the characters that have really made Radiata Stories so fun to play with so far. Even though I'm only a couple of hours into the final English build, I've already met a diverse cast of weirdoes, jerks, and prima-donnas -- and I like each and every one of them. Take the well meaning (but dorky) Captain of the Rose Cochon, Ganz Rothschild, for instance. Big and aloof, the experienced duty-driven knight is a fascinating mix of serious and comedic who takes his undying devotion to the kingdom of Radiata and highlights it with a jolly grandfather-like attitude. The mustached warrior is a great supporting personality to the outgoing and lively main hero Jack Russell. And I have to admit, that after spending a lot of time spell casting my way through several of Square Enix's heavier RPGs, the lighthearted approach is more than welcome

One of Radiata's more interesting gimmicks, however, is its take on the aforementioned Suikoden ideology. Recruiting new and exciting helper characters is a big part of the game -- and finding the proper way to recruit them can be a real pain in the ass for those that have never played a Suikoden game.

But I will say this: I absolutely love Radiata Stories' presentation. In addition to the voice-over work and humor I've already alluded to, the art style here is superb. Much in the same vein as tri-Ace's other titles such as Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean, the game has a little bit of that Tales of Symphonia look thrown in as well. It's bright, colorful, and always beautiful. Running the game in progressive scan and widescreen makes it look even better. I also can't forget to mention the other cool presentational things like an ongoing friends lists (with complete character bios) and Jack's unique method of searching areas for hidden goodies (you kick things sharply with your foot). Personality is something that Radiata has in spades.
