ignxbox: Doom 3 Review

I just picked it up a Gamestop; and played it until I ran into the first demons. Compared to a high-end PC, the graphics stack up fairly well. Some of the lighting effects aren't as good- big surprise; but overall a good looking game so far.

Intentional. I used to make Doom maps. There are no "co-op" or "deathmatch" items, only "multiplayer" items.

Never knew that, always thought the pc co-op had the same weapon placement as single player.

It has been a while since I played it though :), I'm absolutely love doom 1 and 2 on the xbox, still hardly touched doom 3!

is doom1 and doom2 also in the standard edition or only in the special edition?

need to know this before i buy

You don't seem to get it--go ahead and fire it up. I HAVE a computer that approaches the Xbox's specs (GeForce 4 ti 4400, 768 megs of ram, Athlon 1600+ xp ) that I'm currently typing this post on (my 'net' pc). I have issues with some of those benchmark tests-- have doom 3 on it, for home-lan deathmatches and such. the game will only run in 640 x 480, at about 15 fps, with most of the advanced shading turned off, at the lowest texture quality. On my HDTV, D3 on the xbox is nearly--nearly comparable to a computer running the game at medium settings. The textures look a bit better in most areas, the realtime cinematics have no stutters and retain much of their visual impact, and the framerate stays around 30 most of the time. To say nothing of the fact the Xbox version loads a hell of a lot faster at startup and between stages. It's certainly not a replacement for the high-quality PC version, but for those people who can only play the Xbox version, they aren't missing a damn thing.

Huh? I do get it. Doom 3 isn't hardly doing anything above Direct X 7 specs at all. Therefore that is why I'm saying the Xbox is able to pull this game off fairly well.

I haven't even talked about the game yet. If I would I will tell you that Doom 3 is fun, but it feels limited. Co-op mode is nice, but the fact of the matter is that the gameplay in Doom 3 gets stale about 6-7 hours in. The game goes from tense to boring because the same pop out of the closet-a-thon bullshit keeps on occuring. Decent game if you can stay into it though. Hell, I may still double dip on this game because it sounds like some of the boring stuff from the PC version has been cut and co-op mode with the older Doom games sounds inticing.

This game is getting overrated because of how decent the Xbox version is. But at least this review is a little easier to swallow. Moreso than that XBN/1up review which is one of the worst written reviews of all time.

I own the PC version and naturally own the old Dooms, but I bought the Xbox Doom 3 LE (along with Resurrection of Evil) today. The Xbox LE is super nice for any Doom fan. You get online Co-Op, all three Doom games, and the great G4 Icons on id in addition to other extras.

good game so far, the graphics are especially nice. but damn the fucking online Deathmatch multiplayer was laggy as fuck. and the interface to setup deathmatch isn't that great.

it takes about 15 seconds to find a match, then you click on join, then it takes another 15 seconds to tell you the match is no longer there. hopefully they get that part straightened out.

p.s. the original dooms are on the same disk. i played doom 2 for a bit. man i remember the graphics being a lot better. but what can you do, still a classic

are the graphics worse in co-op? that's the only mode I played, but when you kill stuff, it's like their skeleton pops out and all their skin disappears, looked kind of odd.

played co-op last night, was a blast...

although the only co-op i saw for Doom II and ultimate was split screen.

I was told that those 2 were on xbox live co-op as well but i'm starting to think i was told wrong.

anyone know for sure?

Offline only.

It runs better than I saw it run on any PC (though the textures are low-res, and it's really obvious in the hand textures).

:lol

I must have just been imagining my PC running doom 3 at High Quality 1280x1024, absolute rock solid 60 fps, and in all the original PC levels without anything toned down. My Audigy 2 ZS and Klipsch 5.1s sounding awesome was clearly a figment of my imagination as well.

My PC is better than average, but even then a modest PC with a 9600 Pro to a 6600 GT easily goes beyond Xbox.

And before someone again says Xbox is more efficient...it is. I'm not arguing against that at all. When you strip down the game and design it specifically for a static piece of hardware, of course it's going to be more efficient.

Yes, you must have. That isn't possible. There is NO PC on the market that can run Doom 3 at a ROCK SOLID 60 fps.

Just out of curiousity, what are your specs?

Abit IC7 MAX 3
P4 Northwood C 3.0 GHz OCed to 3.4 Ghz
2048 MB of PC3500 RAM
BFG 6800 Ultra OC
Audigy 2 ZS

Maybe it dips down a little but it certainly is way higher than 30 fps, and consistently.

That's all I needed to hear...

I'm using a 3.6 GHz P4 + 6800 + 1gb and I also pull 60 fps the vast majority of the time, but it is NOT 100% rock solid. There are drops here and there. Just being picky. :P

You teh_pwn'ed everyone. Congrats.

I'm trying to decide between this and Unreal Championship 2 as filler around Phantom Dust and Jade Empire, hmm.

However, the fact that I don't know any game playing folks around here anymore for the older Dooms, in conjunction with the fact that no one at GAF seems to be interested in setting up online co-oping for D3 isn't very enticing.

I would like to play the older Dooms finally, however, and finally sit down and play through D3 though. co-op or not.

You seem a bit firm in your stance on Doom 3 running poorly. WHY?

If you are looking forward to some nice competitive online play go with Unreal Championship 2. It'll smash Doom 3's pathetic competitive multiplayer play into the ground.

It doesn't look like the competitive aspect of Doom III multiplayer was addressed at all in the xbox version. The PC version is extremely lackluster online with the limited number of maps and users.

