I can't get Twitter updates to work in the notification bar...

Anyone know how to fix this?

You don't - thankfully. It would be a pain in the ass getting a banner every 2 seconds.

Twitter only sends notifications for direct messages and possibly mentions I believe.

I don't understand. Why do I get the "send message" swoosh when sending an iMessage? It makes using it obnoxious and annoying for people around you. I didn't mind it when it was for normal SMS, because I don't send that many, but iMessages? Ungh.

I've asked on feedback at Apple, if anyone else is annoyed by not being able to turn this off without jailbreaking, feel free to help!

Hope I'm not the only crazy one who is bugged by this!

Go to settings, then general, then sound, and turn the switch that says something like 'send mail' from swoosh to none.

The only things I'm missing now, and the reason I will no doubt JB again once the untethered is out:

Tweeting from anywhere, seems silly to integrate it into iOS but not let us tweet from anywhere using say a notification center widget like the existing weather one, same for Messaging, the app is nice, but it would be so much quicker sending a quick one off from the notification center instead of changing an app.

But the idea of integrating Twitter into iOS is to allow you to share app content to Twitter in a consistent way, just as you can upload a video to youtube from camera roll or SMS a picture to someone from Photos. If you were allowed to tweet anywhere in the system, what would the interface be for if you wanted to reply to a tweet, or DM someone? That's because the app handles those other functions.

A menu bar icon for notifications, seems kinda silly to not have anything besides badges across icons that could be anywhere across the homescreens and in folders.

That menu bar is pretty crowded already depending on your settings. You have signal strength, carrier, 3G (or "No Service"), Wifi, sync progress, the time, location service, alarm on, bluetooth on, bluetooth device battery indicator, battery %, battery icon. If you didn't see it on the lock screen and don't want to check the badges on app icons, do you really need an icon when it's easy enough to swipe down and see what notifications have come in? :)

Contacts/Messenger pictures, an annoying thing I find is that there are still no contact pictures in either, more so messenger, and numerous times I have text the wrong person just because the names are close or I forgot who I text last and don't look at the name when opening up the app. Would also be great if there was a way to see what number from a contact I was texting for those with multiple mobile numbers and such like.

I'll agree with that. They should show a small photo at the top. Though if you don't look at the name, are you going to see the small thumbnail either?

Ok, I'm a little confused. Let me have this cleared up. to long into the cloud you need a @me address? If yes does that mean I have to create another iTunes account?

That's already disabled, I'm talking about text messages/iMessages, not mail. There's no such setting for SMS/iMessages.

Is anyone else having issues with your phone not auto syncing when you plug it in to a power source?

Everything else works fine, and I can wifi synch fine as well when I manually tell it too, but it's not syncing on its own when I plug my phone into a charger.

Any ideas?

It's easy enough to ignore the tray though, especially since it's so hidden and after you've undid the lock screen or even left your phone for a couple minutes and didn't see notification pop up. Having been Jailbroken, the notification apps seem to be able to take icons for various apps and put them up in the menu bar to let you know what needs to be attended to. They even have a priority of which icon to show in case there are numerous ones. The system works pretty well and takes advantage of the space to let you know. Here's an example plus it shows the timeline I keep mentioning:

or here which shows more icons:

No. If you want to use iCloud for email, you need to create a .me address. You would still log in with whatever your iCloud login is.

I reset my password twice and it tells me I need an email address. So, I used my email with no luck. So, idk.

iCloud login = iTunes login. Right?

Argh! - Just found a serious peeve with iOS5. :/

Previously I could hook up my ipad to my tv via the HDMI cable, stream video via AirVideo and importantly, switch off the screen via the power button and the video would continue to stream. This used very little battery.

Now with my ipad updated, you can't switch the screen off via the power button anymore as doing so stops the video from playing / streaming, so streaming to my TV is taking a hell of a lot more battery than before.

Have I missed something somewhere that would let me get this functionality back?

(The screen won't auto-lock with AirVideo open & streaming either, so that's not an option.)

No but don't you still have to pay to get one of those or is that free now?

Edit: it seems like you can't anymore. Anyways, what was your point? I thought I didn't need a @me account to get on the cloud?

I went ahead and setup an @me.com address. Now what? It's just like any other email address right? I'd have go and change all of my Apple ID stuff to take full advantage of it?
Doesn't look like you can change your Apple ID to use a MobileMe account after the fact (I was hoping to do this as well). I don't have too many purchases on my existing account (Tapatalk and a few games) so I've not decided whether or not I should just write them off or download them from my current account.

