IndieGogo - Windows 10 GPD Handheld -299$ "A Laptop Fitting in Your Pocket"

Sorry for the double post but DAMN! I can't believe i lost the Torchlight 2 sale! :(

I recharged the card for it... well i bought Titan Quest, Batman arkham origins and earth 2160.

I would really like to buy a 3d fallout game, i loved fallout 3 for its setting and exploration, but both new vegas and 4 don't give me the same vibes(4 doesn't run well too), i don't know if i would enjoy fallout 3 a second time, i guess i won't buy any of them.
Same for skyrim, for some reason nordic-like settings don't appeal to me.

I'm trying various demos:

-batman arkham city runs rather well(average of 25fps more or less) inside and outside at 720p even with many enemies and cutscenes are 60fps, definitively playable(and the reason why i bought origins, i have already played city)

-tales of berseria(or zestiria? i dunno lol) despite the frameate isn't that low it's slow

-king bounty armored princess runs well but the fonts are really too tiny, man i really wanted a king bounty!

-as i have already said castlevania lords of shadows 2 is gorgeous and playable if you lower the resolution a little

-not a demo but vikings battle for asgard is another of those games that despite a not too low framerate runs slow, also the settings window is a mess for some reason.

-realpolitk has small fonts but i guess it's doable

-grave danger need input configuration but it runs well

-hell yeah runs well

Man, every single time I see this thread, I want to buy one of these. But upon diving back into researching where to buy one and whatnot, I always find that certain versions have issues, certain versions run better than the rest, etc. :|

Is there a definitive, "Buy from here for this much to get the best possible product"?

Damn guys Earth 2160 kicks my ax hard again.

When i first played it i had already played and finished games like starcraft, command and conquer, red alert, warcraft 1&2, total annihilation, warhammer 40k and maybe others, but in Earth 2160 i couldn't even pass the first mission! On easy!

I have always found it really intriguing with its original structures(one factions has structures that require to be phisically connected, destroy a "link" structure and a branch will stop working, another faction has vertically modular structures and so on) and customizable units so i bought it again because i thought that after all this years i grew up so maybe i'm improved somehow... I'm not at all lol

Anyway, i tried another demo, gas guzzlers extreme, a car combat game, if you put everything at the minimum, and i mean not only low settings but also 1024x576 resolution and a low value of drawing distance, then it's definitively playable(in single player at least) and it would look good if it wasn't for the effects and the very close pop ups(because of the drawing distance setting), there's also a pixel dimension setting that i didn't change, i need to see if i can get a good result with that instead of the short drawing distance.

At least in Europe, there are some resellers who will also give you real support with your purchase from them like dragonbox.de.
They will sell at a big markup though.

Just get the one from the GAFer selling it. For his price, it's worth not getting the latest revision. Little difference that an extra $100 in your pocket won't hurt.

I wouldn't hold my breath, Intel dropped support for Atom processors. A successor would need an Intel Core M which would make the device far more expensive.

I think even without additional power, there are improvements to be made on a revision for the overall design. Say, aspects of the Win had to be adjusted to accommodate for active cooling, like removing a speaker. Keyboard and button layout can use an overhaul, too. Right now GPD has the Pocket they're working with so I suppose they might start a campaign for the Win 2 (or XD2?).

I'm happy with mine but it'll be interesting to see where they take it. I jumped on the first model because it's something I wanted since since seeing the OQO way back when.

Intel just stopped development of new Atoms. They still sell the Cherry Trail SKUs.

Wade posted the latest version of their keyboard design on dingoonity for public feedback yesterday.

Still a very long way away but from the tidbits we've been told is almost the size of the Win, still a clamshell and given its still in the early phases and for security he will not disclose what CPU they are looking at although a while back he mentioned the 7Y30 although that might have been too pricy.

Also in related news he revealed he threw out the old XD2 design they were working on and the current design in progress is a slider style instead of a clamshell.
GPD pocket IGG campaign ended at just over 3 million making it into the top 20 funded campaigns on IGG, they are planning to do a Kickstarter through a third party since Kickstarter doesn't allow people in China to run campaigns.

Guys why don't you post some screens on the portable console screenshost thread? I'm basically the only one with a gpd win posting there. :(

I don't like the power button in the middle, esc has to be the first key and what's the point of that L3 key if there's already a L3 shoulder button? The rest seems good.

i found these 2 interesting videos

Yes it should be the latest revision, search for coupons, you might save more.

Quick shipping question for anyone that can help. I ordered from geekbuying.com using express shipping and they used a company called TNT. It's supposed to be delivered today and the latest tracking on TNT.com just shows "USA OTHERS" now that it's out of customs and in the US. Has anyone experienced this shipper before and does this mean it may have been handed off to UPS, FedEx, USPS? I can't find the package on any of those shipper's websites so not sure and I want to make sure I'm home for it today. Thanks in advance!