Yeah, yeah. I had that much figured. Just trying to pick between the meat of the two games.

Poor, broke ass me, oi, shouldn't have bought a PSP. Owning three consoles and two handhelds suck. I just need to start cleaving systems by next gen.

...because I believe PC gamers throw around the idea of a "rock solid" 60 fps a bit too much when I know it isn't possible in certain games. There is no PC available that can run Doom 3 at a perfect 60 fps + v-sync in the highest detail settings (or even slightly below that).

Just something that has always bugged me...

Don't you have UT 2004 for the PC? UC2 sounds decent but if you have UT2004 for the PC I see no major reason to get UC2.

I'd just stick with Jade Empire. The other games will be just filler.

I'm not particularly interested in UC2, but I believe it is entirely different game (unlike UC1, which was just UT2003 for the XBOX). UT2004 and UC2 do not seem to share much of anything...

UC2 is completely different from UT2k4. It was built from the ground up to be a Xbox game. 40 unique maps, melee combat, third person mode, etc.

You teh_pwn'ed everyone. Congrats.

I wasn't trying to come off as an ass, but it is much deserved for someone that believes the Xbox version looks better than any PC running it.

dark, I think there are PCs that can handle it easily. There's dual GPU 6800 Ultras, and Doom 3 will take advantage of dual processor systems. I dunno if there's an SLI + dual processor mobo, but surely a dual core 6800 Ultra in SLI can do it.

um, the xbox version looks better than doom 3 does on my PC. my PC is appox. 5 years old. what say you now?

I HAVE A DUAL K5R4X2 PROCESSING MODULATOR WITH 8 GB RAM PLUS A FRONTSIDE 8402K CACHE GENERATOR AND MY FLUCTUATOR OVERCLOCKS THE 9GHZ PROCESSING BUS BY A QUANTITIATIVE AMOUNT OF X TO THE 9TH POWER! YOU LOSE XBOX

but, in other news, i played more of doom 3 online deathmatch and it is actually pretty fun. i personally hosted 4 player deathmatch and there was no lag at all. it's no halo 2 but it is a nice diversion. i haven't played any co-op online yet but in due time i will. i like the single player a lot

I think I'll just nab D3 on the cheap later on. I really do wanna try some online co-op eventually, though. In something that isn't a dipstick Tom Clancy game at least, running on Ubi Soft's lowest bidder network code.

And yeah, UC2 is crazy different. I'm really interested in it, but not many other folks seem to be, doh.

How the hell is your PC relevant? Mine was relevant because it negated his belief by example.

The guy made the claim that the xbox version looked better than any PC he saw running it. Giving that kind of information is just blantant fanboyism because he'd have to have seen only slow PCs running it.

And such a PC to run it smoothly can be made, tho there may be the occassionaly once in every 15 minutes slight drop below 60. In that case I don't think any game qualifies as a solid 60fps.

You mean you weren't trying to come off like teh_ass :lol

Played a bit of Doom 3 co-op earlier and I was immediately reminded of all the stuff I didn't care about in this game. Claustrophobia, lackluster impact from weapons, backtracking, and logs(now with bonus loading!). Had a really choppy go with it too, but it coulda been the host connection.

It looks and sounds FANTASTIC however, and there is something to be said about playing this game in the palm of your hand with full-on rumble. Extremely faithful and competent portjob.

Doom1/2 really surprised me moreso though. Beyond the dated visuals and strange momentum-sliding due to how fast you run about, they are pretty excellent on the box. I actually look forward to co-op. The music is awesome too, not like that junk in DW5.

Oh and the ladder animations in co-op :lol :lol :lol :lol

Ugh, the controls on original DOOM are way to sensetive. It feels like you're sliding.

both play perfect imho. Then again I was always one of those psycho Doom players :lol

Too bad i played on 3rd difficulty and got pwned on the 2nd level of doom 2 today ;(

The collector's edition is very well done on the Xbox. Screw the haters. If you don't like Doom 3. Find a thread on a game you like. Jebus. Idiots.

By the way..doom3 on the xbox rocks hard and looks pretty damn good compared to any high end pc..including mine which drawfs mr cool daddy teh_pwn's :lol

The PCs you had taken a look at must have been pretty awful. Both of my PCs run the game very well at the highest detail levels (with the higher-end of the two pulling 60 fps a good majority of the time). There is no question that it looks and runs much better than the XBOX version.

Yooooouuuu raaaang?? :D

Doom 3 may not blow away the PC game running on a much more powerful system, but it's one of the most visually impressive console games on the market right now.

Personally, I honestly prefer Doom 3's "look" on the PC to other FPSs. The Source Engine looks fantastic, but everything looks so dull and flat. The Hell levels in Doom 3 are jaw dropping.

Can anyone confirm is the XBOX version has a brightness/contrast setting in-game? All dark games need to do this, I can't play this on the big screen without it.

not sure why this game got shit on, its awesome so far. and i dont mind the darkness or using the flashlight i think it sets a great mood for the game.

one question, how the hell do i watch those video disks i keep picking up?

can't you do it on your TV?

you have to use the in game PDA and click on the files.

dont remember what button is the PDA... it's either black or back or something

Front projectors are more of a pain for this. Usually adjusting brightness washes the picture out too much and instead of being dark, it's grey. SC:CT has this setting and it works very well, so I'm banking on Doom 3 having the in-game adjustment as well.

White, IIRC.

The load from PDA back to gameplay is a bit annoying though. Used to how quick it was on the PC.

Does anyone know if you can listen to the PDA audio files while you play like you could on the PC version?
