IGN Review: Black (PS2/XB)

8.7 for PS2: http://ps2.ign.com/articles/690/690579p1.html
8.6 for Xbox: http://xbox.ign.com/articles/690/690732p1.html

Still waiting for the GameCube review
lol

Not sure why the difference in score.

I'd go so far as to say that BLACK shows the limits of the PS2 and Xbox audio systems. It's so good that the PS2's Dolby Pro Logic II can't keep up and the Xbox's 5.1 mix is barely up to the task.

That's the only comparison I read, but they both have 10s for Sound.

Anyway, sounds great and I really liked the demo. I'll probably wait for a price drop though, just because there's so much other stuff coming out.

Each level has a secondary objective which simply requires that you collect or destroy a certain amount of classified documents, some that the US wants for keeping and some that it wants destroyed for obvious reasons. These are generally easy to come across and collecting them isn't a problem.

I heard the harder difficulty levels require you to complete all secondary objectives. Seems like someone played it on an easy difficulty

The difference will probably be from the demands of the genre on each platform. A little more is expected from the fans because of the caliber of the competition on the Xbox. At least that's my take anyway.

Just awesome what they are pushing out, current gen goes out with quite a bang.
The gun detail alone is great.

game looks great for current gen no doubt, but six hours of gameplay and no multiplayer? also ign has ripped on other games like DOOM III for being old school and giving u nothing to do but shoot, and while they point this out in black it never really seems to have a negative impact on the review. Looks like fun, but a rental, six hours of gameplay consisting of nothing but shoot everything in sight does not a purchase make...for me anyway.

That's weird(about the score): the game is so scripted that I noticed some slowdowns in the PS2 version when the same part is perfectly fine on the Xbox version

There are some cool shootout sequences, but very few specific sections that make you look back and say, "Man, that part where X happened was awesome!" It's almost as if the game set its bar right from the get-go and never really strays from it, neither lower nor higher. To its credit, BLACK really has zero downtime throughout the course of the game - all of it is awesome, trigger-always-pulled action. But none of it is flat-out phenomenal in the truest sense of the word. There aren't really any moments in the game that rise above everything else around it, creating any sort of contrast within the context of the game.

This is a little hard to explain, so I'll use a movie example. Raiders of the Lost Ark is, in my opinion, the most perfect movie ever made. It's not my overall favorite, but I have absolutely no faults with it and it's fantastic all the way through. But even though I love every second of the movie, certain standout sequences come to mind when I think about it, like the face melting sequence at the end or when Indy simply shoots a man after an impressive display of swordsmanship. Or the part where Indy is being dragged by a truck and fights his way into the cabin. Or hell, the classic intro. I could go on and on, but you get the point. Each of these sequences stands out on its own.

This isn't really the case with BLACK, however. Some sections are cooler than others, sure, but only slightly so. You're always shooting at soldiers and things are always exploding. There aren't sudden shifts in this scenario where you're in total control one second and then being chased by a helicopter the next. The environments change, but the action doesn't.

Really, this is more of a missing aspect of the game than a fault. What's there is great, but had there been something more every now and then, it would have shaken up the feel of the entire game.

My favorite part of the review even though the whole thing is fairly bad. Good god their writing and logic gets worse by the day. It feels like the writing I used to do in junior high. I think the game is absolutely average and using their scale would have given it about a 7.0 myself but this seems like a bizzare way to equate giving a game a "great rating". No to mention the review is 5 pages. You would think they were reviewing some epic game instead of a 6 hour romp. Like I say I get differing viewpoints and that he could have given it a score higher than I feel it deserves but I thought at least I would understand why that was by reading the review. No such luck.

I promise not to torture myself reading IGN but then I still do it. I'm stupid :-(

on easy you have to complete 0 secondary objectives
on normal you have to complete 1 or 2 secondary objectives i believe.
on hard you have to complete 6/12 secondary objectives.
Extreme not sure but most likely 10-12 secondary objectives.

the demo is awesome. can't wait to play the full game :)

Normal difficulty requires usually 3 secondary objectives, easy doesn't require any. SO I GUESS SOMEONE WASN'T PLAYING ON EASY

...And all that jazz.

so you're saying normal difficulty isn't 'easy'?

That doesn't make much sense to me.

On a nice High resolution TV/Monitor it looks that good for me. I'm speaking of the Xbox version. It also sounds excellent. If only it had remotely the gameplay and design to match.

You have much to learn jr.
Welcome to 48GB/s of framebuffer bandwidth at its finest.

"I've already talked a fair bit about the visuals earlier, but it should be made very clear: this is a fantastic looking game. The amount of whiz-bang technology that Criterion has been able to implement on the PS2 and Xbox is pretty damn amazing. Burnout looked great, but BLACK looks better.

From the destructible environments to the absolutely outstanding particle effects, BLACK is a true showpiece for both systems."

What-the-fuck-ever.......

A 2006 FPS that lasts six hours, has absolutely nonexistant AI, no jumping, no leaning, no story, and NO MULTIPLAYER is now an 8.6 game?

Oh, but you can blow shit up and...............wait for it..............its made by EA!!!!

Should've known.

I can look past much of the shortcomings, but 6 hours?

Its going to be a tough sell. I'll probably still buy it cause I want a viceral shooter and I don't see that happening next-gen for a while.

IAWTP. Well, everything but the EA part. I don't care who makes my games.

I was all on the Black gravy train until I played it a few months back. Ever since that crushing day of disapointment, I haven't cared since.

Can't wait, almost tune time for its release? Anyone seen the commercial for this game? It's being advertised as a PS2 game, there's no mentioned of the Xbox version anywhere in the commercial.

Haven't you heard, it's the last great PS2 game!

I was gonna buy this until I heard that it's only six hours long. I'll rent it. The demo was really fun though :lol

Maybe I'll buy it down the road... There are too many good games coming out in March to skip out on for Black.

Worst tagline ever on a magazine cover (probably not, but pretty colossally stupid in light of the games still coming out).

Well the tagline was
"Black
The Last Great PS2 Game?"

It's just an attention grabber, but it was more of a question than a statement.

I could do with more Snowblind and less Black myself. At least one developer was interested in trying to make a whole game. :)

in its truest sense, "phenomenal" means something like "pertaining to an observable event." aren't i pedantic.

Yeah, the last great PS2 game will be God of War 2 in 2007. :lol :lol :lol

*edit*

Or Final Fantasy XII in 2008. :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

There was no question mark on the cover of that magazine when I saw it on the newsstand. I double-checked. In fact, I'm pretty sure it ended with an exclamation mark.

I'm afraid I lost all interest in this game a month ago.

That score, and those impressions certainly aren't going to make me change my mind.

Fuck man.. It seems I am right. Black is indeed PS2s answer to Brute Force Xbox. Hyped a lot, getting great scores at first but suckes on all kind of levels.. And the comment about the sound is hilarious. Has criterion outdone DD 5.1 specifications? hahahahahaha
