IndieGogo - Windows 10 GPD Handheld -299$ "A Laptop Fitting in Your Pocket"

Self repair for a brand new device. Wonderful. It isn't like we paid $100 for the device. They sold it like a real consumer product, not a hobbyist device.

Indeed. It's my last and first time I'm backing a project. Now no choice. It's not working as I want and sending back will take one month and half and chose shipping. Maybe more than paying a guy to do this for me

Anybody tried ?

Mines doing well

Im basically using it default out of the box

Definitely doesnt take much to get it running hot though so ill be considering doing at heat sink fix at some point

Havent really put anything on this to push it hard yet

What fan are you getting and if you know what size shim do I need for the heating mod

http://www.sunon.com/tw/products/pdf/DCFAN/MC2506_C.pdf
The device currently has MC25060V2-000C-A99 and it has a brother MC25060V1-000C-A99 which is what I have on the way.
It should literally bolt in place without any modification required.
I cheaped out and got mine from a seller on aliexpress but there are several places online in the US that seem to have it for less than $20.
Will note that the pigtail is probably longer on the new fan and probably will need to be shortened.

I just used K5 pro thermal paste when I took apart and reassembled mine so I can't be of much help there for shim size.

I should look into ways of lower the temperature. Trying to play Riddick (the second Xbox 360 release) it got uncomfortably hot. Ordinarily with emulation and other games it's warm, but not that bad. Although it even gets warm on idle. I switch between high and low but never off.

For the most part I'm happy with mine. It has its quirks but there's no device quite like it. Ideally there'd be something like an Nvidia Shield portable running Windows 10.

And installing a touch screen track pad has been very useful with how they have the controller setup. Some games and applications don't read xinput unless started with them and trying to use touch screen to navigate can be troublesome.

Spent a while setting up Mame and Maximus Arcade yesterday. Running everything off a 128GB Samsung USB 3 dongle and it runs great. All in all, it takes up about 30+ gigs without chds. It's pretty awesome having a nearly complete Mame collection in a handheld and playing games like Elevator Action Returns or Killer Instinct (arcade) on the go is pretty amazing. The analog nubs work surprisingly well and I was easily able to pull off moves in Street Fighter Alpha. Shmups works even better. I suspect because they don't have as much travel as a regular analog stick.

Right now, I have everything cranked up but since I'll pretty much just be using the GPD for mostly 2D content, I will try to lower some settings to preserve battery life. What little streaming I tried worked great and will just do that for any 3D stuff. I'm also running everything through Steam big picture mode which gives it more of a complete feel.

Despite the issue with the Windows key, I'm really happy with the GPD Win.

Edit

Does anyone here have much experience with the third party remote play app? Ive heard it works well but some gaf opinions wouldbe much appeciated.

Also wanted to mention that the dongle Im usuing wont let me bring the tilt the screen up fully. Not a big deal but Im worried that eventually it might mess with the usb port onthe win. Im pretty sure i can shave the dongle down enough so it'snot an issue but something to keep in mind using them.

Well, finally got mine today. The packaging is terrible. It's so faux nice. Cheap plastic container, flimsy cardboard. Whatever. The device is actually pretty decent in terms of build quality. It's heavier than I imagined, though. Pretty, pretty heavy.

The fan is loud. I don't know who said it wasn't but it is noticeable when you turn it on.

I think GeekBuy really did test the device. It had a saved wireless network on it.

I picked up this USB flash drive today. I bought an SD Card but further research shows the USB drive is faster. I'll swap it out for the tiny flash drive.

I'm thrilled the Win has USB C. Almost all my devices are USB C so that's really nice.

Windows 10 key doesn't work. Ugh.

Glad to see that you got yours.

I emailed Kendy at GPD Win and said that my key didnt work. He said that GeekBuying should have some for those with invalid keys but went ahead and gave me a new one that did work. Maybe try emailing GB first then Kendy if that doesnt work.

Thanks. I'll try that.

Also, played a little Final Fantasy IX Steam version. Works pretty decently. Not perfectly smooth all of the time but totally playable. I had to keep the fan on high, though. Owlboy runs great. I'll be using it as an indie machine so I'm super happy.

I did a few tweaks here. Notably, the performance boosts through disabling services and updating wlan driver

Cheers for linking the tweaks - shall try those, as have just been using out of the box config so far.

Is the OT going up some point soon or is this becoming the OT of sorts?

Stiiiilll waiting on mine, going on holidays soon gonna suck if its sent when im away...Originally wanted it for my birthday but looks like that ain't happening.
Edit: Still not on the updated shipping...well filling out the form to do a chargeback see if I can get my money back, this is insane.
Double Edit: Emailed supposedly sent yesterday and will get the shipping information soon.

