Improved Switch 1 games on Switch 2

Splatoon 3 runs a lot more smoothly. The lobby would chug loading in. Now it is stable. The netcode is still garbage though.

Jurassic World Evolution is marked as switch 2 compatible but in game is broken.

Colours are all broken, looks like a 16bit game. Menus and UI are all fine thought & performance is better.

Has anyone tested Binding of Isaac? I remember bosses that had a large number of bullets tended to drop some frames.

Anyone tried Echoes of Wisdom or LA yet? I heard they patched it but I want to make sure those 60 to 30 FPS drops were fixed.

Indeed. Xeno 3 is able to run 60 fps on a modded overclocked original switch too.

a lot of games can. especially on the the OLED Switch, which is basically a Pro model whose potential was never used.

even Breath of the Wild can run at 60fps on an overclocked OLED.

lots of potential for official patches now

I'm hoping for a bayo 3 patch. Apparently it's better already but the game could really use a native res boost.

Playing Trails from Zero on the Switch 2 feels much better than it did on the Switch 1. The text and character portraits in particular look MUCH sharper. I think the game is actually running full 1080p in handheld mode, whereas it was 720p before (or maybe 1080p downsampled to 720p?).

Game runs at a solid 60fps, but it also did on the Switch 1. It's a PSP game after all lol

there are some Switch 1 games that ran at 1080p in handheld mode, which is now actually useful on Switch 2.
so this could be a game like that.

it is a positive surprise to me that these games actually display the full 1080p image I must say, as I would have expected them to still only display a 720p image that was downsampled from the 1080p internal res.

I'm tempted by a lot of these games that I missed, but like barely any of them are on sale (most are still $60) and I kinda have enough to play ATM. Stoked for more patches for 60 FPS to come though but I gotta stay disciplined at this time. Obviously we all spent a ton on this new machine with expensive accessories.

How do switch 1 games look on the switch 2 1080p handheld screen?
I know they are stretched, but how bad is it?

How do 480p games thinking Xenoblade 2 (it was already a blurry mess on switch) look.
How about pixel games that are 720p do they scale ok?
Do games with shifting resolution keep a solid 1080p if not locked?

Does the switch 2 do anything to pretty up the picture?
What are the odds of nintendo ever doing anything to allow docked resolution for handheld.

I was not able to score a switch 2, as I wasn't lucky enough to get an email from Nintendo, and don't care about Mario Kart, I didn't try to pre-order anywhere. I probably won't get one until I can get one online or locally without dealing with bs. So probably 2 years from now (if ps5 was anything to go on). they are all out of stock around me (to counter the "they are available everywhere jerks. .... same people said the same during ps5 launch, bs...)

That being what it is. I know I will need to get one eventually, but is it really worth it for switch 1 games, does it make them worse. I have an oled model, and love it. I just know it won't last forever. Normally I would think about just buying another oled, but batteries can die just from not using them apparently.

Thoughts, experiences.

OG Switch 1 or the OLED Switch 1?

Was playing it previously on the OLED Switch 1, and it looks better on Switch 2.

Switch 1 games running on the Switch 2 look, at a bare minimum, the same as they do on the Switch 1. The overwhelming majority of games look 100% identical unless they are specifically patched. There are a few exceptions, games mentioned in this thread. Games like Xenoblade 2 that looked like shit on Switch 1, still look like shit on Switch 2, unfortunately. Games that had dynamic / shifting resolution on Switch 1 will see the most benefit on Switch 2, and games like Hyrule Warriors that struggled on the old hardware run pretty decently on Switch 2 as a result, but again these are the exceptions, not the rule. The Switch 2 doesn't do any sort of post-processing or upscaling of Switch 1 games.

As for Nintendo allowing docked resolution of Switch 1 games in handheld mode, I wouldn't hold my breath. While that would be the obvious way to "upgrade" most Switch 1 games for handheld players, it'd come with a massive amount of QA on the Nintendo side of things. I think if they had planned on doing this, they would have done it at launch - but maybe we'll be surprised.

While the backwards compatibility improvements are nice, it's really annoying how few official patches there are so far.

Hopefully if the console sells well, more publishers will go back and do updates to take advantage of the hardware.

Would love to see an arkham patch for resolution but dont think it will ever happen

Damn, it actually runs now.

The question is, who wants to play this

lots of 1st party are $40 right now on Woot! ...at least for the US.

Anyone gave XCX: DE a try? I haven't played it on Switch but doing so right now on Switch 2
There is no upgrade patch for any XC games. They might stick closer to 30 fps on average, do not expect anything more unless Monolithsoft patches them. I hope these patches are free and not 10$.

I'm snapping up physical Switch games like they're going out of style, since they're going to be HIGHLY sought after in the not too distant future.

Any videos on Mudrunner 1? If it looks acceptable on Switch 2 then it's an amazing upgrade.
From what I played its a lot smoother, looks the same.