Edit: disregard looks like it's continuing to update but just not telling who the carrier is. Oh well good enough and can't wait :-)

Hm, mine came through DHL from Geekbuying.

I'm a little frustrated that many games have limits on how low their resolutions can go. No-one's found a way around this, have they? It's especially bad if the lower limit is 1280*720. But many just dont let me go lower than 800*600.
I'd like to see how Hollow Knight is at quarter res (640*360) with nearest scaling, since as it is on the GPD it's a choice between blurry arbitrary res of 800*448 (or whatever) or laggy.

Check the subreddit for the GPD Win.
You can set costum resolutions.

I got a problem.
I'm trying to play Shovel Knight, but when ever I press the A-Button it performs the assigned action, but also opens the menu as if I had pressed Start.

Yeah, I have plenty of custom resolutions, just many games don't allow anything lower than a certain resolution, usually 800*600, but some newer games don't like anything lower than 720p. They justr don't recognize anything lower.

That keyboard brings back memories of an old windows phone I used to have. Was awful but the keyboard worked real well for me.

Can I use ps2 or nintendo emulator on it ?

I haven't used either but PS2 emulation is kind of crappy as far as I know and everything Nintendo pre-GameCube should work fine. Though some people on YouTube get certain Gamecube and Wii games to work ok or well through a different Dolphin build.

Oh i mainly wanted this for ps3 and wii emulation. Looks like ill wait for the next iteration

It'll probably be a really long while before then. If those are really the only things you were planning on using it for, then it's probably not for you. Many Gamecube games can run reasonably, but there are few Wii games that run well.
Looking at some videos on Youtube, PS2 emulation doesn't seem as bad as I was led to believe, but seems heavily dependent on what game you're playing.

PS2 no, PCSX2's... not great when it comes to optimization, which really holds it back on a low-spec (for a computer) device like this. That being said, if you're cool with (in-home only?) streaming, you can set up a custom launcher on Steam through another computer and stream it to your Win. I played through the last few hours of Yakuza like that - game running on my desktop, streaming through Steam to my GPD Win while I was relaxing in bed - and it worked great. Next to no noticeable input lag on my connection, dropped frames, or quality degradation.

Nintendo, everything up to Gamecube works great in one way or another. N64's dodgy as always and requires some effort to find the best setup, but it's like that on any Windows machine. I use a mix of PJ64 and Retroarch's Mupen core depending on the game. Gamecube and Wii are both mixed. You'll have to get a good version of Dolphin and do a lot of per-game configuration, including messing with the emulated CPU speed. For example, I got Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance working perfectly after lowering emulated CPU speed to about 40% or so. Zero issues so far. At 100%, it stuttered like crazy on cutscenes and regularly dropped frames.

essentially, if you're gonna do more advanced emulation on this thing, either stream from another computer or get to tinkerin'

hah, reminds me of old cell phone keyboards as well. In general the device feels like a hodgepodge of different devices in some ways. Reminds me of the old GP2X Wiz, the back of which seemed like it was originally designed to be the backplate of an old cell phone. Crazy how far we've come from devices like that. Wish I held onto a couple more of those older open source handhelds. Even the outdated ones are pretty fun to mess around with.

Yeah, the keyboard on this takes me back to a cell phone I had that had a slide-out keyboard.
I was also gifted a GP2x Wiz about a year ago but the first thing that happened was it bricked from its own firmware update. The GPD definitely has elements of all kinds of devices though, it's pretty damn cool.

Also, surprisingly, Trackmania Turbo runs great on this thing. I was very surprised by that, it gets at ~40 fps most of the time at 720p, normal settings.
However., this is on the first couple of campaign maps, so only two other cars were being shown (the medal ghost and your own ghost) and the maps are shorter and less complex than others.
I wanted to see if it could do Redout at lowest settings but it can't even start a race due to some weird incompatibility with iGPUs apparently.

After some emailing with GPD's rep I've received some clarification on the aluminum shell.
Contrary to my original assumption the top half of the clamshell (lcd portion) will be aluminum, not the bottom and from what I was told that will still be plastic.
The lid flexes easily causing the screen to come into contact with the keyboard waking it up so hopefully this will prevent that from happening meaning you would be able to carry it in tight pockets without it turning on.

Finally got some incense sticks to test flow through the heatsink.
Visually by eye I'd estimate roughly 2/3rds of the airflow goes straight down and out with a third of the flow going the long way out through the inside with a tiny amount oozing around the edges.
I'd need a old original heatsink to test to say for sure but given what I know now I'm not surprised the finned heatsink performed poorly.
The fins extended way to far going underneath the fan, the fins probably would have worked better if they were half the length.
I think I can make fins curved to match the airflow and I'll see improvements, not sure if I'll use my half copper pipe.

It's weird, recently despite undervolting the gpd is warmer and lasts less than i expect, i don't know when it started precisely but recently i have updated win10(maybe it changed some settings, services or apps?) and i bought a pendrive(that definitively has those effects but even when i don't use it i get those problems)

Maybe i have a virus?

