSN after a few minutes. It requires a system reset to fix. Is stable and playable on low image quality setting, but then the IQ is garbage (looks like a badly compressed 240p YouTube video).

As for Direct connection, it is indeed much better. Is not perfect, lag is noticeable, has frequent frame-drops and vertical screen tearing and compresion artifacs are noticeable even on the high (+1) IQ setting. But a game that doesn't relies much on good framerate like SotC doesn't suffer at all, I killed 2 colossus and was very enjoyable, but it still is far form how I imagine a native vita port of SotC would look and perform though. But, the main problem I have with this mode is that the range is very limited, too limited to be usable from a room other than the very same one the Ps3 is set up at.

Based on comments here I was expecting Gakai-like permanence through my local WLAN, but sadly is noticeable worse than that. However, direct connection is actually decent. Too bad the range is so limited. :/

It will depend on your WLAN setup and whether it's shared and congested by other activities.

I tested it with direct PS3 and a dedicated AirPort Express connection. Didn't notice any lag barring the occasional pauses during exploration. Then connect to a regular WLAN shared by hundreds of devices, it broke up.

I didn't see any screen tearing when connected via PS3 or my Airport though. How's PSN gaming for you in general ?

RemotePlay is also turned on for GoW btw.

I also played it with PixelJunk Monster. For a game like that, it would be like playing with a DS3 with a mini-screen attached.

Does it work if you're in the same room as your PS3, or anywhere on the first floor ?

Yes, the Private Network connection works very well when I am in the same room as my PS3 and router. However, it begins to drop out the moment I reach the stairs, which are literally right outside the room. By the time I get upstairs, it is basically unplayable, i.e. very frequent freezes that last for many seconds at a time.

I'm not interested in using the Internet connection for several reasons, so I would like to focus on getting the Private Network connection to work properly.

Some questions that will help me troubleshoot:

With the Private Network setting, is the Vita connecting directly to the PS3, bypassing the router entirely? Or, is the connection still going through the router?

Is the Private Network setting the same as WLAN (wireless local area network)?

Would a WiFi Extender increase the range of the Private Network (WLAN?) connection? Or do WiFi Extenders only extend the range of your Internet connection?

That's a very interesting link.

requires a memory container of 8-10mb

the remoteplay utility creates 14 PPU Threads upon its startup

uses 1 SPU for encoding (mp4avc/aac needs more processing power than sp/atrac mode)
display transfered is trimmed to 90% of its size (image will be resized to 480x272, no trim on 480p)

14 PPU threads upon startup sound like a lot ! ^_^

I got an Airport Express hooked up to the Extreme. May be able to try this weekend.

I don't think you can extend the PS3 access point, but feel free to correct me !

Edit: connecting to PS3 bypass the router.