Still waiting on mine from Gearbest. Ordered mine on the 10th. They're taking preorders for the batch shipping after the 22nd of December, so I hope that mine is shipping soon.

Been playing gta 5 on mine.. at 320x240 with everything on low, it is playable with auto aim on.. been playing stick of truth on it as well.

Sorry I've been awol guys. Life and all.

After getting my key sorted and a fresh install the thing is amazing. Particularly the screen. I'm going to look into modding the button membranes to make them less squishy (especially the dpad).

Overall, I've been playing Isaac, Morrowind, Grimrock, Dark Messiah, and a lot of others at 30 or 60 FPS. Gets a little warm with 3D stuff but overall I love it. I'm really sorry to hear about problems others are having and GPD should either refund or replace their units.

Gonna try Tyranny tomorrow. Hope it holds up.

Well mines coming hopefully before Friday cause im on holidays then, its also supposedly from the new batch so will see how it goes.

From Indiegogo actually after they supposedly changed their production line and test them now, we shall see....

Got one from geek and igg both have 3D games issue

I'm not playing 3D pc games anyway so I don't care and weirdly all emulator including dolphin works

I wanted emulator and real mini pc so I don't care much bt still. It's nice to have such a small pc.

Is the 3D issue the black screen crash issue? Happened for the first time yesterday and seemed random. I've spent time with other games that ran poorly and made the system obnoxiously hot. But an indie 3D game forced a hard reset.

FINALLY coming by Monday will see if there are any changes since moving production and supposedly quality testing.
Man, it's been a journey for you. I hope you get a good one and you love it.

I love mine. I take it during my travels. The heat, though, is rough. Makes it difficult to play while charging it simultaneously.

Just took mine on holiday and gave my bro one as an early xmas gift. It has been a REVELATION. Beat defense grid on it, and my bro has been playing through broforce. I tinkered with grim dawn and got it playable, so I think that'll be next.

I installed Call of Duty 2 on Friday and it's amazing to play it on the go! I'm very happy of my purchase and it's blowing my mind the fact that I'm able to play on a handheld games from the early XBox 360 - PS3 era o__o

I managed to activate Windows using the new key Geek Buy gave me. I had to call Microsoft for it to be activated. Then I spent two hours updating it. Hope it still works well.

So, yesterday I had my first heating (?) issue with the device. I played my first 3D game, which was chosen to be very light: Lili: The Child of Geos. I played for about an hour and the device got hotter than it had ever been and there were instances where I would get a black screen for several seconds, after which the game resumed. No crashes though! What worried me is that I started to see screen artifacts on the form of glitched geometry, a symptom for overheating.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I ended buying a new key...
For $10
.

I have been using an SD card for storage. Recently, I swapped to a USB 3 stick. So, so much better. Do not use SD. It is slow and your games will suffer from lag. I bought this stick and it works great. Except for the blinking light. I need to paint over it.

I have been thinking about switching to a usb for storage. Seemingly the sd slot sleeps after moments of non use, so even storing emulated games on it causes momentary freezes as it attempts to load data.

Why's that?

Just really really turned off by the shoulder buttons, worse then their previous handheld and surprisingly worse then the N3DSXL and I thought that wasn't possible, seems to get hot playing the most basic things, also agreed about the USB 3, SD seems to have hicups when games load.

Correct. That was exactly my experience. A USB 3 stick fixed it completely.

Well, finally got my unit this last weekend just after Thanksgiving. Initial impressions. Packaging is pretty cool. Unit itself feels pretty nice. Still feels of cheap plastic but the fit/finish look pretty good. Has some heft to it but is smaller than I thought. Shoulder buttons are meh but the rest of the buttons feel ok. Keyboard is pretty nice. Reminds me of my original MotoDroid. Can't see myself doing a lot of work on this thing it looks like it could be a pretty decent umpc tool.

After a full charge I picked it up yesterday and powered it on and was immediately greeted with the "windows has run into a problem and will shutdown. Awesome, windows failed! Boooo! Reboot and again failed. Windows repair also failed so right off the bat I needed to do a clean install. Not ideal but I was going to do it anyway. Was worried my key was going to be no good like others but Install went ok and activated. Ran some mem/processor tests and looked green. Drivers are easy to locate including fixing the wifi for anniversary edition.

Ran Dirt Rally (ultra Low) as my temp and chip test and no driver crashes. Also played some Bastion for about an hour and while temps feel pretty high it was nothing egregious. Still, can make the hands uncomfortable. I prepared for that before I got the unit and already had silver epoxy and copper shims so I opened it up today. Certainly not for the faint of heart. It went mostly ok but the wifi anntena wire connectors were apparently made of glass and snapped. Decided to just epoxy(non conductive) them in place and so far so good. If things get spotty Ill open it up again and replace or solder. The shim and epoxy/paste looks to have lowered my temps about 10-12c. Time will tell if cracking it open was worth it but so far it seems to be running well.

