I did an update to iOS 5 with the iPhone 4 of my father. Backed everything up, just like I did with my 3GS. iTunes said that it restores everything from that backup and now my father's iPhone is empty except for one 3rd party app (the preinstalled Apple-Apps are there of course) and he lost all of his music. Contacts, messages and notes are there, though.

What to do now?

How long did you let it sit after the "restore" happened? The funny thing is after a restore happens, it's not done and still copying content over.

Yeah, those restores took forever. I just left my phone connected for like an hour until it had truly died down to no activity.

In iTunes right click on your dad's iPhone and select restore from back up. Choose the back up and just wait.

EDIT: If you see sync arrows spinning next to the 3G sign that means to let it keep syncing

I also like the idea of everything being in one place. There's something to be said for not having to shout at multiple people if things go wrong.

guys, my music is gonna be deleted from my phone once i update, right? i do have everything backed up, i'm not worried about losing anything. but i manage my music manually and i'd like to have the same stuff on there again after i update.

i can create a playlist with all the songs on my phone. but itunes won't let me copy it to the computer. what do i do?
^ anyone?

I'm pretty sure that the restore/back-up will tell iTunes to put the same music back on there as you had prior. Making a playlist of all the music you have on your iPhone and then syncing the iPhone will put that playlist on your computer. It seems like a safe back-up solution but I think you should be fine without it.

I went ahead and setup an @me.com address. Now what? It's just like any other email address right? I'd have go and change all of my Apple ID stuff to take full advantage of it?

Sup guys.

If you tap newsstand it'll crash springboard though. Only recommend it if you don't plan on using it at all.

-Take two apps and go to create a folder
- The second the apps are in the folder and it’s doing the folder creation animation, drag Newsstand into the folder
- As long as you’re quick enough Newsstand will go into the folder!

I just bought some music on iTunes, its not appearing on the iPhone. I set iTunes to automatic download. Anything I am missing? (Don't say 3GS can't do it!)

4th error during my restore, i'm going crazy.

' The restore failed because of an error.' Nice explanation.

Sounds like the "servers are slammed, sorry bro" issues from last night. Which makes sense since new 4S activations are spamming activation servers. All you can do is try and try again.

Did you enable automatic downloads in the iPhone settings as well?

I also had an amazing time with the iCloud last night. Specifically... the purchased tab.

If anyone is like me and you've been using an iPhone since Day 1... you've probably lost a few purchased songs and apps along the way. Between all the updates, syncs, iPhone generation switches, etc... I forgot about all the downloads I've made over the years... both free and paid for.

Well that changed last night.

Kind of a blast from the past looking over all the apps I purchased/DLed over the years. And what's great... I found quite a few that I had lost that I really wanted back. Did it all right back on to my phone... so happy.

I'm not a big fan of the universal login... but I must say... I can see the benefits with the iCloud. Really really really loved downloading my old apps and song wirelessly last night on an as needed basis. Those loyal Apple users with .Mac addresses and Apple IDs will know exactly what I'm talking about.

I did that and it just restored the things I was talking about. All apps and music are gone. I did it the same way like I did with my 3GS and there it kept every song and app.

Nice one, thanks. I knew it would be hidden well somewhere :)

So, will it just kick off in a few minutes?
Well since the purchase was made in the past before you had that setting ticked, it probably won't. Have to download a new app or song in iTunes to see it download on your phone over the air.

I've been pleasantly surprised at how smooth my 3GS is running with iOS5. I expected lag, but it seems like things are a little quicker now.

Oh, and don't do anything to your phone while restoring until those sync arrows go away in iTunes. I was on "restoring iPhone apps" for at least a half hour last night while updating my phone.

Anyone else having problems accessing iCloud mail in the Mail app on their Mac? Seems to work everywhere else except that.

Yes. Sparrow, Mail.app on my other mac and Mail on my iPhone keeps saying that it can't retrieve mail and asks for my password again. :|

Mine just spins and spins and then I get the exclamation point.

