[IGN] Where Are All the PS5 Games?

At this point for the PS4 you has Bloodbource (not developed by Sony), Horizon and Uncharted 4 but okay.

PS4 second half was simply much stronger. This gen is going to be even stronger with literally every single studio working on PS5 games yet to release.
Hope you're right, but I didn't buy a PS5 to play PS4 bc and third party games I can also play on Series X. Just sayin.

Why are you quoting me? I didn't say a thing about who had the "weakest first-party" and I've been quite critical of Sony's first party efforts of late.

You are too obsessed with haphazardly calling out "GAF experts" and "SonyGAF".
I don’t know why you keep attacking Sony. Leave them alone. Their output is just fine. Not sure I can agree with you thinking they have the weakest first party.

Ass of Can Whooping Ass of Can Whooping , help this troll out.

Strangely, I wouldn't count Ass of Can Whooping Ass of Can Whooping as a member of SonyGAF. Because he is so fully and openly committed that I can do nothing but respect him. Sub-cults like PCGAF, SonyGAF, PhilSpencerGAF, NintendoGAF, etc. are made of people who present themselves as reasonable but can be observed to console war in threads. And that's just tiring.

Well like I said earlier, this isn't so much of a "pipeline issue" it's a "they're not making the games I want" issue.

TLOU2 and GoW Ragnarok are highly critically acclaimed and beloved by fans and have sold very well. Objectively they've done amazing work on both games. The fact that the games didn't float your boat doesn't change that objective truth.
I still argue that they take too long to have too few titles out for a company that sees and markets itself as a dominant platform. But I can live with this statement being seen as an opinion and not as a fact, as you argue. That's fair, I am too lazy to argue against it. I think Sony can and should do better.

Some Sony studios and their games I'm eagerly awaiting:

Naughty Dog's LoU III or some other IP. Will probably be a masterpiece.

Sucker Punch's GoT 2 or new IP. Loved GoT, but there's much room for improvement. Ideally being able to sleep and eat at least even if it isn't a game mechanic. Hopefully more varied missions and maybe minigames this time.

Insomniac is no longer relevant to me as they are so focused on DEI.

Guerilla doesn't really interest me as I've found the Horizon games somewhat lacking, despite being gorgeous. If they create a new IP I'll be there day one probably.

Housemarque. Returnal was very cool so I'm excited to see what their next game will be like.

Bend Studio is working on some AAA live-service game so I'm hesitantly intrigued by whatever new IP they'll cook up.

Bluepoint are making their first own IP so it's going to be interesting what their foray will be. Apparently something in the fantasy genre based on leaks.

So there's plenty to look forward to in the future. I also hope we get surprising new studios with new IPs this gen, whether they are Sony exclusives or not doesn't matter.

They wanted to do better too - then the pandemic smashed their plans apart. Shit happens.

All projects were pushed back a year or so and everything that they had released up until the end of 2022 was supposed to have released by the end of 2021. Only so much you can do under those circumstances yet they were able to ride the rapids of the pandemic just as well or better than any other publisher or platform holder in terms of first party output and platform exclusives.

Their next wave of content should be announced soon and the sheer quantity of games coming in the second half of the gen will be a sight to behold.

Honestly, when you list everything out like that it just drives the point home that there isn't much coming out.

Gaming is in serious need of teh Megaton announcment.

Just looking at the twitter profiles of some of the people replying to that post you can see where the nonsense is coming from.

They want to create this "first party" narrative now even as their first party has become multiplatform. some would like to agree because they're left in the dark about certain first party studios projects but the fact of the matter is that PS has got a lot of first party and third party exclusive games this year and xbox has got very little. Even during the 360 early years people were lambasting PS3 and praising 360 for not having Bioshock or Mass effect when MS first party studios were near nonexistent, even Gears was "2nd party" by their own definition they use now.

Now though they want to pretend that the studio creating the game is what's important because MS has gone shopping, even though there are plenty and more exclusive games to play on PS than xbox and those MS "first party" games are releasing on PS. It's all just twitter nonsense instead of playing the games.

