I maintain my position that the newstand folder should have a spot in the settings app to disable it. like the built-in nike+ app has. I know it’s a folder. Apple can work behind the scenes to make it invisible via user choice.

it really is useless on the iPhone. I can deal with placing it on a homepage screen at the end but it’s still mildly annoying.
That would be a good compromise.

So just to confirm. I'm on the latest beta (not the GM), so do I have to manually download and restore? It's not coming up as an update in iTunes.

Do I need a IPSW file to update my Beta 7 to iOS5 final release?

Yes, you won't get an automatic update notification via iTunes from the Beta to Final.

I am probably LTTP on this but Wifi Syncing only works if my iPod Touch is plugged in to a power outlet? WTF really? whats the point then, since it still has to be plugged into something.
Lame Apple :(

You should be able to initiate a wifi-sync via Settings > General > iTunes Wifi Sync at any time. It will however automatically wifi sync if plugged into a power outlet also when on the network.

They can't. This is the way the market evolved for magazines, that they would be apps rather than special documents. It's kind of a shame it happened that way, but Apple didn't think they have enough pull to make a magazine market and request that all the magazines already in the AppStore stop releasing there and release for a new product. Apple had to make a compromise. They extended a few APIs, put a few new flags into the app bundles XML files, and a few other tweaks, and put it in a special folder.

If you were apple, how would you have gone about it. I guess one change I would have done is to make newsstand not appear until the first magazine app is downloaded. Apple chose instead to make it always visible and add a little button to quickly take you to that section of the AppStore. Maybe not the best thing, but certainly not the worst.

There are a number of solutions. You could allow the user to hide it. You can make an exception of putting a folder within another folder in this one case. I mean they made an exception for a scrolling folder which didn't exist before and still doesn't elsewhere because some people thought it might confuse other people but here we are with it. They could make it a special app that holds other apps. Since this is from Apple, they can break the rules and make it work better. They've already broken the rules so I don't see why they can't find a better solution.

Apple dun goofed. I still can't transfer my MobileMe account to iCloud!? *SMH*

uh oh. i have to migrate my account as well. they better fix this ASAP.

Someone must have been smiling on me today, I plugged my iPad in to iTunes and it updated to ios5 with no problems. In fact I didn't even realise people where having issues until my fiancé kept getting the 3200 error. She's literally just managed to get the update to work after trying for nearly 6 hours, the laptop nearly disappeared out the window more than once. I hid downstairs and played Rage :/

This. It messes with my precisely styled home pages.

Is that weird ?

Question (apologies if it has been asked before) I jailbroke my iPad 2 with Cydia and want to upgrade to iOS5 (don't want to keep jailbreak). I figured I could do it the normal way and itunes would just overwrite the jailbreak but I get and error (3173) noting my iPad can not be restored.

Do I have to delete the jailbreak first? How do I upgrade?

For new page...

I got it working, it seems I have to put it in the Itunes library first, then sync to my phone.

Is this right? Befor this, I can drag music to my phone and it will copy, but now it won't let me.
I am guessing you had the 'manually manage my music' check box checked before so you did not need to sync each time for your music to be added (can do simple drag and drop). You would need to recheck that box again (should be on the main menu when you select your iPhone within iTunes).

If I was forced to play rage I would want to throw my computer out the window too..... or did you mean your fiancé wanted to throw her computer=]

I think I've finally got everything sorted out and it looks good. iCloud calendars are working great, I'm tracking some pals on Find my Friends, it all works great. The only thing I'm still not seeing is photo stream showing up on iPhoto on my Macs. But I'm sure that'll sort itself out. Looking good! The future is cloudy!

Error -3002

Yeah, Mashable posted a story about people reporting that error along with extremely slow backups, etc.

Fake Edit - Looks like mine is doing something at least besides failing. Go. Go. Go!

You should just be able to do a restore with iOS5 and it will remove the jailbreak and put iOS5 on. That's how I did my jailbroken phone.

Tried and it gave me that error.

Unplugged ipad and tried doing wipe from settings and it just sits at the apple logo/updater bar and the bar never fills...

It seems like the servers are moving a bit more quickly for me this past 30 minutes. My AppleTV update is speeding up considerably, and is nearly done.

Chicago area for those wondering.

Photo editing works on my 3GS, assuming you're talking about the cropping and photo-enhancement.

All this makes me even sadder that my 4 died.
Glad it does work. I read on a list of iOS5 features that it didn't, but that list was full of mistakes and apparently that was one of them.

