IndieGogo - Windows 10 GPD Handheld -299$ "A Laptop Fitting in Your Pocket"

Well finally getting around to swapping out the resistors on the motherboard today using the kit I got from GPD and just finished installing the 1k resistor and was about to work on the 10k one with its wire.
There was a 1k and 22k resistor in the 10k bag, only 3 of the 5 were actually 10k.
If I didn't habitually test everything I'd have installed the 22k resistor and probably killed my device.
Amazing

Has anyone remapped the Xbox button to something Steam related? Thoughts?

The deed is done, the resistors are in.

Recieved my WIN about a week ago. Ever since I have been bringing it to work, something I never would do with a 3ds or ps vita. People are blown away that I have a 5.5 inch W10 laptop lol.

Seems my device is flawless. Ran everything I tried without adjusting the bios or intel settings. I have since tweaked it to run full tilt and its a formidable little handheld. I've ran Dragon Age Origins, Valkyria Chronicles, New Vegas, Ori and the Blind Forest, DMC, Portal 2, Tales of Symphonia HD, Enslaved, and a few others perfectly. Dolphin is not really playable unless you really tweak it and get the PAL versions of lower spec gamecube/wii games which is dissapointing but expected. Maybe with a more powerful refresh down the road. I have yet to test PS2 emulation but I'm happy with Steam, PS1, N64, and GBA.

It's honestly surpassed my expectations in all aspects. I love the keyboard since games like DAO don't have controller support (the WASD d-pad is a Godsend) and the D/X input and mouse mode switch is a clever way of going about controller issues. In DMC for example X input wouldn't work correctly for whatever reason so I used Direct and customized my controller. If one doesn't work another will.

The only complaints (not really even complaints) is that it does get hot. No crashes, lag, or freezing from it but its as hot a Galaxy pre explodemon. The fan works really well surprisingly, you can feel extremely hot air being pushed out the front vent. Another fan on the right side would be perfect and maybe some vent holes above the keyboard to let the heat trapped there escape out. Otherwise just...

1)Raise the internal storage to 256 GB
2)Add clickable analog sticks
3)Better SD card reader
4)Add a second speaker and move them to the left/right of the screen
5)better cooling ala a second fan, vents, and a better heat sink and thermal paste
6)A bigger battery even if it added a 1/4 inch to the device's thickness

Really its all stuff an updated model will prob include. The battery life I get is about 2 hours for the most intensive games and maybe 6-8 for web browsing and letting it sit idle. The wifi is blazing fast. Downloaded 12 gb in 10 minutes of so. The screen is sharp with good colors, all in all its as perfect as i imagined it. I will test many more games and let you guys know the results.

This is my experience as well. True, I have issues, like the ridiculously low 20 hz polling rate of the controller buttons, but when all is said and done, I wouldn't like to go back to a time when I didn't have a Steam backlog killer handheld. I hope there's a future for this device and others like it.

Well, one of my controller buttons is wearing out. It feels sticky. This news is unfortunate because my unit is otherwise pretty solid. The controller button was perfectly fine up until today. I worry about long term durability of all units now.

There was a user a while back who posted, after a week of usage the buttons started to wore out iirc

I hope we'll see a Switch-inspired device from GPD in the future. And assuming Switch turns out to be successful, I think it's very likely to happen.

To me that would be the perfect form factor. The increased size would lend for better hardware, and detachable controls means it could double as a regular tablet.

Personally I hope they keep on iterating on clamshell design. Makes it a lot more convenient and comfortable for me to take it on the go.

Feel like throwing this warning out there.
The joystick connectors seem to be secured by this red goo in most devices I've seen so far and at some point they've switched to using tape instead to secure them.

That stuff before it cures seeps into the connector so if yours is like that if at all possible never remove them.
If you must buy a new set of sticks because I can almost certainly guarantee the ribbon cables will be damaged during the removal.

Otherwise been having fun playing mass effect 2 on the go.
Already installed a higher powered fan which seemingly decreased the max temp this reaches by 2C and now I think I've found another bottleneck on the cooling system that I need to do some tests on.
Also working on designing my own radiator fins to install so hopefully at some point I'll be able to make this thing run so much cooler.

Decided to try and sell the device might write up a review before I do but yeah months of waiting and im not fully satisfied with the device.

I love the device. It's awesome but extremely flawed with build quality issues. Totally understand people not digging it.

Changes are coming so if anyone has been thinking about ordering one you probably wanna hold off.

Major improvements of GPD WIN after January 10 2017

Firstly, it improves the silicone pads of cross key and function keys A, B, X, Y.

This time we employ the best molded silicone within the industry, it feels smooth and elastic. This silicone pad’s mechanical strength, staying power, tension and flexibility are the best in the industry. It is much better than the previous silicone pad, and it is the best rebound feel since XD.

Moreover, the latest silicone pad has its own positioning holes, which makes it easier for the factory to assemble, so the probability of function keys to make mistakes will be decreased sharply.

Secondly, it improves the metal dome of the keyboard, which is the metal shrapnel under the keyboard.

For the previous keyboard, you have little feeling when press it down. When you press it, you don’t know the impact of the degree of strength to the input, as the keyboard only gives the feedback to your fingers about a blur message: which means you indeed pressed down this button. If you wish to know whether it is being input, you need to know it by looking at the screen. Also, when pressing the keyboard down by the fingers, the reaction of screen input is quite slow, which results in the impossible to do fast input. This time we have improved the metal dome, which improves the hand feeling dramatically. The reaction signal is clear, and the screen’s input responding speed is very fast.

