Just got mine. Is there a comprehensive list of fixes? I did most things in the manual, got the new drivers and bios, changed bios settings a bit to increase CPU and RAM, downloaded hialgo switch to reduce ingame resolutions (per lowspecgamer), got some steam command line options to make games work at lower res, downloaded some software to reduce CPU throttling. Anything else?
Hyper Light Drifter, Ori and Salt and Sanctuary work great. I'm going to try DS2:SOTFS when I get my USB memory in the mail. I wonder if I can run DS3 at potato settings (probably not). I tried Deadly Premonition but it won't boot. The launcher does just nothing and the executable gives me a PhysX not installed error despite me having installed it.
The google doc on dingoonity says Alien Isolation works so that will be interesting to try. Anyway, comprehensive list of fixes would be great like I said. I followed the reddit FAQ as well.

Just over the past 12 or so hours I've started seriously considering purchasing a GPD Win. Being able to make a dent in my Steam visual novel backlog while playing in bed is extremely appealing but I'm not sure if I'd be better served with something like the Chuwi Hi8.

I think the question is whether you'd like something truly portable (I.E. pocketable) and would like to play non-VN games as well (has built-in gamepad, essentially).

With the velcro the GPD Win fits and holds great in this grip. I played a few hours of Rocket League and Owlboy.
eMMC drive changed from Samsung CGND3R to Toshiba 064G70.
Honestly its not something I'd think would effect most people in their day to day usage and the benefits of the revised model outweigh that.
Ran some quick tests on the USB port.
The basic setup of the test without a load applied.
5.08V.
.23A load applied, voltage dipped to 5.01V
Half amp load applied, voltage at 4.97V.
One amp load applied, Voltage drops to 4.9V.
1.2A load applied, voltage plummets to 4.74V.
1.5A load was even worse and for the instant I applied 2A voltage plunged well below 4V, I didn't see the exact numbers but I have no desire to abuse my device again to see what exactly it was.
Long story short, I'd say don't use anything in that'll draw more than one amp.
The USB port will try to deliver the current needed voltage be damned.
It can and will deliver 2A but its not gonna be anywhere near 5V.
That port has no factory imposed limitations on it and will not prevent owners from trying to power something it can't.
Thanks for the heads up. My hand would cramp on long sessions, and this grip is about $9 in Japan (and I can probably get velcro from the dollar store here). I assume this block the air and speakers tho? Does your unit get much hotter?

Both are equally appealing to me, to be honest. While I have an ever-growing back catalog of VNs, I'd also love to play games like Xanadu Next and Dragon Age: Origins in bed.
I finally settled on the GPD Win instead of a tablet. Can't wait to play around with it.

I put two vertical velcro strips on the GPD's backing, and those cause the unit to be raised a bit (not flush with the grip plastic), so the speaker is not completely muffled. The intake and exhaust are not blocked at all given that they are on the sides of the unit.
I think this should work out well for you. With the mouse emulation and portability it's pretty much perfect for VNs. Both Xanadu and DA:O seem to be low enough spec for this to play reliably.

Any chance for pics of the Win with the grip? Does it make reaching for the analog sticks harder?

The processor in these things run hot, my windows tablet has the same and they cook when under moderate load.

I can send some pics when I get home from work. You are right about reaching for the sticks, that is the biggest downside to this. Due to the placement near the center for the sticks, they are bit hard to reach when using a grip.

That's excellent to hear. Seems like the perfect little machine to crawl in bed and read with.
What's the battery life been like for visual novels, in your experience? I've read that the GPD Win can get about 3 or so hours on more graphically intensive games.

Depends on the game, but I've had times where I've played a VN for an hour and a half and the battery's only gone down 10-15%.

For the rpg maker type games, I am getting about 5 hours from full until the 10% warning. I haven't had any issues at all myself. I put in a few heavier games just to see how they ran, but not played them enough to judge battery life.

I do have to say these do make great shruiken having so many spares and they won't poke someones eye out.
Some more comparisons.
The conductive pads on both old and new are the same height and have the same amount of travel, it was a bit hard to measure but I'm pretty sure both have .050/1.27MM of travel.
Silicone is a different color but both feel the same.
The pad overall is the same thickness with one noticeable difference, there is a sort of wall around the edges of the pad, that "wall" is much higher on the new version.
Pushing the nubs feels identical, there may be differences in how much force it takes to depress it but if it does I don't have the sensitivity to feel it.
There is one noticeable difference when pushing on the new pad.
On the new version when you press a nub the entire pad flexes and warps.
You can also see how much thicker the walls are around the edges.
The only other thing I can notice different is how they were manufactured.
Its not noticeable unless under direct light but the old pads have markings that remind me of parts made with a cnc machine whereas the new pads have no marks of any kind.
The Win's pads are very similar to those used in Playstation controllers, unlikely but I don't suppose anyone happens to have any pads used for one lying around that they can set on a flat surface and push a nub to see if it stays flat or warps like the new pads?