Those are the same people responsible for Hellblade 2 not even charting. And people are supposed to listen to them?

I saw a clip from sacred symbols.

I think from an analysis perspective the Sony's first party situation is worth discussing, and in some aspects is not a sony issue alone.

but what is important to point out is that a competent company see its road map and knows how dry is going to be and then act accordingly to secure content for its platform. in that respect Sony keeps delivering the goods.

and the second half of this year Sony is going to have a steady release of exclusives (with secret deals included).

PS5 will continue to have a strong cadence of marketing beats. they are just lacking a big showcase to shut down this narrative.

Well, there are other Sony exclusive studios too, I mostly just listed the ones that interest me. But yeah, I can't exactly say that I'm thrilled. Also a bit frustrating to not know how many years away the games are. I'm probably more atingle thinking about the next Zelda game on Switch 2 than anything else lol.

Here is a more thorough breakdown I made a while back:

Bored at work, so just pondering further about each studio and their timeline on the next game release. Using an average of 5-6 years for AAA game development here's where I am guessing they stand...

Naughty Dog - last original game release was June 2020. The new IP under Neil would've gone into pre-production around this time. They were also doing pre-production on TLOU Online, but they stopped dev on that. That means we're currently at the 4 year mark from the start of pre-production to today on their next original project. Based off of average turnaround time for most AAA games, it's likely this game would ship either in 2025 or 2026.

Santa Monica Studios - last original game release was November 2022. We also know that a new game under Cory is being made, and the last game shipped under Cory was released in April 2018. We don't know precisely when pre-production would have started, but it could be upwards of 6 years. Based on average AAA turnaround times, this game very well could release next year

Sucker Punch - last original game release was July 2020, with an original expansion released August 2021. It's all but certain that they're working on Ghost of Tsushima 2 and based on average AAA turnaround times this game could release either in 2025 or 2026

Guerrilla Games - last original game release was February 2022, with an original expansion released April 2023. It is highly speculated that there is a Horizon Online game in the works under Simon Larouche. Rumor has it this game could've been in development as early as 2018, which would put us around the 6 year mark now. Based on average AAA turnaround times this game could release next year

Insomniac Games - last original release was October 2023. We know they are working on a Wolverine game that was revealed to the world in late 2021 where it was said to be in very early development. That puts it at 3+ years, so based off of average AAA turnaround times this game could release in 2025 or 2026. It's also within the realm of possibility that a Spider-Man 2 DLC could show up around the 1 year anniversary of Spider-Man 2, if they follow the pattern of many other SIE studios with their tentpole releases.

Bend Studios - last original release was April 2019. We know based off reports that up until early 2021 Bend was working with Naughty Dog on a new Uncharted game, and then they asked to work on their own original project. That puts us at 3+ years for development, and we have no way of knowing how much pre-production was done prior to the studio going full steam ahead on this new IP. If we use the Days Gone release as the upper limit, this game could have been in development anywhere between 3.5 to 5 years. Based on average AAA turnaround times, this game could release 2025 or 2026

Housemarque Studios - last original release was April 2021 with a DLC released March 2022. We know the studio is working on a new IP so based off of average AAA turnaround times this game could release around 2026

Haven Studios - working on their first game, the studio was formed March 2021. Based on average turnaround time this game could release around 2026

Bluepoint - last original release was November 2020. Said to be working on an original title, this game could release in 2025 or 2026

Firewalk - first title releases this August

Media Molecule - last original release was February 2020, with some smaller releases within Dreams. We know they were supporting Dreams and in April 2023 they announced plans to end support for Dreams. We don't know specifically when development began on their next title and how much pre-production work might have been done prior to this announcement so that window could be anywhere been 1 to 4.5 years. This title could release anytime in the next 4 or so years.

