I cannot believe any is actually in favor of not even having the option for voice chat. Like seriously what is even going on??
Common sense isn't that common anymore these days.
I cannot believe any is actually in favor of not even having the option for voice chat. Like seriously what is even going on??
How much do you think a new IP on Wii U is going to sell? I'm curious to be honest.
I still can't think of a valid reason they would leave out an option for voice chat, or at least voice chatting with friends, other than laziness.
So I'm going to have to agree with IGN here.
The "you're crap" example is a polite Japanese
man not wanting to reiterate the things actual people do say in voice chat in games. You are not going to see him ever retell what he wants to say, which is that if he were playing the game with an American, he'd be called a "Jap fag" by at least one of them. I'm guessing those are "facts" too?
Rule of thumb when reading interviews with people from Japanese businesses: take the negative things they say and crank them up 300%, and that's usually what they actually mean.
There are no two teams of equal skill.
Splatoon? Realistically, anywhere between 300-500k is my guess and I figure that's what Nintendo would be expecting as well considering when it was announced. It's certainly going to outperform TW101 which got absolutely zero marketing what-so-ever and a concept that was hard to sell. Splatoon doesn't have that. The promise of free post-launch content is a great way to build up the word of mouth that this kind of game needs. It's been advertised on Twitch quite a deal (YouTube adverts as well I think), has a deal of TV adverts running on western kids channels, got several major Japanese preview events (plus TV adverts already running right now), got a bunch of good press from previous events and positive feedback from the Testfire event and is overall getting a huge push compared to what I'd expect a Wii U game would get.
I don't expect it to break near a million of course but I really do not think that it will be a bomb by any definition when it comes to Nintendo's expectations. It will, probably, perform what it needs to in order for Nintendo to think about the future of the franchise on another platform.
He could of also been called an Asian gaming God or something like Daigo but he was clearly doing terrible for someone to say what they said.
The age demographics on the Wii U disagree with you. Do you really think kids are the ones playing Nintendo games? No sir, its grown-ass men who buy Nintendo products. These "it's for kids" arguments are not based in reality.
I guess another thing that ties into this sales discussion is the timeframe we're predicting this LTD for.Splatoon? Well my projection which I stated in this thread is 300k for the US for the year, and I think I'm being pretty optimistic frankly.
If that's enough for Nintendo to consider a future for the franchise, then cool. But it's still terrible numbers.
Anyway "2015" is a cop-out reason at best
Anyway "2015" is a cop-out reason at best, like "for the sake of it" or "it has always been that way". If I need to talk to my teammates I will use skype or teamspeak. At least I will get people who speak my language.
I'd even make an argument that nowadays we don't need in-game chat at all as dedicated clients are widespread enough to have voice chat already available when it really matters.
Anyone that doesn't have the PC next to the console is almost guaranteed to already have a phone with skype or TS.
Seriously, i dont see whats the problem here because of no voice chat.Nintendo is a toy company, and their primary targets are kids. Do you think they want parents to ear things in their kids game like " f**k off, you suck, etc, any blasfemy words that you wouldnt want your kid to hear?
If heard enough in COD to always mute everyone because im just tired of hearing stupid things. Good thing they didnt include that. I only hope they will add more emote like option to give the ability to do more strategy if you want to compete with friends, not asking more. Even if it doesnt happen, its a day one for me.
that's kind of the point, though. Nintendo wants this game to be an accessible shooter for their audience. they're assuming quite a few people are going to suck at first and the development team doesn't want them to be bullied and discouraged from playing again.
not saying cutting it completely is the best option just interpreting his point a bit more clearly for you
300k in the US? Huh, thought I read 50k. Well then I don't know if I actively disagree with your prediction but I really don't know how it will pan out later for the Christmas season.
Either way I suppose that's a fair assessment. We'll see. I don't particularly care to do any wagers, I'm just hoping the game does well and that Nintendo will take most of the feedback to heart when it comes to keeping it alive. I'd hate to see the most original thing they've done fall to the wayside, be it either because of bad results or because of bad decisions.
It's a perfectly valid criticism. It's obvious that it's pointing out that Nintendo aren't keeping up with the rest of the industry when it comes to features. In 2015 every online game I can think of has the option for some sort of online chat. That shouldn't have to be spelled out for you.it is pretty annoying with no other justification attached. I'm going to just start posting the date when I don't agree with something.
"it's fucking May 10th Nintendo, what are you doing?!?!"
Now go to an elementary school playground and you will hear all these words anyway. Stop kidding yourself with the "wah wah protect children" bullshit.
I don't agree with this "more more more" mentality. Just because something is possible doesn't mean it should be done just because someone might want it. If the feature does not fit with authorial intent it has no place being there no matter how much you might personally want it. I cannot fathom that this topic did not come up at some point during Nintendo's development meetings for this game. The fact that voice chat is omitted seems to me on purpose. As has been pointed out over and over again, there are pretty easy workarounds involving other apps. Alternatively, if voice chat is so important for your overall experience that you simply cannot live without, perhaps consider playing something else.
Maybe just first month sales would be like 75-120k. But lifetime won't be 50k I don't think. That would be disastrous even by Wii U terms![]()

well many people have been predicting W101-level sales
which I personally find hilarious