How are Windows-based game emulators on this thing? Accuracy based ones, like Mednafen and Mupen - I've got (appropriately?) low expectations for PCSX2 and Dolphin, but it would be nice to play stuff earlier well, along with some old PC games and the like.
I'm mostly torn between this or the XD at the moment. How bad is the temperature, too? I know people have been mentioning it getting pretty damn hot, but is it uncomfortable/concerning or just warmer than a more polished handheld?

Latest Dolphin Ishiiruka version and opening the graphic options after starting the game.
I will also pop in to say that the latest Ishiiruka (890, I believe) has been the best performing version for me so far for almost every game I've thrown on it.
Does opening the graphics option in WW break anything?

Playing Mega Man 2.5d is making me want to get the new silicone pads. Face buttons are so flat they end up depressing inside the case.
Also exploring good grip option that won't block the fan. Maybe a 3DS XL case with some holes cut out.

Pulled the trigger and ordered one from GeekBuying, which I've since heard mixed to terrible things about so hoping for the best on that front. AliExpress wanted my SSID and driver's license before processing my credit card, which I wasn't comfortable with regardless of how reputable they are.

I haven't been following, do the new membranes come standard on new units? Or are they always a standalone diy upgrade? I don't mind, I just want to buy them ASAP if they're non standard.

I read that the batch send out or made after January 10th has them. I'm not sure how many places would still be selling old stock though. GeekBuying's page implied they were selling the newest batch, and I would assume GPD's official AliExpress page would have them too.
I've come to the conclusion the intake grill is too small.
The grill is smaller in diameter.
I've added another circle of holes and the fan is even louder now and it feels like more air is moving through the vent.
Need to do some controlled temp testing to see for sure and I did put a stronger fan in months ago which may be related to this, not sure anyone else would see any improved results if they did the same since my fan does draw much more air and the intake may be designed with the stock fan's airflow in mind.

Immediate impression on the build quality isn't so good, lol. Just opened it up and the left stick looks a bit dinged up, the lid won't go down all the way, and the screen looks like it was wiped down after some heavy use. Is it possible someone returned this and I got their leftovers from Geekbuying?

I just got mine a couple of hours ago and it sounds like you got a return, yeah. My screen didn't have that issue and my left stick was fine. Lid not going down seems to be a design flaw - I've noticed that when mine's closed, the left side is slightly raised. Got mine from Geekbuying as well - not sure if I actually got a revised model or not, and Windows was already setup on mine (though wasn't activated with the correct key).
The only issue I've got with build quality is that the triggers are really weird feeling. Seem to have too much wiggle room, causing them to click weirdly at times. Speaker is pretty atrocious also - I knew it wasn't great, but I didn't know that it was mono. No idea why they went with the setup they did. On that note as well, I also wish start and select were in-between the analog sticks.
Performance is solid enough though. Ran a little Paper Mario on Mupen via Retroarch and it seemed decent beyond some emulator-related bugs. Tried Tales of Symphonia for a little. Framepacing is janky when exploring, but it seemed fine in-battle and the PC port's a bit of a mess anyways. Loading a couple more games on right now, but I'm exhausted today so probably won't do much more with it until after work tomorrow.
Anyone got any advice for initial usage? Especially with regards to any updates that I should do or tweaks to improve battery life.

Bleh. I have the worst luck when it comes to handhelds. I should've seen this coming. Was there a QC sticker on the bottom of your unit? In all the unboxing videos I've seen there was one, but not on mine. Which just further makes me think I got a return. Contacting customer support now. Hopefully they're not quite as bad as people say. The lid not going down all the way doesn't bother me nearly as much as everything else. I forgot to mention in my original post that the body looks to be a bit scuffed as well. Just wasn't sure if it was poor QC or not.

None on mine either. Starting to have a couple weird issues on mine as well - namely, it keeps scrolling upwards when on mouse mode for... some reason. Nothing seems to fix this either.

I'm a complete dumbass and fucked up the install and the machine just loads the first screen, reboots, rince and repeat. cannot get into startup repair at all. what are the chances of a repair by them/and or refund? Guessing I'm going to have pay out the ass either way as I bought one of the Chinese stock.

Can't even play simple visual novels without the thing nearly burning my hands. I've read impressions of people saying it can get a bit uncomfortable in more demanding games but this was almost painful. Really hoping this was just a terrible unit all around because I want to love this thing when (if?) I'm able to get a replacement.

Eh that's really weird. Is your fan activated ? I mean, mine gets warm while playing Wind Waker and charging but that's about it. When I don't charge, it doesn't.
Yeah is your fan on? personally I found playing on the thing uncomfortable even playing something like Halo 1 on it, wasn't anywhere near burning my hands but the constant heat was just offputting for any long period of time.
