[Insider Gaming] Activision Leadership Isn’t Worried About Battlefield 6 Because Call of Duty is “Too Big To Fail”

Speaking with sources who wished to remain anonymous because they were not authorised to talk about Activision's internal conversations, it's been said that although Activision is keeping a close eye on Battlefield, they are not worried about the game outcompeting its flagship franchise.

It's said that Activision leadership believes that Call of Duty is "too big to fail" and will remain a profitable, annually released franchise for many years to come. At the time of writing, an annual Call of Duty title is penciled in for the next four years at least.

This year's Call of Duty title, dubbed 'Black Ops 7', is said to be a "strong" title according to those familiar with the game's plans, despite initial problems in development.

They do know that "too big to fail" means that failing would lead to absolutely fucking disastrous consequences, and not that it's literally impossible for it to fail...

...right?

Would love for those to be "famous last words" but they're probably right. We are currently in the worst timeline after all.

I kind of like the beef these 2 franchises have, they aren't afraid to let it be known they dont like each other. Zampella even switched sides.

If BF is a serious competitor again, it'll only make both games better.

Also, he's right.

They said something similar when EA was making SKATE and within a few years THPS was dead.

COD is bad, tacky, exploitative, and creatively bankrupt. There's plenty of room for a good FPS to come and steal its lunch.

That's not even what "too big to fail" means…

It doesn't mean something is so big it can't fail (which would also be nonsense… how's Halo doing these days?)

The term specifically means that IF the thing fails (more likely "when") it's too important (likely due to systemic economic and/or strategic importance) and will be bailed out in some form. No one is going to fucking bail you out with free money to account for billions of dollars of expected sales targets Activision if the next CoD is a turkey…

They could release the same damn game just with a new name and cod fanbase will buy it in the millions.

Even the worst selling cods end up being one the top selling game of the year.

Unfortunately, I agree with this. Idiots will continue to buy COD in droves despite the franchise being creatively bankrupt and I don't see it ending anytime soon.

No amount of hype for Battlefield will convince me its going to take over COD's spot in the near term. But Hollywood Video laughed Netflix out of the room once, and the new owner's track record with devs isn't so hot, so .......

I know it's not really comparable but reading this headline while having an Intel impending doom headline right next to it is quite funny.
One day these corpos will learn.

They're not wrong.

Even when they released Vanguard, Battlefield couldn't put a dent into it. Not only that but Battlefield failed hard as fuck.

Vanguard was, as always, the top selling game of that year too.

Of course they're not worried. You have special Einstein people that buy up every pixeled outfit, skin, etc. microtransactions they put in the store.

We used to call my youngest son, half retard because I caught him buying stuff for some basketball game with my card. He is grown now, but he bought some Ninja Turtles and some other cartoons on there and spent a 100 dollars and now every time he comes to the house, we just call him retard. He graduated.

There are millions of reatrded folks that buy microtransactions for that game, not going anywhere.

Like it or not they are correct, that doesn't mean there can't be years with other better games out there, they will still sell lots without a sweat

Cod may eventually fail one day but it won't be Battlefield that does it. Battlefield's best title (1 or 3?) sales wise doesn't even hold a candle to CoD's worst (Vanguard). This is coming from someone who played CoD since OG Modern Warfare, is currently done with CoD and will be checking out Battlefield 6. For better or worse CoD has become Fortnite. CoD also still has Black Ops 1 and 2 remasters up their sleeve if things start to go sour as well.
