IndieGogo - Windows 10 GPD Handheld -299$ "A Laptop Fitting in Your Pocket"

Yesterday I went through the BIOS and disabled turboboost and changed some setting I don't remember to gimp the GPU without success.
Although I just rechecked everything in BIOS and all the settings are original.
I've gone in there at least 6 or 7 times changing settings and saving each time and apparently it didn't do a thing.
Maybe BIOS changes can fix it, I can't tell.
I can't save any changes to BIOS so all my testing so far was a complete waste of time apparently.

I'm gonna try updating the BIOS.
Maybe that'll fix my BIOS page being rotated 90 degrees as well.
Are we having fun yet?

If you are referring to my "test" that I outlined above, you shouldn't have to mess with BIOS, you can actually limit the CPU via a Windows program as Phawx said: ThrottleStop in Windows.

{E} actually thinking about it I was able to set the RAM to single channel so I guess thats one thing that actually managed to change.

10/25 BIOS is still portrait.

What are you guys temperature overall ? Ingame /idle ?
Which fan setting do you use in which situation ?

I've only changed the "totally safe and recommanded" settings in phawx bios video. As soon as he told be careful i stayed away from changing anything

The status of my shipment is "Depart from Overseas Processing Facility". This means that my GPD Win has left Singapore and is on transit to my country, right!?

all my cores are almost full time at 2400 and some times less, after phawx bios tweak, is that Dangerous?

Decided to check my local post service tracking instead of just the EMS or the SP ones and looks like my GPD Win is already at my country, awaiting clearance! You guys should try the same.

Ive been checking regularly and it still says in Hong Kong. Local post service doesnt even recognize the tracking number.

I just realized I have one white dead pixel :( didn't se dit before trying a full black screen

I can forget changing it so whatever I guess

Any way to run project 64 in full screen ? As long as I put 1280/720 in full screen mode , it goes portrait

BIOS updated and I think my settings saved this time although I need to double-check later.
Display driver still crashes
Downloaded throttlestop to try some to start some power consumption related tests, it tells me cpu not supported.
Any other apps like it or I just need to go through bios after all?

Well already disabled turboboost in the bios but Rightmark works well.
qZYSFvb.jpg

Fan off, screen brightness at 0 and hobbling the processor does not stop the crashes though.
Max temp ever reached was 71C.
Testing more games and Luftrausers works fine albeit its a 2d side scrolling shooter.
Terraria also worked fine, took forever to load though even when I reset the processor back to 1600mhz.

For a visual reference this is what happens whenever I try Torchlight.
What its supposed to look like.
Then the driver crashes.
Over and over giving different graphical artifact errors each time until the fifth time where windows blocks the game from accessing the graphics hardware.
To note Jedi Knight Jedi Academy works fine through the character setup page and video cutscenes but crashes as soon as you get to the game engine rendered cut scene where the graphics driver crashes but instead of it showing artifacts or continuing to crash the screen'll be frozen on the last image shown but it'll continue playing although given it only shows the frozen image even when the cutscene ends and you can control the character it doesn't help much.
I'm not sure if it continues playing without crashing more because its not rendering anything other than the frozen image or something else.

I need to widen my test portfolio and test more games.

Does anyone else have a win regardless of if it plays games without crashing or not that has torchlight to compare?
Its less than a gigabyte download.

This kind of tinkering is giving me a headache. I just want to play Steam games on the go. I really hope none of this tinkering nonsense is necessary. It's cool we can do that, and I might eventually, but I worry the device is flawed out of the box :(

You don't have to mess with anything. I haven't and it is working great overall.

I mean maybe shouldn't have picked a windows machine then? Some of the stuff is excessive I agree having to fuck with certain settings to fix errors that shouldn't be on the device from day one is ridiculous, but this was a backed windows handheld device from a Chinese company, some tinkering is expected.

No, no tinkering is expected for a consumer device. My windows gaming PC works fine without any tinkering. GPD makes hardware already that doesn't need tinkering.

I disagree totally and it is a shame if we are expected to perform servicing on our new devices. Hopefully, however, that isn't the case. It doesn't seem to be the case for everyone, like Lyte Edge.

Thanks Lyte.

Well good news, I've played orcs must die for more than half an hour without issue.
It's a 2011 third person action tower defense.
Turboboost is still off, cpu at 1600mhz, backlight at full and fan on full speed.
Will try turning on turboboost later and see if it makes it crash.

