IndieGogo - Windows 10 GPD Handheld -299$ "A Laptop Fitting in Your Pocket"

Wait, there was tape a take between the heatsink and the CPU!?

On mine, yes.

I don't think my 8700 has this problem as the GPU works fine and thermal wise, is okay.

This 8750 I have, I believe from the date, was the first batch they rushed out of the door to satisfy JD.com backers.

Man, brilliant move on that dude's part to sell it to you for $600, heh.

I was looking to get a 8750 but the guy says that the handheld works great, but has what he believe is a driver issue with the micro SD card slot, as it currently doesn't recognize cards in the port.

Do you know anything of that issue yourself or anyone else might know?

Sometimes when you roll the dice you get snake eyes.

I have had someone contact me looking for help to get his MicroSD card slot working. I don't know if this is the same person. He wasn't able to fix his problem.

Anyhoo, I finished the Heatsink mod. It's now WAY cooler, cut 10C off my temps.

Bad news is Metroid Prime still runs like shit. I think I'm just going to have my 8750 version as my endurance GPDwin. Now that I have the heatsink mod done on it, I'll probably keep the fan disabled all the time and make it go for energy savings.

I'll check out the mod videos later, but did you have a performance bump at all?

My temps are much better now but I have to try some other tweaks to see how far I can take it.

Overall I don't think it's worth it. while I can make the 8750 run well, I have to make it use full power to do so. It's just not worth it. So on the 8750 that I have, I'm going ton make it super energy efficient and keep the fan off all the time.

Phawx, are you planning on opening the 8700 as well? What size shim did you use?

Maybe in the future but right now no. I bought a 1ft square copper sheet a long time ago, I believe it's 1mm thick. I just cut it with a hacksaw.

so 20mmx20mmx1mm

Hi. -- tl;dr = bold stuff

I apologize if I ask anything that should be known by now. I've popped in and out of this thread about 6-7 times, pretty much whenever it pops up on the first page.

Is this something that can later easily be used to play WoW or Everquest using joystick controls? With good mapping/key binding?

My shield tablet has pretty much satisfied that desire for the kinds of things this could do. However it's still ARM/Android instead of windows, and it's still a bit too heavy/clumsy using a PS4 controller with 'phone holder' connected to the controller.

its probably workable depends how well you map the controls to your comfort uses

The IndieGoGo shipments are surely coming soon....

Nothing against these guys buy wouldn't just be easier to get a cherry trail windows tablet and use a Xbox controller. There are a lot of windows tablet options other than surface that are way cheaper that run cherry trail processors now.

I've never understood comments like this. There is an absolute world of difference between something like a laptop or tablet w/controller and handhelds like the GPD Win and the Nintendo 3DS. One is extremely portable, can fit in a pocket, and be used while holding it in your hand. The other is portable (but much less so), cannot fit in a pocket, and has to be set on a table or lap to be played.

That makes all the difference. I simply wouldn't end up using a tablet with controller because it wouldn't work for me and doesn't appeal to me. Handhelds, on the other hand, have always appealed to me for their compactness and usability.

I'm very excited for the GPD Win. I've long wanted a handheld PC that could play games. I'll be able to enjoy thousands of older PC games, emulated console games and less demanding current games.

Ya.

One of the hiccups for me on using a tablet/controller or even phone/controller like that is the fact that I often play in bed on my back, holding it up like a Vita or some way like this.

Plus you just close up and sit down, or close up and come back to it (as a Dad/Husband) instead of carefully setting stuff aside, and making sure to not hurt your tablet screen or doing something silly like constantly setting your controller on top of your tablet.

**** Btw those two quote-replies on WoW, thank you. Watched the vid, showed the Wife.

Guys and gals, I have a question for you. I haven't been on neogaf much for a while as I was busy with other stuff going on in my life, so I missed out on the indiegogo campaign and the early preorders. I am really anxious to get one of these. Is there anywhere I can order one and get it in a reasonable amount of time? If I have to wait a month or more I would rather just wait until their supply improves.

Nope and its been over a week since the first batch

Im a little irritated. I thought once they got rolling the output would be constant

Very frustrating

I do look forward to when all of the backers have been issued units and the discussion revolves around people trying new games/settings.

this is new on the geekbuying page?

there seems to be stock in the ES warehouse; no preorder

Attention:

This item in GeekBuying's ES warehouse only ships to the following EU countries:
Spain/Portugal, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, UK, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech republic, Finland, Hungary, Sweden, Ireland, Romania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania

Saw the Spain warehouse page this morning.
Still shows 2 business days before shipping underneath.
That's probably something you'll want to contact Geekbuying's CS to verify that's when they'll actually ship out.

Phawx have you tried doing some long term tests by running some test program for half an hour on the devices side by side and see what temps and cpu frequency the two stabilize at after the units having been running for a while?
Cooling systems between the two aren't exactly one to one anymore but I'd be interested in what frequency the two like running at during long and hard gaming sessions after the devices have gotten nice and hot.

They're purely thieves at this point. They said 100-200 units per day. They're really insulting backers

Yeeeep more silence no updates really fucking stupid, supposedly sorting out shipping but this shit should have sorted out already.

geekbuying said they contacted dhl and dhl said they haven't updated tracking. seems fishy. when should i try to get a refund through paypal. how many days should i wait. supposedly it shipped on the 25th.

My Geekbuying order arrived this morning (DHL to Germany) . Earlier than expected, I only got the ominious 666666 tracking number and was not expecting the delivery at all this week.

I just got a DHL shipping text saying my package will be delivered on November 2nd!
Guess they just sent the shit and didnt bother with emailing anyone

I suppose the rest of you IGG backers should expect your devices soon

You said you were 924, right? Hmm, that means they did get through a fair amount already, then.

When I track, I now get: "Origin Post is Preparing Shipment, We have received notice that the originating post is preparing to dispatch this mail piece."

Despite it saying "Depart from Overseas Processing Facility" on 10/28.

Now it's starting to look like it was only just now sent out, lol. The tracking number at least now shows up when I use USPS to track it.

Relax-I dont think Geekbuying has let anyone down yet. Some people are even starting to receive their orders.

I haven't received any further DHL shipment notice, so I think this confirms that my "review" unit is one I paid for.

My order was shipped on the 25th with a YT tracking number that still doesn't work. I'm hoping I get word soon (Geekbuying)

Lots of people on Dingoonity confirming DHL tracking numbers. Orders up to 1000+ from IGG have tracking.

it's go time!
