IndieGogo - Windows 10 GPD Handheld -299$ "A Laptop Fitting in Your Pocket"

Your pledge ID should have been included in your Contribution Confirmation email from IndieGogo. I don't know any other way to find it.

To find Pledge ID:
Click your name > My Contributions > View Order Details, then look at the URL:

https://www.indiegogo.com/individuals/{user#}/contributions/{pledgeid}

EDIT: Other interesting things this morning:
- I saw on Reddit that if you go on the DHL website and use "Track By Shipper's Reference" and enter your pledgeid, it will find whether your unit shipped and the current status. I think DHL only applies to UK/EU orders though? Phawx, how are your units being shipped?
- On IGG some people are complaining about throttling, to the point of thermal shutdown. I think a lot of us are going to need to attempt the heat sink mod that Phawx did.

Heatsink mod looks like a complete shitfight for most people (including me).

Gonna do a fresh windows install first and some tweaks before anything

What is the software used by phawx for the frame rate and heat ?

I get mine tomorrow

What are some of the first things I should do and look for?

I think it would be pretty obvious if you had an issue. So all that you really need to do is run a semi-demanding game for 20 minutes or so and see if your device shuts down. ThePhawx might have some better tests, though.

So what most people are experiencing (includiny my review 8700) is the display driver crashing. I managed to fix mine by doing a clean install and tweaking windows services/group policy edits/stardard 'best windows performance' in advanced settings. Defender is off and disabled on group policy, windows search is off.

Sometimes the display driver crashing doesnt crash the game. It will just be a hiccup.

But a lot of people are having mild to severe problems that may be alliviated with elevating thermal threshold.

The people who have the problems right now are trying lots of things. I have a feeling its going to be a widespread problem.

Ill probably open my 8700 soonish because my silver shim showed up. But looking at the exhaust port it kind of seems they changed the heatsink on the 8700.

The Display driver crashes rather often for me as well. Most of the time the running game will crash too. But I did not test many games yet. Visual Novels (Higurashi) run fine for hours. Smaller Indie games I had mixed results. The latent Momodora ran great, Shadowrun Daggerfall crashed after character creation, and Invisible Inc. did not recover from the Display driver crashing.

RE: the driver crashing issue, you have had little to no crashing since you did the clean install/service changes?

Are there any pre trimmed windows 10 install files available?
People used to build customized windows builds all the time and then manually install drivers after

I don't want to tinker with my device. I just want it to work. I'm going to be pissed if it isn't working out of the box.

For me, yes. But two other on Dingoonity haven't had any luck

This device needs tinkering whether your display driver crashes or not.

Guys, I'm just going to put this out there. The 8700 units def have some quirks. Considering how few that have already received units and are reporting display driver crashes, I think today and tomorrow we're going to see a lot of issues. If we don't then, perhaps it was just the Dragonbox shipment.

But there *may* be a larger problem. Not 100% yet though.

This guy is speculating that it's poorly binned chips:
http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-devices/i-think-i-got-where-the-problems-come-from-maybe/

For everyone's sake, I hope that is not the case. There wouldn't be much that GPD could do in that case, since they're just using the supply that Intel gave them.

Bad start. I want to do a clean install thé gpd doesn't even recognize my standard sa disk USB key

Need to figure a way ....

Does windows included all needed driver for this device or I should download others things as well before ?

I want a plug and play nice device but with good performances. Not a crashing machine lol

The stock machine has all drivers already installed.

Can't wait to hear your review. How will be based around? As a game device? Tablet PC? All in one? I love hearing anything else that it might be useful for that no one has thought off (maybe a decent coding device? Or a handy college edit papers device?)

But if i do a clean install I'm losing all drivers then ?

I always make a clean install on any device ...

You have two options.

1.) You can use Double Driver to back up and restore. (Just need the wifi fix batch file)

2.) Download the drivers bundle from GPD: https://mega.nz/#!HkoiCICC!MjPmZ1vqrVFSfvxUusbLp4FH8X8Vn9djKY8-511F_jc

The GPD Driver bundle includes the wifi fix batch file already. Just be sure to download and install the latest video card driver first.

My review is 95% targeted at a 3DS XL sized x86 gaming handheld. I've stripped it of everything else that isn't essential to getting games on it.

It doesn't even see my USB drive anyway can't do a clean install ... damn.
Any other tips to improve performance than a clean install ?

I have only 40/56gb left natively

:( i really hope mine is a good one

This is not looking like the dream machine we were hoping for at the moment and my expectations were low to begin with

Got mine!

Had a brief scare there, too- USPS tracking said I signed for it at my house...except I was at work. But it was sitting on my porch. Whew!

Now to start messing with it and see if crashes.

I will never understand why shipping companies in the States leave things on the porch. This is an expensive item. Who takes responsibility if it's stolen?

