IGN: Soulcalibur IV Review

games thrive on sexism and cheesiness, news at 11.

Namco knows their demographic and lets face it, the huge mammories have been a talking point about this game from day 1.

I agree with it being pretty out of control and as a former DOA fan, I'm kind of sick of it. I'm not nearly to the point of not buying the game, but I'm not going to bust the game out when the whole family is around.

Btw, the people who are saying this is worse than DOA are very wrong. See Lei Fang, Christie, Kasumi, and Hitomi's endings. DOA really is all about breastsploitation of its female characters.

Namco are locked in a Breasts Cold War with the DoA games and Capcom. They've got to make them bigger and more jiggly, otherwise someone else will.

Great observation. Man I still remember that chick in Lost Planet, Capcom did a great job on her. But why dont people complain about DOA Beach Volleyball? Was there even a point to that game? At least Namco makes the best fighters, Nothing better than SC or Tekken for me. VF is boring.

If only VF5 had more tits it might have been successful. Let that be a lesson to you, AM2.

I'm not against it for prudish reasons. I just think it further strengthens the stereotype that video games are and geared towards anti social basement dwellling losers. There's plenty of real boobs that are easily accessable on the internet anyways.

Oh dude I completely agree with you, 100%. I understand that many of our videogame playing brethren are 4chan-frequenting freakshows but if the medium is ever to gain respect (much like comic books have in the last 15 years), devs are going to have to stop making poor design choices.

It's OK though, SFIV is the fighting game to wait for... even if they made Chun Li's absurd thighs even more silly. :lol

That's the gayest reason not to buy a game I have ever heard. And I say that with both meanings of the word.

Maybe if it was a good game it might have been successful.

happy and homosexual? that doesn't even make sense...

I await the day when videogames aren't dominated by the bizarrely prudish fetishes of Japanese culture. I'm more offended by how restrained the game is than anything. Only going so far just underlines the obvious fact it's pandering to the audience.

Basically I want a Soul Calibur where I can chop Ivy's tits off.

I think Namco gives a lot of inherent attractiveness to playing their more conservative characters like Xianghua and Hilde, who I guess are more tasteful designs in a way (disregarding X's butt-pose and her baby tendencies), but still there are really MUCH more pressing concerns that fighting games have to deal with imo. Just look at the other characters on the cover, (Star Wars) and you have one right there. Having not played it yet, The Apprentice's design is the only one that is close to a fit.

Really guys, I think the SC team feels their game is a pretty serious fighter but they like to have some "fun" with their designs as well. Hell, could Maxi look anymore like Elvis in 4? It's not like the characters are spending the cutscenes fawning and gawking at each other, or anything like that. Look at any of the trailers and there's nothing resembling the "creepness" associated with DoA trailers.

EDIT: Can't believe I gave this a serious response...

TheExodu5 said:
I never said they had to be ugly. Having them portrayed as painfully obvious sex objects is just the kind of thing that prevents video games to ever be taken seriously.

Oh please. Women have been objectified in all forms of media for centuries. It doesn't stop anyone from taking them seriously. Ivy has big tits. Big deal. It's so lame to try to turn the art style in a fighting game into some kind of issue. What next? People avoiding Street Fighter because of Chun Li's thighs and Zangief's little red draws? Some of you act as if movies, music, etc don't exploit sexuality. As if video games created this and it's proof of how antisocial we are.

I agree the other parts in your post but this is just wrong. We can and will of course bash games with questionable art. I myself would be happy if women who FIGHT to live would have a hint of that in their physique. Super model bodies are great for cat-walking, but lifting a foot above the waist... not so much.

And don't give me any shit about some fugly bodybuilding bitches. Just a hint of believability is what I'm after.

This is your problem, gaming doesn't need to be a respected meduim. Video games don't need to prove shit to anyone, you play them because you like them and why would you let anyone tell you different. Makes me laugh that are too weak mind that they need approval from society to do something they enjoy.

Now back to the tits n ass can't wait to play this tonight. How is the game music?

Namco/Project Soul have got a good grip on both of these systems. The game looks outstanding, It really makes me want an adventure game from them or something. The opening looks like CG in some parts, but its all realtime.

I am not sure if the boobage will affect my purchase or not.

I NEED MORE PICS!!!!

Just to... errrr .... uuummmm.... decide.

(More pics please.)

Well, excuse me for having a little class... but what's occurring is the opposite of what you're saying. Society wants these absurd character designs, that's why marketing execs and devs dwell on them... because overweight losers like the designs and will buy the product.

Having said that, let's compare games to other mediums: if a movie was nothing but shameless sex appeal and mindless violence, I wouldn't be interested. Why can't I hold the same standards for games?

I just rented this. I'm not too ready to $60-trust a console-exclusive fighting game, but that's another discussion.

The 360 is hooked up to the living room TV instead of my monitor. I don't like playing stupidly juvenile shit up here. We'll see how it goes.

I think you lost all your class when you started complaining about overweight people who spend all their time in the basement.

How is any of this discussion relevant to this game anymore?

Im pretty sure that if SC series was only known for its character models, and had clunky fighting, it either would be a poor seller or would have never made it past SC2

There was that BMX game with naked women or something..that flopped...those beach volley ball games don't really sell...

