Bump, to see if anyone else knows an answer

Its called Wifi Sync not Cellular Sync.

The condition for it to automatically Sync your devices with iTunes is when you iOS device is connected to Wifi, its plugged in and your computer is on.

If you like iTunes not to sync over wifi just turn it off by unchecking in iTunes under your device status. 'Sync over Wifi'.

Wait, can I no longer back up locally if I have iCloud backup turned on? What happens exactly when I hit sync in iTunes while iCloud is turned on?

It will sync, it just wont keep a backup on your computer.

Really? From what the iOS message said it sounded like you could manually sync on plug-in to your PC and that would work as normal. Just that it wouldn't ask you - you'd have to manually hit sync.

Well wait, that's fucked up isn't it? What if I want a local copy and and a cloud storage? What about stuff that I don't back up to iCloud? How do I back that up?

No no, I like it. I was just worried that something might happen if I were to leave the wifi zone (or turn on 3G) while it was syncing but apparently I should be fine from StopMakingSense's post

Not sure, I just have everything back up to the cloud.

My camera roll exceeds 5GB, so I turn that off because I'm not ready to pay for more storage. I assumed I could do a normal local backup to get that data too.

You can right click on your device in iTunes. And do a manual backup whenever you want. Currently for automatic backups you can only choose between iCloud and local. I prefer local anyways.

Apparently pictures only stay in photo stream for 30 days...where do they go after that?
They... disappear?

Pictures in the camera roll or elsewhere backed up will always be there.

AbsoluteZero said:
That doesn't make any sense. I thought the idea of the iCloud is that it backed up your stuff.
Photo Stream is not the same as a backup of the Camera Roll. Think of Photo Stream as an easy way to spread pictures across different devices.

You can backup your Camera Roll in iCloud, and this would be permanent (and count towards the 5G limit).

I've read around about that. But this is a 100% legit iPad, bought new from Apple a month ago, no shenanigans whatsoever. And that makes it even harder to find a fix for! I might just call them tomorrow....so frustrating!

did you modify your host file to block the itunes activating server that verifies firmwares?

Here's a problem I can't seem to solve. Ever since iOS5 and the new iTunes, I can't get my music organized like I used to. A lot of albums that have different artists are now separated in Album view. They used to show up under one album but now I can't get that to happen on some albums. I even check to see if there is an Album Artist that unifies them and that doesn't work either. Any ideas? Sorta annoyed that I can't get my music organized on my phone anymore.

Think I'm sticking to cabled syncing, Wi-Fi syncing isn't reliable enough.
I charge my phone through the USB cable on my PC, so I'll be sticking to wired as well. It's also (obviously) significantly faster.

Reminders is part of ical. You can set reminders and see your reminders there.
I'm syncing it but I just don't see reminders in the panel on iCal.. and even if this did work, would it mean I can add a reminder on my computer and have it show up in the reminders app on my phone?

Yes I think you can do that. Are you sure you have the Reminders pane open? They should be showing up there.

I don't know what would have changed in iOS5, but make sure they are checked "part of a compilation". I've had this issue off and on with some albums going back years from today.

Any idea if Apple has any plans to update iCloud with more web based features in the future? I just want the option to be able to look at my pics, and listen to my music through the browser.

I've got my texts set to never repeat, and yet they always repeat once.

Anyone else getting this bug?

Reminders has also gotten very buggy for me, where certain reminders began duplicating, and I just finally deleted them all in hopes of fixing it.

I see the reminders pane open, but nothing in there. May it have to do with iCloud/being connected online, or maybe I need to upgrade to Lion 10.7.2?

If you create a reminder in iCal, how does it know which list of reminders to go to?

iWork cloud is crap, I can't even edit my document on icloud.com

In general the biggest flaw with iCloud is the fact that working with your files in the cloud through your browser verses on your device is virtually non existent no matter what type of file we are talking.

Still discovering nice little changes. The default weather app now uses GPS to make the local weather the default, and selecting any day brings up an hourly forecast.
Any day? For me it only works for the current day and gives maybe 12 hours of hourly data.

Is there something I am doing wrong?

And battery life definitely seems a little worse under iOS5. Phone still lasts me throughout an entire day of heavy use and has some left to spare, but it isn't the same battery beast it was 2 weeks ago.

Hm yeah they should be working.. not sure.

The Reminders pane deals with Reminder lists just like Calendar deals with calendars, ie. you can change which list a reminder goes into, as well as which lists are visible.

