If Black Women Said The Stuff White Men Say

You don't have to click on it if it bothers you so much.

That's a tired non-answer to whether a topic/thread/link/etc. has any sort of redeeming quality meriting a discussion beyond the assumption that it does. And please don't misconstrue this sentiment as me wanting these sorts of topics (i.e. Race) not discussed. The thread on the Slate piece is a fantastic example of a good thought-provoking piece.

Once some people get an idea of how rude and disrespectful they are to minorities, LGBT's, and women.

I understand your point in a larger sense, but seriously: has GAF OT reached a point where anyone on the internet's musings/opinions/observations/jokes on American race relations are important enough to warrant a thread discussing them? Are we going to start linking to forum posts from other forums?

Just needed to quote this.

I had a black manager at the restaurant I worked at in high school who was overly flirty with my friend and I even though we were 16 and 17 and she was like 24.
Anyway, shortly after Thanksgiving she says to us, "So are either of you still craving dark meat?"
A black girl once tried to chat me up in a club. She said “you’re cute, do you come in black?”
I said no.
She said “do you want to?”
TIL we have the best pick-up lines.

Gaf and fetish threads have really been bringing out the worst in people. I'm not out for blood, but I like to see people get frustrated with them. Maybe that frustration will lead them to get curious, stop by, complain and perhaps actually learn something.

These videos are just a prop to get the conversation going. They may not be dynamic, but if they get us talking, they've done just enough and that's always welcomed.

It's kind of a tautological situation. If people talk about it, it's worthy of discussion. If someone makes a thread, and nobody wants to discuss the topic, it's not worthy of discussion and falls off the first page - forever forgotten.

The logic works itself out.

Don't worry, the scroll wheel on your mouse isn't going to break. If you're not interested, just keep a-scrollin.

Think about how much more effort it took to make several posts in this thread than it would have taken just to move along.

I think dialogue works well if both sides are prepared to listen but if one side is doing all the talking in the end you'll just have a vacuum and the occasional drive everyone can pile on.

I agree, but generally, it's extremely difficult to share experiences because they're so quickly dismissed in favor of false equivalencies and anecdotal evidence to oppose the facts.

It's even happened in this thread. Black Gaffers come in and give/share our experience with this matter and quickly the reverse is done and made into a joke. Like I stated earlier, I'm sure the reverse happens and it could be quite uncomfortable, but if we could get people to understand that these occurrences are not rare for minorities and have some harmful roots, you would see more acceptance and support from our side.

We're making progress in feminism threads much like that. More Gaffers are trying to listen and be informed, and as a result, we're getting more involved in discussions about men's rights as well.

If the same could start to occur in threads about minorities, the same would follow. You would see a lot more of us rising against ignorance towards white people. We already do tbh, we don't respect that shit.

That's a big part.

No it wasn't. You called them liars. You posted a condescending stupid fucking post based on information that I'm sure came straight out of your ass. Your post was the same dismissive shit that always happens in discussions about racism. You wouldn't know the first thing about the shit black women experience on a daily basis but that sure as shit didn't stop you from flinging your ignorance around... but hey, you didn't call them dumb.

I disagree. These videos and the ilk are cheap ploys when it comes to using someone's insecurities about race and dating and relationships and trying to juxtapose ridiculous pick up lines to make a false equivalent. If it was a video of a white guy saying those lines to a black girl, we still get the point of the absurdity.

Same with the other fetish video. Funny to listen to, but poorly executed when beginning a dialogue on race/nationality relations and dating and relationships. We have long form essay pieces for that dialogue to occur. Stuff like this puts people on the defensive.

Having said that, I still stand by planning to say "Yeah Bro, Powerplay!" the next time I have sex.

I feel there should be an "American" qualifier in front of "White Men". I've never seen or heard of anyone saying that in Canada. I've only experienced this through Hollywood films.

Ah, the ol' "Why do Americans make such a big deal about race? I've never heard/seen/done x and I'm from *insert country where similar things occur*"

If it was white guys in the video saying the equivalent to black women then it would no longer be a joke since white guys actually literally say the equivalent enough for this video to work as a joke. That's what this video and others like it are, jokes. The joke works because we as the audience understand that these aren't things you should be saying to people so it uses the reverse of the common scenario to make fun of it. This video isn't intended to be the first line of defense against casual racism. it's preaching to the choir and that's the only way the humor can function. The conversation that the video creates however is important imo

For people to get defensive that must mean they're trying to either save face because they said shit like this before and is now the butt of the joke or are completely ignorant to the context and taking the humor seriously. In other words that ain't the videos problem.

My bf told me that...and I didn't even answer back. What the hell does this even mean?! As if all biracial babies come lightskinned with curly hair. Or thats whats considered pretty for a black person.

'do black men all have bigger penises?', 'you're all so feisty', 'you dont sound ghetto', 'i love brown skin, its like chocolate, but you're not that dark, you know like blue black'

Doesn't this happen though? Even if the baby gets darker skin as they get older?

I have two black parents and when I was born I was white with straight hair. I got melanin later. I'd imagine it a mixed kid would have close to the same thing right?

Yo, check this out: black women have a conversation like this: "Do, do, ch. Do-be-do, do-be-do-be-do." Yeah, but white guys, see, they have a conversation like this: "Dee-da-dee, a-dee-da-dee-da-dee-da-dee."

Ah-ha-ha, it's true, it's true. We're so lame.

Was going to post this.

Just needed to quote this.

This is the second time I've seen this Simpson's joke being used in reference to one of these buzzfeed videos and once again, it completely misses the point the video is trying to get across and/or the point of the Simpson's joke (And once again it's terrisus who's quoting the picture).