Trilobit Trilobit update, runs amazing, 60FPS locked. Didn't even know it was an unlocked FPS 😂 but so much better on switch 2. Only down side is the draw distance is the same so stuff pops in now you can drive about faster. (Feeling)

I just snagged MvC collection after I saw this cause I've been on the fence and 25$ sale at target had a gift card. I know it has no improvements, but I used to love those fighters back in the day and I started thinking that S1 carts are going to be valuable.

I'm guessing things like Joycon mouse functionality don't just natively work - ie Metroid Prime Remastered or Skyrim would require some kind of patch is that right?

skyrim runs a bit better and looks sharper plus loads faster. All around a better game with no patches. Would be nice for a real update but.... Microsoft now.

doesn't work by default no. it needs to be patched in.

I am not sure if games that previously had mouse support (very rare but they exist) automatically support the joycon mouse sensor... I assume no, but I'm not sure.

Damn, most impressed with Zelda. Big upgrade on this one.
Texture work is amazing, they clearly didn't just bumped resolution and frame rate, most probably re-imported (probably re-exported as well) all textures, some terrain textures that looked blurry in Switch 1 ended up being not because they stretched them but because that's how they are, just different rock designs lol.

Also I'm noticing the lighting/shadows got improved but not changed for another model, like they just raised the sampling or something like that.

Wow. Looks like some textures were significantly reworked entirely.

Wow. Looks like some textures were significantly reworked entirely.
Nintendo work their material using procedural methods like everyone else in the industry, they literally have infinite resolution, if anything, they just rebaked the textures in higher resolution or maybe (most probably) they had high resolution texture files and just reduced the size for each case (Switch og release and Switch 2 Edition).

I honestly think this is something an emulator can't give me unless we get some real time texture upsampling using ML or someone gets to do the job for free of upscaling all the textures manually.

The Splatoon 3 enhancement patch for Switch 2 is out now (game version 10.0.0). Huge difference while in the city, looks to be a locked 60fps everywhere now, and the game looks considerably sharper. Button remapping for the pro controller works too for GL/GR now.

The following updates have been made when playing the game on Nintendo Switch 2:

  • Made it so that the screen displays in more detail.
  • Made on-screen movement smoother in the following areas.
Splatsville, Inkopolis, Inkopolis Square, Grand Festival Grounds

  • In Salmon Run, smoothed Salmonid animations even when there's a large number of Salmonids in the stage.
  • Smoothed animations for certain characters, such as jellyfish.
  • Changed the animation that displays in the bottom right of the screen when switching scenes.
  • Increased the resolution of images stored in the Nintendo Switch 2 Album when screens are captured using Photo Mode or the Capture Button on the controller.
  • The following updates have been made when playing the game on Nintendo Switch: Made it so that certain elements outside the stage and unrelated to battle do not display when battling in Splat Zones/Tower Control/Rainmaker/Clam Blitz modes.
This change is to reduce differences in game operation speed as much as possible when compared with Nintendo Switch 2.

In Recon Mode, all elements will display as they have up to this point.

All other changes below apply to both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.

Changes to Multiplayer

  • Added a new stage, Urchin Underpass.
  • Added 30 new weapons as part of the Splatlands Collection - Barazushi / Emberz.
These weapons will be available in the shops after applying the update.

I mean this is an official remaster, not a free patch at the end so yeah I would hope to see better textures/shadows/lighting.

Like Kirby too (which I am looking forward to)

Super Mario Odyssey looks so stunning on Switch 2 when connected to my LG C3 OLED TV that it is the game I've been (re)playing the most by far (30+ hours!) since I got the console last week. I was enjoying that classic so much that I didn't get around to actually playing Mario Kart World until the third day after I got my Switch 2 and then it was only for a couple of hours before I went back to Odyssey. Image quality is so much better now that it looks like a new game and although it still suffers from some aliasing, it is far less distracting than before. Better still this update was totally free.

I also got to enjoy Zelda: Link's Awakening along with Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (which I picked up from Amazon last week) for the first time after having to stop playing it on Switch due to the horrid 30 to 60 to 30 fps framerate. Now it and Echoes of Wisdom play exactly how I was expecting them to. Also, both these updates were free.

I really hope that Nintendo go through all their back catalogue and offer enhancement patches for their games, both free and paid. I'd love to see Pikmin 4 and Yoshi's Crafted World get Switch 2 patches along with all the Xenoblade Chronicles games and Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Not really the same but my Internet has... Switched. Renewed interest if they perform better, especially JRPGs and some action.

How are Star Ocean, DQ3, Suikoden, Diofield, unicorn overlord. I picked up one or two but held off until getting on a steam sale. Sure, just an RPG but performance is performance.

WRC 10 loads way faster on S2. Almost instantly between menus and stages starting. I may be mistaken but it also seems to run better, which makes it easier to control…although the brutal LOD pop-in on stuff like shadows and trees remains the same as on S1.

Splatoon 3 looks great now with today's update, 4K in almost all modes (looks like dynamic res or 1440p in the hubs, which are now at 60 FPS instead of 30).

Comparisons :

Some gameplay (MP, campaign, expansion) :