Question, why the hell my windows 10 computers(=not only the gpd win) often don't detect my wifi modem(but detect others)?

The other android, ubuntu and windows 7 devices never had this problem.

Which version of Windows? I've heard the newest one - creator's update? - is a bit of a mess, especially on the Win. Could also be a rogue background app. As for the wifi modem, I'm not sure what the problem would be... what modem is it?

Yesterday i played batman arkham origins while windows defender was scanning for viruses and the gpd win was in charge, and despite all those things it wasn't as warm as in the last days, actually it was less warm than expected, i can't say anything about the battery since it was in charge but i would say the gpd win did as i expected, so now i have two hypotesys(defender said no viruses):

-yesterday for the first time i played only batman, instead of batman + titan quest, so maybe titan quest is way heavier than i think and the reason of the higher consumptions

-maybe the gpd win "got used" to the pendrive being constantly plugged(i used it as a second hdd) and its consumption and now that are some days without it the gpd win is returning to normality?

EDIT:
Questions:
-Anyone played van helsing 1 on the gpd win or at 720p? From the screens it seems to have small icons and fonts but screens are 1080p, also gamepad controls look uncomfortable(L3 to melee/ranged?)
The_Incredible_Adventures_of_Van_Helsing_-_Controller.png

-Would you recommend wargame european escalation? Steam reviews say it's too hard but it looks interesting

They are both cheap on bundle stars.

I don't know what update was, but IIRC it wasn't labeled as creator's update.
The modem is tp link but as i said everything else work flawlessly, only win 10 computers have problems.

Man I hope someone can help. With the small ass keyboard I must have typed in my password wrong when first booting up my GPD Win and setting everything up because after restarting what I thought I typed isn't working so I can't get passed the lock screen.

For the password reset, it's asking for a password recovery disk which I don't have. I even went on to my regular windows 10 laptop and don't see any option there to create this password recovery disk either so I'm stuck. Am I screwed or can anyone help? I'm desperate lol.

Edit: found the password reset disk option on my laptop but when I click it, nothing happens. Not sure what to do at this point.

Edit: disregard. Got it unlocked finally :-)

Ok the GPD Win heat and battery drain seem to be returned to normal, i think that the pendrive constantly plugged to be used as HDD really had bad effect that luckily seems to be passed, i'll only use the pendrive to transfer games, so i'll also be able to focus on less games(and to finish them!)

Now it never detects the wifi though :(
i controlled and it has the creator's update for privacy or something like that.

I'm suddenly wishing I didn't buy a GPD win 2 weeks ago. That aluminum one looks swank.

I remember on my chromebook keeping my USB drive plugged in would keep that thing piping hot and just murder my battery some reason, seems like similar issue here.

Just so everyone is aware, the design of the GPDwin 2 is most likely finished from GPD's point of view. People have been making lots of arguments about the keyboard design but it doesn't look like GPD is willing to budge. Also, based on the current design we can infer a few things.

This is pretty much the keyboard layout:

based on how Wade is responding, chances are slim it's going to change. This is the back of the device:

There is one particular interesting bit which is to the left of the USB-A port, but I couldn't even begin to speculate on it. Lastly, it looks like D-Input is being removed and it will only have Mouse and X-Input:

Now, Wade has said that the analog sticks would be moved to the outside of the device which a lot of people raised some arguments about, but looking at the back of the device, it's pretty much 100%. Reason being is that the heatsink on the GPDwin 2 would be blocking where the left analog stick would be on the GPDwin 1. Here's an example:

woQWQKy.png

Also, we do have some images that Wade has provided so I went ahead and made a crude mockup of how the GPDwin2 will look on the face:

tRalhBR.png

The GPDwin2 is also 5mm wider. We still don't yet know the size of the screen or what SoC it's using. I'm trying to convince GPD to use the 7Y30, but who knows. They may already have made up their mind and want to use Apollo Lake, which would be unfortunate.

Edit:

Just got the dimensions and I'm pretty sure the mystery door on the back of the GPDwin is M.2 slot

Not sure how I feel about the analog stick situation (especially the right one, yeesh that doesn't look comfortable), but everything else on it looks okay so far. Really hoping they use a better d-pad this time - the flatness of the one built into the Win is terrible. Combined with the heat situation and the glossiness of it, I found my thumb slipping all over it constantly. Popping in a matte 3DS one fixed it.

Internals are concerning as well - hopefully they take your input into account, Phawx.

Bring on the new model! I haven't used my Win much lately thanks to the Switch but it's also because it gets really hot. It's not very... Polished. If gen 2 were way more polished, I'd be thrilled. Even if it's the same!e specs as gen 1, I'd seriously consider upgrading.

I don't see the first 3 images :(
It looks thicker(and heavier?) though, i'm not sure about analogs.