I think Nintendo is aware that children themselves hear naughty words. As always, I suspect they're mainly paranoid about protecting their image more than actual children - they're worried about what parents and the media will say about squeaky clean and safe Nintendo branding. This is why they were so fast to stamp out Swapnote when trouble happened in Japan.
It doesn't matter if grown-ass men are in fact the ones buying Wii U's. Nintendo still has the pop culture image as a children's brand that is family friendly. (Note that I disagree with the extent of Nintendo's conservatism and paranoia. But I see where it's coming from.)

This is patently bizarre.

This is subjective, but some games can be more enjoyable simply by chatting with other people while playing. Kinda like that some games can be more fun when playing local multiplayer eventhough that online multiplayer is also available.
Voice chat is a necessity in these types of games and Nintendo should have included it. That being said I wonder how many people arguing are actually going to pick up splatoon on the 29th.

Yeah I usually predict low for Wii U games, but even I wouldn't say it's possible for a W101 level bomb.
Nintendo clearly plans to market this game a little bit and frankly this is a Nintendo developed new IP which gives it an inherent edge on the platform I think. And I think it looks like it has much wider appeal just by itself as a concept.
I'm wagering first month would be 110k. But year total will be 300-400k.
Some Nintendo games have voice chat and had it years ago. It's not a company-wide policy but a decision made for this game. One that I personally don't see as an issue because I'll have fun with Splatoon regardless.
And any game thats not the same old pile of shit weve neen playing for the past decade can be more fun too.
Just because you put sunglasses on the same old shit doesnt mean its suddenly not the same old shit. It just has sunglasses now.
Here he have tons of people pavlovically conditioned to respond to the sunglasses, instead of the pile of shit its sticking out of.
'Whats this? It doesnt look like the same old shit.'
'Are you sure?'
'Yeah its really colorful'
'Shit can be green sometimes'
'Nah, its more than that, it also smells nice. Good smells dont usually come from shit, and it doesnt feel nasty when i touch it. Its actually pretty fun!'
'Oh wow, does it have sunglasses?'
'Hmmm... Whats this... No, it doesnt... IT DOESNT HAVE SUNGLASSES OH MY GOD!!!!!
'OH MY GAWD, NINTENDO DIDNT CHECK THE BOX!!! IT DOESNT HAVE SUNGLASSES!
'Its 2015, every pile of shit ive seen has sunglasses!!'
'Standard feature!!! Standard feature!'
Whelp, thats too bad it doesnt have sunglasses, i was looking forward to eating something other than shit. But, sunglasses.'

Its not more more more mentality when its been standard in multiplayer shooters for the better part of 6 years, maybe its more more to you or some nintendo fans because of nintendos terrible pace at adjusting to modern gaming. Its a poor design decision to cut out player choice because of the off chance you'll meet someone douchy. Even if its not a personal impact to you that feeling of disgust should be there on a consumer level that a company is limiting the consumwrs ability to do things which have been standard for years now.
You can protect children while still offering voice chat. Just have the option disabled by default and give multiple communication settings (none, friends only, all).
insertValvequoteonthatmatter
Am I the only one that finds this eerily similar to the ludicrous defenses for the always online Xbone?
IF YOU DON'T HAVE INTERNET YOU CAN JUST TETHER YOUR PHONE!
Again, it's fine that you don't care and wouldnt use it. No one here is demanding that you use voice chat. Some Nintendo games have voice chat and had it years ago. Seriously I'd chat only with my friends anyways so I can just use skype already. It's not like people are slamming Riot because you cannot chat with people you are playing with in Random at LoL.

Why do you think something as arbritrary as features, in a list, checked on the back of the box, are so much more important than the actual game?
And any game thats not the same old pile of shit weve neen playing for the past decade can be more fun too.

That's a hell of a straw man.
That's a hell of a straw man. You keep reiterating the same shit; that the only reason anyone could or should want voice chat is because it 'checks a box' and not because anyone finds that feature legitimately useful or enjoyable hence its standardization to begin with. That people consider voice chat 'more important than the actual game' as opposed to 'an important element of any socially-oriented game'. You keep twisting these arguments to have boogeymen to talk down to.
