This is exactly what I read here. If you're playing Madden 2006 on Xbox on Live, you'll be able to compete against people playing the same game (Madden 2006) on Xbox 2. Obviously, the Xbox 2 version of the same game.
This has nothing to do with BC, but simply with the fact that Xbox Live is accessible from both Xbox and Xbox 360 (and PC, I add).
"If you are already an Xbox Live subscriber through the original Xbox system, you can continue to play against gamers who are on Live through Xbox 2 -- as long as they are playing a current generation Xbox game."
As we are still in the "current generation," its quite clear that they are referring to the idea of playing Xbox 1 games (current generation) on Xbox 2.
