If the Steam Deck had been made a Microsoft or Sony handheld, people would be going wild.

If it was a device from Sony, how would it cannibalize their first party?
I guess what I meant was, Sony would have to develop separate versions of their first party games like they did for the Vita. Maybe not, as a portable console may be able to play a lower quality version. Then, people would be concern posting about the handheld holding the console back. I just think Sony and MS handhelds would be met with the typical concern posts you see around here, not jubilation.

I wholeheartedly believe if the Steam Deck had a PS logo or Xbox logo on it instead, I bet there would be considerably less naysayers.

How many freaking people have asked for a portable Xbox. Well guess what, that's essentially what the Steam Deck is, but it's better as it isn't just confined to Xbox games but all PC games throughout the ages.

What's not to love. Oh besides, it not having Nintendo games (obviously, but we still get those stupid comments).
dude the steam deck looks so bad
like i love the product

but holy shit that thing is fugly

you really think microsoft or sony would release something looking this stupid?

Steam deck has more value than the ps5/switch/xbox. Gamepass, windows, linux, emulators including the switch and ps3 emulators, sony games, steam games, infinite backward compatibility, handheld, docked. Meanwhile sony is selling 10 hour games for $75, xbox always a waiting game and nintendo release one epic game per year.
It does seem to have off the charts versatility

The number of threads on this thing kind of shows the opposite. My brother in law is not a gamer and he knows about it. Given how the mobile market is so different to the previous market they have operated in also deserves some questions.

It seems like gamers are pretty stoked overall, but yes, of course it matters which company is making the product…
If like Dell was making it, there'd be even less excitement.

I agree there would be less naysayers and more hype but that's because we all would know there would be games being made for the system.

This is more a hobbyist device. Where it feels like the customer is going to have to do the work to play games on it generally speaking.

at least that's why i roll my eyes for now or at least I'm not drinking the kool aid.

Also MS and Sony would have a proper launch. People already looking at q3 2022 on the StD after (I'm guessing)100s of thousands sold max.

With Xbox handle held, I will have gamepass games to play with.

Now that you mentioned, they could have made the series a portable console like switch. Missed opportunity.

What if Nintendo made the Deck?

I think Nintendo teraflops and Valve teraflops are not comparable,

Valve 1.5 teraflops are handsome and can love you long time,

Nintendo teraflops are flaccid and for kids.

If it was made by MS or Sony, you could bet that it would have great controls. And after the Steam Controller/Box fiasco, I'll not pull my trigger on this one...

... I'll wait until the Deck hits the below 100 bucks price range and then buy one to entertain me for a couple of days.

That's because it would be less fiddly, look better. And while we all love the history of pc games, they are all great, compatibility with all games on the current systems would probably be a requirement.

I already hate the Steam Deck purely because of all the fucking stupid threads it spawns.

"It's the Switch Annihilator!"
"People aren't psyched because it's not a Playstation thing!"
"Is it a console?"
"We need to talk about the elephant in the room: the Steam Deck is not a Switch"
"Is a Steam Deck a pc or a console when a console is not a pc?"
"How do I cook an egg?"
"Steam Deck: has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like"

Well duh, having first party games optimized specifically for the system would be nice. Imagine playing something like dragon age origins on the deck.. the analog stick controls suck and the icons are microscopic. Most of my steam games are classic Wrpgs where it's nice to have your face 8 inches from the screen to read stuff when you need to.

Still find it amusing that the switch got totally shit on for having a 720p screen with it been called ancient and shitty and yet now the deck has one and it's totally fine.

Because outside of Fast RMX, Nintendo's games look like ass and 720p makes it worse. It's not "art style", it's just shitty graphics.

Sony and Microsoft have proven themselves in the console market. Valve has not, just the opposite.

And if Sony or Microsoft released a $600+ handheld, it would crash and burn.

that's true, but it also makes sense because if it was a dedicated Handheld console it would mean that it would get dedicated game support with games specifically designed for its hardware, and would do for at least 5 years.

the way it is now, it's a very underpowered PC with no real first Party developer that will make games for it nor will 3rd party devs. so you are at the mercy of the minimum specs of any given game.

This product best interest imo will be to produce data to see where we are in term of scalability from handled product with some effort on the specs to high end desktop ones.

Its just a difference in Marketing.

Valve: Hey, uh, so here is a portable thing. Do whatever you want with it i guess...idk play games.

Xbox: 9000 tweets, 1 music video, youtube ads, Article from Jeff Grubb and just general loud noises.

PlayStation: 1 picture on Instagram and nothing else. 7 billion likes in 3 minutes.
what kind of general loud noises we talking about? Like girls moaning in excitement?

Also Valve products dont generate excitement coz they pissed off their fans by not releasing HL3 :)

You got me. That is because:

1. It wouldnt weight as much.
2. It would be sold on a larger scale.
3. It would be supported by big name exclusive titles.

Gaming PCs need a keyboard, mouse (or a trackpad) + Xbox controller, hence clunky in the living room setup.

To improve user experience without a physical keyboard, MS copied Android OS on the Surface Duo. LOL MS already copied Chrome web browser.

Windows 10 user experience + Xbox controller is garbage for "appliance" gaming OS and control method for living room and handheld devices. Microsoft's Xbox team (lead by Phil Spencer) didn't think about integrating a mouse trackpad on the Xbox controller. Valve's idea is simple yet effective for gaming PCs.

Microsoft couldn't transition the gaming PC into handheld devices due to user experience issues with the UI design.

Apple to Microsoft, Redmond start your photocopiers.