The video in the OP is not about the discussion of the differences between (US) black and white culture or "white people talk like x but black people talk like y". Like the previous video that focused on the awkward comments white people say towards black people, this video is pointing out the awkwardness/weirdness of comments white men often say towards black women that they are dating/want to date by switching roles and making the awkwardness more apparent to outside groups. The goal of this video is to hopefully discourage the real versions of these statements from being used by white males (or anyone else who says versions of these statements to other ethnic groups).

They should do one titled "things every fucking body say to light-skinned black or mixed race people"

It's a combination of all the others only it's not just from white or black people (it's both sides saying the stupid shit).

Greatest hits include:
What are you?
Where are your parents from?
and
You're not really black though... Not like black black.

No there isn't.

We've already gone over why this is wrong. Stop being an ass and read so you can understand it, k?

If these videos are offending people, good. You should feel bad about speaking to/seeing people of color as if they're objects to be toyed with.

There are people out there who believe this type of behavior is okay. The guy I quoted above thinks it's okay. That's very telling.

If you aren't doing this, you really shouldn't feel the need to be defensive. That's a sign of insecurity to me, a sign that someone feels they're doing something wrong.

No. My ex was biracial, and he was darker than me. no curly hair, and not lightskin. And his sister was the same, she was lightskin but not enough to say she was biracial.

As for being born white, I was the only lightskin out of my sisters. My parents were dark, but my grandad changed colors a lot, from dark to light (at least thats what they told me) and as I got older I face became dark....I think it was due to me being fat, and I got a really permanent tan on my face and arms.

Just because I don't find your reasoning sound doesn't mean I don't understand what you're saying nor does it give you an excuse to insult me, k?

What exactly are you having trouble with here? Instead of being dismissive, maybe we could discuss it? I'm afraid that without you providing counterpoints to my reasoning, I'm left with the assumption that you're being this way because you don't want to find merit in my reasoning, not that you don't find it sound.

Prove me wrong.

The person I was replying to didn't provide any reasoning. He quoted my post and made a statement without any reasoning behind it. I responded in kind.

As for you, you haven't posted anything in this thread worth addressing as far as my comment was concerned, so I don't see what you want me to argue about with you. I think it's fine to have visual preferences, you think it's not. Although you seem to somehow view your views as absolute. I skimmed through your posts in this thread and can't find anything that remotely addresses my original comment.

They're not offensive though. They come off somewhat silly because of the juxtaposition, but they're putting people on the defensive because it highlights experiences of dating.

I understand that. I'm a person of color. I've been objectified by another fellow minority in dating and relationships more than once, so maybe I can see the bigger picture moreso than other people do.

But.. you can't tell people how to feel or what their insecurities are or should be. You can disagree and come up with reasons to argue why it's bad, but telling people how they should feel... do you expect the whole world to agree with your ideas on everything?

Maybe as a whole it's men who talk down to women as objects, whether facing them or behind a woman's back? I can agree with that point.

From that video, what the white guy lines sound like are rather chauvinistic.

If I had a nickel for every time I've been told I have good rhythm for a white boy. And black chicks say cute little things about coffee and cream too. But yeah, some of the examples in the video are really awkward and ridiculous some people say that shit..

Ah, I got you confused with someone else.

Visual preferences are absolutely fine. You can like short people, people with big eyes, etc etc. Those are universal traits that just about anyone can have. You will never see me say otherwise.

However, what I HAVE been saying is a problem, is when you think it's okay to fetish over an entire race of people and pretty much can be categorized as having yellow/jungle/prairie (LOL) fetish.

That is absolute. That's wrong. It's not okay to objectify human beings.

But as I said, I mistook you for someone else, my apologies.

I'm well aware it's my personal opinion, and I'm free to express it. I also am aware that not everyone will agree. That's cool, but I'm free to be disgusted by it.

There was once a time when people thought it was okay to spank their wives. Just because people think it's okay, and even if the world thinks it's okay, it isn't.

Also, I don't see how it's wrong to tell people to see themselves as humans, not objects. You shouldn't be okay with being objectified. It's dehumanizing.

People are offended by this?

Everything is now offensive, it seems. Watching some older Simpsons episodes and it's hard to believe any of that was ever on the air in the first place. Now people would be screaming for their heads.

Ishibear, as you said, you confused me for someone else, and my views are not as extreme as you may have thought. I don't disagree with this post of yours at all.

It sounds like you have a good heart, and I apologize that I have been antagonistic. I really mean that.

My fault too. I have done this twice now in this thread! :( LOL

Thanks for this and sorry about the trouble.

Once some people get an idea of how rude and disrespectful they are to minorities, LGBT's, and women.
Don't say some people. Just go ahead and call out the straight white men because that is the only group you are calling out for being disrespectful. Not saying that its necessarily untrue. Just go ahead and say it.

Um... I don't think she is just calling out straight white men. Gay Asian men, straight brown women, and white lesbians can be just as racist as straight white dudes.

Because not everyone is like that and I wanted to avoid the #NOTALLMEN debate haha

Edit: and Valhelm is correct too

When you pit "some" people against LGBTQ, Minorities, and women you are pointing out one possible group of people in America at least. White males who like sex with women. I'm not saying white men are angels or something because I think all people are messed up but I am pointing out that that is the only group of people she could be pointing out. Its just something I have observed a lot lately.

She wasn't saying talking about people who are necessarily disrespectful to minorities, women, and queer folk at the same time. Also, you're forgetting that it's very possible for more empowered minorities to be prejudiced toward others (the most openly racist person I've ever met was a racist guy), and for certain people on the LGBT/GSM spectrum to look down on others. Gay people shitting on bi people and binary trans people shitting on nonbinary folk are both major issues.