EDIT: This is what I get:

So why would you want to use a MobileMe account instead of whatever you had before? I don't quite understand what the big deal it.

Personally I've never been 100% happy with the way Gmail works on the iPhone (archive/delete thing bugs the shit out of me), so it was something I wanted to try out. I know Gmail is incredibly feature rich (and I love it for that) but just a few moments of using the iCloud mail app reminded me of how simple email used to be (and I love it for that).

Sad I know. :p

Still can't connect to iCloud mail via Mail.app on OSX, Apple tech support says it's a problem on their end but it's working fine on my other devices and in the web interface.

Can you use tags and nested tags like in gmail?

I have a question I'm almost embarrassed to ask: I purchased an iPad 2 in July, and for some reason I never plugged it into iTunes. Sicne then, I've been buying apps and songs through the App Store on the iPad. Now I want to upgrade my iPad to iOS 5. Am I at risk of losing anything on my iPad when I plug it into iTunes? I don't want to have to rebuy certain apps.

Thanks for the help. :)

Hey,

what is the messages app and what does it do? How do you use the integrated twitter or is that only on 4s?

I tried to send one to myself under contacts and the send button won't activate?

I didn't like that way Gmail worked on iPhone until I discovered this...

I updated my iPhone 4 last week with the GM of iOS5.

So today I decide to update my wife's iPhone 4 to iOS 5, and iTunes says it needs to download an update for this phone. It's downloading the update now. I just don't understand why it didn't use the GM file I used, as it did previously, when I updated to iOS4 early doing the exact same thing.

I've been using it that way since I got my iPhone. Still doesn't give me the ability to actually DELETE email.

In Gmail on a browser, go to Settings->Forwarding and POP/IMAP and change the setting "When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:"

Anybody got any recommendations for any free Newsstand content?
Despite having an iPad I've never delved into the whole reading magazines/newspapers thing and wanna try some out before purchasing anything.....

Well you have to plug the iPad to iTunes to get iOS 5 anyway. So once you do that every single purchase that you made will be backed up on your computer. Once iOS 5 is installed the apps your previously bought will be installed on your iPad.

It is a known feature that when in the Camera.app, if you click press the Volume + button, it will take a picture. HOWEVER!

If you have headphones plugged in, you can use the buttons on the headphones as an extended trigger!

Trying to think of good uses for it, only have a few so far.

To use your Apple ID with iCloud it must be formatted as an email address. If you have an older Apple ID that's not an email address and just a username you need to update it before it'll work with iCloud. You can edit/update your ID via iTunes itself by "viewing" your account and clicking edit.

It checks the only spot iTunes keeps ipsw files.

first you will never have to rebuy an app you paid for before. same deal with music too. (music used to be lost if deleted but now can be redownloaded as of this summer - part of the iCloud thing)

connect it to a computer and cancel any attempts iTunes makes to start a sync as that would wipe your ipad.

grab the update to iOS 5 from iTunes, apply it and then once it’s done you can disconnect it from the computer and keep doing what you’re doing.

Hey mate I had the same problem.

Plug your iPhone into your computer so it connects with iTunes. In iTunes click the iPhone under devices. Make sure your looking at the Summary tab. Go down till you see "Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi". May sure that is checked. Then sync one last time so the settings are enabled. Now try to sync through Wi-Fi on the iPhone itself. It should work.

Great. I just didn't want iTunes to overwrite whatever was on my iPad. I was always under the impression that iTunes dictates what is on your iPad, so if you have an app on iPad but not on iTunes, iTunes will take it off the iPad.

And seeing as how my iPad has a ton of apps that aren't on my iTunes, I was afraid of what might happen when I update my iPad.

Sorry, yeah you are right, seems like an oversight, it's the only one that doesn't seem to have the option.

I see what your saying but your fine. Whatever iTunes sees it doesn't have, it will sync and copy it to itself so it has it's own copy.

So go update that iOS!

Does the Wi Fi sync thing update play counts? I have tried a few times and the message in iTunes is "transferring purchases" while the phone is stuck on step 2 of 4. After that both processes end and I can't tell if something has been updated.

Hey guys, got a question.

official_iphone_3g_unlock.png

I got this message when updating to iOS 5. My phone is a refurbished replacement because the previous one I had was having issues. Does the message mean it's an unlocked phone?

Thanks for the tip, but I already did that, and syncing through Wifi DOES work on my phone. My issue is that my phone doesn't sync automatically when I plug it into my charger. I was under the impression that it's supposed to auto-sync when you plugged it into a power source.
