IGN: Top 10 Best Soulslikes

IbizaPocholo

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

The legacy of the Souls series is not defined just by its own games, but also by the sub-genre that spun off because of its existence. Covering anime, sci-fi, fantasy, indie, AAA, 2D, 3D, and beyond, here are our picks for the top 10 Best Soulslikes.

10. Lords of the Failin'
9.Code Lame
8. Dark Sighers 3
7. Mortal Shill
6. Cash-in
5. RemNOT FROM the Ashes
4. The Splooge
3. Salty Sanctuary
2. Star Souls Jedi: Fallin' over
1. No

There can be only one Souls.

And it's Dark. And Demon's. And Bloodborne, actually. Elden Ring too, maybe. It's complicated.

Wow that's a shitty list even for ign standards...

I mean is there more Souls-like games outside of From? I am not really sure about that....

Much as I love FROM's stuff, people need to take them down off this pedestal.

None are perfect, and all have room for improvement, so other people trying their hand with a similar formula is important.

I haven't played that many games on the list, but I really enjoyed Mortal Shell although it was a bit short.
The Surge was really fun - I actually preferred the first one, in one of the areas I remember getting a dead space vibe.
I remember playing the original Nioh and getting about half way through and stopping, I remember not enjoying changing stances. I really need to give Nioh 2 a go at some point.

If Star Wars was a Souls like, I'd probably say it is the best. But one point towards that is that the fighting is less clunky than in a Souls and can be made mostly irrelevant anyway by setting it to easy.

the combat in jedi fallen is not nearly as precise and fluid as bloodborne or sekiro or ds3...

Amount of work that went into this post is just staggering.

I found Mortal Shell to come quite close combatwise, although its missing a lot of aspects such as builds. The tone is similar but not executed in the way the Souls-series does it. Still quite impressive for such a small team.

Not a bad list - nice to see NIoh 2 getting a bit more fanfare just lately. Felt like the game was a huge step-up from Nioh - also has probably the single best character creator I've ever come across.

hey there, not played 2, but played the first one, can you tell me what in your opinion is a huge step up from the first one.

All I remember about the first one, was the combat was amazing, maybe better than bloodborne in my eyes, yes i said it.

but for the rest of it, humm, can you give me three areas where it has had a massive change.

Nioh 2 is pretty amazing. First one is pretty good but 2 is one of the rare sequels that actually vastly improves on everything.

Jedi fallen order isn't a souls like game. It has like 5 different game types mixed into 1. They should have made it more like a from game though. Sekiro with lightsabers

More interesting and varied level design - it's not the easiest thing to spell out, but the first game lacked the kind of smart occlusion that makes Souls level design so masterful. I remember entering the second part of the first level in Nioh, and you could see from the shrine the route you needed to take to get back to open the short cut, so I just ran it, got it open and did the rest of the level from there - kind of on me, but not great level design. Nioh 2's levels are better structured for that kind of organic discovery bringing you out in unexpected places and employ a great deal more verticality. There's also more optional things built in - in the first level there's an optional mini-boss that will open an early short-cut if you can beat him - the second level has several hidden areas and paths with additional loot and return loops.

The revamped skill trees for each weapon are much easier to understand at a glance (granted, they were awful in Nioh) and you've got nearly double the weapons of Nioh's base game. Soul Cores, Yokai Shift, Yokai Skills, the Yokai skill tree and their interplay with your Guardian Spirit(s) add a far more meaningful dimension to your build than Nioh's Living Weapon (which was very set-it-and-forget-it for me).

Really good character creator that you can revisit as often as you like - it's a small thing, but being able to add fresh scares and tattoos to my character during the course of play was a nice role-play experience.

Benevolent Graves bring some much needed balance. It's a hard game and I love hard games, but sometimes, when you're hitting a wall or re-running an area to farm, it's nice to have a little support on-side.

On top of that, there's a huge selection of armour, way more varied enemies and encounters throughout and a new burst counter move which is excellent risk-reward design.

This is a big bit for me, i found 1 overly confusing, especially the skill trees, happy this will be better for me to understand..

Thanks for the reply, it was informative.

I tried Nioh, but I really hated the Mission style of that game so I returned it the next day.

Is Nioh 2 still like that?

I need a Hellpoint dev to confirm why Hellpoint isn't on the list.

On topic though, from the Souls inspired game Nioh is the only one I've truly enjoyed.
All the other ones fall short IMO, they all feel like Souls but with way worse combat, worse loot, worse level design and worse art direction.

Wait, i didn't even know there are enough "Soulslikes" to fill a top 10.

Did they list every games they could find?

HTF is Fallen Order souls like? It was a 3rd person button masher with a soulless ginger.

You know a game is successful when it creates a "genre" for new games that are clearly influenced and inspired by it. I was worried we would see a ton more and it would become oversaturated. Looking at the list I forgot how many there truly are.

i see too much title not taking enough mechanics or using enough other mechanics to be called souls like for me here.

I'll bite. What are your thoughts on Hellpoint? Never seemed to be a game I had to play.

I enjoyed it. The controls are fine, exploration is rewarding (you can jump, so there is some verticality in it), boss fights are fair and the general souls-like combat feel was there. It is no From game of course but i did appreciate it.

Not going to watch the video because of how cringe the term "Soulslike" is, a list would have done just fine but I'm sure there's not enough ad revenue in that.

And I'm sure that none of the games in the video come even close to being as good as any of the "Souls" games.

Disagree it had a lot of souls like features, from the "bonfire" system, to the enemies re spawning, the highish difficulty, and the style of combat that focuses more on parrying.

If you play it like a button masher you're gonna find the game difficult, but I did play it on the second highest difficulty. Albeit it was a hollow shell of a souls game, I really didn't enjoy the combat that much, I thought the lightsaber combat upgrades were extremely boring and uninteresting. The force powers were cool but it needed more. I really enjoyed getting the stim regen force bar upgrade and combo'ing it with the max force push, cheesed my way through the last boss this way.

The story was ass tho, graphics were embarrassing in some places, and performance was shoddy. I had bosses spawn in a T position, frame drops, shitty textures etc...

Disagreed with the list, but it's not horrible. LotF shouldn't even be on the list when there are more deserving games. The Surge 2 is my personal best (HUGE improvement over 1) though I haven't played Nioh 2 yet. I wasn't a fan of the first. Fallen Order was alright. Definitely not second place. Otherwise, not bad.

Code Vein was great and deserves more recognition for doing a lot of unique stuff within the Souls formula.

I really hope Namco gives them a bigger budget for the sequel though.