Firesprite - last original release was February 2023. It has been said they were working on the Twisted Metal game that was moved over to them, but this game was cancelled around February 2024. It seems they're working on another game that's a dark horror narrative title, and that's been in development since at least September 2021. Based on average turnaround times, this game could release around 2026

Polyphony - last original release was March 2022. Based on average turnaround time, their next title could release around 2027

San Diego Studios - annual release of MLB, so their next title will release next year

Team Asobi - their next title releases this September

Neon Koi - Sony acquired them in August 2022. We have no frame of reference to guess when their title might release

Bungie - last original release was June 2024. They have announced their next title to be Marathon, and this game could release either in 2025 or 2026.

Then beyond that we have the apparent secret team under Jason Blundell, possibly working on the original IP that Deviation was previously working on. Far too many unknowns here to try and guess when their title might release.

By my count that's a potential of upwards of 14 SIE studios that could have an original title ready to release within the next couple of years. Then stack the mountain of XDEV studios on top of that.

What's my point? We gonna be eating REAL good. I keep saying it, but the latter half of this gen is gonna be defined by one word - DENSE.

I too can't wait for the next DEI-Infested slow narratively driven third person action game that has a ton of slow walking segments while the characters vomit exposition and preach.

Oh, can't forget the Always-Online MTX filled GAAS title that has less content than a MP shooter from the 90s, but with endless promise for more content as long as they have enough whales to feed development.

If all these games do release in the 2025 / 2026 with then a dev cycle of another 5/6 years for each studio, then the PS6 (assuming it's released around 2028) would have no first party content from those studios for the first 3 or 4 years.

Incorrect, several studios are multi-project and also do a lot of pre-production work ahead of time while working on one game so that by the time it ships the next game would be close to going into full production, which on average takes about 2 years of dev time for a AAA game (pre-production is 2 to 3 years)

As for what else could drop beyond that and into the start of next gen, I have compiled a lovely list of what games I expect over the next 5.5 years that include first party, XDEV and PS console exclusives. Suffice it to say, they will not be hurting for games

Ok, current list of how I think the rest of the gen could play out. It's not factoring in any data from the Insomniac hack and just goes with what I already had. This is announced content, leaked, rumored, deduced, speculated and includes console exclusives. This is based on the guess that this gen will go until holiday 2028, and it also encompasses an additional 1 year cross-gen period, so up until holiday 2029. This list is what I think will on the lower end of things and in fact there will be FAR FAR FAR more content in reality, but I gotta start somewhere! Before I was breaking it down by year just to spread things out, but fuckit, I'm just going with the Great List of Viv

I admire your optimism.

I think given Sony's expressed their concerns about getting people to move from PS4 to PS5, I think they may want to hold something big back for the PS6 launch. Then again, the lure of cross-gen / multi-platform releases might be too much.

With the info I have posted they can have a PS6 launch for the ages without issue, only some of those bigger games will be cross-gen. The tentpole releases that launch between holiday 2028 to the end of 2029 are likely to remain cross gen with the PS5 (at least for the most part) because they'll want to maximize sales given those titles will have HUGE budgets, and the PS6 will still have a smaller userbase to sell to. There'll be PS6 exclusives of course, but it won't receive a steady cadence of tentpole exclusives until probably around 2030 onwards, IMO.

The cross-gen SIE published content this gen (barring some particular titles) was only supposed to go until the end of 2021 and almost everything afterwards was supposed to be PS5 only afterwards. The only reason it didn't work out that way was due to the pandemic delays causing GT7, HFR and GoW to release in 2022. I fully expect that once the PS6 drops that the cross-gen period will last 1 year, with exceptions that go beyond a year being things like the live service games that need the larger userbase.

I really don't like being so endlessly pessimistic and critical, but Sony has earned it more and more each year since around 2016-2018.

Earned what? Greater critical and commercial success year after year, title after title than they've ever experienced in their history? They're making the games people want to play, evidenced by their games continuing to shatter sales records. Making a snarky and reductionist summary of some of their games is not going to change that.

They're making the games they want to make and the games that tens of millions of people want to play.

