makes it sound more like they are trying to streamline their business strategies between their different divisions. I dunno know how anyone could think they are considering cutting their game division when they specifically mention Nintendo as their competition. :lol

I didn't know they did the D3x sensor too, ace (I stopped following where chips were coming from and the # of megapixels on them a couple of years ago after deciding it was a stupid argument by-and-large). I like their stuff - I had a 35mm Minolta and think their chips and the collaboration with Zeiss is great, it just wouldn't surprise me that *if* "sacred cow cuts" come they'd take a good look at the operation. Moreso than anything tied to 'content'.
 
Blah, all this recession bs and doom and gloom articles are making me sick. Yeah, companies are having a tough time right now but the Playstation division will be fine.

Pronouns are tricky, aren't they? The first "they" I bolded refers to Sony and the second "they" refers to a Credit Suisse analyst quoted in the article. Credit Suisse obviously sees Nintendo as Sony's competition at the moment, which might inform us about what Credit Suisse thinks Sony should do but tells us nothing whatsoever about Sony's internal deliberations.

They should go to town on their first party studios. Too many insane projects.

That being said they'd be crazy to let go of SCEI, doesn't make much sense at all.

Good chance of several of the semiconductor subsidiaries being closed down. Shiroshi Semiconductor would be a prime candidate, Nichia hold the market.

Anyway all of this will eventually lead to the Sony-Matsushita marriage. Sony and Panasonic will end up as one company sooner or later. Pioneer will eventually be absorbed into Panasonic too. Only way to compete with Samsung's dirt cheap labour.

Yes. The writing is on the wall as far as I'm concerned. The more interesting question is what happens to the Playstation branding, assets, and IP when this happens.
Scenario 1:
Microsoft would love to call their systems Playstation in some markets and would also love to have PS2 and PS1 backwards compatibility as a selling point in future systems. Hell, they could probably add PS1 to the 360 in software in as little as a few months. They could probably convince a few publishers to port some more PS3 properties (example: MGS4) to the 360. Additionally, I could see them getting a lot of the more unique PSP games ported as XBLA experiences.

Scenario 2:
Some other company that would like to make a profit out of the PS2 and PS1 businesses.

Scenario 3:
SCE drops the majority of their activities and refocuses on the PS2 - possibly releasing a beefed up PS2 as a direct competitor to the Wii. The biggest problem with this is that they have contracts with a lot of other publishers and development houses relating to the PS3 that might be defaulted upon by this type of action.

Scenario 4:
Nintendo. Grudge-fucking. More layers to the Virtual Console in future iterations.

Is it a requirement at Kotaku to fail at basic English grammar?

Matsushita have probably been eyeing up Pioneer for a while now to compliment their Technics brand.
 
I'll just say what I said in the OP thread - Whatever happens, I hope their software devs won't be hit too hard. I love many of their games, and love the kind of budget and attention they're getting.

As for the hardware divisions, those are just vessels in which software is delivered, so at the end of the day, it doesn't matter much what happens to them. If the times are tough for hardware, they should consider some kind of joint venture with MS or making some kind of open chipset with other CE manufacturers for the future console.

But Sony won the HD format war, and the PS3 is a big player in holding that market and keeping it moving. I can't really see why Sony would shut down a division that basically created a different division, thanks to PS3 initially moving as the main Blu-Ray player.

It's a discussion about Sony itself that has been going on for quite some time. NO it's not necessarily centered on the gaming division, just inefficiencies in general.

YES it will most likely postpone any drastic price cuts to the PS3.

/thread can be a joke. Also, workforce reduction by attrition and non-renewal of contracts has been speculated as the form that a majority of those layoffs might take. That's different than pink-slipping a bunch of employees.

Yep, the crossovers are everywhere,

As has been mentioned Sharp took a controlling stake in Pioneer, however Sharp will sell up if Matsushita come, it's just the way things work amongst the Japanese CEs.

A lot of the newer restructuring might involve carve-out's and spin-off's. Sony Corporation would keep majority ownership. Several divisions are prime candidates for spin-off's Sony Pictures chief amongst them, this one has been rumoured as a possibility for years.

They could possibly spin-off SCEI too. That would be a drastic measure.
 
One of the things to top off last years start would be a major publisher selling off some Ip, houses and assets to another. I doubt it will happen at this stage though. At least I hope anyway, Sony has some of the best dev houses etc and they work well under them.

Ah, my bad. Guess I didn't read it closely enough. One analyst predicts they might cut some divisions and people jump to the conclusion that the gaming division is doomed. Then another analyst predicts that Sony needs to restructure in order to compete with Nintendo and everyone ignores it?

Sounds like selective interpretation to me...

It's employees who work in a division that is considered redundant being made redundant vs. people who quit, who are fired, or who have a contract with an end date not getting renewed.

It's more than just semantics.

The Playstation brands is as good as dead, I own a PS3. When I buy a console the company tends to die (I've owned TurboGraphix 16, Saturn, Dreamcast, Jaguar....)

RIP PS3

I have a 360 and Wii also, so those companies are fucked too :P

really some times i think people reporting these things are like 4 days new to console gaming or something.

playstation has been propping up sony since it's been in exsitance, after walkman lost it's cred it's been THE brand. PS3 has been the driver behind their tv's, blu-ray ... and now sony are supposdly going to cut the bottom out from under it.

More good games = money. I seriously doubt any division will be cut or dramatically changed. It's probably just streamlining by merging studios and just getting rid of excess staff. Over the past years, companies could afford to have lots of uneeded staff (eg. too many secretaries, too many cleaners etc.) but not now.

Many - myself included - doubt that the PS3 will have a profitable 'phase' anytime soon. If the current unprofitable 'phase' continues, it could be more trouble keeping it around than it's worth.

Also, with confidence shaken in the PlayStation 3's future as a financially viable platform, isn't it possible that third-party publishers could begin to shift resources away from the PS3? Could we see more Xbox 360 exclusives as a byproduct of PS3 indifference?

If third-party support wanes, I don't believe that Sony's first-party development could make up for that shortfall and the PS3 would simply fade away. Sure, it's a "perfect storm" scenario, but I don't think it can be discounted as a ridiculous scenario.
