Pretty sure #1 will either be:

- Final Fantasy VI
- Chrono Trigger
- Planescape: Torment
- Baldur's Gate II

More often than not these lists are a popularity contest. Those games are good, great even (PS:T is my personal #1 game of all time), but they aren't massively popular.
#1 will be Skyrim, FF7 or some Pokemon game.

If they pick Zelda. That'll just spawn a discussion if Zelda is really a RPG.

I doubt they will tho

The new Zelda absolutely is an rpg. You play a character with practically no character and no voice so you're assuming his role and you're doing sidequests and upgrading equipment and have dialogue choices as simple as they are. You collect ingredients to make food that increases your stats. Heck there's even some town building element.

Putting Zelda on the list is being so loose with 'RPG' that you may as well just call it Game at that point.

IGN is known for having very few KH fans so it's kind of surprising KHII even made it on the list.

Is that what makes it an RPG though? There are no experience points, no character stats besides hearts and stamina, there is no real character development other than choosing stamina or hearts after every 4 shrines. I really don't see what should take it from adventure to RPG, Zelda 2 is more like an RPG since you atleast have experience points and some kind of level up system there.

Chrono Cross, the better game than Trigger in 85th :(

I already know the masterpiece Final Fantasy VIII won't feature at all

I can already guess their top 5
1. Witcher 3
2. Zelda BotW
3. Skyrim
4. FF7
5. Mass Effect 2
FF7 will be 1. Probly not far wrong with the rest. It's IGN, series like Persona are too niche to be higher on the list where they deserve to be. The top 5 will also probably have either Demons Souls or Bloodborne in there too.

(assuming they don't consider Souls games JRPGs):

1. Baldur's Gate 2
2. Morrowind
3. FF7
4. Persona 4
5. New Vegas
6. Planescape Torment
7. Chrono Trigger
8. Witcher 3
9. FF3/6 (the one with Kefka)
10. Fallout 2

If this isn't their top 10 list it's wrong. If they include Souls games, it's Dark Souls on #1 and Bloodborne on #4.

Deus Ex for #1 or we riot, right guys?

Fine, I would accept Morrowind also.

Edit: No one else mentioning Deus Ex? Haven't seen this lack of taste since an IGN list thread Media Create thread.

I have never played a RPG to completion.
I started FF VII not long after it came out and have also tried KOTOR, Pokemon Red/Blue and Skies of Arcadia but have never enjoyed the gameplay enough to continue playing past the first few hours.

I'll keep an eye on this as I'm interested in trying to play a RPG again - currently considering Horizon Zero Dawn (is that game a RPG?)

I would consider it an RPG. The label means damn little these days though as the genre has been diluted beyond the level of recognition by this point. Drawing a line at which a game is an RPG is entirely arbitrary. You can level up, you can equip stuff, there are quest, it's an RPG.

It's almost as if the point of sites posting lists like this is to get people riled up and posting on their site.

Not that the list bothers me, but DAI is ass. And EQ deserves to be close to the top.

Those are some popular picks right there. Far more in line with my own top 10 than anything IGN is likely to end up with.

KH2 being so low is nuts. Isn't it usually waaay higher?

Well either way it hardly matters, it's not like these lists are ever good. Subbing for inevitable train wreck.

It makes sense when you consider IGN's rep for having barely any KH fans/general disinterest in the series.

When people argue over placement on Top whatever lists, it always makes me feel like I'm trapped in 2006. There's thousands of RPGs that exist, all that matters is that they put them ON the list, placement is irrelevant.

I find it really difficult to make top 10s of anything, I can say that only one of those games would even make it into my 100 though :p
