Increased Corporate advertising in games next gen?!?

Tenacious-V

Thinks his PR is better than yours.
With the seeming continuous boom in popularity of consoles as generations go by and the increase in development costs for new games, what's the likelyhood of corporations to start advertising products in games?? This would definitely give their products more recognition as more and more people are playing on consoles.

There have been games already with advertisements in them, but what's the likelyhood of games next gen getting more and more advertisements from companies. Like Coca Cola, Pepsi, McDicks, Wal-Mart, Target, and the list goes on and on. We all know cost of development of software is getting to be rediculously high, this would definitely be a way of lowering costs. Large corporations could pay royalties to game studios/publishers on a per game basis to incorporate some advertising of their products into their games. Like food, clothing, hair products, or whatever else.

Would you guys care? I personally wouldn't want this to happen anymore than it already has (or to a grander scale) as I hate the brainwashing companies do to sell their products in the media on TV, paper, etc. already. Would it turn you off to games, or would it depend on the game? Something like GTA I could see utilizing it for more realism, but I don't really think I want it to happen.

Yeah, because its so damn expensive right now...
paying ~$13 a month for a game is pretty expensive I'd say. I won't mind some Coca-cola signs around WoW if that means I could pay less.

It'll make game production more affordable for publishers, but don't count on them passing the savings on. They'll be happy to pocket the extra profits. Either way, more advertising will cause me to avoid the high-budget productions that include it.

Maybe in other games in realistic modern settings, but I'd rather not see it in GTA, given how well that series utilizes fake ads for satire of real-world brands/corporations/ads.

I was just using GTA as an example of a type of game which may be suited for it, not that I want it. Personally I don't want it to increase at all. We get enough saturation of ADs everywhere we go already, I don't want it to become more prominent in games. The likelyhood of advertising in high budget games is more and more likely though, which IMO blows....

I wouldn't mind seeing ads during Loading times if that meant lower prices.

It better mean lower prices though and not just all end up in Publisher pockets (I'm looking at you EA).