My brother has signed for DHL and mine's waiting for me at home.
3 days to travel 8000 miles from China to me.
Now to wait until I get home from work and start playing around with it and see how well it works.

{E} for those of you that seemingly haven't had yours ship out yet go here and put your pledge number in the reference space.

It has shown tracking info for some backers who seemingly haven't had their devices shipped out yet.

Good question. I would assume in this case it would have been on the post office, since they are the ones who claimed I signed for it. Would have been easy to prove where I was at the time. I'm assuming what happened is still bad in that the postman claimed I signed for it when I didn't, but at the same time I'm grateful since nobody was home, lol.

I live in a condo and it's pretty quiet where I am. That's actually why this was a surprise to me. If I still lived in an apartment, I would have had this shipped either to my parents' house or to work instead.

So far so good.

Build quality is seriously impressive. Nothing like some other cheap Chinese devices I have purchased before.

I like the L and R buttons.

Display is amazing.

Analog sticks for mouse scrolling and page scrolling and L/R for clicking actually works amazingly well.

Keyboard is about what I expected, but I'm not disappointed at all.

Tops of the analog sticks are a very sticky rubber. Not sure if this is going to be a good thing or a bad thing.

Charged to 100% and then pulled off charger, after a few minutes of web browsing with Edge and downloading/moving files it says I should get around 4 hours of battery life like this, which is decent. (Edit: Now saying 5hr 54min after Windows Updates stopped downloading)

That's nice to hear, i saw a review and the reviewer didn't like the build quality

How are the L2/R2 buttons? heard they were iffy

I knew what to expect because of reviews -- the buttons are a bit weird because they are shaky (although perfectly secure), but when you are using them it doesn't really bother you. The microswitches they use are wonderful and the buttons have great feedback.

Not a massive fan of the mushy d-pad and face buttons, but they get the job done.

Nice, doesn't sound too much of an issue then

Are you facing the driver crashing issue yet? or haven't played around with it long enough to?

Wonder if it's just some bad units in the wild or universal thing

No driver crashing issues yet, and I know Windows update is gonna update that driver anyway (doing the reboot right now).

All I've done so far is Edge, file moving, and some Stepmania (music game simulator), everything is A-OK so far.

So it looks looks like FedEx will handle our units stateside.

Go here:
http://www.yunexpress.com

Enter the YT tracking number we got.

After it loads, copy the ACTUAL tracking number (turns out the YT number is just a reference number)

Plug the tracking number into FedEx tracking.
What the hell? Is this the Da Vinci Code or National Treasure or sonething? Insane detective work haha

Initial impressions:

-Could not get over how small this thing is. I've used a GPD XD before and watched lots of videos, but I was still floored that I had such a small, fully-functional PC in my hand. Just so cool!

-Very surprised by the build quality of this thing and even the packaging that it came in. It doesn't feel like something that cheap and reminds me of a product that a big gaming company would release.

-The d-pad is a little mushy but seems OK enough. I need to test some fighters that will run properly to be sure. The should buttons feel pretty good and controlling the mouse using the analog stick and the shoulder buttons works really, really well. It's also nice to have touchscreen functionality, too. The keyboard is fine for what it is, but forget about doing any real typing on it or playing games via kb/m. Should be obvious that if you want to do that you'd want to plug some in, though. :)

-This unit is roughly the size of a 3DS XL but is much more comfortable to hold and use. The 3DS XL always tended to cramp my hands...this does not.

-Immediately went and downloaded Street Fighter V. Tried some .ini file setting tweaks and ran it in low spec mode at the lowest possible resolution (like 200-something...I couldn't even read the text, lol), but could not hit 60 FPS. Maybe someone will find a way to do it. That's OK, though- plenty of other games to play plus Steam streaming. Also noticed that the load times were noticeably longer. Was playing this installed on the GPD's internal 'SSD'.

-Do Windows updates download in the background, even when games are running? Perhaps that did something to slow down SFV but I kind of doubt it. :P

-Had the Intel HD graphics crash on me, several times in a row, when Steam was running and I tried using Windows search. I restarted explorer.exe and it was fine again. I spent a good 30+ minutes messing with SFV and it never crashed. Played with the fan on. Also noting that I disabled the touch service before playing it. That's an issue on the Surface and it is possible that it may crash some other games if it's not turned off.

Just downloaded Owlboy and am currently downloading DOA5 Last Round now. Have a lot I want to try. Need to get myself a micro SD card to use as well. Was also planning on using a small flash stick for even more space if needed.

I'm also nerding out so hard realizing that you could hook this up to a TV or monitor, plug in or pair it with controllers, and use it as a micro-console. Who needs the NES Classic Mini now?

I am reading so much reports on the crashes .. feel like cancelling my order now before it is too late.. any news from chinese or Japanese forums? Are they having the same problems?