They used to. We will see in a generation or two as casual consumers wizen up that a sequel may not follow the same trajectory as its predecessor and be worse in almost every way. Most folks don’t live on the internet and reside in forums to educate themselves on a game prior to release, they pick it up when it releases. Most consumers also don’t like being preached to or have racist nonsense shoved down their throat.

I fully believe that the sales will start to decrease over time, unless Sony makes proper changes. They are fully running on the goodwill garnered from previous entries.

Everyone just talking circles and waiting for someone else to do the research and graph generation to validate personal points x, y, or z.

The last game I actively purchased was over one year ago (June 2023). It has been a dry spell for me to find anything to plop money down for.

With 5-6 year cycles and so few titles getting me to take notice it sure does feel like this video has merit. Strangely Hudo Hudo has made the most relevant point already.

My opinion is that there is a very strong drought of density of titles in any given genre , so that any given player will gravitate to. Not everyone is going to just drop $70 for any and every title release just because it is on PS5. The last game I was genuinely happy to buy (BG3) I bought into EA back in 2020. Imagine going almost 4 years without another game to get excited for. Pleasant surprises for me have been V-rising and Elden Ring.

So they've been on a constant upward trajectory for years, but because you've got a bee in your bonnet over some moronic talking points that you laughably attribute to the greater populace, you foresee doom and gloom some time in the next 10-20 years! A bit full of yourself there, eh?

Honestly, when you list everything out like that it just drives the point home that there isn't much coming out.

Gaming is in serious need of teh Megaton announcment.
You can map out a surprising amount of what's coming. Personally, I still think PS5 will have a banger last year or two. Said that for a while. And if you're into all their existing series, more of that I'm sure is a good thing. For me personally though, it's pretty underwhelming.
  • Media Molecule - I don't care. Never liked any of their games. I guess we'll see what they do.
  • Housemarque - I'm interested. I like most of their older stuff, but didn't like Returnal. It could be easily corrected though, so I'm optimistic.
  • Naughty Dog - I don't like TLOU, so I'm not excited for 3. I'm interested in a new IP.
  • Sucker Punch - Ghost 2 will be good I'm sure. Looking forward to it. I think Ghost got very repetitive by the end though, so hopefully it's actual a large improvement or my excitement will be muted. Still was a great game for the most part.
  • Sony Santa Monica - I don't care about God of War anymore, or a new spin-off. I'm interested in a new Barlog IP though, easily the most promising thing from Sony for me.
  • Bend - Who knows. I liked Days Gone. New IP is always a good thing, but this is supposedly some live service thing so it's really a big question mark. I thought Days Gone got too repetitive by the end of Act 2 so I'm skeptical they can handle live service content. Seems like a bad fit.
  • Haven - Fairgames, not for me.
  • Bungie - Not for me unless it has a single player campaign.
  • Insomniac - Not for me. I might try Wolverine on a deep, deep sale.
  • Guerilla - Horizon is not for me. Not getting part 3.
  • Polyphony - It's super solid but just not for me. I'm fine with Forza on GP.
  • Firewalk - Concord isn't for me.
  • Asobi - I will pick this one up on sale. Looks fun.
  • Bluepoint - Support studio.
So that's 5-6 games potentially for me (virtually all of them unannounced and unknown) covering the end of PS5 and probably several years of PS6. Only one that could honestly have another game in this time frame is probably Asobi if they are having a 3 year turnaround, they could maybe have something else out by 2027 or 2028. Everyone else, this is likely what their output is through 2029 considering most of these aren't even announced, let alone another project after that.

But just as far as the actual scale of studios they have it really doesn't compare to MS anymore. As far as the volume of games they put out, it doesn't compare to Nintendo at all. Nintendo would put out 5 games in 6-8 months. And I don't think it compares to MS either. They are now at about 3-4 games a year from studios they own, not counting Call of Duty. This isn't going to change anytime soon. Sony is just not big enough to match that speed right now, especially if half of these are things I'm not interested in.

Somehow only Sony is affected by the pandemic uh. Meanwhile Switch is seeing first party games almost on a monthly basis