OK, installed Torchlight and loaded up a save. Worked fine for me.

Thanks.
So this at least shows this isn't all devices.
It's mine.
I'm gonna see what Kendy has to say about this.

Just noticed 3 rows of keys are leaving marks all the way across the digitizer.
I don't like that.

I haven't done any tinkering with mine (unless you count updating windows "tinkering") and my unit has worked just fine out of the box *shrug* I agree that some of the maximizing is unnecessary for most people (but hey, more power to those who want to), but I also agree that buying a Windows PC with a CPU/GPU not designed for gaming and a 5.5" screen and expecting everything to be seamless is naive at best.

Tested Final Fantasy XI for about an hour earlier and it worked great. Gonna try Dolphin and PCSX2 now.

Superhot: Too slow for precise control at 1280x720, but drop the resolution down and it runs great! I ran it at 640x400 and it still looked good and the game plays perfectly.

Haydee: Runs perfectly at 1280x720. I had the few settings that are available on low or off, but it runs so well that some may be able to be turned up. I just got this game it's...uh...wow, that character model, lol.

Hmm...I don't know about using a flash drive for game installs. I started downloading and installing a game and could feel the flash drive absolutely radiating heat and the GPD WIN getting hotter and hotter. It didn't overheat but decided to stop it just in case. Will just stick with the internal storage for now. Maybe I'll try again with much smaller sized games.

Currently installing DS2 to one, haha. Nothing getting too hot but the transfer speeds seem kind of bad.

Aside from me, the people tinkering with their device are just having problems getting it to work.

Like my third unit. I didn't tinker with it at all. It just doesn't turn on.

Anyone ever run into this issue before? I tried installing a game from Steam and it would just stop downloading. Only that particular game. Restarting Steam, restarting Windows, and clearing the Steam cache had no effect. So weird.

I was using a very small-sized flash drive. Small enough that it would barely stick out of the unit and could be put into a 3DS XL case, still inserted into the system, with no problem.

Doesn't playing games off a flash drive affect the life of the drive and also cause performance issues anyway?

There are some definite QC issues going on here. I can tell that my unit from Geekbuying was actually tested before they shipped it.

How can you tell? I also bought from Geek Buy. I thought their emails about testing the devices were strange but it's brilliant, considering what we know.

Unless this is now a normal thing on new Windows 10 PCs (which would be weird), it already had an Admin account created and was ready to go. No set up process to go through. The desktop I bought a few months ago came the same way. I assume they just used express settings and wanted to make sure it worked. I had to go through the settings and turn off stuff like update sharing.

I just noticed this on mine as well. Try to find a microfiber cloth that will cover the keys, and sandwich it between them and the screen when you close it . I used to do this with my 1st gen 3DS (the model that would rub the lower screen bezel against the upper screen). Worked like a charm, and I never had any scratches. Plus, you always have a screen cleaning cloth on hand.

I've been reading through what games have been crashing the Win... I don't own any of them. Would something like Fallout 3 tax the system enough to see if I have the display driver issues? Or (standard) Skyrim?

Anyone got some emulator impressions?

Dolphin is hit or miss. Paper Mario Thousand year door runs well.

PCSX2 is hit or miss. Kingdom Hearts 1 runs great.

NullDC is the only DC emu that works decent enough.

Saturn is hit or miss.

Anything before then works fine enough.

I haven't tried Citra on it yet.

Got my win from geekbuying a few minutes ago, barely bigger than the GPD XD, I'm impressed.

Currently setting up everything I need.

It's a Z8700, as expected.

Nice was more interested in psone emulation but i can assume that nds emulation runs fine too?

Fallout 3 should definitely be enough to tax the system and see if you get any driver crashes/shutdowns. People with the worst problems have these issues after 30 seconds or so of ANY 3D rendering.

Don't get your hopes up. As of today, my WIN has been at the Hong Kong International Airport for an entire week.

Looks like my Win10 wasn't activated out of the box, it had another product key that was in use on another PC...

I've used the key inside the box and it activated right away.

Weird.

I have a far too expansive Steam library and will be primarily testing JRPGs and VNs (in addition to Dolphin and PCSX2). Will post results here or in the eventual OT.

(And whoever asked for Valkyria Chronicles elsewhere in the thread, if they haven't already got theirs, I'll be testing that.)
