I have to admit that. even though Batman is one of my favs, the first few eps are unapologetic elementary school fodder and the animation is subpar at best.

Christmas With the Joker is so bad... you have The Joker escaping Arkham on a rocket Christmas tree. :lol And that's not even the campiest part of the episode. I still like those episodes for what they are, but it's kind of embarrassing watching them with others around.

compared to some of the ones on that list? Yes... Along with Rocko's modern life, Aaaah Real Monsters, and quite a few others people have already mentioned like Doug. But this is a list, and not everyone can be satisfied.

I thought that mad hatter episode was actually pretty good.
And yes, there plenty of bad episodes but there were some really great ones which is the reason gaf is all over Batman: TAS like stds on a hooker.
 
Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop don't belong anywhere near the top ten on any lists unless it's a list for most overrated anime of all time. One didn't know how to tell its own story and the other was far too episodic to be epic in any way shape or form.

What?!? The series premiered with the Feat of Clay episodes. I think you picked out the one episode from the first season that was campy and poorly animated. That series was gold from the start, and was never at any point "elementary school fodder". Totally deserves to be in second place. Should still be in the top ten in a real globally conscious ranking of animated series.

I actually would argue that Looney Tunes doesn't belong in this list though. I would consider it disqualified since the "series" just consists of mostly short films made for theatrical release.
They really were never intended to be aired on television.
 
Good to see samurai jack on there. Not sure what the big deal with family guy is though... Futurama should definitely be higher.

I'm not talking about the whole first season. I'm talking about the first few episodes.

On Leather Wings, Christmas with the Joker, Nothing to Fear, The Last Laugh. I love the Gray Ghost ep and that one's in the first season too.

Batman is episodic too. Do you think that's overrated? Bebop is one of the top ten anime's no question. It's kind of hard to put both japanese and western animation on the same list though.

Futurama is highly over-rated IMO. It doesn't deserve to be in the top ten. I want to see some Venture Bros. in that top ten. That's a show that does nerd humour right, without any ham fisted saccharine love story BS that Furturama has been ruined with.

Seriously. It's the original two Nick seasons that are damn brilliant.

There's a bunch of shit that shouldn't be on that list. Not because they suck, because a good 2/3s of that list sucks. But because they weren't animated series to begin with. Stuff like Looney Toons were theatrical shorts re-packaged for the zillionth time into a TV show.

Episodic is too boring to watch in marathon sessions. You get sick and tired of the characters and their same old schticks. I watched Bebop after the show had been out for at least two or three years and I watched it in a marathon session. Almost didn't get to the end of the session because the damn thing ended up being too boring. Now the movie, that was good and not because of the Bebop characters.

I loved Batman when I was a kid. I would not watch it now even though most of my primary viewing these days is anime.

I'm with you on that one. The stuff slade is calling boring is the stuff that makes the show good. They characters actually have character -- motivations that drive them to do what they do and say what they say. Plot (especially in anime) is mostly contrivance.

Yay for ignoring European animation. The 90s Tintin series is still one of the most faithful adaptions I've ever seen on screen.
 
That's awesome, my 2 favorite animated series took the top 2. Same order too. :D

Not a bad list at all, although I think Animaniacs should be somewhere in the Top 10.
 
No my list at all... The top 10 does nothing for me. Ducktales should have been higher, for example! Also the lack of anime near the top ten is disturbing. I guess in my country that list would have looked much different =)
 
How in the bloody fuck can anybody question Ren & Stimpy's place among the best cartoons?

Maybe it's not your thing, but that doesn't mean it isn't influential and loved by countless others.

So many people seem to think the original R&S show is now somehow bad because of the Adult Cartoon Party episodes.

There shouldn't have been any anime on the list, period. There's just so many and they all have different standards than western-made shows. There is just no contest.

I guess that's true. They could have called it the best cartoons or something^^ That said, all the 90s Disney cartoons need to be in (or closer to) the top ten! >:(
 
Honestly, the fact that Family Guy is #7 and King of the Hill, one of the best sitcoms ever, regardless of animation, is at #27 completely invalidates this list in my mind.

And putting The Simpsons at #1 doesn't even make sense unless you ignore OVER A DECADE of consistently horrible episodes.
 
Kinda weird having compilations of theatrical shorts on there. I mean, technically they were TV shows and that's how a shitload of people were introduced to them, but they were absolutely not created for television.

Samurai Jack needs to be way higher, and Neon Genesis Evangelion needs to get as far away from the top 10 as possible. Family Guy's way too high, but maybe makes the list.

Hell no. But Ren & Stimpy would be near the top, alongside Batman and Simpsons.

IMO, those three shows are the foundations of great 90's animation, which was the best decade for TV animation, imo.

Oh, it's perfectly legitimate. An insanely popular show that people continue to love? Sounds like a good criteria to me.

Having like 8-10 years of greatness kind of makes up for that. The popularity and influence of the show, mixed with the quality it showed for like 10 years? Nothing shocking about that being #1.

First 5 seasons were good, after that it went to shit. It's just fact.

Season 2 through 9 were all pure gold.

Seasons 10 and 11 had their moments, too. I stopped watching after that, because the show stopped being consistently funny, so I lost interest.

But it did have a solid 9 or 10 years.
 
List should be unordered. It'd save on internet hysteria and a legitimate discussion on what should be on the list would hopefully happen without the "It's shit because I dislike popular shows".

Now THAT'S an animated top 100, this IGN list is more "Top 100 rose tinted nostalgia cartoons by everyone in their 20-somethings". I've seen worst lists, though.

..why is there two Star Wars: Clone Wars entries? Is one of them the 3D series? Ugh.

But that's who made the list and that's who they made the list for. Why does everything has to be culturally relevant? Don't get me wrong the ones he named are classic and have inspired many great filmmakers, but this list is just for fun and for a big audience. I do believe most people haven't even heard of Hedgehog in the Fog. That's not to say it doesn't deserve its place, but in this particular list it would not belong.
 
Admit what you all ctrl+f'ed after looking at #1. Mine was Duckman. Can't believe it's only at 48!

Never got into Family Guy so I'm a little peeved it's above Futurama.

As for Simpsons? Well, as great as it can be I'm taking a straw-poll on worst episode ever (in comic-book guy's voice). As a general rule, any episode with a Lisa focus sux. Still deserves to be at the top of the list IMO.