I think the 3GS is still a great phone. My gf is probably getting one tomorrow.

Do you have the iOS5 locally download it and tried to do a shift click on Restore so you can point to that file in iTunes?

The ATV update is small its the verification before it installs thats the problem.

So I'm updating my iPhone but I'm really not sure if I want to give up RetinaPad/FolderEnhancer/SBSettings on my iPad 2. I use them daily and they're great. Guess I'll check it out on the phone(where it should be more useful) first and see if its worth it.

Fake edit: Is AirPlay mirroring working out of the box with this upgrade? That could be the tipping point for my iPad.

Do I have to finish the backup before it updates?

Cause this is taking forever.

Pro-Tip:
Go to the iPhone and click RESTORE instead of update. It will ask if you want to back up, say NO. It will ask if you want to restore and update, say YES.
It will attempt the update without doing the backup for a millionth time.

BECAUSE NEWSTAND IS A FOLDER. YOU CANT PUT A FOLDER INSIDE ANOTHER FOLDER.

Why the fuck is this concept so hard for people to understand? Is the reason that mysterious??

Newstand groups magazine apps. Every magazine is an app, and behaves differently. This isnt the iBookstore where books are files, and follow Apple's design guidelines.
hmm seems like we could use x-to-the-z xzibit up in this bitch

Finally was able to update my iphone4. For a moment there, I thought I had lost everything. I had to restore from backup - I don't remember having to do anything like this with the previous updates...

I just did that, but it still would not drag and drop.

sigh

Guess I'll have to check it out later today after work. If anybody has an answer, please, let me know.

No, was just trying via itunes. Maybe that's the issue.

I can try what you suggested if i get it figured out.

I posted this in the jailbreak topic, but this is much more viewed, so I hope nobody minds if I post it here too (plus I didn't see this topic when I originally posted it).

I have Cydia, Snes9x EX, and Terminal on my iPad 2. I jailbroke it because I loved the idea of playing SNES games on it. Though I rarely do so, and I'd rather have iOS 5.

How should I go about upgrading? Do I delete these first, or if I upgrade, will it delete them automatically? Any risks involved? Also, what is the best way of deleting them? I can't delete them like normal apps.

Also, I may want to jailbreak my iPad 2 again in the future to play SNES games again. In that case, does it make any difference in keeping my current jailbreak apps, or not?

Even if it's not possible to jailbreak on iOS 5, I don't care too much, but if it is, I don't want to risk locking myself out of doing it somehow.

Sorry if I seem ignorant/naive, but I totally am when it comes to this stuff.

Do a backup first through iTunes and then do a restore to iOS5. It'll wipe out your system and install iOS5. Then after it's done, do a restore from backup to bring everything back except the jailbroken apps.

Can't you just to settings and clear/reset the device? As if you're going to sell it? Then just do a fresh install from backup with ios5. As for saving jailbreak info, I'm clueless, but I believe there are methods.

Heh speaking of, what exactly does a restore from backup that takes so long? After it retores from a backup, it still has to copy over your apps and your media, so it can't be that. What takes so long? Settings, messages, etc should be small and quick.

And there's logic to why Apple made it a folder and not an app.
1- they may want it to be as quickly accessible as possible. Magazines are more 'in and out' than books.
2- they may want the newest magazine always to be 'visible' as tiny thumbnails in the app, which would remind people about them and promote use.

In these cases, having it open as a folder makes sense, and therefore makes it impossible to nest in another folder.

All the things you listed would have different types of issues, in terms of accessibility and logic. There's honestly nothing wrong with this solution, except for some ultra-OCD people (of which there are alot on this forum) who for some irrational reason can't stand the site of 1 app which they can throw at the end of everything, and which will never bother them. I don't think the percentage of people who have this level of OCD is enough reason for Apple to find a 'solution' for this 'problem'. If I were in Apple's showed, it's not something that would really occur to me. Just my opinion.

I am curious how combining airplay mirroring with Splashtop will look. Seems like a good alternative to a htpc if it is decent.

Argh I have this problem every so often

I cannot upgade to IOS5.0 it keeps on giving an unknown error after the software extraction and doing the restore

I have rebooted a buncha times, disconnected USB devices, made sure windows 7 and itunes were up to date

I keep forgetting how I solve this problem besides it just happens to go through by itself after a billion tries

Thanks. Quick question though; when I do a restore from backup, does it automatically neglect the jailbroken apps, or do I have to manually deselect them?