Thirdly, it updates the firmware, which will improve the cross key and functional keys’ responding speed of the gamepad.

Previously because of considering the impact given by the shake, the designs of cross key and functional keys were too conservative. As a result of this, when playing fighting games the responding speed was too slow, which were way more slower than the joysticks of WIN. This time the update of firmware has improved the responding speed of cross key and functional keys, with the latest silicone pads, the hand feeling of gamepad has improved a lot with its quality.

Fourthly, under the mouse mod, if you hold the joystick at one direction for a long time, the pointer of the mouse will increase the speed, and the general sensitivity of the mouse has increased dramatically.

Previously under the mouse mode, if you want to accelerate the movement of the pointer, you need to adjust the moving speed of the mouse under setting of the system. But this way has a drawback, the moving speed of the pointer is too fast, so the location is not precise. This time we have a huge improvement, the initial of the pointer’s moving speed remains the same, however if you press the joystick for a long time, and pointer will accelerate which decreases the time for moving speed. What’s more, it has increased the position’s accuracy of the pointer.
Not exactly fond of the currently mouse firmware update so I don't think I'll like the next one they roll out either.

Cool. I'll return my current one once reviews of the new model spring up.

Skimming Tieba with machine translations so take with a grain of salt but found these interesting.

Shell changes did not mention ... there are on January 10 to ship it on time ...

Guerrillas sprayer : Thank you, it should be good than psp and ps3

Has been scheduled for the full version of the January 10 version of the machine, ask the landlord before the version of the driver to solve the problem? There is the need to return to the factory to adjust the resistance problem?

Guerrillas sprayer : Yes, January 10 is changed motherboard design these programs, there will be no fall back drive problem.

The screen if the big point just fine, you can move office, buy a lot more people

They've stopped selling the resistor repair kit, not sure if its because of this or they realized how much of a bad idea it was to sell those kits to the general public.

After waiting this long to see if I could find a reseller in the US I guess I'll hold out for the changes that are coming. Does anyone know where to buy from that would have the best chance of selling the new units ASAP when they're released? I'd hate to have waited this long and then receive an old model if the new ones are available at that time.

Does anyone here use Xpadder? Thoughts? It binds all the gamepad keys in xinput mode so you can actually use the triggers for something other than mouse clicks.

Well, my screen is starting to separate from its housing. What garbage build quality.

Oh so its not a case of the entire assembly coming out of the shell.
But the digitizer separating from the screen?
That sucks, if you send a picture to GPD they will ship another screen to you at least.
Thanks. I don't trust myself with self repair. I think I'll just wait for the remake to come out and return this one for the new one. The build quality on mine is extremely questionable. One button turned into mush feeling. Otherwise, though, the performance is great. None of the other issues I've commonly seen, other than SD sleep and charging issues. Who knows when it'll decide to charge and yes, I've adjusted the BIOS.

As a Steam controller user, GPD should use it instead of Xbox input. It's so much better. Although I can see issues running Windows 10 games.

Sooo just started using my GPDWin and noticed the screen is coming away in one corner. Not confident about opening up the device and really dont wanna go through the hassle of sending it back. Any idea if i can just squirt a tiny bit of glue in behind it? Any recommendations?

Cheers

Its held in place with a bunch of tabs.
Just press it all around with your thumb while supporting the outside of the case with your hand and it should click back into place.

Awesome thank you! I didn't hear a click but it seems to be staying in place now, I musn't have been pressing hard enough before.

I have been considering this one for a few days now and almost bought one until I read more on the newer version. I could buy one now and save around $50 or wait for the newer version but risk losing the discount. Decisions, decisions.

The newer version just has different rubber pad below the buttons.

Can anyone get the controller working for Gungeon? It keeps cutting out for me.

New firmware update for controller.

Hi all,

Two weeks ago we published the GPD WIN Gamepad update (V19 version), right now we have made some changes to this new version. So please find this updated version (V21). We hope this would be helpful for you. Many thanks.

For downloading the drivers please find this link: https://mega.nz/#!0JwlwTaa!z3mH2Lg6ZQ-MxJ8biJ5SbYFVMmC54hzqAkzSAgsNlg8
The major improvement is that it increases the response pressing speed of the Gamepad.
Someone who wrote a app to test the refresh rate of the controller says response time for the Win's controller in Xinput mode has gone from 47-48 ms to 7-8 ms so this should be a all around improvement especially for those who play fighting games.

I just messed around in Nitroplus Blasterz after applying this update.

HOLY. SHIT.

THEY FIXED IT! The d-pad works great now! Was able to pull of special moves with no problems!

I'm really debating getting one of these over the Nintendo Switch, I have over 400 steam games alone and it would be awesome to play these on the go.

What kind of battery life are you getting from moderate use. Let's say you play Skyrim, about how long would the battery last for something moderately intensive like this? 2 hours? How long does it take to charge?

Does anyone regret buying it? It's so hard to gauge if this would be worth it. I love my GPD XD and this seems like it would scratch my PC itch.

I'd say it all depends on what you plan to play. As for me it was either a Switch or a GPD Win. I choosed the Win and I dont regret considering it's performing where I wanted it to be. Which means to play games like Wind Waker at fullspeed, some of my favorite indies and PS360 era titles.
As for battery life, something like Skyrim is rather taxing but you can still hope for more than 2 hours of battery life. Something like Gamecube emulation sits between 3.5 and 4 hours. Lighter games will take it between 6 and 8 hours I guess.

It's my favorite handheld and I dont regret this purchase at all. But considering the Switch event is in 12 days, I'd recommend you to wait that to take you decision.