Here's what worked for me:

Go to appleid.apple.com and change your primary e-mail address. Log into iCloud.com. Then go back to appleid.apple.com and change your primary e-mail address back.

Found that method online, and it worked.

Album downloaded wirelessly but only after I dragged it into my iPhone in iTunes. Tried an app and it's not worked. I wonder if it's not supported with 3GS.

EDIT - Working fine now :)

Quick question:

Planning to install iOS5 on my wife's iPad 2 but it only has about 48% charge...freakin laptop can't charge it via USB (and I don't have the iPad USB wall plug on me), it is possible to still do the install? I was hoping to do it now while I have time and can have it all set up before my wife comes home and uses it, but it not...=/

I just chatted with MobileMe chat support about my Apple ID issue where it wouldn't let me verify my me.com email address in my me.com Apple ID for use in iMessage and Facetime, they escalated it and a Senior Advisor is going to contact me about it... goddam this Apple ID shit is fucked.

You should be fine.

Can someone explain to me (or post a link) how exactly iMessage works?

1. As an experiment, I took my phone, with iOS5 installed, and turned off 3G and cellular data. Wi-fi only. A friend took his phone, with iOS5 installed, and turned off his wi-fi (3G and cellular data only).

I selected his phone number (I don't know his Mobile Me/@me/iCloud info) and in a matter of seconds, it switched from "Text Message" to "iMessage" and green to blue. Same behavior for him.

How in the world does it figure out, without me even needing to send a message, to use iMessage instead of a txt/SMS?

2. Under the same conditions I sent my friend with an Android phone a message. It was green, and the message said it went through (there was no red exclamation point like I might normally see when cellular data is turned off), but he didn't actually receive a text until 10 minutes later when I turned my cell data back on.

Does iOS5 just hold onto those messages until you have enough service to send them out? Shouldn't it give some sort of indication (like the red mark) that it hasn't actually been sent yet?

lol. I don't even know what's in my iCloud and Apple is already sending me messages about upgrading because it's almost full. smh.
You use Comic Zeal or one of the other comic apps? It's most likely that, or you never take anything out of your camera roll.

Comic Zeal is currently using 2GB of my storage.

Try restarting your computer and then trying it again. Sometime iTunes does a half ass restore. When you initially backed-up the iPhone did you right click on the iPhone icon and and click back-up or did you "sync" it?

Thanks...I've installed iTunes 10.5, synced and updated all apps, backed it up...then noticed the iPad wasn't charging on the laptop and I'm like WTF?!

I just found out not a lot of USB ports out there don't output enough juice to charge an iPad, with the obvious exception of Apple hardware =P

At least the iPad only has like 3GB of the 32GB used so hopefully the update process is not as painful as when I did it for my iPhone 4 on my desktop last night (which has like 29GB of the 32GB used).

I went through the "Before updating to iOS5 you have to backup"-thing.

Sorry if this has been asked/talked about already but this thread is rather daunting to check through.

Is anyone else having major battery life issues with iOS 5? I have a Verizon iPhone 4 and holy shit this thing drains like 4x faster than it did before I updated.

Yep. Go to www.icloud.com , login with your Apple ID, click on your name in the upper right hand corner, hit Reset Photostream to reset whatever photos you uploaded to it because deleting it locally from your device is not enough.

Not sure about #2, but regarding #1: I think it sends a request from your phone to his to find out if he has iOS 5 via wifi when you're in the conversation view. At least I'm not sure how it could work otherwise.

If I turn off wifi and 3G it doesn't show me that it will send an iMessage. So I think I'm right.

I am literally having the hardest time switching my Apple ID from a hotmail account to my new @me.com address. Any advice?

I scared that once my primary account goes to @me.com, I won't be able to access it.

Fiancee just updated her phone today to ios5 and she cant add or edit any contacts, the plus button is gone from the contact list. Any suggestions?

edit: Fixed, she didnt have her contacts synced to iCloud.

My brother had this. Go to settings-iCloud- and turn on sync contacts with iCloud. Reboot phone (maybe) and it'll work (you can then turn off iCloud contacts sync and you'll be fine)