SC provides the fighting experience it should, and it also pushes the 'fantasy' aspect of the game from all angles, from the weapons, to the moves, to the fighters...due to that, Im ok with it, and do not feel it cheapens the experience.

Now if the UFC game puts women MMA in, cool, but if it uses Ivy type women, then thats objectional.

SC is pure fantasy to me, therefore Ivy et all, are cool with me.

You do realize that your whole cool and callous attitude sounds like a defense mechanism? No biggie, I DO WHAT I WANT.

I was planning on picking this up tomorrow but I am passing the store today so i'll get it then. Time to charge the bluetooth.

I only got two options my 16:10 Samsung monitor or my SDTV from 2000. :lol You know damn well what was my choice.

But what this I hear about a patch for PS3, did it make the online better?

Come on. I prefer athletic women to those like Ivy(Hopefully you can create them in the game). But this is the game where the blind deaf mute does battle in S&M gear.

To me, it's the first fighting game I'd like to play in FOREVER. I was never a fan of Virtua Fighter 5 and by the time I got a Playstation 3, Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection was old hat.

All areola are not created equal.

I've seen plenty of big tit nudes with mini areola surrounding the nipple.

Google Image Search Francine Dee, NSFW.
Francine Dee has implants, though, and implants sometimes fuck up the general positioning of the areola; thus, the reason why hers are located at like the top of her breasts (IIRC).

I mean, if they come out and say "Ivy has had breast augmentation surgery", then maybe... but seeing as how the Soul series takes place in what... the 17th century? Somehow I doubt that's even a possibility.

In the end - it's just a game, but I think the costume/character design on Ivy this time around is just shit.

I've never understood how people could be attracted to "hot" video game characters. I get why people like porn, but we have yet to reach a point in games where the graphics are lifelike. Now, maybe if Chris Redfield were real, I'd understand. Anyway, do you guys who like looking at Ivy imagine what she would look like if she were a real person or are you actually turned on by this character itself?

Nah man I just rented it so I only saw that one chick dodging the blade monster thingies that almost shows you a cooter shot...I will get it used eventually.

But yeah man I love big boobs in video games I mean that's what we all want them to look like anyway, well a lot of us.

Also bouncing boobies in MGS4, Rosemary? Sixaxis? yes!

Why do people complain about this stuff? I mean girls usually dont play these types of games, just stuff like the sims, puzzle quest, uno, hexic hd, etc...

give us a break dammit!

Cant wait to make my custom characters, only 4 hours more of work! yay!

You just answered your own question. Whatever you get from Chris Redfield is what these guys get from Ivy. I think for most people, it pretty much ends there.

This game is throwing huge jugged shrill voiced maid outfitted characters at me in Story mode.

Downstairs I go.

The tits are awesome. I love them. It's a huge part of what make the game for me. That and the kickass gameplay and presentation.

Well, these last two more. But the huge fucking tits!

I don't think most people are 'attracted' to video game characters. There's a difference between saying a video game girls hot and wanking to it like 4chan.

And serisouly people, if you don't by this game because of OMG boobies, do you extend that to every facet of your life? I hope you don't buy beer, tires, soap, shampoo, razors, shaving cream.... do I need to go on ? Sex sells, has sold for forever, and will continue to sell. Does it dissapoint me that they gave members of the cast MASSIVE racks? yeah it does. Just as much as I was dissapointed they gave Lady a massive rack in DMC4. Did it in any way affect gameplay, or the enjoyment of said game? Heck no. So I suggest you take out your angers in the following way: pick up a controller and beat the hell out of Ivy. Maybe, just maybe, in the proccess you will have fun and keep playing.

There are boobs on my beer? WHERE? :D

Hey if they were just normal sex objects, I may consider buying the game. Now it's past the point of caring that much about the sex objects, it's just that they look downright ridiculous.

edit: you should realize, I wasn't that big into SC4 in the first place. This would just be what tapped me over the edge. I bought and beat DMC4, the sex aspect in there didn't stop me...though the design of the characters was quite disappointing as it resembled Ninja Gaiden more than DMC3.

It's kind of funny. When did big boobs become the enemy? Sure, some may say that it is immature and perverted but...it's just a body part. A virtual body part. Isn't the gameplay the only thing that really matters?

just played for a few hours...sure, there are plenty of double dragons, but really, Ivy is the -biggest- offender (kekeke.) Plenty of the characters have normal sized breasts. Knocking off armor comes off as a bit sexualized (I mean, it just pops off until the girls are fighting in their panties, instead of degrading realistically.)

Still, the game has 1000x more class than DoA4 (not that that takes much.)

The announcer is more embarrassing and cheesy...and wow, don't even get me started on the English voices :lol

No. I'm talking about areola size, not placement.

Tiny areola is not uncommon. :|

I agree that this should hardly be a dealbreaker of an issue, but obviously the visuals and the character models do mean a lot. They're what we're controlling, they're how we interact with the game itself. How they look is pretty important in terms of how engaging the game will be.

As Mamesj said, it's all personal preference; Ivy's image may be distasteful to some, may be idealistic to others, or simply just any ol' female video game character to everyone else.

Some people need, even in an unabashed fantasy environment like SC, for the characters in the universe to be more typical and average - to keep even a sliver of 'believability,' I suppose. Others, myself included, appreciate Namco's attempt to have fun with it by making the characters extraordinary (especially through a feature as significant, as this thread proves, as the major boobage).
