[Insider Gaming] PlayStation 5 Price Hike Could be Next Due to Tariffs, Sony Warns

The news came from Sony CFO Lin Tao, who said that the company currently needs to find approximately 100 billion yen, equivalent to 512 million dollars to make up for the impact of the current tariffs.

"In terms of the tariffs, we are not just simply calculating the simple tariffs [prices] to come up with 100 billion yen, but are thinking about the current available information and looking at the market trend, we may pass the price [to customers] and also shipment allocation. So we are taking different measures in managing to come up to the 100 billion yen."

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki weighed in on the tariffs to say, "These hardwares can of course be produced locally, I think that would be an efficient strategy, but the PlayStation 5 is being manufactured in many areas [its components], so whether its going to be manufactured in the US or not, it needs to be considered going forward in such a critical situation."

So at the very least, it seems like Sony is currently weighing up its option on PlayStation 5 console prices and waiting to see how the current tariffs situation shakes out as it's still incredibly volatile.

That being said, PlayStation 5 price increases is something that the company is curiously considering and will likely be announced soon if the current situation with China and the United State isn't resolved soon.

Last month, Xbox had announced price increases across all of its hardware due to increase tariff prices and Nintendo has seemingly already got ahead of the curve by announcing the Nintendo Switch 2 will launch at $450.

Nintendo was also the first to introduce $80 games, with Xbox shortly following suit by saying that some of its first-party games would now cost $80 starting holiday 2025.

If right now a digital PS5 plus games is $30 cheaper than a Series S or $150 cheaper than a Series X, it is obvious that it will go up in price, we will see when and how much.

Yeah no shit. They're not going to sell the PS5 at a loss when they don't need to. US hasn't had any price increases yet but Sony already have increased prices for the rest of the world.

Question is by how much.

If they go $50 they will catch ms with their pants down. But guys like totoki want increased profit margins so even if they could get away with $50 bean counter might want to go higher.

Units sold isn't a metric on how successful a console is. PS5 has already given Sony 4x more money than the PS4 and it sold less.
yes but you also need the userbase for devs to consider making games on the platform.

Unlike Xbox, playstation has a sizable healthy userbase, but what about in the future?

PS5 is 1.4M below PS4 and many heavy hitters are still coming from their first party studios, GTAVI, etc.... The future looks great.

PS5 will end up selling around the same if not more than the PS4 in the end.

Vindication

At this point, there's nothing Sony can really do.

The best we can hope for is good deals across the board and a diversified supply chain that uses the most efficient routes and prices to export into the U.S.

Watch.. tariffs will go back down and these companies will hold their higher raised prices for a while hoping people still buy them so they can make as much money as possible.

Consumer electronics increasing in price after half a decade on the market is NORMAL.

Game consoles NEVER decreased in price during their lifespan.

Everything is FINE.

This Is Fine GIF

These companies are just going to be using the current trade situation as a way to justify the price hike and then they'll never lower the prices once it's all figured out.

If they're even within spitting distance of the pre price increase sales then the prices will never drop again.

Make no mistake, these price increases will be permanent, and these disgusting corpos were already wanting to increase them years ago, but now they have an excuse to do so.

There's no way Totoki believes assembling the PS5 in the US is an 'efficient strategy' lmao.

This picture disgusts me. Why would the magnificent Bald Eagle be carrying a disgusting subpar rifle of the not-free world designed by soulless commies? He should be carrying something meant for spreading freedom like a AR (I'd like to think a Baldie would carry something with soul like a M16A2 and he should be wearing some MOLLE as well because how else is he going to carry a standard load of 210 rounds of beautiful freedoms spreading 5.56?).

As many have said, it was predictable and it only makes sense, unfortunately.

I do wonder, though, if Sony will wait for the 90 days pause of the tariffs between the U.S and China to end to announce/implement the price increase.

I don't see why anyone would be shocked about this. Increases are happening everywhere and while it's unfortunate AF, it's absolutely makes sense.

If you plan on getting anything, you should get on it before the price hike happens. If it already did, well, then the choice is up to you, lol.

They just negotiated a 90 day thing with China dropping the tarrifs to 30% (down from 140%) so are they using this as an exuse to copy MS?
Why not take that time and make a plant somewhere else? Why does every manufacturing plant need to be in China? I get it, they have near slave labor, but most of its machines.
I get it takes time to make other manufacturing plants but damn, its like they don't even bother.

Nintendo read the room and made proper moves.

Not sure what's happening with Valve next from a hardware perspective, but the steamdeck is made in china and is very likely to see a price hike in the near future.
Price increase of the Steam Deck won't be annouced as long as they can, Valve isn't dumb.

Plus, it has competitors now, so don't expect the base model to cost the same as PS5 Pro.

China and US are in active talks with i believe a 90day reduction while negotiations are conducted.
Any price hike prior to 90 days and how this shakes out with China--- would simply be a money grab. Microsoft already did it and if tariffs end up near prior levels you sure as hell know Microsoft aint gonna discount the console back to previous. Not that it matters- they cant sell the thing.

I hope Sony will increase there production of Japan made products especially PS. And also move there business to other parts of Asia for example Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia and also build factories in USA so they have a better negotiation with USA for exemptions and tax cuts.

"The US tariffs are too much and we are sadly forced to increase the prices. We really dont want to do this gamers! But we have too"

*Increase prices globally*

These tariffs have been the perfect excuse for many companies to just rise the prices. They can do it, and people will blame others. I personally cant believe I bought my PS5 cheaper than what it costs today.