Hmm, alright thanks that sounds great, I just need to figure out what's going on. I'll try to DL the Lion update and see how it goes then. I wonder if Anxiety integrates well with it..

Tell me about iCloud, Apple-GAF.

I bought an iPad 2 last night and updated it to iOS 5 and enabled iCloud (I think I did anyway).

So...what now?

I'm trying the Wi-Fi Sync but it's not updating any of my podcasts. >:(

I don't even see the point to be honest. I have to plug in the fucking shit to a power source in order to use it. I might as well plug it to the computer anyway.
You don't have to use every checkbox they put in the operating system. Sync to iCloud is good for people who don't even own a computer (I know a few people who have iPads and no computer) or people who travel a lot and often have access to wifi away from their computer. If you're plugging it in at your house every day I don't know why you'd use it.

so um, icloud isnt' free right? You guys have decided to cough up for usage?
5GB of storage is free, not counting your Photo Stream, apps and any music you've purchased from iTunes.

I really wish for location based reminders they integrated the Map app, because as it is now you can only set a reminder at your current location or choose an address from your address book. So if I wanted to set a location based reminder to pick up milk/eggs/bread when I'm at the store I'd have to first add it to my contacts.

Just a small peeve. It's an extra step I'd rather not do.

One last question, do we need to enable home sharing for this to work? Sounds very unlike Apple (not that I do not believe you Ha ha!).

I haven't enabled Home sharing.

Yeah, I was skeptical at first about this as well, but several people on these boards suggested it, so I tried it out and it works.

iPhoto question related to photostream:

I can access my photostream in iPhoto and I love it. I see it as an item on the panel in iPhoto and I also see an event called Oct 2011 photo stream. I would love to think that the event will stay there permanently. Why else would they name it month year photostream?

I have made a new event called Oct 2011 by itself, but I cannot copy the pictures from the photostream event and paste them into the new event. Any ideas how this part of the whole thing works? I do want to keep the photos in iPhoto permanently (as in, I want to decide what stays and what goes unlike the photostream which is only good for 30 days).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Damn, I need to know the answer to this as well.

Hi, everyone.

I just switched over from an Android phone to the 4S, and I'm absolutely loving it. I do have one problem, though. I use Gmail as my primary mailing address, and often have conversations over it with friends and my wife. Is there any way to make my iPhone fetch the data faster than once every 15 minutes? I'm using the native mail app, right now, but I'd be open to trying other apps as long as they are reliable and secure.

If you set up your phone as a Microsoft Exchange, instead of gmail, you can have Push, instead of Fetch

By the way, if you have it set like that, the delete button actually archives. In order to send a message to the trash, you have to move it to the trash folder. (My only annoyance)

^Gmail doesn't allow for push services on iPhone for some reason, and there's no way I know of tbh there than perhaps forwarding it to another email which does allow push, but i'm not sure how fast that'll be.

What do you want to backup that's not backing up to iCloud? You can still do local backups manually by right clicking the device in iTunes.

Sure it does.

Gmail push seems to work great too. If I have my browser up at work I've noticed that the email notification (you can enable this in Settings -> Notifications) comes at almost the same instant as it appears in the browser client.

Awesome! Thanks so much. I just deleted my old settings for Gmail and did them again using Exchange. It let me choose Push for data retrieval. Kind of annoying that they make you jump through hoops to do this, though.

Apple really has abandoned the podcast people. No iCloud or PC Free solution for it, no automatic updates, A downgrade ipad music app with no direct link to each podcasts itunes page and the category hidden deep within the "More" tab and no way to recustomize that.
You can recustomise it. Go to more and hit Edit (although I'm going off the assumption that the iPhone Music app has equal functionality).

I agree with you on the fact that iTunes is still required for podcast subscriptions, though, and WiFi Sync doesn't even seem to handle it the same, leaving some shows on my phone even when they've been listened and I have it set to remove them. If I could just hit a button in my music app and it could delete listened, and download new I'd be able to get rid of iTunes PC altogether.

So, I tried using transfering my old mobileme account to my iCloud account, I didn't realize it would just make a second account... Is there any way to cancel an iCloud account so that I can free up my email adress and claim it on my real account?

I'm updating my brother-in-law's iPad 2. Why is this taking so much? I don't remember taking so much time when I had my old iPhone. Are Apple's servers getting hammered or something?

I guess I'll download the ipws file from somewhere else...

Wait, so this is happening on both your iPad and phone? Those would be different backups too. It would seem you could isolate the problem to your iTunes or computer.

Except I used two different computers.

Just restored it (nothing i could do about it). Lets hope the delta updates are less painful.
