This is a very versatile Trent Reznor album that sounds a bit like NIN.

Cool stuff but not what I expected and not what I'd like. I like to be surprised but a lot of this album just doesn't fit NIN for me. At all. Srsly. I kinda can't believe wtf I'm listening to. I'm listening to this stuff going like whuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut in my head. I have no words.

I love hearing everyone say different tracks are their favorite. There's no consensus which I think is awesome. My favorite tracks after 2-3 listens are Satellite, All-Time Low, Copy A and Came Back Haunted.

i think everyone was ready to hate this album, not sure why.

it's truly amazing though, there's no doubt in my mind that trent has refined his sound to near perfection.

i hope mariqueen cheats on him sometime soon so angry trent will come back

Album is pretty great, really love the second half.

I'm so glad this didn't turn out to be another With Teeth.

Rob Sheridan linked to the SPIN review of Hesistation Marks:

http://www.spin.com/#reviews/nine-inch-nails-hesitation-marks-trent-reznor-columbia-acid/

Someone please tell me this is as nearly indecipherable to them as it is to me. I mean, what does this even mean?

As a record from the gear-grinding, bloodletting, mud-sweat-and-tears, industrial void-enterer Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Hesitation Marks is an almost scandalous about-face, powering down the Hate Machine and revving up the Man-Machine, boldly exploring "EBM" for a generation of headbangers still coming to terms with the throbbing gristle of "EDM." As part of a cultural moment, it's the third in a trilogy of bluntly minimal albums — following the Knife's Shaking the Habitual and Kanye West's Yeezus — that retrofit an icon's chosen genre into a blocky, clinical, Piet Mondrian painting. Noise is rendered as tight, impenetrable polygons of sound; beats are clicked together like Duplo bricks in primary colors; 808s are heartbreak; and everyone seems to be jacking to the same circa-1988 Chicago house records.

I get the sentiment - Trent's put out an album that is aggresively going after a different sound, following a recent trend in albums. But good god is there so much language used to say something so simple. It seems desperate to come across as knowledgeable instead of just relating their thoughts on the album, it's all about how the album FITS.

Satellite is so good. It's like Nine Inch Nails channeling Tegan and Sara channeling Nine Inch Nails.

My deluxe edition showed up in the mail today! Very excited to get a proper listen of the album in over the weekend. Super nice packaging too!

Damn it. My local record store only got in the standard edition today. The deluxe won't show up until Tuesday. Looks like I'm waiting.

I really listened to the lyrics in Hesitation Marks, and songs like Disappointed etc., it was like Trent was openly mocking people who didn't like this effort, it was pretty goddamn meta. And if he did that on purpose then I'll give him a nod there, lol.
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. The songs makes so much more sense when listening to the album.

He parted with NIN, tried new things, personally and professionally, couldn't resist coming back to NIN, but now he is different. The album might be seen as "haunted".

Oh my god, the demo for All Time Low sounds fucking godly. Low how dirty the synths sound. I want THAT version with vocals.

Yeah, some of the lyrics sound like that. I still wish he would have expanded his lexicon a little bit, because I literally predicted some of the lyrics on my first listen. I think the lyrics are the only weak part of this album, not because they're inherently bad but because he's said these things before - the lyrics in Year Zero were refreshing because it was Trent doing a concept album that wasn't just about himself. Musically he's on top of his game and the production on HM is incredible.

so after listening to all time low, i realized it kind of sounds like early RHCP. the guitar riff sounds like prime frusciante. and trent sings in a kind of syncopated way like kiedis does.

That "Conversation with..." is fascinating. To bad he can't go back in time and do this exact same thing for his past releases.

I love getting an inside view at some of the process, and getting to hear some of that work. It makes me wonder whatever happened to that rumored disk of leftover material from "The Fragile" sessions...

What I wouldn't give to have been able to sit in the studio with this guy over the years, and hear all the crazy shit that was made, but ended up on the cutting room floor.

From what I can recall, he gave a few of those unused tracks to Saul Williams for the Niggy Tardust album, with a little re-working.

My vinyl shipped out. Should be here Tuesday like intended. The album definitely grew on me more. Funny thing is NIN actually grew on me. when I first listened I really didn't like it much. For whatever reason I just kept trying then something clicked and fell in love.

Now when are we getting The Fragile reissue?

Damn, after reading this post I've listened to Niggy Tardust and you can really tell which tracks are based on Fragile leftovers. It doesn't even sound like a rap record most of the time (which is great since I don't like that genre).

Definitely. Banged and Blown Through is one of my favorite TF leftovers. Great album as a whole.

In order of listing, my standout tracks on the first full listen:

Copy of a
Came Back Haunted
Find My Way
Disappointed
Satellite
Various Methods of Escape
Running
In Two
While I'm Still Here

This is why I hate this current incarnation of NIN. Reznor constantly overthinks things and the overall product suffers as a result. He was always a master at layering and mood and now most of his music is drum machines coupled with shitty synths and terrible lyrics. The snyth work in the link you posted is incredible, but he can't leave a good thing alone and then perverts it.

Well, I share your feelings about this current incarnation of NIN but I don't think it's as much over thinking it as it is WHAT he thinks is a well written track. He over thought the shit out of The Fragile and it worked out perfectly.

I'm not big on The Fragile, actually. I think it's a very bloated album that varies wildly when it comes to overall quality from track to track. I think he lost his sense of taste when he lost his addiction.

He has specifically said that he took a different approach for organizing this album compared to his previous work. Normally, NIN choruses go up, almost all of Hesitation Marks' go down. This was kind of an attempt at minimalist NIN.

Happy release day! I'm currently on my way home from PAX, so ill have to update the OP a bit when I finally make it back.

Gotta get my hands on that audiophile version!

It depresses me no end to think of an alternate universe where Trent Reznor never met Atticus Ross.

It's astonishing to me how an artist and musician like Reznor cannot stand back from his own work and see the decline in quality since Ross has been heavily involved.

As much as I'm striving to like HM, and I'm still only on my fourth listen so there's still hope, I really don't see how this stands out any more than his last three albums. There is so little energy, so few interesting riffs and melodies, that I just wish someone would shake Reznor and tell him to flip the bird to Ross and either work alone again, or find someone completely different.

It has neutered his signature sound into oblivion.

I enjoyed most of the whole album. A few duds, but mostly really solid stuff that feels like a blend of The Fragile and The Slip.

Waiting for some iTunes gift cards I ordered for 30% off to come in before I buy this. Looking forward to it and the concerts I have tickets for.

Mine are Copy of A, Find My Way, Everything (yeah, i love it), Satellite, In Two, and While I'm Still Here/Black Noise (I consider them one song).

So yeah like half the album! Haha.

All Time Low sounds like a mellow version of Burn. I love it.

This might not be Trent's edgiest album but the hooks and vibes he took with him from HTDA and his solo work is being translated greatly here.

I think this is the first time I've been able to say I can kick back and chill to a Nine Inch Nails album.