I still have a ways to go before it is setup. Some more stress tests and loading up my games and emulators but Im digging it so far.

Well, it'll be my second time traveling with this thing. This time, though, I'm going to bring an HDMI cable and my Steam controller. Going to hook it up to the hotel TV and use it like a console. I'm mainly worried about the heat from using it while charging it. Also, I guess I have to move stuff off of the USB drive if I want to use the Steam controller. Weak.

Would be interested in hearing if the joystick mouse works fine for you when the screen is displayed both on the Win's lcd and the tv but stops functioning when it only displays on the tv/second screen.

Well both the repair kit from GPD and parts I ordered from US based suppliers arrived today despite how long ago I ordered from the US person.
Y'know I didn't exactly have much enthusiasm to begin with.
hqAqzEk.jpg
The little bit I have is evaporating rapidly.
Well I guess it could be worse than a 0402 sized resistor.

This hotel room locked down the HDMI ports on the TV. It doesn't work period. I googled to solve it but I can't solve it with this crappy third-party remote control they gave me. Weak!!

Fan arrived.
Gotta figure out a thing that I missed.
New fan

It didn't occur to me until now but the old fan has only two wires which GPD spliced but the new fan is 3 wire.

Dici-Key sells the 2 wire version under the part number MC25060V1-000U-A99 apparently.
http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/sunon-fans/MC25060V1-000U-A99/259-1552-ND/2757801

I think if I unsolder the 3rd wire for the hall sensor it should be good to go.
Then I gotta set up a test using one of the few games I can play that turns it into a hand warmer, record temps, set up a thermocouple in front of the exhaust port and so on and repeat with the new fan.

GPD just released a firmware patch for the joystick/mouse.

GPD WIN Joystick Updating Manual

Improvement Points:
1. It optimizes the moving speed logic of the mouse mode.
2. It optimizes the delay problem of the left joystick wheel mode under the mouse mode.
3. It optimizes the keys response speed under joystick mode.

Updating Steps:
1.Please shut down the device completely.
2. Press the R3 Key from the keyboard and hold it, then press the power key to switch it on, after the screen is displayed then release the R3 key.
3. After entering into the system the joystick will go into the updating mode, and the functionalities of joystick and mouse will be lost temporarily.
4. Use the keyboard to run the program HJM1954M Updater V19 20161208.exe

Right now the update Firmware from the updating program is under the process of clickable, clicking update Firmware can finish the update.

Note: When the joystick is not under the updating mode the update Firmware will become gray and is not clickable, please try the above method again.

After updating go to mouse settings and uncheck enhance pointer precision to remove the wonky mouse acceleration.
Probably wanna tweak mouse and scroll speed after doing this.

Recieved my WIN about a week ago. Ever since I have been bringing it to work, something I never would do with a 3ds or ps vita. People are blown away that I have a 5.5 inch W10 laptop lol.

Seems my device is flawless. Ran everything I tried without adjusting the bios or intel settings. I have since tweaked it to run full tilt and its a formidable little handheld. I've ran Dragon Age Origins, Valkyria Chronicles, New Vegas, Ori and the Blind Forest, DMC, Portal 2, Tales of Symphonia HD, Enslaved, and a few others perfectly. Dolphin is not really playable unless you really tweak it and get the PAL versions of lower spec gamecube/wii games which is dissapointing but expected. Maybe with a more powerful refresh down the road. I have yet to test PS2 emulation but I'm happy with Steam, PS1, N64, and GBA.

It's honestly surpassed my expectations in all aspects. I love the keyboard since games like DAO don't have controller support (the WASD d-pad is a Godsend) and the D/X input and mouse mode switch is a clever way of going about controller issues. In DMC for example X input wouldn't work correctly for whatever reason so I used Direct and customized my controller. If one doesn't work another will.

The only complaints (not really even complaints) is that it does get hot. No crashes, lag, or freezing from it but its as hot a Galaxy pre explodemon. The fan works really well surprisingly, you can feel extremely hot air being pushed out the front vent. Another fan on the right side would be perfect and maybe some vent holes above the keyboard to let the heat trapped there escape out. Otherwise just...

1)Raise the internal storage to 256 GB
2)Add clickable analog sticks
3)Better SD card reader
4)Add a second speaker and move them to the left/right of the screen
5)better cooling ala a second fan, vents, and a better heat sink and thermal paste
6)A bigger battery even if it added a 1/4 inch to the device's thickness

Really its all stuff an updated model will prob include. The battery life I get is about 2 hours for the most intensive games and maybe 6-8 for web browsing and letting it sit idle. The wifi is blazing fast. Downloaded 12 gb in 10 minutes of so. The screen is sharp with good colors, all in all its as perfect as i imagined it. I will test many more games and let you guys know the results.
